Gender stereotyping reflects the perceived psychological traits and characteristics of males and females, and the related roles that are thought to be appropriate for each gender in family, work, school, and society as a whole. Things I liked: I think by creating sections for the paper allowed it to flow better. It allowed the reading to know exactly what they are going to be reading. Since you broke the paper into sections maybe add exactly what ethnic groups you will be discussing in the paper so it gives the reader more of a sense of what groups you will be talking about further along. Tell us who the discriminators are and who the discriminated are.
Constructive Criticism: Be careful to simple typos. There were some small mechanical errors throughout the paper that needs to be fixed. Make sure not to repeat the same descriptive words in the same sentence. I’ve noticed throughout the paper “it should be noted” has been used a lot. Also, make sure the transition between sections flow well. Even though sections are broken into different parts, it still needs to be one concise paper. By aware of run on sentences as well. I saw a couple throughout the paper.
Grade: 80/100 – I found that there were multiple mechanical errors throughout the paper. The paper was clear, however I think if you were to talk about a specific group of people it would strengthen the paper. As of right now, the paper of too broad. Make it more specific and you will be good to go. Also, try not to use the exact same wording Dr. Peterson used for your section titles.

It is evident by studying history that gender stereotypes have changed over time. One obvious example is in the history of women's suffrage. In 1972, psychologist George Weinberg’s book, Society and the Healthy Homosexual ,
introduced readers to a new term, homophobia , and to the then-novel idea that
hostility to homosexuality, rather than homosexuality itself, posed a threat to
mental health (Weinberg, 1972 ; see also Herek, 2004) . The following year, the
American Psychiatric Association’s Board of Directors declared that homosexuality
is not inherently associated with mental illness and voted to remove it from the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , or DSM (Bayer, 1987 ;
Minton, 2002) . The American Psychological Association quickly endorsed the
psychiatrists’ action and further urged mental health professionals “to take the lead
in removing the stigma of mental illness that has long been associated with
homosexual orientations” (Conger, 1975 , p. 633). Thus, a major cultural institution
renounced its longstanding role in legitimating society’s stigmatization of homo-
sexuality just when the psychological manifestations of such stigma were beginning
to be redefined as a social problem. This historic confluence of events provides an
appropriate starting point for the present chapter.
The term homophobia has gained widespread usage since 1972, even as its limita-
tions have become increasingly apparent. Chief among these is its construction of
prejudice as an individual pathology. As I have explained elsewhere (Herek, 2004) ,
this clinically derived perspective limits our ability to understand hostility toward
sexual minorities, both among individuals and in society at large. I have argued instead
for the value of framing heterosexuals’ negative responses to sexual minorities in terms
of sexual prejudice and of conceptualizing sexual prejudice as the internalization of
societal stigma (Herek, 2000a, 2004, 2007 ; Herek, Chopp, & Strohl, 2007) .
In the present chapter, I elaborate on these points and provide a more detailed
framework than I have previously presented for conceptualizing both societal and
individual reactions to homosexuality and sexual minorities in the United States. 1
A central aim of this discussion is to integrate insights relevant to sexual orientation
from the sociological literature on stigma with findings from psychological research

How are different social groups portrayed in the mass media in contemporary society? How far have we come in terms of reducing or eliminating stereotypical images and portrayals of minority groups? To answer these questions, we need to place them in the context of the economic, technological, and social changes that have shaped postindustrial U.S. society and affected relationships between diverse groups in our society. For example, watching TV sitcoms and dramas today we see not only much greater diversity in cast members but also minority group members playing leading roles, something that was much less common just a few decades ago.
As you analyze how the various media forms portray cultural diversity, another thing to consider is the role of people with power in the media industry—those who make the decisions about what stories and images appear on a TV news program or magazine or newspaper article and how those programs or stories will be framed.
As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. In 1972, psychologist George Weinberg’s book, Society and the Healthy Homosexual ,
introduced readers to a new term, homophobia , and to the then-novel idea that
hostility to homosexuality, rather than homosexuality itself, posed a threat to
mental health (Weinberg, 1972 ; see also Herek, 2004) . The following year, the
American Psychiatric Association’s Board of Directors declared that homosexuality
is not inherently associated with mental illness and voted to remove it from the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , or DSM (Bayer, 1987 ;
Minton, 2002) . The American Psychological Association quickly endorsed the
psychiatrists’ action and further urged mental health professionals “to take the lead
in removing the stigma of mental illness that has long been associated with
homosexual orientations” (Conger, 1975 , p. 633). Thus, a major cultural institution
renounced its longstanding role in legitimating society’s stigmatization of homo-
sexuality just when the psychological manifestations of such stigma were beginning
to be redefined as a social problem. This historic confluence of events provides an
appropriate starting point for the present chapter.
The term homophobia has gained widespread usage since 1972, even as its limita-
tions have become increasingly apparent. Chief among these is its construction of
prejudice as an individual pathology. As I have explained elsewhere (Herek, 2004) ,
this clinically derived perspective limits our ability to understand hostility toward
sexual minorities, both among individuals and in society at large. I have argued instead
for the value of framing heterosexuals’ negative responses to sexual minorities in terms
of sexual prejudice and of conceptualizing sexual prejudice as the internalization of
societal stigma (Herek, 2000a, 2004, 2007 ; Herek, Chopp, & Strohl, 2007) .
In the present chapter, I elaborate on these points and provide a more detailed
framework than I have previously presented for conceptualizing both societal and
individual reactions to homosexuality and sexual minorities in the United States. 1
A central aim of this discussion is to integrate insights relevant to sexual orientation
from the sociological literature on stigma with findings from psychological research

How are different social groups portrayed in the mass media in contemporary society? How far have we come in terms of reducing or eliminating stereotypical images and portrayals of minority groups? To answer these questions, we need to place them in the context of the economic, technological, and social changes that have shaped postindustrial U.S. society and affected relationships between diverse groups in our society. For example, watching TV sitcoms and dramas today we see not only much greater diversity in cast members but also minority group members playing leading roles, something that was much less common just a few decades ago.
As you analyze how the various media forms portray cultural diversity, another thing to consider is the role of people with power in the media industry—those who make the decisions about what stories and images appear on a TV news program or magazine or newspaper article and how those programs or stories will be framed.
As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint.
