We have learned how a society's culture can influence people. There are other elements in society, however, that also affect our decisions and behavior. Sociological research has found that in addition to culture, social structure and groups also significantly impact many of our individual choices. Our position in the social structure affects our behaviors, attitudes, and ideas. For example, an important element of social structure are groups. We belong to a variety of different groups. Decades of research have documented the impact of group conformity on the individual. Although people tend to often believe that they act as individuals and aren't impacted by others, research has found this is usually not the case. 1. Chapter one of Julian McDougall’s “Media Studies: The Basics” gives me an understanding of what media is and the history behind it, as well as the reasons why it is being studied in schools today. There are two points from the chapter that McDougall writes that stand out to me. The first one is when he gives reasons as to why one should study media. McDougall (2012) writes for his third reason, “...the idea that Media Studies might want to ‘change the world’” and later writes, “... then, studying media critically ought to be considered a serious and important project for any mature democracy” (p. 8). The explanation he gives for this being a reason to study media is something I completely agree with. Media has a great impact on what a person chooses to believe in and shapes the way they view others. Studying media and the way it works allows a person to become more literate when it comes to media, which in turn allows them to become aware of what the media is portraying and acknowledge any negative underlying messages that may be present that those who are unaware of how the media works, may miss. The second point that stands out is when he writes, “Theories of creativity are becoming more important to students of media as more and more ordinary people start to make their own media” (McDougall, 2012, p. 32). YouTube comes to mind when I think about people who make their own media. YouTube is a powerful platform where “ordinary” people have their own channels and create their own videos on whatever subject they are interested in like beauty, music, film etc. They give their own ideas and opinions on any subject they want to talk about or represent while giving their audience the choice of agreeing or disagreeing with what they have just watched. McDougall asks, “If we produce our own versions of media texts but stay faithful to the conventions of ‘real media,’ is this creative or just imitation? Or is all imitation an act of parody which is always creative, a reworking of a template and its meanings?” (p. 24). I believe media such as YouTube to be an imitation of ‘real media” since users produce their own versions of media texts and shape them into fitting what they want their message to be and like McDougall writes, this imitation is a “form of parody which is always creative” (p. 24).

The purpose of the Final Paper is to give you an opportunity to apply much of what you have learned about American national government to an examination of civil liberties in the context of the war on terror. Soon after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, the Bush administration developed a plan for holding and interrogating captured prisoners. They were sent to a prison inside a U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, on land leased from the government of Cuba. Since 2002, over 700 men have been detained at Gitmo. Most have been released without charges or turned over to other governments. In 2011, Congress specifically prohibited the expenditure of funds to transfer Gitmo prisoners to detention facilities in the continental United States, making it virtually impossible to try them in civilian courts. As of April 2012, 169 remained in detention at Gitmo (Sutton, 2012).
An assumption made by the Bush administration in selecting this location was that it was beyond the jurisdiction of U.S. courts. The administration wanted to avoid any judicial oversight of how it handled detainees, characterized as enemy combatants. A possible legal challenge to indefinite detention with no formal charges or judicial proceedings might arise from the habeas corpus provision of the Constitution.
Article I, Section 9 of the Constitution states, "The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it." Civil Liberties, Habeas Corpus, and the War on Terror
The final assignment for this course is a Final Paper. The purpose of the Final Paper is to give you an opportunity to apply much of what you have learned about American national government to an examination of civil liberties in the context of the war on terror. The Final Paper represents 20% of the overall course grade.
Soon after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, the Bush administration developed a plan for holding and interrogating captured prisoners. They were sent to a prison inside a U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, on land leased from the government of Cuba. Since 2002, over 700 men have been detained at Gitmo. Most have been released without charges or turned over to other governments. In 2011, Congress specifically prohibited the expenditure of funds to transfer Gitmo prisoners to detention facilities in the continental United States, making it virtually impossible to try them in civilian courts. As of April 2012, 169 remained in detention at Gitmo (Sutton, 2012).
An assumption made by the Bush administration in selecting this location was that it was beyond the jurisdiction of U.S. courts. The administration wanted to avoid any judicial oversight of how it handled detainees, characterized as enemy combatants. A possible legal challenge to indefinite detention with no formal charges or judicial proceedings might arise from the habeas corpus provision of the Constitution.
Article I, Section 9 of the Constitution states, "The Privilege of the Writ of Habeas Corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it." Under this provision, persons detained by the government are entitled to a judicial hearing to determine if there is any legal basis for their detention. Some legal commentators refer to the right of habeas corpus as the "great writ of liberty" because it is a prisoner's ultimate recourse to an impartial judge who can review the possibility that he is being held illegally by the executive (e.g., the police o.

