Gerald Graff Hidden Intellectualism Summary
Goodman 6

English Comp II

21 February 2018
Audience in Mind What makes a good writer? Many people have differing opinions on what
makes a person a good writer, or the standard in which one can write. One of the main things to
remember about writing is to always keep your audience in mind, and adjust you writing style and
language accordingly. Also remember that writing is process which takes time to perfect. English
has never been one of my favorite subjects, mainly just because I never really consider myself to be
a good writer and by the normal standard I may not be. In a sense though, I found contrary to my
belief that my writing wasn t all that bad. Now it took time for me to see that for myself, because ...

There some people that are incredibly street smart but do not fair so well in school but in Gerald
Graff s Hidden Intellectualism Graff argues that street smarts are just as important as book smarts.
Graff says that It is a matter of finding points of convergence and translation, moments when
student discourse can be translated into academic discourse and vice versa, producing a kind of
bilingualism on both sides of the student teacher divide (Graff, Hidden Intellectualism). In other
words, for a student with street smarts to learn to read academically, students need to read things
that interest them, encouraging them to dive into their reading, forming an opinion and arguing
their point. When you think about it this does makes sense, you can t get that student to read
more intellectual readings without first starting with something that interest them and then let
them naturally move toward more intellectual reading. I myself was this way in high school, I
was always uninterested in the required readings. Many times, failed to even read them and
when I did it was just to get a grade. I never really formed my own opinion of the reading, except
for the fact that I just didn t like it. However, when we could pick our own reading material,
something that interested me, I was more drawn in and able to form my own opinion, caring about
what I was reading. By doing so this allows students with street smarts, to not only become drawn
toward the more intellectual reading, it will get to a point where they want to argue their points and
form their own opinions. The question though is being street smart better than book smart, and in
my opinion, this can be situational, depending on what you are doing would determine which one
is better but when coupled they work well together. In writing which would you rather have,
someone who can express their opinion, and

Different Methods, Bacteria, And Development Transduction,...
Through three different methods, bacteria can obtain new genetic material: conjugation,
transduction and transformation Transduction is when a bacteriophage inserts it s DNA into the
host bacteria cell, while conjugation is when the bacteria shares DNA through direct contact, eg.
horizontal gene transfer. The third method, transformation, is the intake of external DNA into the
cell (Chen and Dubnau, 2004). In order for bacteriato be able to take in extraneous DNA, they must
first be in a state of competent (Hanahan, 1983). There are two types of transformation cells in
transformation: natural competence and artificial competence. Natural transformation can occur
in both gram negative and gram positive bacteria, but have different pathways to take in the new
DNA. There are several ways to induce competence onto some bacteria cells, that are not
naturally competence. Cells can be treated to heat shock, starved of nutrients, the use of
electroporation or keep in ionic solutions to induce competence by increasing the permeability of
the membrane (Van der Rest et al., 1999). Plasmids are circular double stranded DNA found in
bacteria that can encode for basic necessary functions (Couturier, et al., 1988). Ampicillin (6[D( )
a aminophenylacetamido] penicillanic acid) is an antibiotic that is a derivative of penicillin and is
can work against both gram negative and gram positive bacteria (Acred et al. 1962)

Mr. Simpson s Case On Fraudulent Misrepresentation, And...
Mr. and Mrs. Noll will not likely have a cause of action for fraudulent inducement against The Sands
based on their lack of due diligence to protect their interests upon entering an agreement with The
Sands. The Sixth District Court of Appeals has never before heard a case on fraudulent inducement
and therefore this memorandum has used both binding as well as persuasive court decisions to
come to a cohesive prediction of the Noll s situation. According to the state of Florida, fraudulent
inducement has four elements: (1) a false statement of material fact; (2) the maker of the statement
knew or should have known of the falsity of the statement; (3) the maker intended that the false
statement induce another s reliance; and (4) the other party justifiably relied on the false statement
to its detriment. Prieto at 917. The plaintiff must prove that all four elements of fraudulent
inducement are met in order to recover. Woodrow at 542. The economic loss rule, fraudulent
misrepresentation, and negligent misrepresentation will not be discussed as per your request to
specifically bar those claims from this memorandum. However, negligent misrepresentation and
fraudulent inducement, although separate claims, are very similar and for that reason courts
sometimes analyze them in the same manner. Additionally, a fraud claim must be plead with
specificity and particularity and prove how alleged statements are false. Celebration at 833. In this

Farm Pond Water Quality Testing
Memorandum
To: Town of Framingham
From: Michael Baldwin
Date: October 17, 2015
Subject: Farm Pond water quality testing
Introduction:
My name is Michael Baldwin, I am a senior at Framingham State University where I am studying
environmental science. The ecology class at the university was recently tasked with collecting
water quality data on Farm Pond. This memo intends to inform the town of Framingham of the data
that was collected, and how it might be analyzed to better understand the water quality and
ecosystem health of Farm Pond as it relates to recreational use.
Methods:
In order to assess the water quality of Farm Pond the class collected a variety of data. The class
was broken into groups which collected multiple types of data from different parts of the pond.
Data was collected from both littoral (area shallow enough for rooted vegetation) and limnetic (area
too deep to support rooted vegetation) zones in the pond.
In the littoral zone three groups collected data on water temperature, pH, water depth and biota.
Sampling was done along three transects, where samples were taken at 1,2,3 and 4 meters from
shore.
Water pH was measured using standard pH paper as well as an electronic pH meter. Water
temperature was measured using a thermometer. Water depth was physically measured. Biota data
included the percentage of vegetative coverage in sample plots which was measured visually. In
addition, samples of benthic macro invertebrates were taken using a net drag

Review Of Google s Writing And Seo Blog
Review and SEO blog post Over the past several years, Google has made multiple changes to the
way we see search results. However, these changes are not always made so clear and could have
a major effect on companies or individuals looking to optimize your SEO efforts. When Google
decides to update its algorithms, these changes can vary in how major the updates are but each
one of them has the chance to crush your SEO optimization. In 2009, during their Searchology
conference, Google introduced one of their newest ideas which was rich snippets. Rich snippets are
additional details about regarding specific pages in the search results. Ever wonder why people
started seeing reviews for their products directly in the SERP? Well this is the exact reason why. A
review is simply a person s evaluation of something. For Google, this can apply to several things
including a business s specific domain or a certain product of theirs. Google displays two separate
forms of reviews when it comes to rich snippets. The two different types of reviews in Google s
search results pages are critics reviews and review snippets. Review snippets are generally an
average of all of the combined rating scores from reviewers. This allows you to gauge how your
product or business is viewed within a larger audience range. Not only will Google show you text
to go along with the review, but it will also be represented on a numerical scale such as 1 5 or 1 10.
Review snippets are available for local

