The first part (Part I) of the final project for this course is preparing for the letter of intent.

In this project, you will play the part of a sociologist who has been requested by your national community to craft a letter of intent to the potential funder, the

Ideas and Change: Technology is often a driving force behind social change and has brought significant changes to our society. Think back to twenty years ago—how different was society in terms of technology? How did that impact your everyday life? The final project for this course is the creation of a sociological imagination PowerPoint presentation.

For example, with respect to the problems of homelessness, we see a variety of local and national level organizations that seek to enable people the opportunity to have permanent housing. Habitat for Humanity would be an excellent example of an organization that deals with such a concern. In the same sense, we may look at the Salvation Army as a type of organization committed to helping impoverished people, or people recently released from prison or drug treatment, to find gainful employment and reclaim a quality-of-life. Your job in this paper will be to do your own independent research on two organizations that are committed to the social problem chosen in the first writing assignment. The rise of the reality program over the past decade has more to do with the cheaper cost of this
genre than with the wild popularity of these programs. In fact, the history of television and
viewer numbers, traditional sitcoms and dramas--and even prime-time news programs like 60
Minutes and 20/20--have been far more popular than successful reality programs like American
Idol. But when national broadcast TV executives cut costs by reducing writing and production
staffs and hiring “regular people” instead of trained actors, does the craft of storytelling suffer at

exercise, let’s compare the storytelling competence of a reality program with that of a more

Pick a current reality program and a current sitcom or drama. Choose programs that either started
in the last year or two or have been on television for roughly the same period of time. Now
develop a “viewing sheet” that allows you to take notes as you watch 3 or 4 episodes of the two
programs. Keep track of main characters, plotlines, settlings, conflicts, and resolutions. Also
track the main problems that are posed in the programs and how they are portrayed or worked
out in each episode. Find out and compare the basic production costs of each program.
2. Analysis
Look for patterns and differences in the ways stories are told in the two programs. At a general
level, what are the conflicts about? (For example, are they about men versus women, managers
versus employees, tradition versus change, individuals versus institutions, honesty versus

The final project for this course is the creation of a sociological imagination PowerPoint presentation.

For example, consider the social problem of youth unemployment. It is well-documented that in the last several years of America’s economy, young people have experienced unemployment in greater numbers. A presentation in this course about youth unemployment might be framed initially about how, in an American culture that is so focused on individual responsibility and achievement, an issue such as youth unemployment can be treated as purely an individual problem.

For this next paper, we will expand upon our understanding of the social problem through analyzing the organizations that are committed to addressing it. For example, with respect to the problems of homelessness, we see a variety of local and national level organizations that seek to enable people the opportunity to have permanent housing. Habitat for Humanity would be an excellent example of an organization that deals with such a concern. In the same sense, we may look at the Salvation Army as a type of organization committed to helping impoverished people, or people recently released from prison or drug treatment, to find gainful employment and reclaim a quality-of-life. Your job in this paper will be to do your own independent research on two organizations that are committed to the social problem chosen in the first writing assignment. This will ultimately lead to our final paper in which we’ll examine the future of the social problem.

The rise of the reality program over the past decade has more to do with the cheaper cost of this
genre than with the wild popularity of these programs. In fact, the history of television and
viewer numbers, traditional sitcoms and dramas--and even prime-time news programs like 60
Minutes and 20/20--have been far more popular than successful reality programs like American
Idol. But when national broadcast TV executives cut costs by reducing writing and production
staffs and hiring “regular people” instead of trained actors, does the craft of storytelling suffer at
the expense of commercial savings? Can good stories be told in a reality program? In this
exercise, let’s compare the storytelling competence of a reality program with that of a more
traditional comedy sitcom or drama.

Be sure to address separately each stage of the critical process. The description section can be
partially in list form, but the other sections of the assignment need to be in paragraph form. You
should strive to write a solid paragraph or two for each step of the critical process. These papers
do not need to have a traditional introduction or conclusion. Instead you can number each section

Pick a current reality program and a current sitcom or drama. Choose programs that either started
in the last year or two or have been on television for roughly the same period of time. Now
develop a “viewing sheet” that allows you to take notes as you watch 3 or 4 episodes of the two
programs. Keep track of main characters, plotlines, settlings, conflicts, and resolutions. Also
track the main problems that are posed in the programs and how they are portrayed or worked
out in each episode. Find out and compare the basic production costs of each program.
2. Analysis
Look for patterns and differences in the ways stories are told in the two programs. At a general
level, what are the conflicts about? (For example, are they about men versus women, managers
versus employees, tradition versus change, individuals versus institutions, honesty versus
dishonesty, authenticity versus artificiality?). How complicated or simple are the tensions in the
two programs, and how are problems resolved? Are there some conflicts that you feel should not
be permitted-- like pitting older contestants against younger contestants or white against black?
Are there noticeable differences between “the look” of one program and that of the other?