Introduction
After the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989, Afghanistan become a paradise for the Taliban regime, which was able to extend its influence within the country after coming to power. During this period, the Taliban regime adopted in its authority the fundamentalist version of Islam and enabled the creation of AL-Qaeda camps where training fighters from inside and outside the country was taking place. From Afghanistan, AL-Qaeda had been able to find the safe place for planning an attack on the United State, which was considered to be the first enemy for Bin-laden who was the leader of Al-Qaeda. Bin Laden actually was able to take the opportunity and attacked the United States by the bombing of the twin towers of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. In response to 9/11, the US launched Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in October 2001 right after the attack. in The goal of that operation was to derive the Taliban from power and to destroy AL-Qaeda infrastructure and operations in Afghanistan. In the war on Afghanistan, the United State was able to persuade its allies in NATO to participate in military operations. From that standing point,
on September 12, the secretary general of NATO, Lord Robertson,
announced that the Alliance had invoked Article 5 of the Atlantic Charter for the first
time: “An attack on one is an attack on all, Robertson declared” ( Kirkey & Ostroy, 2010, p. 202)

harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied

Social Stratification refers to a society's categorization of its
people into rankings of socioeconomic tiers based on factors
like wealth, income, race, education, and power (OpenStax,
2017).
The
functionalist
perspective examines how society's parts operate stating that
different aspects of society exist because they serve a needed
purpose, while the
conflict theorists
are deeply critical of social stratification, asserting that it only
benefits some people, not all of society.
The daily interactions of individuals in regards to social
stratification is one where systems have been formed to
basically keep individuals closely associated with the factors
that involves social stratification such as,
power
(where all the power players intertwine with power players
only,
wealth
(where the wealthy are only interested in collaborating with
other rich individuals),
gender
(where women are paid considerably lesser salaries than men
even though both are doing the same job), and
education
(where teachers are paid lower salaries even though they have
one of the most important job to mankind).
The systems of class are intriguing because they are based
4. solely on an individual's economic position in a society, and on
birth and individual achievement. My daily routines are surely
influenced in the area of being the best that I can be and
knowing what factors are involved in achieving such greatness
pushes myself harder and harder to appease MY appetite and not
trying to be like other classes of individuals instead establishing
my own trailblazing path. That's a huge no-no concerning most
individuals in society, trying to be like other individuals and
not being the best that they can be. Society cares nothing about
anyone so why sweat trying to impress others when in turn an
individual can truly impress oneself.

Good evening Professor and Class:
The two theories of global inequality addressed in the reading
this week include the modernization theory, and the dependency
theory. Sociologists use these two theoretical approaches to
view the issues and conflicts of social inequality.
The modernization theory
is a theory that focuses on countries of lower income levels
that are affected by the absence of industrialization. This theory
5. focuses specifically on improving their economy by altering
their work attitudes, and cultural values. The low-income
countries have the potential for economic success with the use
of technology and industrialization to improve their economy by
using their resources.
The dependency theory
is focused on a cycle of dependency, following the
modernization theory. Theorists believe that the cycle of
dependence in global inequality is caused by core higher class
nations manipulating the middle and lower-class nations. The
lower-class nations are essentially dependent on the higher-
class nations, which makes the lower-class nations relying
heavily on the higher-class nations for economic success.
Both the modernization theory and the dependency theory have
both strengths and weaknesses. Some strengths of both
perspectives as analytical tools are that both theories can
determine each country by its economic needs and demands.
This makes it easier to decide which countries to do business
with and partner with to be successful. It also helps identify
which countries need help to provide economic assistance.
Some weaknesses of both perspectives as analytical tools are
that these theories give the higher-class countries power.
Unfortunately, this can cause a major disadvantage to the
middle and lower-class countries as power can be abused and
misused. If power is misused, or not used appropriately the
lower-class countries can struggle without assistance or help to
become economically stable.
In addition to these two theories, there are three perspectives
that also contribute to the issue of global inequality,
functionalist perspective, conflict theory, and symbolic
interaction. The functionalist perspective believed that society
is a whole and with the issue global inequality they direct on
the social purposes within their views. The conflict theory
6. focuses directly on the formation and continued forms of
inequality. Finally, while using the symbolic interaction
perspective, theorists focus on the daily impact of global
inequality, the issue of poverty and global stratification. Global
stratification is the specific arrangement of individuals and their
groups within their societies around the world. For example,
global stratification associates the status, wealth, economic
status and power with countries around the world.
I believe that the most accurate theory to address global
inequality is the dependency theory. The dependency theory was
based off the modernization theory, and I believe that this
theory identifies that lower-class nations are economically
unstable because of their lack of social, economic and cultural
values.