Essay on Branched Chain Amino Acids On Sports Performance
With sportsmen seeking alternatives to illegal and unsafe performance enhancing drugs, ergogenic
aids have come to their rescue. Ergogenic aids are supplements that enhance the performance of
athletes by improving their speed, strength and agility. A number of natural products are marketed
as ergogenic aids, which have found a ready market among sportspersons. Their biggest advantage
is that they are legal, apart from being safe and effective. Examples of such aids include branched
chain amino acids, creatine, medium chain triglycerides, pyruvates and vitamins.
I. What are Branched chain amino acids?
Branched chain amino acids (BCAA) are amino ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Oxidation of these amino acids occurs in skeletal muscles. Though BCAAs are not used as a source
of energy in the body under normal conditions, they do contribute to energy generation during
heavy and strenuous exercise. The subsequent breakdown of these amino acids for energy
generation during heavy exercise leads to muscle damage and tear. Therefore, restoring them with
the help of protein supplements is extremely necessary to make up for the loss of proteins.
IV. Effect on athletic performance Innumerable studies have investigated the effects of BCAAs on
the performance of athletes. Studies and clinical trials have investigated their potential role in
decreasing fatigue, improving physical performance, increasing strength and affecting cognitive
abilities. A few of the most significant studies are discussed here. While BCAAs have been found
to be of help in enhancing sports performance, there is lack of sufficient evidence from clinical
trials. Therefore, while the intake of BCAAs has been proved to be of help in some cases, their
overall benefit in enhancement of sports performance is still debated and needs strong evidence.
Reduction of fatigue
BCAAs are reported to reduce central fatigue

A Brief Look at Amnesia
Amnesia is when people forget things easily. They tend to forget information that is stored in
their memory. If you are a little forgetful it doesn t mean you have amnesia, but if you forget a
lot of memories that you should have not forgot you have amnesia. Examples of amnesia are
important milestones in your life, memorable events, key people in life, and important fact that
we have been told or taught. Just like you see something happen and then someone asks you what
happened and you can t remember. Normal causes could be from brain damage or using sedative
drugs. Alzheimer s disease is one of the big diseases you could get from amnesia. People find it
hard to imagine the future if they have amnesia. (Researchers form Washington University in St.
Louis, Christina Nordqvist. 2009) used advanced brain imaging techniques to show the
remembering the past and envisioning the future may go hand in hand, with each process
sparking strikingly similar patterns of activity within precisely the same broad network of brain
regions. Remembering events and experiences is a very complex brain process. Although amnesia
is a popular theme for movies and books, it is a very rare condition (Christina Nordqvist, 2009).
Retrograde Amnesia is when you get a blow to the head that could lose memoryfor certain details or
events that occurred prior. The lost memories return slowly, but the older memoires tend to come
back first. In almost all cases investigated, memories for recent events have

Langston Hughes Inspiration
There are countless times as one grows up when you just stop for a second and reminisce on
random things. These memories serve for a very special purpose as the things you do in life
shapes you into the person you will become. Today, many authors and poets make use of their
memories and experiences in their work as a way to reflect back on their lives, raise awareness, or
just simply to tell a story. As a prominent contributor to the Harlem Renaissance, Langston Hughes
was an inspirational poet who highlighted many aspects of the urban life of African Americans
through reflections of his own life and experiences. As a writer, a poet and a prominent activist of
the civil rights movement, Langston Hughes was a man that was not only... Show more content on

Through this mindset, Hughes set out to revolutionize poetry and created such expressive and
inspirational work just by reflecting on his own life. He also takes into account with the existing
racism at this time that was against him and anyone of color. By incorporating his life into his
work, it created a voice for those who were not able to speak up and as a result, life met art (The
Harlem Project).
Throughout his works, especially his poetry, Hughes also draws inspiration from music. He
describes the blues as sad funny songs too sad to be funny and too funny to be sad as the songs
hold laughter and pain, hunger and heartache (Poetry Criticism). This point of view is
noticeably reflected onto his poems when some stanzas are in the form of the typical blues song
(Poetry Criticism). In other words, the stanza had two nearly identical lines followed by a third
that contrasts the first two and this is seen in Same in Blues where he uses the repetition of the
word baby in the first two lines. In his poetry, Hughes captures the voices, experience, emotions
and spirit of the African Americans during this time. His poems have also been influenced by the
Afro American life essays written by W.E.B. DuBois and the black vernacular (DiYanni p.700
705). This is shown in Fine Clothes to the Jew, as Hughes addresses the hardship and struggle of
urban African Americans in Harlem who left the deep south in hopes of achieving their American
Dream. However,

Integration Paper: Developing My Structural Social Work Framework for Practice
Erin James
Carleton University
As an aspiring social worker, it is important to think about what theories to apply whilst working in
the field. Through a structural approach, I will use multiple theories in my practice, such as
intersectionality in regards to feminist social work and resilience and empowerment. This is because
one theory may not consider the limitations of the model in working to analyze, assess, and provide
intervention for clients (Lundy, 2011).
Intersectionality in terms of feminist social work understands the diversity amongst the experiences
of women based on multiple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This includes class, sexuality, and other structural barriers in which women are oppressed
because of their social location. To be specific, this theory emphasizes how someone s race and
culture, for example, may be factors in their oppression in addition to their gender, not only
focusing on how they are being oppressed based on their gender. I believe this will be important
in my practice as a social worker because I may be working with diverse clients that will have
certain needs based on the structural barriers they are facing in their daily lives. I am interested
in working with women and may work with women who are survivors of violence. Working with
this population would mean that I would have to recognize every aspect of their identity in
order to able to fully help them and advocate for them. For example, if I am working with an
Aboriginal women who is a survivor of violence, it would be effective in using Aboriginal ways of
healing to aid in the process of the client s journey to recovery. This could also mean using different

The Causes Of The French Revolution
The French Revolution was an insurgency in France from 1789 to 1799. It prompted the finish of
the government, and to many wars. A turning point of occasion in current European history, the
French Revolution started in 1789 and finished in the late 1790s. Louis XVI was executed in 1793.
During the eighteenth Century France was the focus point of despotic government. The French
Monarchs had boundless power and they announced themselves as the Representative of God .
Louis XIV was the type of this view. The French Monarch s drew in themselves in sumptuous and
indulgence at the regal court of Versailles. They delighted in boundless power. By the Letter de
Cachet, they captured any individual whenever and detained them. They gave careful
consideration towards their subjects. After Louis XV, Louis XVI rose the position of authority of
France. During that period, the monetary state of France ended up plainly feeble. Louis XVI was a
blameless and basic man. However, he was affected by his ruler Marie Antoinettewho dependably
meddled in the state undertakings.
The Social state of France during the eighteenth century was exceptionally hopeless. The then
French Society was isolated into three classes the Clergy, Nobles and Everyday citizens. The
Clergy had a place with the Main Home. The Pastorate was subВdivided into two gatherings,. the
higher clergy and the lower clergy. The higher clergy possessed the best position in the general

Asch Conformity Study
1.Identify the study (video) you selected.
The study and video I selected was the ASCH Conformity Experiments video. I was drawn to the
ASCH experiment because I am interested in social behavior. The ASCH conformity experiments
was simple, but there is nothing wrong with a minimalistic approach. I think it s interesting to know
that a simplistic approach to an experiment may yield astounding data.
2.Describe what this study demonstrated about human behavior and mental processes using the
results of the study along with information you have learned in Units 1 3.
The ASCH experiment demonstrated that humans conform easily, and it is scary to know that.

