WHAT MAKES A STUDENT AN 
EXCEPTIONAL LEARNER? 
• Students with special needs can vary in a multitude of ways as we all 
know form our familiarity with IDEA. 
• One thing all of these students have in common is an Individualized 
Education Program or IEP. 
• A students IEP can be vital in assisting us, as teachers, in identifying 
how to best focus our resources to better assist students in 
achieving their highest level of independence. 
• In the end it can be confusing as to how best utilize our 
resources while still offerings students a differentiated and 
all encompassing learning experience.
WHAT IS ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY? 
• According to Cennamo, Ross and Ertman assistive 
technology is any item, piece of equipment, or product 
system used to increase, maintain, or improve functional 
capabilities of individuals with learning disabilities. 
• These can range from speech synthesizers and text 
to speech technology down to calculators and timers.
6 STEPS TO FINDING AN AT SOLUTION 
Step 1 
Collect student and family 
information: Look at 
strengths, needs like and 
abilities. 
Step 2 
Discuss a variety of activities 
the child is presented with 
within a day what is 
preventing the child from 
participating more? 
Step 3 
Identify some observable 
behaviors that would be 
indicative of a successful 
intervention.
6 STEPS CONT.… 
Step 4 
Brainstorm some possible 
assistive technology 
interventions. 
Step 5 
Test your ideas. Implement 
and observation plan. 
Step 6 
Identify what worked out 
and what didn’t. Modify 
or change AT choices as 
needed.

  • 1. ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY AND THE STUDENTS WHO NEED IT A look inside the relationship between exceptional learners and technology: Let Technology help you, help your students

WHAT MAKES A STUDENT AN EXCEPTIONAL LEARNER? • Students with special needs can vary in a multitude of ways as we all know form our familiarity with IDEA. • One thing all of these students have in common is an Individualized Education Program or IEP. • A students IEP can be vital in assisting us, as teachers, in identifying how to best focus our resources to better assist students in achieving their highest level of independence. • In the end it can be confusing as to how best utilize our resources while still offerings students a differentiated and all encompassing learning experience.

WHAT IS ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY? • According to Cennamo, Ross and Ertman assistive technology is any item, piece of equipment, or product system used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with learning disabilities. • These can range from speech synthesizers and text to speech technology down to calculators and timers.
  • 4. 6 STEPS TO FINDING AN AT SOLUTION Step 1 Collect student and family information: Look at strengths, needs like and abilities. Step 2 Discuss a variety of activities the child is presented with within a day what is preventing the child from participating more? Step 3 Identify some observable behaviors that would be indicative of a successful intervention.
  • 5. 6 STEPS CONT.… Step 4 Brainstorm some possible assistive technology interventions. Step 5 Test your ideas. Implement and observation plan. Step 6 Identify what worked out and what didn’t. Modify or change AT choices as needed.
