Business performance is generally measured by productivity improvements based on making processes more efficient and effective. Without motivated people behind the processes and clear objectives for what those processes should accomplish, many organizations fail to realize the benefits they are striving for. Add to this the trend towards “Big Data” and you have a recipe for what it might be like to order pizza in 2017.

A Leadership Survival Guide to Transformation - Aldo Rall & Andy Cooper - Agi...AgileNZ Conference
Agile has become a source of disruption to organisations and leadership. Prevailing trends shows that organisations are de-layering and some are even decimating their hierarchies. This disruption driven by Agile and, more recently, DevOps and Agile Scaling, challenges tradition; there is a call for wider skill sets and controlled, sustainable transformations, pushing leadership and organisations into wider and often conflicting and ambiguous contexts.
About Aldo Rall & Andy Cooper:
Aldo has over 18 years’ experience in a range of industries including financial services, healthcare, IT, management consulting and education in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK. Aldo remains fascinated with continuous change in industry, which ensures there is always something new to learn, regardless of experience levels or qualifications. Over time, Aldo has honed his skills in the practical elements of developing working software but his greatest passion lies in the people dimension of the people-process-technology mix and how this translates into successful IT strategy, teams, projects and practitioners.

Businesses routinely attempt to accomplish too much and quickly lose focus when the next fire erupts or a new "shiny ornament" appears.
Strategy Deployment (also known as hoshin kanri and policy deployment) is a highly effective means for prioritizing and maintaining focus on the projects and improvement activities that lead to outstanding business performance. But many organizations need to build fundamental skills before they're ready to fully utilize strategy deployment as it was intended.
In this webinar, you'll learn how to build fundamental skills by:
• Prioritizing the laundry list of what you COULD focus on as an organization and create a "must do, can't fail" list of what you WILL focus on.
• Gaining organization-wide alignment, the key to successful plan execution.
• Managing the plan to keep distractions at bay and generate the level of results all organizations are capable of.
In short, you'll learn how to accomplish meaningful improvement in a way that aligns rather than divides, and puts improvement in its rightful place as an integral part of achieving overarching business goals.
We ran a lunchtime session talking about values and how they underpin the way we work.
The session closed out with a whiteboard exercise which is described on the last page of this deck.
If you use this I'd appreciate your sharing your experiences and feedback via the comments or by email.
Thanks!

This is material from a webinar regarding the problem with tools-centric approaches to Lean transformation, and where the opportunities lie for a more successful journey.
Over the past two years we've begun to learn more deeply about what REALLY makes the Toyota Production System tick. We've learned that, while tools are necessary, they are not sufficient for creating a Lean enterprise. Leadership, culture, and problem-solving proficiency are common missing links that slow organizational transformation, creating the need to build new skills.

In the largest quantitative research project of its kind, more than 1500 small and midsized manufacturing CEOs were interviewed (in February 2015) about their greatest barriers, challenges, and fears about growing their companies. The survey was conducted by TR Cutler, Inc., based in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The results of the Manufacturing CEO Survey were surprising. The greatest pain point causing anxiety, fear, and apprehension about manufacturing growth among these manufacturing leaders was speaking to their employees. More than four out of five (82%) said that speaking to their employees was difficult or very difficult.

Jon Terry: Respect for People Lean's Neglected PillaritSMF UK
Respect for People is one of the pillars of Lean. If you read the Lean-Agile and DevOps literature or attend conferences, you will hear plenty about culture. However, these ideas usually aren’t presented as systematically and tangibly as the process tools. Most of the Lean principles that we study are focused on the other pillar, continuous improvement. Cultural ideas may be mixed in there but in a way that’s hard to untangle. Or, at the risk of ruffling some feathers, they may seem overly touchy-feely or theoretical brain science-y. This is a real shame. A business can’t just be a nice place to work, full of nice people; it must deliver a steady stream of results for customers and financial stakeholders. But the best long-term results come from providing a sustainable, healthy work environment. So investing in a strong culture is a wise decision for executives and managers.
Here ITSM17 top-rated speaker Jon Terry explores some key ideas around team structure and the responsibilities of both team members and managers in a respectful Lean-Agile company. The presentation provides candidates with a set of seven principles to spell out respect for people to match those for continuous improvement. And it shares some of the source material from which these ideas are derived.
A Wall Street Journal article postulates that innovation comes from inside a company through networks—not lone individuals. The authors offers strategies to cultivate innovation, such as making efforts to break down the walls between company departments, rapidly testing and refining ideas, and figure out whether there are people in the chain of command who are hard to work with.
But for most large organizations, this “formula” for innovation is difficult to implement. Change, especially innovative change, is often is met with organizational resistance. Conversely, the culture of the organization often expresses collective frustrations with the limitations of business processes and underlying technologies to support business needs.
Doug Jackson, senior director of the Business Analysis Practice for Robbins Gioia (http://www.robbinsgioia.com), and Paula Pierce, CEO and principal transformation strategist, Peridona Strategies LLC (http://www.periodonastrategies.com), conduct an interactive session on integrating business analysis and organizational change management to create an environment for innovation and successful change. They will examine problems that prevent establishing successful innovation networks and provide an approach using best practices from both disciplines to help organizations harvest and test innovative ideas. They will show you how to:
• Identify the root of change resistance in our organizations
• Identify and capitalize on existing networks
• Apply BA and OCM best practices to create an environment for innovation.
Technical skill is important but building great teams requires a lot more than that. This brief breakfast presentation for the Australian Institute of Credit Management shares some of our thoughts and ideas covered in our more extensive workshops
Simply Irresistible: Engaging the 21st Century WorkforceJosh Bersin
Josh Bersin's keynote presentation on the Simply Irresistible Organization, a new and expanded way of thinking about employee engagement and building a people-centric company.
There’s no doubt that organizations are increasingly reliant on external expertise. And that raises big questions for human resources: How clear is our strategy and philosophy of contingent staffing? How involved is HR in managing external expertise on behalf of their organizations, and how involved should it be? How well does our workforce planning incorporate external experts into a total workforce plan? How well do our systems and policies support our ability to attract the best external talent, and their productivity?
In this spotlight webinar, Norm Smallwood and Jon Younger, authors of “Agile Talent: How to Source and Manage Outside Experts” will deliver insight on how talent leaders can successfully manage, mobilize and maximize the contributions of agile talent.
During this Spotlight webinar, attendees will explore:
-The challenge of agile talent.
-What strategic agile talent management looks like.
-How leaders need to change how they think and act to make the most from this agile workforce.
-The role of HR now, and the implications of an HR strategic approach to agile talent.
