Things I liked: I think by creating sections for the paper allowed it to flow better. It allowed the reading to know exactly what they are going to be reading. Since you broke the paper into sections maybe add exactly what ethnic groups you will be discussing in the paper so it gives the reader more of a sense of what groups you will be talking about further along. Tell us who the discriminators are and who the discriminated are.
Constructive Criticism: Be careful to simple typos. There were some small mechanical errors throughout the paper that needs to be fixed. Make sure not to repeat the same descriptive words in the same sentence. I’ve noticed throughout the paper “it should be noted” has been used a lot. Also, make sure the transition between sections flow well. Even though sections are broken into different parts, it still needs to be one concise paper. By aware of run on sentences as well. I saw a couple throughout the paper.
Grade: 80/100 – I found that there were multiple mechanical errors throughout the paper. The paper was clear, however I think if you were to talk about a specific group of people it would strengthen the paper. As of right now, the paper of too broad. Make it more specific and you will be good to go. Also, try not to use the exact same wording Dr. Peterson used for your section titles.

Defining your racial and ethnic identities has to do with how you classify race and identity and how others categorize them as well. Race refers to the conception that people can be categorized into groups based on skin color, hair texture, and facial features. Japanese is an example of a racial group. Ethnicity refers to a group of people who share a sense of connectedness based on national origin, language, or religion. Irish-Catholic is an example of an ethnic group. The term
culture
also appears in discussions about race and ethnicity. Culture refers to shared attitudes and behaviors, such as customs. People of the same race and ethnicity often share culture as well, and you may notice some overlap between culture, race, and ethnicity.
There are different approaches used to define racial and ethnic identities. Your text emphasizes an approach called
constructionism
. Constructionists argue that definitions of race and ethnicity cannot be separated from social processes, such as political, legal, economic, and other outside influences. They believe that these outside influences "construct" definitions of race and ethnicity, and definitions change as social processes change. For example, black children in the 1950s may have felt they were not as valued, not as competent, and not as "good" as white children because social processes at the time supported these ideas. After a preliminary examination, the juvenile suspect explained that the victim purchased the marijuana and the alcohol earlier that same day. The juvenile explained that the victim had invited him to her house because they had "been liking each other" for a long time. Further, the juvenile explained that the alcohol and drugs were in the home when he arrived. He said that he and the victim began by smoking marijuana and drinking beer before they began kissing and fondling one another. Next, according to the juvenile suspect, they started to have what he described as consensual sex. After a short while, they were interrupted by the victim's brother, who had come home from work. The victim’s brother then called the police to report the incident.
The juvenile had prior detentions for violation of curfew, truancy, and attempted sexual battery. No further explanations are given. However, differences in race, ethnicity, class, gender, and religion can add to the complexity and further intensify even the most basic misunderstanding. In order for you to more fully comprehend this phenomenon, your first assignment (and the first of three for your course project) will begin in the context of the work place.
By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assignment criteria:

Part 1
Describe a fictional or real-life, work related conflict that has arisen from, and is complicated by, cultural differences. This scenario will serve as the basis for your course project.
Write a two-page narrative detailing pertinent information about your scenario including:
A clear statement of the conflict and project research question.
A description of the essential elements of the conflict, including any relevant details leading up to the conflict.
A discussion of the cultural competencies of the participants.
A rationale for the relevance or importance of this scenario to foster the understanding of diversity issues.

It is also important for you to be aware of your own cultural competencies or how well you are able to act with people from other cultures. At the end of this course, you will be asked to assess how participating in this course has contributed to your personal and professional growth. In order to do that, it is helpful to have a starting point for your reflection. Refer to the Sperry (2012) article on cultural competencies from this unit's readings.

Summary:How racial discrimination has an affect in a community. Racially charged actions can affect education, opportunities, and others political affiliations. Profiling and prejudices can stem from stereotypes and the majority group creating a hierarchy.
Things I liked: I think by creating sections for the paper allowed it to flow better. It allowed the reading to know exactly what they are going to be reading. Since you broke the paper into sections maybe add exactly what ethnic groups you will be discussing in the paper so it gives the reader more of a sense of what groups you will be talking about further along. Tell us who the discriminators are and who the discriminated are.
Constructive Criticism: Be careful to simple typos. There were some small mechanical errors throughout the paper that needs to be fixed. Make sure not to repeat the same descriptive words in the same sentence. I’ve noticed throughout the paper “it should be noted” has been used a lot. Also, make sure the transition between sections flow well. Even though sections are broken into different parts, it still needs to be one concise paper. By aware of run on sentences as well. I saw a couple throughout the paper.
Grade: 80/100 – I found that there were multiple mechanical errors throughout the paper. Race refers to the conception that people can be categorized into groups based on skin color, hair texture, and facial features. Japanese is an example of a racial group. Ethnicity refers to a group of people who share a sense of connectedness based on national origin, language, or religion. Irish-Catholic is an example of an ethnic group. The term
culture

There are different approaches used to define racial and ethnic identities. Your text emphasizes an approach called
constructionism
. Constructionists argue that definitions of race and ethnicity cannot be separated from social processes, such as political, legal, economic, and other outside influences. They believe that these outside influences "construct" definitions of race and ethnicity, and definitions change as social processes change. For example, black children in the 1950s may have felt they were not as valued, not as competent, and not as "good" as white children because social processes at the time supported these ideas. Political and economic influences favored white children over black children. Social processes in the current era reject favoring white children over black children. Abstract
In 1979, Tony McMichael co-authored a paper showing how occupational stress
not only affected mental health; it also exacerbated the effect of chemical and
physical hazards on respiratory and skin symptoms. This study was among
the first to place occupational stress within the same framework as chemical
and physical hazards. It also showed that stress and mental health faced
complex assessment challenges, but that these were similar to those faced by
the assessment of exposure to chemical and physical hazards, especially in
large-scale epidemiological studies.
More recently, occupational stress has been termed a ‘psychosocial hazard’ by
some jurisdictions in an attempt to place it into the existing occupational risk
management and risk assessment framework. However, progress has been slow
and regulation of occupational stress remains outside standard occupational
health and safety .

c. Pick three of these parts to reflect on (3 out of the 4 mentioned above)

a. Choose a lab that is associated with the part(s) of the course you chose
b. Choose a concept/learning objective in one lab from each of the three ‘parts’ above.
1. For example: From lab #5 one of the learning objectives might have been ‘Identify and distinguish between different types of data’ This is a concept you should explore in more detail for this assignment.
c. Define the learning objective/concept in your own words. Please draw on course materials such as lectures and labs for the explanation of the concept.
d. Explain how you used/accomplished this concept/learning objective in a lab you completed this semester. For example, if you were selecting Projections and Coordinate Systems (For Example: Learning objective: Assign projections to different geographic areas based on location and geographic extent) you can explain what projections are (in your own words/as used in the course) and then discuss how you assigned them to different locations. Please be specific about what lab(s) you are referring to and what questions in the labs demonstrate the concept you chose.
e. Explain what successes or difficulties you had dealing with this learning/ objective/concept.
f. Finally do some independent research. Investigate how this concept has been employed to understand or solve real life problems. For the example of projections you might cite how a poor understanding of projections caused experts to totally misinterpret a misslie threat from North Korea. Feel free to use this example if your paper.
g. You will complete this flow 3 times – once for each section of the class you choose. Each reflection should be about 3 pages – so you should 3-4 pages total.
4. To finish write a short conclusion that reflects on your entire experience in the class. Where did you succeeded? Where did you struggle? Is there something in the course you will take with you once our.
