1. I will be teaching23 studentsfroma 12th
grade Advance PlacementCivicsclass.Theyare
from17-19 yearsof age and have priorknowledge of UnitedStateshistorybutdonot have
an understandingof the government.There are 13 girlsand10 boys whoare all of the top
intellectual mindsinthe school. These studentslike todolarge amountsof workand are
accustomedto doinglarge amountsof assignments.Theyworkbestwhentheyare working
alone butfeel the needtotalkto otherpeerstoestablishafeelingof accomplishment.
By the endof a week mystudentswill be able tocompare one amendmenttoanyother
amendment,contrastone amendmenttoanyotheramendment,describe the
amendments,identifythe amendments,andapplywhattheylearnedtotheirdailylives.
Theywill accomplishthisbywatchingvideos,workingingroups,presentingtothe class,
doingdebates,listeningtoasong/rap,and keepingareflectionjournal witha95% accuracy
In orderto teachthis lessonIwill give the studentsacopyof the constitutionwhichthey
will be requiredtokeepuntil the endof the yearaswell asa journal.I will thensplitthe
classintogroups. Theywill puta star intheirjournal toindicate thatwas the amendment
theydidtheirpresentationon.Eachgroupwill lookattheiramendment,writedownthe
entire wordingof thatamendment,andthenpresenttothe classwhat theyhave learned.
In theirpresentationtheywill include the actual text,how theyputthatamendmentin
modernterms,andthencreate a picture torepresent thatamendment. Aftertheyhave
completedthistheymuststayintheirgroupsandcome upwitha questiontoaskthe class
on the Facebookpage setup forthisclass. Once theyhave completedthat,one student
mustpost on the page and try to stumpthe othermembersof the class.If theydo,theywill
receive afewbonuspointstotheirpresentation. Thentheycaneithergetintogroupsof
theirchoice or workalone onone of twooptions:make a posteror create a video.Theywill
try to persuade the classto theirside if theyare workingona posteraboutthe one of the
amendmentswe are workingon(18th
- 21st
). If theyare makinga videothe goal isto try to
getthe classto rememberthe amendmentinafunway.
2. I will printoff copiesof the constitutionandhandoutjournalswiththe students
nameson them.Priortothe studentspresentingtothe classIwill lookoverthe
projectsto make sure theyare appropriate andhave the accurate informationIwill
groupthe childrenbasedontheirabilitytoworktogetheraswell asmakingsure
that everyone inthe groupparticipates.The desks willbe setupinsquare groups
and will have the suppliestheyneedontheirdesks.Theywill use mycomputerand
speakersforthe presentation. Iwill letthemuse phonesforrecordingortheycan
use flipcameras.
I will have aquestiononthe boardwhichwill be answeredthrough
Polleverywhere.com.The studentswill tell me whattheyknow aboutthe
amendments,tell me how manytheythinktheycanname,andthentell me if there
isanythingtheyhave questions.AfterIestablishabase of where everyone isonthe
conceptsthenI will divide themintogroups.Iwill walkaroundtomake sure
everyone participates. Everyonewillhave toshow upand talkinthe videoandif
theychoose to workon a postereachpersonmustmake one.
I will evaluate mystudentsbylookingattheirjournalstomake sure they
understandeverythingthattheyare learning,the presentationstothe class,and
the bell ringersthatwill be presentedbefore everyclass.Iwill alsoevaluateby
listeninginthe groupdiscussionsandsee if there isanygroupwhichisstruggling
withtheiramendmentorpresentation.Whenstudentsanswereachother’s
questionsthenIwill know theyare learning. Whenstudentsgetthe appropriate
language inthe posterand make itconvincingIwill know theyunderstand.Inthe
video,Iwill see howwelltheyknow the amendmentsbythe lyricsandthe time
theyput intoit.