The ASCH experiment took place in the physical realm. Influence and conformity may both come
from nature and nurture, but in ASCH experiment video nurture stood out to me.

selected? Why or why not? Explain your reasoning using reference to the study.
Social observation learning is when a person learns by observing others. Social observation learning
was demonstrated in the ASCH experiment video. Social observation plays a role in the ASCH
experiment in the sense that the subjects neglected their own thought process to avoid judgment.
The subjects sat next to each other, moreover, each male subject observed each other s reactions
and tension due to their togetherness.

Imagery In The Grapes Of Wrath
Grapes of Wrath
Author, John Steinbeck, in his novel, Grapes of Wrath, narrates the life of people in Oklahoma
during the time of the Dust Bowl, when no one has everything, but everyone has nothing.
Steinbeck s purpose with this novel is to show different people s point of view and way of life
during this time; what people had to do to for themselves and their families to survive. He adopts a
narrative, everyday tone; therefore causing the reader to feel like they are there with the usage of
imagery and the vernacular familiar to the region during this time period.

The Differences Between Westernized American Culture And...
East Asian Culture This world we live in is such a diverse place with many different cultures,
religions, and traditions. Every culture has their own traditions and rules that they abide by, because
this is the norm for that culture. By stepping out of what you were taught in your culture, and
choosing to learn and try to understand why other cultures do things differently, you earn a new
perceptive on this world. You earn a new respect for not only this other culturethat you are learning
about, but also for your own culture. This paper will be comparing and contrasting the differences
between westernized American culture and East Asian Islamic culture, with a focus on how gender
and religion can influence the everyday life of the individuals living in these different cultures.
American culture can be very diverse on its own; it is the melting pot after all. There are many
different cultures practiced in America, but one may not necessarily be exposed to all of them.
This is very evident in my own situation, because I am from a very small town in southern Indiana.
Being from a small town means that everyone knows everything, about everyone. That being said,
we only have a few families in my home town who were not your typical white, Christian family.
My perspective of American culture my not necessarily be the correct one, but that is my home
town. It was a small farm town, with a mainly white population, where everyone went to the same
church on Sunday, and

Compare And Contrast Classical Conditioning And Operant...
Classical conditioning and operant conditioning are both psychological ways of learning.
Classical conditioning is learning by taking something neutral and associating it with something
that already creates a certain response. For example, if you take something that is not scary like
a baby doll and combine it with scary make up and eerie music, you have changed the response of
the once neutral doll, to have the same response as you would get with scary make up and eerie
music. It can take something you once loved, such as a baby doll, and turn it into something
completely different, like a fear of the baby doll. Could you imagine having your favorite toy turn
into your worst nightmare? Operant conditioningis learning from what outcomes came from
certain behaviors in the past and how that affects future behavior. For example, if you behave
badly in school and are suspended you will learn from the end results of those actions and it will
affect if you behave badly again. Taking into consideration that the last time you behaved badly
in school you were suspended for the rest of the year and were made to retake the entire school
year over again, it may deter you from behaving badly again because you do not wish to go
through that punishment again. Reinforcer is the term used to explain how an incentive after a
reaction increases the probability of someone reacting the same way again. Things that are required
for survival are called primary reinforcers. For example,

Heroes Proved The 2016 election was a turning point for many individuals in the United States, not
least of which were members of the LGBT community. In mid July, President Trump made an
announcement over Twitter that resulted in upheaval and uncertainty for those serving in the military
: transgender soldiers would no longer be allowed to serve in the military in any capacity. The ban
of transgender troops in the military, made in a highly unorthodox manner, should have no major
financial repercussions but may cause many social issues. While the decision has caused open

12). More trans soldiers have expressed their concern that when Donald Trump attacks what
America calls its heroes or its warrior class, it means it s only a matter of time before he starts
attacking and dissembling the American public, and that s what I have the most fear of (Burns
and Lucey, para. 16). However, many politicians are fortunately against the ban, saying that
gender identity should not be relevant in the military selection process, and to choose service
members on other grounds than military qualifications is social policy and has no place in our
military (Burns and Lucey, para. 31). Perhaps most controversial about the interdiction is Trump s
use of the word burden when describing the financial impact of transition related healthcare,
leading to discussion of the financial aspect of the ban. The costs of transition related healthcare
and the effect on the military s readiness and lethality were the main concerns stated in Trump s
announcement. In a series of tweets, Trump said allowing transgender troops to serve is an
unacceptable burden on the military s ability to fight and win wars (Burns and Lucey para. 24).
The Pentagon would not provide an estimate of the costs; however, it is estimated that these costs
would only equal about one percent of the military s budget. The Rand Corp., a federally funded

The Importance Of My Cultural Interview
My culture is essential when understanding who I am as a person and as a future social worker.
The top three elements of my culture include my gender, race, and religious affiliation. My
gender, race, and religious affiliation can heavily impact an interview with a client by
supporting and interfering with the interview process. While some elements of my culture are
more easily viewable than others, all may have a gargantuan impact in my future social work
career with my clients. Upon interviewing a client, one of the first aspects a client will notice
about me is my gender. Discussing my gender is essential when talking about my cultural
identity because being female has shaped my perspectives and experiences in this world and can
even impact my interview with a client. There are advantages and disadvantages to being a
female, mostly demonstrated within my interactions with others, and I will likely bring these
advantages and disadvantages with me in a future interview. Many people, including possible
clients, view females as more nurturing and compassionate when compared to male counterparts.
This bias may influence my ability to do my job effectively and efficiently. This impact will
likely be beneficial as clients could be more open to speaking with a counselor whom he or she
believes could be more sympathetic towards his or her situation. In addition, being female can also
positively impact my experiences with female clients especially those who have experienced

Objective The objective of the experiment was to prepare a yield of tert butylchloride through a
unimolecular (SN1) nucleophilic substitution reaction. Procedure Part A Preparation of tert
Butyl Chloride A test tube was acquired, and 7 mL of concentrated HCl were added to this test
tube through a graduated cylinder, this was done in the fume hood in order to avoid any
noxious fumes from the sample, which were observed when pouring in the concentrated HCl.
After adding the HCl, a glass pipet was used to add 2.5 mL of tert butyl alcohol to the test tube.
It was observed that the alcohol and HCl separated into two layers distinct layers. The solution
was mixed by using the pipet to take the bottom layer and squirt it onto the top, this mixing
process was performed for 15 minutes to allow the solutions to mix well. Afterwards, the lower
aqueous layer of the test tube was removed with the pipet; it was imperative to remove as much
of the lower layer as possible without removing too much from the top layer. The solution was
then washed with water by pouring 2.5 mL of water into the test tube, letting it sit for about a
minute and then removing the aqueous layer again, in order to help the mechanism for this
process. Additionally, about 2.5 mL of sodium bicarbonate 5% were also added to he test tube,

