1 Explain the Trolley Driver, Bystander at the Switch, Fat Man, Transplant, & Hospital scenarios
discussed in the "The Trolley Problem" reading. In doing so, address what the ethical issue(s) are in
each of these scenarios. The trolley problem can be expanded to discuss a number of related ethical
dilemmas, all referring to the conflicts inherent in utilitarianism and consequentialist ethics. The
problem with the trolley driver scenario is that the driver is faced with a choice of whether to
infringe on the rights of one man (the man on the tracks) or whether to allow the trolley to crash,
thereby killing the five people on board. The driver is stuck between two equally unfortunate
situations, and the issue calls into question whether it is more ethical to save five lives than it is to
refrain from infringing on the life on an innocent man. Inherent to the problem is the fact that it is
impossible to know whether the diversion of the trolley will in fact save the five lives. In the
alternative scenario involving the Bystander at the Switch, the actor in question is not the driver but
a person who has the ability to pull the lever that will divert the trolley towards one workman,
versus the five workmen that will be killed if no action is taken. The dilemma is only slightly
different from the original involving the onus on the driver. Either way points to the fundamental
ethic of killing one to save five, and whether to do so would be the ethical choice. The difference

The site is located at the northwestern side of the intersection between Houghton Street and South
Street. The project site is shown in Figure One, Locus Map: 1 Houghton Street, Hudson MA.
The project site is labelled as Assessors Sheet 29, Lot 218 and is a historic mill complex. Therefore,
certain activities are exempted from requirements stated in 310 CMR 10.58(1) through (5), but Best
Management Practices (BMP) will still be applied.
The site area is currently vacant and is approximately 14,757 SF. The lot is bordered to the west by
the Danforth Brook, with Houghton Street to the east, South Street to the South, and a one story
commercial structure to the north. There is a footbridge southwesterly of the site which connects to a
parking lot. The site is flat with an elevation change of 1 foot from the northern property line to
south street.
The Danforth Brook is a perennial stream, with a running water depth of roughly one foot. The
bottom of the stream is covered with plants and various pieces of rubble. It is confined by stone
walls, both of which are over 100 years old. The riverfront is degraded because, parts of the stone
wall are covered by overgrowth and a tree has grown in the riverbed in an area adjacent to the
footbridge. The wall is in various states of disrepair with pieces of it lying in the riverbed.
Additionally, a small area of Bordering Land Subject to Flooding (BLSF), extends onto the western
portion of the property. Based on the FEMA Flood Insurance Study for Middlesex County from July
6, 2016, the elevation of the floodplain was determined to be at 204.2 feet. The flood zone area is
having been calculated to be approximately 4,588 SF. The actual area of the flood zone could vary
slightly because the site is flat and could have various undulations not considered in the survey.
Description of Existing Conditions
Prior to its demolition in 1999 the building housed a three–story shoe factory. After its demolition it
was used as a drive–through ATM until 2002, when the ATM was removed. Currently the lot is

of art you have to pay attention to every detail in an art work and what color or shapes he or she
used. Of all the art works that I saw in the Museum of Fine Arts, there were three art works which I
preferred out of hundreds of arts works in the museum. The very first art work that I saw at the
museum is one of my favorite ones. The artist that created the art work his name is Frederic
Remington. His art work is an American made in 1861–1909. The painting was made with oil paint
on canvas to make it look shinny. The painting is representational because the three horse raiders
resemble real things from the real world. In this painting Frederic Remington creates tension by
suspending the action at its climax. As the raiders and horses rush headlong into the viewer's space,
the fate of the fallen raider is unclear. While the facial expressions of the raiders appear calm, the
rearing heads and flared nostrils of the horses convey the horror of the scene. His painting catches
your eye right away because of the light colors he uses to distinguish between the sky and the
terrain. The color of the sky looks very realistic because of the combination of colors blue and

Moral Reasoning And Moral Judgments
Over the last decades, research in moral psychology was dominated by the role of reasoning in
making moral judgments (Kohlberg, 1969; Turiel, 1983), while a more recent research emphasizes
the role of automatic emotional processes (Blair, 1995; Haidt, 2001; Pizzaro & Salovey, 2002).
Therefore, there has been a great tension to whether intuitions or reasons play critical role in making
moral judgments. Haidt (2001) argues moral reasoning involves a conscious process, which means
that the process is slower, effortful, deliberate, and controllable, while moral intuition process occurs
unconsciously and thus, the process is faster, automatic and effortlessly. Thereby, Haidt (2001)
contends reasoning still play a role in moral judgments, nevertheless, it is most likely as a post hoc
attempt to justify one's intuition–driven moral judgments. However, there are still some studies
maintaining reasons as the master in making moral judgments (Kohlberg, Levine, & Hewer, 1983;
Kuhn, 1991). Kuhn (1991) describes people still follow their reasoning to make judgments even
though it might contradicts with their initial intuitions. Greene, Sommerville, Nystrom, Darley, and
Cohen (2001) propose dual–process theory in order to consolidate these two approaches. They
explain that both reasons and intuitions run in parallel or mutually competitive roles in making