What do some of the patterns mean? What seems to be the point of each program? What do the
programs say about relationships, values, masculinity or femininity, power, social class, and so

Abstract
Purpose –Although leader humility is generally considered a positive leadership behavior, this study aims to
examine when the positive influences of leader humility are likely weakened.
Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected from a two-wave survey. Ordinary least squares
regression analyses were conducted to test the hypotheses.
Findings – Although leader humility is positively related to perceived leader support, this relationship is
weakened when the environment is uncertain, resulting in comparatively lower follower performance.
Practical implications – Leaders should be aware that environmental constraints may weaken the desired
outcomes of humility and therefore adapt leadership to situational needs.
Originality/value – Contrasting to predominant research on leader humility, this study examines a critical
boundary condition bywhich its positive influences are compromised. In light of the disruption caused by the
ongoing COVID-19, this study suggests that what usually are considered positive characteristics of leader
humility are likely perceived as little leader support when the environment is uncertain. Findings of this
study echo contingency leadership theories, which suggest that effective leadership should be context-
dependent.

In the wake of several corporate scandals, managers and scholars have begun to reflect upon
the dark side of leaders’ grandiose characteristics, such as narcissism, hubris, and sense of
entitlement (Boje et al., 2004; Chang and Diddams, 2009; Li and Tang, 2010; Rosenthal and
Pittinsky, 2006). By contrast, virtues such as humility are important managerial
characteristics (Owens et al., 2013). In light of the appeal for “more humility and less
hubris” (Weick, 2001, p. 93), leader humility has received increased attention across various
organizational settings in recent years (e.g. Ou et al., 2018; Swain and Korenman, 2018; Wang
et al., 2018; Wolfteich et al., 2021).
Leader humility is generally viewed as a positive virtue that leads to desirable outcomes for
followers (Wang et al., 2018), teams (Owens and Hekman, 2016), and organizations (Ou et al.,
2018). However, since organizations are embedded in a dynamic, uncertain, and unpredictable
environment, there is no omnipotent leadership: Leadership is not universal and contextual
influences bound its effectiveness. Similarly, leader humility may have its limits. For instance,
Pfeffer (2015) argued that humility might be an overrated leader characterist.

- 1. assignment one Due Thursday In our discussion last week, we considered the many societal groups we belong to and how those groups and others, at both the micro- and macro-level, contribute to a complex society. Not all groups are perceived or treated equally in our society. Like other social issues, inequality can be explored with sociological theory. As you prepare for this discussion, have in mind a social situation in the U.S. where inequality plays a role. Put on your ‘sociologist hat’ and consider the sociological theories we talked about last week as you approach these questions. Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: Summarize the situation where inequality appears. Do you consider this a micro- or macro-level social issue? Which institutions or groups are negatively affected by the inequality? Which social institutions or groups are involved in creating or promoting this inequality? Provide some examples. What sociological theory or theories might be used to help generate solutions to this inequality? assignment two
- 2. Assignment Content Your experience with inequality has formed part of your personal identity. If we want to develop impartial perspectives about inequality and other social problems, we can review information gathered by groups who try to be objective. As we expand our understanding beyond our personal experiences, we can better communicate with others to either broaden their awareness of a social problem or persuade them to consider the limitations of their own perspectives. Considering different perspectives encourages us to reexamine our own opinions when we work with others to address social problems. This week’s assignment provides a scenario in which you will consider inequality from different sociological perspectives. You’ll be asked to use the sociological theories you have learned about as you address this scenario. Scenario: You belong to a community task force that volunteers to improve social problems. The city council has asked your team to provide a report on social problems at a micro-level (your neighborhood or community) rather than a macro-level (state or country).
- 3. The task force has nominated you to put together an Inequalities Report on their behalf to help inform the city’s decisions about solving these problems. For this report, you will select 2 types of inequality that exist in your community and discuss how they affect your community at a micro-level. You will also identify sociological theories that city leaders can consider as they plan for solutions. Download and complete the Inequalities Report on behalf of your fictional task force.