A Summary Of Living Beyond Limits
Amy Purdy s TED talk, Living Beyond Limits , empowers people to push past their boundaries.
She encourages people to embrace their differences and obstacles in life that would normally set
them back. Purdy explained that after she had graduated from high school, she moved from a
large desert to somewhere that snowed, and she became a massage therapist. She finally felt in
control of her own life. Unfortunately, this was all for a very short time because one day soon
after, she left her job early because of what she thought was the flu. Realistically, Purdy had
contracted bacterial meningitis, and was soon laying in the hospital on life support. She lost
both of her legs from the knee down, hearing in her left ear, and both of her kidneys. After she
healed, she tried on a new pair prosthetic legs, and she grew frustrated and immediately felt as
though her life would be restricted and confined forever, that her new legs would impact her life
in a very negative way. After a few months of moping and feeling sorry for herself, she started to
view her position in a new light. She decided she must embrace her new legs, and learn how to
work with them, instead of working against them. She found many benefits to having prosthetic
legs, and it made her realize that her legs weren t a curse. After realizing all of the positives,
Purdy was able to continue with her life, and as time went on, she overcame even more obstacle by
staying positive. Four months after Purdy s health scare,

The Theme Of Empathy In The Ugly Tourist By David Wallace
Empathy is a human device that allows someone to put oneself in another person s situation. This
allows them to have a greater understanding or personal connection of someone s problem. After
reading The Ugly Tourist by Jamaica Kincaid and Consider the Lobster by David Wallace, the
theme of perspective, specifically empathy, is a vital aspect in both essays. Empathy plays a great
role in understanding both writer s perspective, which means to understand a certain point of view
other than oneself. The sense of empathy goes far beyond sympathy, which is just feelingsorry for
someone or something. However, being that empathy stretches to feeling sorry with someone or

incorporate the themes, empathy and perspective in their writing, they do so in different ways.

The Grapes Of Wrath By John Steinbeck And The Grapes Of Wrath
The novels The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck and Under the Feet of Jesus by Helena Maria
Viramontes both explore the plight of migrant farmers in California. Steinbeck tells the story of
white migrant workers during the Great Depression and Viramontes tells the story of Mexican
migrant workers. The novels deconstruct the perceived California dream in which great wealth
can be achieved through hard work by recounting the plights of migrant workers who recognize
the illusion and take action against it. Steinbeck s novel portrays the plight of the Joad family,
natives of Oklahoma. The Joads, a family of dispossessed farmers, travel to California searching
for work after the forces of large scale banking capitalism remove them from their land. They
chase the promise of a new beginning and the opportunity to find wealth because of the
California dream. Steinbeck narrates the journey of an underclass family achieving the Marxist
construction of class consciousness. Class conflict between wage slaves and the owners of the
means of production, social alienation through the separation of labor and profit, and
dehumanization of workers through the mass commodification of labor all appear in the novel.
Class consciousness defines the novel and is the method by which the Joad family is able to rise
against the bourgeois and capitalism. The Joads are a member of the proletariat and must work as
laborers who are, according to Karl Marx, A class of labourers, who live only

Articles Of Confederation And Decentralization Of The States
Under the Articles of Confederation, the United States government was decentralized. The states
had more power than the federal government. State governments had the power to tax but the
federal government did not (Janda 62). This caused congress to have to beg for money from the
states in order to pay for the cost of the Revolutionary War and the cost of starting a new nation.
Another issue under the Articles of Confederationwas the lack of economic control the federal
government had on the states (63). The national government attempted to restrict foreign imports
but the states did not listen and continued making deals with foreign countries. This caused debt
and bankruptcy to fall upon numerous states. The Articles of Confederation also

Eighteenth Century Religious Change in Uncle Tom s Cabin...
Eighteenth Century Religious Change in Uncle Tom s Cabin and Moby Dick
The central religious themes of Uncle Tom s Cabin and Moby Dick reflect the turbulent and
changing religious climate of their time. In their use of themes from both traditional Calvinism and
modern reform, the syncretic efforts of both of these texts offers a response to the uncertainty and
change of the period. However, their uses of these themes are different; while Stowe used a precise
focus on a Christian polemic against slavery, Melville intentionally de centralized his text in a way
that asks the reader to look beyond the medium of expression to the truth which lays behind it, but
cannot be contained in it.
In this paper, I will investigate the shift in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Neither one of them can be precisely placed in any of the religious categories of the period;
Calvinism (both orthodox and reformed), Unitarianism, Transcendentalism, and liberal
Christocentric humanism all exerted definite influences on both works, but both works similarly
resist direct placement not only because of the syncretic nature of their programs, but the fluidity of
these very traditions. Therefore, while some hesitancy is a necessary hazard of such a
investigation, it nevertheless preserves a respect for the complexity of the religious history involved.
With this much said precautionarily, it is nevertheless possible to place both of these works in the
climate of questioning, re definition, and uncertainty which occurred in the American political and
social scenes as part of this religious shift. The first important factor in this shift was the Second
Great Awakening; while William McLoughlin dates its conclusion at 1830, it had an important
influence on both of these works which were composed between 1850 and 1852. This movement
established a break from the Calvinism of Jonathan Edwards through both in popular form of
revivals and its connection to the more elite movement of Unitarianism, and thus set a precedent for
later religious reform.
The concept of American nationhood was challenged in the early eighteenth century on

Kant s Categorical Imperative Of The Modern Era
Emmanuel Kant was an influential philosopher and strong proponent of the modern era. Besides
his large contribution to epistemology and metaphysics, his work in ethics was just as substantial.
Kant s ethics came to propose an objective morality, where moral judgments is not only true
according to a person s subjective view. He believed the moral worth of an action is not determined
by its consequence but the motive behind it. Through Kant s ethics, he demonstrates this duty
through his unconditional moral principle, the categorical imperative. The categorical imperative
expresses that moralityis not about the outcome (good or bad), but the right action regardless of
the outcome. It is the responsibility to do one s duty for its own sake and not in pursuit of one s
own desire.
One formulation of Kant s categorical imperative instructs us to act only in such a way that I
can also will that my maxim should become a universal law. Before going into the formulation, a
maxim for Kant is just not a rule for how to act but a middle stage between experience and the
categorical imperative. Kant describes this as a subjective rule , that is, a rule that is deliberated
at the subjective level. Consider a case of human interaction, in which one has to decide his
behavior in the form, X does such an action to Y . We may ask the moral question should X do
such an action to Y? According to Kant, X response cannot derive from desire or pleasure but
rather give a deliberate and

Andrew Carnegie, Eugene V. Debs, and Horatio Alger Essay
Andrew Carnegie, Eugene V. Debs, and Horatio Alger
During the late nineteenth century rapid industrialization paved the way for extreme economical
wealth of many business. In accordance with the overflowing wealth in the nineteenth century
many individuals held similar but yet contrasting views toward the wealth that was created in the
United States. Among these individuals were AndrewCarnegie, Eugene V. Debs, and HoratioAlger.
One of the best known philanthropists was the American industrialist Andrew Carnegie, who
devoted the latter part of his life to giving away most of the huge fortune he had amassed in the
steel industry. Following the principles laid down in his essay Gospel of Wealth , Carnegie

