Sociological research has found that in addition to culture, social structure and groups also significantly impact many of our individual choices. Our position in the social structure affects our behaviors, attitudes, and ideas. For example, an important element of social structure are groups. We belong to a variety of different groups. Decades of research have documented the impact of group conformity on the individual. Although people tend to often believe that they act as individuals and aren't impacted by others, research has found this is usually not the case. The Milgram experiment in your Resources is a great example. Milgram (1963) examined conformity and obedience and found that people are highly influenced by authority and the demands of conformity, even to the point that we will inflict pain on another person to obey authority.

What was your experience of completing the implicit bias test? Which test did you choose,
and why?
Reflecting on the self-awareness test was interesting. It allowed me to think deeply to give a clear
and precise answer. The questions were occasionally considered but never asked how I might I feel
about a particular topic. I took the ADDRESSING-GSA- Self-Assessment test to recognize the
cultural characteristics of individuals. As social workers, it is essential to adapt and understand
people from all different cultural backgrounds. The result from the test shows what areas I was
more dominant in and what areas I was less dominant in. The results were not surprising to me,
and they gave me a better perspective of what areas I will need to learn and understand better.
Social workers need to be culturally competent, be self-aware of areas that exhibit bias, and be
willing to work on those areas.
What self-awareness themes have emerged so far in Week 1’s Discussion and this week’s
activities?
The self-awareness themes that have emerged from the discussions are reflecting on oneself and
digging deep to know yourself. As well as how do I perceive myself culturally and the dimension
of diversity? Reading through the learning recourses from the course in both weeks were a great
learning experience for me in addressing cultural, diversity and that is expected, especially since
this is the class that it is being taught. Learning the dynamics of culture and diversity will be a
great asset as the social work profession will be working with individuals of all backgrounds.
Identify a population that you are not comfortable with or would like to know more about;
this could be a population represented by the implicit bias test you took, but it does not have
to be.
I would say that I am comfortable with all types of populations. I work amongst a vastly diverse
group of people that I call my second family from home. The people that I would like to learn

and they gave me a better perspective of what areas I will need to learn and understand better.
Social workers need to be culturally competent, be self-aware of areas that exhibit bias, and be
willing to work on those areas.
What self-awareness themes have emerged so far in Week 1’s Discussion and this week’s
activities?
The self-awareness themes that have emerged from the discussions are reflecting on oneself and
digging deep to know yourself. As well as how do I perceive myself culturally and the dimension
of diversity? Reading through the learning recourses from the course in both weeks were a great
learning experience for me in addressing cultural, diversity and that is expected, especially since
this is the class that it is being taught. Learning the dynamics of culture and diversity will be a
great asset as the social work profession will be working with individuals of all backgrounds.
Identify a population that you are not comfortable with or would like to know more about;
this could be a population represented by the implicit bias test you took, but it does not have
to be.
I would say that I am comfortable with all types of populations. I work amongst a vastly diverse
group of people that I call my second family from home. The people that I would like to learn