The doctrine specifically advocates nationalization of natural resources, basic industries, banking

monopolized branches of industry and trade, viewing monopolies as inimical to the public welfare.
Debs attitudes toward the wealth that was create was that the government should redistribute it, so
that everyone could be equal economically. Even though this idea may seem absurd it can be
looked upon as an action of Andrew Carnegie in a less radical form.
Washington differed from both Carnegie and Debs but yet still held one similar aspect that ties him
with them. On September 18, 1895, in Atlanta, Georgia, Washington made his famous compromise
speech. In this address he urged blacks to accept their inferior social position for the present and to
strive to raise themselves through vocational training and economic self reliance. This attitude of
able to achieve economically through hard work contrasts the idea of both Carnegie and Debs.
Carnegie believed in predestined wealth. However Washington s attitude was if one works hard, one
can become rich. It also contrasts Debs attitude because Debs believed in the redistribution of
wealth. However despite theses differences there is one thing that ties them together: the
redistribution of wealth. Washington founded

Sojourner Truth is remembered as an ex slave who changed her name from Isabella and gave her
famous Ain t I a Woman speech regarding abolition and women s rights. But before her speech,
Truth actively participated in a religious cult and faced a murder charge. Authors Paul E. Johnson
and Sean Wilentz provide a descriptive account of the religious cult in their book The Kingdom of
Matthias: A Story of Sex and Salvation in 19th century America. Their book follows the life of
Robert Matthews and the events of his life leading up to the creation of his new religionin New York
in the 1830s. Robert Matthews started to refer to himself as the prophet Matthias and recruited
wealthy families to join his religion where they lived in isolation. American society in the 1830s
encountered rapid change with the emergence of the market revolution and the Second Great

led Matthias to create and influenced his own religion which other Americans eventually denounced.
Robert Matthews grew up in New York to Scotland immigrants and attended the Anti Burgher

people eat it on a regular basis. A study noted that regularly eating fast food leads to a chance of
developing insulin resistance, which heightens risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Fast food
restaurants are linked to a greater risk of cardiovascular health problems. Junk food is associated
with an increased risk of death even after ruling out deaths due to cardiovascular conditions. In
conclusion, if we have healthier food we will have less health problems.
Healthier food will make us a more productive country. One in three children are physically
active every day. I feel that if food was healthier then that would not happen. Eating well
balanced, healthy food can help you reduce or maintain your weight. The food we eat affects us
more than we realize. Obese people are less productive in the workplace and more prone to injury,
a study claims. One problem with junk foods is that they re low in satiation value. Studies claim
that people who eat unhealthy food and are overweight need a longer work break. Also if they are
more prone to injury than they might have to

Javert Hunted Valjean
Javert, the inspector who chased Valjean, had one major turning point in Victor Hugo s novel.
Throughout the novel Javert hunted Valjean with a sense of justice and law. Javert believed in
enforcing society s law to such an extent it made him not think whether the laws were just.
However, throughout the novel it became evident that Javert not only wanted to follow the law, but
also started to enjoy hounding Valjean. Then, with a demonic and sensual pleasure, he settled
down to enjoy himself. He played his man knowing that he had him, deliberately postponing the
climax, granting him a last illusion of freedom, relishing the situation like a spider with a fly
buzzing in its web or a cat letting a mouse run between its paws the ecstasy of watching

Horrifying War In Dulce Et Decorum Est By Wilfred Owen
In the poem, Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen, shows how truly horrifying war can be. By
using incredibly detailed imagery and effective language to show just what happened during war
time and making readers experience feelings such as pity, sorrow, and remorse. Owen describes
the many hardships that the soldiers went through even so far as describing a deadly gas attack
that claimed one of the soldiers and had burned into his mind the scaring imagery of someone he
knew choking to deathbecause of the deadly mist that was all around them. Owenspoem is very
genuine since he had participated in the bloody savagery that was World War 1. The poem
begins with a detailed description of the lifestyle and poor conditions that the soldiers had to
endure on a day to day basis which led them to age incredibly quickly. Bent double, like old
beggars under sacks, Knock kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge This quote
suggest that the soldiers were like homeless people, dirty and sick. This comes as a surprise
because many people believe that the appearance of soldiers are to be muscular and alethic, not
scrawny and weak but their appearances changed drastically because the conditions they were
living in were beyond imagination (Owen, p.723). This first quote is where we get the impression
that the speaker was there during the events since he uses we to explain how they went through the
sludge. This imagery helps to display how hard it must have been to move yet

The Iran Contra Affair The Public
During the Iran Contra affair the public, as well as congress, were left in the dark about a deal
was made with the enemy country of Iran to sell weapons to them to aid in their war with Iraq.
Once sold the Profit were given to the Contras in Nicaragua. I will be arguing that advertising
dollars, using the military as a source, and flak were used to skew the public s perception of how
the affair took place. When all of this began President Reagan had told Lieutenant Colonel Oliver
North, who also worked as the head of the National Security Council, that he needed a way to get
Iranback on our side after the fall of their previous leader Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, known
as The Shah . While The Shah was in power Iran was one of America s... Show more content on

Now North had to find a way to both help the president fulfill his desire of getting Iran back on
our side and helping the Anti Communist regime down in south America. So North, along with
other government officials, sold the 12.5 million dollars worth of weapons to Iran for 30 million.
To avoid detection the 12.5 million was transferred into an American bank account while the
remaining profit of 17.5 million was transfer to a Swiss bank account. From there the money was
wired to the Contras and used in the war effort. Once this information had started spreading
throughout the American public artist began to make work based on the Conflict as both a way
of raising awareness and to put blame on those who are responsible. When looking at Steve
Greenberg s work you see he is focusing on President Reagan and adding in type that is an
American citizen s point of view on how that affair took place. Each from does not play out
second to second but more in one motion then the next used as a way to show a longer period of
time passing. President Reagan was known for always having jelly beans on his desk so that
artist uses that as a way for the viewer to recognize who it is without writing it somewhere on the
page. This was one of multiple pieces of work Greenburg did as a way of letting the American
people know that even though he may not be taking blame for it, the President knew what was
happening. Others

How Did The Colonists Respond To The Declaration Of...
Before the U.S. Colonists signed the Declaration of Independence they were upset with England
for not giving them enough power. After the French Indian War, taxation was a major issue with
the stamp act taxing paper, as well as the tea act, taxing tea. Colonists were opposed to these taxes
and rebelled with the Boston Tea Party. Many of these rebellions led to bloodshed as with the case
of the Boston Massacre. The colonists were not only upset about taxing and violence, but were also
upset for not having enough power in the colonial government. Thomas Jefferson wrote the
declaration of independence to King George III in order to give themselves self government.
However the king rejected the declaration, so the colonist needed to fight and prove... Show more

The battles of Lexington and Concord, fought outside of Boston, were the start of the
revolutionary war. Even though the colonist failed to defend against the British in the battles of
Lexington and concord, they were able to surprise and catch the British off guard using Guerilla
tactics. Colonists would hide in trees and bushes and ambush the British troops, who were
expecting more of a traditional stand off type of battle. After the battles of Lexington and Concord
the colonists had a better understanding of what was needed to defeat the British. Under the
guidance of general George Washington, the colonists performance in battle was terrible, however
their performance began to improve to where they began winning battles consistently. The war
began to go well for the colonists and ended in a victory over Yorktown. In the battle of Yorktown,
general George Washington, and his army faced the British army led by general George Cornwallis.
George Washington with help of french troops encircled the British preventing escaping from
Yorktown. General Cornwallis surrendered on October 17,1781, terminating the war for

Nigeria, The Most Populous African Country, With Enormous
Nigeria, the most populous African country, with enormous potential in agriculture. If well
managed, has the potential to become a global powerhouse through agro industrialization.
Agriculture, presently contributes less than 28% of the GDP of Nigeria, ironically holds the key for
the accelerated growth and diversification and job creation for Nigerian economy. No country of
the world has moved to industrialized economy status without passing through the transformation of
the agricultural sector.
The reason is simple. Agriculture provides the basic raw materials needed for industrial
development. Food accounts for the highest share of consumer price index and providing cheap
food is critical for taming inflation.
When inflation is low, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And it must start with treating agriculture as a business. It must start with taking a full value chain
approach to modernize agriculture, from the farm to the table. And it must start with supporting
agro industrial development.
The time is therefore short. Nigeria must rapidly invest in the development of its agro industry, it
must learn from experiences elsewhere, where agriculture has been the foundation for driving fast
paced economic growth, by building a strong food and agro industrial manufacturing base quickly.
Korea for example, was in serious rural and urban poverty just fifty years ago.
Not now. Korea s per capita GDP is now 17 times that of Sub Saharan Africa, while its total GDP
is $1.3 trillion, compared to $1.6 trillion for sub Saharan Africa put together. Korea is the 11th
largest economy in the world and is a generous donor of development finance. It s an extraordinary
success story.
But it wasn t a miracle. It came from many factors that came together: strong political
determination, solid long term planning and execution, structural transformation policies and robust
investments in human capital.
There was a clear plan: drive import substitution by raising agricultural productivity through
industrialization to achieve food self sufficiency.
More generally, the successful Asian experience offers us important lessons for agro
industrialization. Today, Asia s agricultural output is led by large private agri business

To A Daughter Leaving Home By Mrs. Pastan
The title of the poem is To a Daughter leaving Home it tells you a lot of what the poem is talking
about. I decided to use this poem because my parents are both going through what this mother is
going through, graduating college and soon starting my life in the military. Mrs. Pastan wrote this
poem describing a parents emotional state as her daughter goes away. In the poem the stanzas all
have different meanings but three caught my eye. The first one was the moment as she ran along
side her daughter teaching her to ride a bike, which symbolizes how the speaker has raised her
daughter and was with her through all the wobbles in her life. The second one is the daughter rides
further and further away on the bike, the speaker is growing more

Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin Assassination
From peasant to supreme mystic, Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin rose through the Russian hierarchy
using his captivating appearance, charm, and supernatural ability. Rasputin s quick surge of
reputation frightened many and rumors started to grow. The divided population recognized
Rasputin as either a healer and prophet or a mad monk with malintent. Questioning Rasputin s
motives and influence, government officials plotted against him. Eventually came a day that the
aristocrats assassinated Rasputin after several failed attempts. Considering the possibility of
assassination, Rasputin left behind prophecy with consequences that would soon follow. Prior to
Rasputin s assassination, extraordinary events unraveled in the realization of his power. Under
unfortunate circumstances, Rasputin was immediately born into poverty on January 21, 1869.

Czar s confidence and belief in Rasputin was a result of his seemingly miracle work. Rasputin

many were impressed by Rasputin, he by no means had complete influence over the noble family.
Rasputin s only duty was to mitigate the disease of Alexis. Inevitably though, Rasputin became a

Hydraulic Jump Experiment Essay
Hydraulic Jump Experiment
SUMMARY
The Objective of this experiment is to observe the flow patterns and behaviour of the water before
after the jump Also to quantify the energy lost due to a hydraulic jump. The observed and
theoretical ratios of upstream and downstream depths will be compared, this will show the
limitations to purely theoretical analysis.
The experiment showed that a hydraulic jump occurs when when liquid at high velocity
discharges into a zone of lower velocity, a rather abrupt rise occurs in the liquid surface. The
rapidly flowing liquid is abruptly slowed and increases in height.
The results clearly show the limitations of purely theoretical and purely experimental analysis due
to the range of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hydraulic jump occurs when the supercritical flow occurs in a channel of which normal flow
condition is subcritical.
h2/h1 = ВЅ (в€
љ(1+8F12 ) 1)(4)
The Froude number is calculated using this equation:
F1 = в€
љ(q2/gh12)(5)
The hydraulic jump, also known as standing wave, is a rapid transition from supercritical flow to
subcritical flow. The transition is generally a turbulent process with a significant energy loss(∆E).
that can not be neglected. A hydraulic jump is commonly used to dissipate energy, and reduce the
downstream velocity.
To calculate the specific energy at the two separate heights this equation is used:
E = h1 + q2/2gh12(6)
The total energy loss can be derived as
О”E = E1 E2(7)
To find the height of the jump between the smallest and largest heights:
О”h = h2 h1(8)
Finally, the length of the hydraulic jump is given by:
L = 5О”h(9)