We have learned how a society's culture can influence people. There are other elements in society, however, that also affect our decisions and behavior. Sociological research has found that in addition to culture, social structure and groups also significantly impact many of our individual choices. Our position in the social structure affects our behaviors, attitudes, and ideas. For example, an important element of social structure are groups. We belong to a variety of different groups. Decades of research have documented the impact of group conformity on the individual. Although people tend to often believe that they act as individuals and aren't impacted by others, research has found this is usually not the case. The Milgram experiment in your Resources is a great example. Milgram (1963) examined conformity and obedience and found that people are highly influenced by authority and the demands of conformity, even to the point that we will inflict pain on another person to obey authority.
Sociologists also study education and how it is impacted by a society's culture and structure. The purpose of education is to provide knowledge (facts, skills, cultural norms) to members of a society. In the United States, education teaches us not just skills, but also how to be effective citizens. Education transmits the dominant culture, ensuring that children understand cultural norms and values. Educational attainment impacts life outcomes—it affects our occupation, earnings, work conditions, and health. Thus, education is related to social inequality. Welcome to Week Two!
This week we will evaluate some of the cultural, racial, and ethnic identity development theories—beginning with a historical look back at some of the early theories before moving forward in time to review some of the contemporary models. We will also evaluate how individual development in its complexity impacts interactions with others both similar and different from one’s self.
In Chapter 4, you will likely find it helpful to focus your reading on the identity models that allow you to examine them in relation to your own self-identity. This information will be utilized as you share your insights in this week’s written assignment and discussions. Refer to Table 4.1 Stage of Various Cultural Identity Models (p.71) for a helpful conceptual overview of the cultural models being presented throughout the chapter. What does individualism mean in American culture, how it relates to concepts and values such as freedom, democracy, civic responsibility, community involvement. 3. Equality and inequality. This includes the tensions between our cultural ideals and values of equality and the reality of inequality in America—poverty, racism, the heritage of slavery and relations to Native Americans, etc. You should be able to explain how/why social categories such as race, social class, and even gender, as socially constructed, not biological or inherent--how racial and class categories are socially constructed and negotiated and “man-made,” rather than biologically inherent and “God-given.” Basically: our physical and genetic traits are inherent and given, but how we and others choose to perceive, emphasize, or ignore various physical and genetic traits, how we place people into arbitrary categories based on these traits, and how we set one category as “higher” or better than another are all socially constructed and learned. We can look at inequality as giving different groups of people different access to wealth, power, and prestige, and how the same social categories that define our identity (race, ethnicity, gender, etc.) also place us somewhere in a social hierarchy. We can always “negotiate” and try to change this. How can inequality be seen on the level of individuals and images (personal attitudes of prejudice, etc.), institutions discrimination, (policies and practices of institutions that perpetuate racism or inequality), and ideology (systems of attitudes, beliefs, ideas, and symbols that rationalize and support or challenge the “rightness” of a situation of inequality).We can change individuals on the level interpersonal relationships, but if we do not change institutional policies and practices and develop an alternative ideology, we won’t change inequality. Welcome to Week Two!
This week we will evaluate some of the cultural, racial, and ethnic identity development theories—beginning with a historical look back at some of the early theories before moving forward in time to review some of the contemporary models. We will also evaluate how individual development in its complexity impacts interactions with others both similar and different from one’s self.
In Chapter 4, you will likely find it helpful to focus your reading on the identity models that allow you to examine them in relation to your own self-identity. This information will be utilized as you share your insights in this week’s written assignment and discussions. Refer to Table 4.1 Stage of Various Cultural Identity Models (p.71) for a helpful conceptual overview of the cultural models being presented throughout the chapter. Another tip: Narrative 3.1: The Story of Timothy (p.91-2) is a great example for your assignment due this week.

What does individualism mean in American culture, how it relates to concepts and values such as freedom, democracy, civic responsibility, community involvement. How do Americans connect their own fulfillment to that of other people, despite (or because of) individualism?
2. America as a land apart. This examines how Americans have always thought of America as somehow different, special, set apart from other people, cultures, or countries. It applies to questions like whether America is seen as a haven for the world’s oppressed, as a power in the world, etc. It refers to how many generations of immigrants have seen America and why they came here. It also refers to several opposing or conflicting attitudes and values, such as isolationism (America should not get involved with the rest of the world), nativism (foreign immigrants are the problem), extreme patriotism? What are the positive and negative sides to American exceptionalism?
3. Equality and inequality. This includes the tensions between our cultural ideals and values of equality and the reality of inequality in America—poverty, racism, the heritage of slavery and relations to Native Americans, etc. You should be able to explain how/why social categories such as race, social class, and even gender, as socially constructed, not biological or inherent--how racial and class categories are socially constructed and negotiated and “man-made,” rather than biologically inherent and “God-given.” Basically: our physical and genetic traits are inherent and given, but how we and others choose to perceive, emphasize, or ignore various physical and genetic traits, how we place people into arbitrary categories based on these traits, and how we set one category as “higher” or better than another are all socially constructed and learned. We can look at inequality as giving different groups of people different access to wealth, power, and prestige, and how the same social categories that define our identity (race, ethnicity, gender, etc.) also place us somewhere in a social hierarchy. We can always “negotiate” and try to change this. How can inequality be seen on the level of individuals and images (personal attitudes of prejudice, etc.), institutions discrimination, (policies and practices of institutions that perpetuate racism or inequality), and ideology (systems of attitudes, beliefs, ideas, and symbols that rationalize and support or challenge the “rightness” of a situation of inequality).We can change individuals on the level interpersonal relationships, but if we do not change institutional policies and practices and develop an alternative ideology, we won’t change inequality. The term diversity has about as many definitions as there are people that use the term. For the purpose of
this course, we will use the textbook’s definition. Diversity is defined as actual or perceived differences among
people in areas including race, ethnicity, sex, age, and other identity-based characteristics that impact their
relationships and interactions (Bell, 2017). The term is often used to describe our differences rather than how
we are similar. How, then, are diversity and discrimination so often used in the same sentence? Organizations

At 2:49 PM on April 15, 2013 two bombs exploded near the finish line of the annual Boston Marathon killing three people and injuring 264. The first reports about the about the terrorist attack were spread through Twitter and Facebook.
At 2:59 PM the

According to Topsy, a Twitter analytics company, at around 4:10 p.m. there were more than 300,000 mentions on Twitter of “Boston explosions.” (Stern, 2013) In a second wave of social media, details about the event spread. Media that included photos of blood covering the ground and a six-second Vine video of the actual explosion was circulated, deepening people’s sense of what had happened. Around 4:30 p.m., there were more than 700,000 mentions on Twitter of the “Boston Marathon.” (Stern, 2013)
Even though television was the most widely-used source of information about the bombing and its aftermath, it was social media that shaped the story and the response. While 80% of Americans followed the story on TV according to the Pew Research Center, about half (49%) say they kept up with news and information online or on a mobile device and a quarter of Americans got information about the explosions and the hunt for the bombers on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
Young Americans in particular kept up-to-date through social media. Slightly more than half (56%) of an 18-to-29 year subgroup polled by Pew got bombing-related news through social networking sites. (Pew Research Center, 2013).
The Boston bombings and the manhunt that followed became the backdrop for the world to witness the transformation – for good and for bad — in news gathering and distribution, and in disaster management and crises communications caused by social media platforms and technology. The Boston Marathon bombings were a watershed, a moment that marked forever the changed role of social media and the fully participatory public in breaking news events and coverage. The

Restorative Sentencing: Exploring the Views
of the Public

Within the past decade, restorative justice has emerged as a truly global phe-
nomenon. Although retributive justice has dominated the penal landscape, more
recently, restorative principles at sentencing have attracted increased attention.
Restorative sentencing emphasizes the importance of compensation and recon-
ciliation between victims and offenders and pays less attention to establishing
proportionality between the seriousness of the offense and the severity of the sen-
tence imposed. Although voluminous (and proliferating), the scholarly literature
on restorative justice has to date neglected one critical issue: public opinion with
respect to this justice paradigm. Public opinion researchers too, have generally
overlooked this topic. The goal of this paper is to determine which elements
of the new paradigm generate public approval, and which features are likely
to encounter or provoke public opposition, drawing upon related international
research published in English over the past 20 years (1982–2002). The review
reveals widespread support for “restorative” sentencing options, such as commu-
nity service, compensation, and restitution, particularly when applied to young
offenders. However, it also seems clear that public support for these alternatives
to punitive sentencing options declines as the seriousness of the offence increases,
suggesting strong public adherence to the retributive principle of proportionality
in sentencing.

justice” or “restorative sentencing” is not easy, as the initiatives encompassed by
these terms vary widely across jurisdictions. Nevertheless, some defining char-
acteristics are clear. In contrast to retributive justice, restorative justice stresses
reconciliation between the offender, the victim, and the community to which both

The world's peoples face daunting challenges in the
twenty-first century. While apologists herald the globaliza-
tion of capitalism, many people on our planet experience
recurring economic exploitation, immiseration, and envi-
ronmental crises linked to capitalism's spread. Across the
globe social movements continue to raise the issues of
social justice and democracy. Given the new century's
serious challenges, sociologists need to rediscover their
roots in a sociology committed to social justice, to cultivate and extend the long-
standing "countersystem" approach to research, to encourage greater self-reflection
in sociological analysis, and to re-emphasize the importance ofthe teaching of soci-
ology. Finally, more sociologists should examine the big social questions of this
century, including the issues of economic exploitation, social oppression, and the
looming environmental crises. And, clearly, more sociologists should engage in the
study of alternative social futures, including those of more just and egalitarian soci-
eties. Sociologists need to think deeply and imaginatively about sustainable social
futures and to aid in building better human societies.
WE STAND today at the beginning ofa challenging new century. Like
ASA Presidents before me, I am conscious
of the honor and the responsibility that this

obligation to speak about the role of sociol-

Healing is the body’s response to injury in an attempt to restore normal structure and functions.

There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.