  • 2. Gerald Graff Hidden Intellectualism Summary Goodman 6 Richard Goodman English Comp II Mrs. Cravens 21 February 2018 Audience in Mind What makes a good writer? Many people have differing opinions on what makes a person a good writer, or the standard in which one can write. One of the main things to remember about writing is to always keep your audience in mind, and adjust you writing style and language accordingly. Also remember that writing is process which takes time to perfect. English has never been one of my favorite subjects, mainly just because I never really consider myself to be a good writer and by the normal standard I may not be. In a sense though, I found contrary to my belief that my writing wasn t all that bad. Now it took time for me to see that for myself, because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There some people that are incredibly street smart but do not fair so well in school but in Gerald Graff s Hidden Intellectualism Graff argues that street smarts are just as important as book smarts. Graff says that It is a matter of finding points of convergence and translation, moments when student discourse can be translated into academic discourse and vice versa, producing a kind of bilingualism on both sides of the student teacher divide (Graff, Hidden Intellectualism). In other words, for a student with street smarts to learn to read academically, students need to read things that interest them, encouraging them to dive into their reading, forming an opinion and arguing their point. When you think about it this does makes sense, you can t get that student to read more intellectual readings without first starting with something that interest them and then let them naturally move toward more intellectual reading. I myself was this way in high school, I was always uninterested in the required readings. Many times, failed to even read them and when I did it was just to get a grade. I never really formed my own opinion of the reading, except for the fact that I just didn t like it. However, when we could pick our own reading material, something that interested me, I was more drawn in and able to form my own opinion, caring about what I was reading. By doing so this allows students with street smarts, to not only become drawn toward the more intellectual reading, it will get to a point where they want to argue their points and form their own opinions. The question though is being street smart better than book smart, and in my opinion, this can be situational, depending on what you are doing would determine which one is better but when coupled they work well together. • 3. Different Methods, Bacteria, And Development Transduction,... Through three different methods, bacteria can obtain new genetic material: conjugation, transduction and transformation Transduction is when a bacteriophage inserts it s DNA into the host bacteria cell, while conjugation is when the bacteria shares DNA through direct contact, eg. horizontal gene transfer. The third method, transformation, is the intake of external DNA into the cell (Chen and Dubnau, 2004). In order for bacteriato be able to take in extraneous DNA, they must first be in a state of competent (Hanahan, 1983). There are two types of transformation cells in transformation: natural competence and artificial competence. Natural transformation can occur in both gram negative and gram positive bacteria, but have different pathways to take in the new DNA. There are several ways to induce competence onto some bacteria cells, that are not naturally competence. Cells can be treated to heat shock, starved of nutrients, the use of electroporation or keep in ionic solutions to induce competence by increasing the permeability of the membrane (Van der Rest et al., 1999). Plasmids are circular double stranded DNA found in bacteria that can encode for basic necessary functions (Couturier, et al., 1988). Ampicillin (6[D( ) a aminophenylacetamido] penicillanic acid) is an antibiotic that is a derivative of penicillin and is can work against both gram negative and gram positive bacteria (Acred et al. 1962) The experiment insisted of insertion of plasmids that ... However, these changes are not always made so clear and could have a major effect on companies or individuals looking to optimize your SEO efforts. When Google decides to update its algorithms, these changes can vary in how major the updates are but each one of them has the chance to crush your SEO optimization. In 2009, during their Searchology conference, Google introduced one of their newest ideas which was rich snippets. Rich snippets are additional details about regarding specific pages in the search results. Ever wonder why people started seeing reviews for their products directly in the SERP? Well this is the exact reason why. A review is simply a person s evaluation of something. The two different types of reviews in Google s search results pages are critics reviews and review snippets. Review snippets are generally an average of all of the combined rating scores from reviewers. This allows you to gauge how your product or business is viewed within a larger audience range. Not only will Google show you text to go along with the review, but it will also be represented on a numerical scale such as 1 5 or 1 10. Review snippets are available for local ... Throughout his works, especially his poetry, Hughes also draws inspiration from music. He describes the blues as sad funny songs too sad to be funny and too funny to be sad as the songs hold laughter and pain, hunger and heartache (Poetry Criticism). This point of view is noticeably reflected onto his poems when some stanzas are in the form of the typical blues song (Poetry Criticism). In other words, the stanza had two nearly identical lines followed by a third that contrasts the first two and this is seen in Same in Blues where he uses the repetition of the word baby in the first two lines. Every culture has their own traditions and rules that they abide by, because this is the norm for that culture. By stepping out of what you were taught in your culture, and choosing to learn and try to understand why other cultures do things differently, you earn a new perceptive on this world. You earn a new respect for not only this other culturethat you are learning about, but also for your own culture. This paper will be comparing and contrasting the differences between westernized American culture and East Asian Islamic culture, with a focus on how gender and religion can influence the everyday life of the individuals living in these different cultures. American culture can be very diverse on its own; it is the melting pot after all. There are many different cultures practiced in America, but one may not necessarily be exposed to all of them. This is very evident in my own situation, because I am from a very small town in southern Indiana. Being from a small town means that everyone knows everything, about everyone. That being said, we only have a few families in my home town who were not your typical white, Christian family. My perspective of American culture my not necessarily be the correct one, but that is my home town. It was a small farm town, with a mainly white population, where everyone went to the same church on Sunday, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. Compare And Contrast Classical Conditioning And Operant... Classical conditioning and operant conditioning are both psychological ways of learning. Classical conditioning is learning by taking something neutral and associating it with something that already creates a certain response. For example, if you take something that is not scary like a baby doll and combine it with scary make up and eerie music, you have changed the response of the once neutral doll, to have the same response as you would get with scary make up and eerie music. It can take something you once loved, such as a baby doll, and turn it into something completely different, like a fear of the baby doll. Could you imagine having your favorite toy turn into your worst nightmare? Operant conditioningis learning from what outcomes came from certain behaviors in the past and how that affects future behavior. For example, if you behave badly in school and are suspended you will learn from the end results of those actions and it will affect if you behave badly again. Taking into consideration that the last time you behaved badly in school you were suspended for the rest of the year and were made to retake the entire school year over again, it may deter you from behaving badly again because you do not wish to go through that punishment again. Reinforcer is the term used to explain how an incentive after a reaction increases the probability of someone reacting the same way again. More trans soldiers have expressed their concern that when Donald Trump attacks what America calls its heroes or its warrior class, it means it s only a matter of time before he starts attacking and dissembling the American public, and that s what I have the most fear of (Burns and Lucey, para. 16). However, many politicians are fortunately against the ban, saying that gender identity should not be relevant in the military selection process, and to choose service members on other grounds than military qualifications is social policy and has no place in our military (Burns and Lucey, para. 31). Perhaps most controversial about the interdiction is Trump s use of the word burden when describing the financial impact of transition related healthcare, leading to discussion of the financial aspect of the ban. The costs of transition related healthcare and the effect on the military s readiness and lethality were the main concerns stated in Trump s announcement. In a series of tweets, Trump said allowing transgender troops to serve is an unacceptable burden on the military s ability to fight and win wars (Burns and Lucey para. 24). The Grapes Of Wrath By John Steinbeck And The Grapes Of Wrath The novels The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck and Under the Feet of Jesus by Helena Maria Viramontes both explore the plight of migrant farmers in California. Steinbeck tells the story of white migrant workers during the Great Depression and Viramontes tells the story of Mexican migrant workers. The novels deconstruct the perceived California dream in which great wealth can be achieved through hard work by recounting the plights of migrant workers who recognize the illusion and take action against it. Steinbeck s novel portrays the plight of the Joad family, natives of Oklahoma. The Joads, a family of dispossessed farmers, travel to California searching for work after the forces of large scale banking capitalism remove them from their land. They chase the promise of a new beginning and the opportunity to find wealth because of the California dream. Steinbeck narrates the journey of an underclass family achieving the Marxist construction of class consciousness. Class conflict between wage slaves and the owners of the means of production, social alienation through the separation of labor and profit, and dehumanization of workers through the mass commodification of labor all appear in the novel. Eighteenth Century Religious Change in Uncle Tom s Cabin and Moby Dick The central religious themes of Uncle Tom s Cabin and Moby Dick reflect the turbulent and changing religious climate of their time. In their use of themes from both traditional Calvinism and modern reform, the syncretic efforts of both of these texts offers a response to the uncertainty and change of the period. However, their uses of these themes are different; while Stowe used a precise focus on a Christian polemic against slavery, Melville intentionally de centralized his text in a way that asks the reader to look beyond the medium of expression to the truth which lays behind it, but cannot be contained in it. With this much said precautionarily, it is nevertheless possible to place both of these works in the climate of questioning, re definition, and uncertainty which occurred in the American political and social scenes as part of this religious shift. • 37. Kant s Categorical Imperative Of The Modern Era Emmanuel Kant was an influential philosopher and strong proponent of the modern era. Besides his large contribution to epistemology and metaphysics, his work in ethics was just as substantial. Kant s ethics came to propose an objective morality, where moral judgments is not only true according to a person s subjective view. He believed the moral worth of an action is not determined by its consequence but the motive behind it. Through Kant s ethics, he demonstrates this duty through his unconditional moral principle, the categorical imperative. The categorical imperative expresses that moralityis not about the outcome (good or bad), but the right action regardless of the outcome. It is the responsibility to do one s duty for its own sake and not in pursuit of one s own desire. One formulation of Kant s categorical imperative instructs us to act only in such a way that I can also will that my maxim should become a universal law. Before going into the formulation, a maxim for Kant is just not a rule for how to act but a middle stage between experience and the categorical imperative. Kant describes this as a subjective rule , that is, a rule that is deliberated at the subjective level. Consider a case of human interaction, in which one has to decide his behavior in the form, X does such an action to Y . We may ask the moral question should X do such an action to Y? • 45. How Did The Colonists Respond To The Declaration Of... Before the U.S. Colonists signed the Declaration of Independence they were upset with England for not giving them enough power. After the French Indian War, taxation was a major issue with the stamp act taxing paper, as well as the tea act, taxing tea. Colonists were opposed to these taxes and rebelled with the Boston Tea Party. Many of these rebellions led to bloodshed as with the case of the Boston Massacre. The colonists were not only upset about taxing and violence, but were also upset for not having enough power in the colonial government. Thomas Jefferson wrote the declaration of independence to King George III in order to give themselves self government. However the king rejected the declaration, so the colonist needed to fight and prove... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The battles of Lexington and Concord, fought outside of Boston, were the start of the revolutionary war. Even though the colonist failed to defend against the British in the battles of Lexington and concord, they were able to surprise and catch the British off guard using Guerilla tactics. Colonists would hide in trees and bushes and ambush the British troops, who were expecting more of a traditional stand off type of battle. After the battles of Lexington and Concord the colonists had a better understanding of what was needed to defeat the British. Under the guidance of general George Washington, the colonists performance in battle was terrible, however their performance began to improve to where they began winning battles consistently. The war began to go well for the colonists and ended in a victory over Yorktown. In the battle of Yorktown, general George Washington, and his army faced the British army led by general George Cornwallis. George Washington with help of french troops encircled the British preventing escaping from Yorktown. General Cornwallis surrendered on October 17,1781, terminating the war for ... • 46. Nigeria, The Most Populous African Country, With Enormous Nigeria, the most populous African country, with enormous potential in agriculture. If well managed, has the potential to become a global powerhouse through agro industrialization. Agriculture, presently contributes less than 28% of the GDP of Nigeria, ironically holds the key for the accelerated growth and diversification and job creation for Nigerian economy. No country of the world has moved to industrialized economy status without passing through the transformation of the agricultural sector. The reason is simple. Agriculture provides the basic raw materials needed for industrial development. Food accounts for the highest share of consumer price index and providing cheap food is critical for taming inflation. When inflation is low, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And it must start with treating agriculture as a business. It must start with taking a full value chain approach to modernize agriculture, from the farm to the table. And it must start with supporting agro industrial development. The time is therefore short. Nigeria must rapidly invest in the development of its agro industry, it must learn from experiences elsewhere, where agriculture has been the foundation for driving fast paced economic growth, by building a strong food and agro industrial manufacturing base quickly. Korea for example, was in serious rural and urban poverty just fifty years ago. Not now. Korea s per capita GDP is now 17 times that of Sub Saharan Africa, while its total GDP is $1.3 trillion, compared to $1.6 trillion for sub Saharan Africa put together. Korea is the 11th largest economy in the world and is a generous donor of development finance. It s an extraordinary success story. But it wasn t a miracle. It came from many factors that came together: strong political determination, solid long term planning and execution, structural transformation policies and robust investments in human capital. There was a clear plan: drive import substitution by raising agricultural productivity through industrialization to achieve food self sufficiency. More generally, the successful Asian experience offers us important lessons for agro industrialization. Today, Asia s agricultural output is led by large private agri business ... • 47. To A Daughter Leaving Home By Mrs. Pastan The title of the poem is To a Daughter leaving Home it tells you a lot of what the poem is talking about. I decided to use this poem because my parents are both going through what this mother is going through, graduating college and soon starting my life in the military. Mrs. Pastan wrote this poem describing a parents emotional state as her daughter goes away. In the poem the stanzas all have different meanings but three caught my eye. The first one was the moment as she ran along side her daughter teaching her to ride a bike, which symbolizes how the speaker has raised her daughter and was with her through all the wobbles in her life. The second one is the daughter rides further and further away on the bike, the speaker is growing more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin Assassination From peasant to supreme mystic, Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin rose through the Russian hierarchy using his captivating appearance, charm, and supernatural ability. Rasputin s quick surge of reputation frightened many and rumors started to grow. The divided population recognized Rasputin as either a healer and prophet or a mad monk with malintent. Questioning Rasputin s motives and influence, government officials plotted against him. Eventually came a day that the aristocrats assassinated Rasputin after several failed attempts. Considering the possibility of assassination, Rasputin left behind prophecy with consequences that would soon follow. Prior to Rasputin s assassination, extraordinary events unraveled in the realization of his power. Under unfortunate circumstances, Rasputin was immediately born into poverty on January 21, 1869. Being within the small boundaries that a Siberian peasant family provided, Rasputin... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recently learning of this mysterious man and having few options, the Czar and his wife called upon Rasputin for medical assistance. On the day of Rasputin s arrival, Nicholas II recorded an entry that stated, we have got to know a man of God Grigori from the Tobolsk Province. The Czar s confidence and belief in Rasputin was a result of his seemingly miracle work. Rasputin was able to prevent further bleeding of their son Alexis. Mosolov, a bystander, spoke of his incontestable success in healing. Alexis previous nurse, Teglova, also commented saying, Call it what you will, he could really promise her [the Empress] her boy s life while he lived. Although many were impressed by Rasputin, he by no means had complete influence over the noble family. Rasputin s only duty was to mitigate the disease of Alexis. • 49. Hydraulic Jump Experiment Essay Hydraulic Jump Experiment SUMMARY The Objective of this experiment is to observe the flow patterns and behaviour of the water before after the jump Also to quantify the energy lost due to a hydraulic jump. The observed and theoretical ratios of upstream and downstream depths will be compared, this will show the limitations to purely theoretical analysis. The experiment showed that a hydraulic jump occurs when when liquid at high velocity discharges into a zone of lower velocity, a rather abrupt rise occurs in the liquid surface. The rapidly flowing liquid is abruptly slowed and increases in height. The results clearly show the limitations of purely theoretical and purely experimental analysis due to the range of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hydraulic jump occurs when the supercritical flow occurs in a channel of which normal flow condition is subcritical. h2/h1 = ВЅ (в€ љ(1+8F12 ) 1)(4) The Froude number is calculated using this equation: F1 = в€ љ(q2/gh12)(5) The hydraulic jump, also known as standing wave, is a rapid transition from supercritical flow to subcritical flow. The transition is generally a turbulent process with a significant energy loss(∆E). that can not be neglected. A hydraulic jump is commonly used to dissipate energy, and reduce the downstream velocity. To calculate the specific energy at the two separate heights this equation is used: E = h1 + q2/2gh12(6) The total energy loss can be derived as О”E = E1 E2(7) To find the height of the jump between the smallest and largest heights: О”h = h2 h1(8) Finally, the length of the hydraulic jump is given by:
