Case Study: Severance Pay
When one company buys another company, it is not unusual that some workers are
terminated. The severance benefits offered to the laid-off workers are often the subject of
dispute. Suppose that the Laurier Company recently bought the Western Company and
subsequently terminated 20 of Western’s employees. As part of the buyout agreement, it
was promised that the severance package offered to the former Western employees would
be equivalent to those offered to Laurier employees who had been terminated in the past
year. Thirty-six-year-old Bill Smith, a Western employee for the past 10 years, was one
of those let go. His severance package included an offer of 5 weeks’ severance pay. Bill
complained that this offer was less than that offered to Laurier’s employees when they
were laid off, in contravention of the buyout agreement. A statistician was called in to
settle the dispute. The statistician was told that severance is determined by length of
service with the company. To determine how generous the severance package had been, a
random sample of 50 Laurier ex-employees was taken. For each, the following variables
were recorded:
Number of weeks of severance pay
Number of years with the company
The statistician would like to use the above sample information and the appropriate
statistical method to determine whether Bill is correct in his assessment of the severance
package. Your report should have the following qualities:
Your report must be in a genuine report format with problem definition, analysis
and final conclusion.
All important analysis steps needs to be followed to arrive at the model to be
used for prediction. Attach the details of your analysis at the end of your report.
Very simplistic analysis with no sufficient details is assigned a near zero credit.
Just running excel does not guarantee any credit.
Your final conclusion should use both the 95% confidence and prediction
intervals. Improper use of these and corresponding wrong/sloppy interpretations
is highly penalized.

Essay two builds on some of the same ground that we covered in essay one: we’ll be writing about a topic that is personal and applicable to you, and we’ll be researching and integrating sources. However, where you got to choose your own topic in the first essay, the second essay will be about your major and the writing done in it. The title of this unit, “Writing in a Field,” is intentionally ambiguous—the word “field” can either refer to “an occupation,” or “an area with a lot of dirt.” Both are fitting, because we’re going to be rolling up our sleeves and getting our hands dirty by writing about your major/field, culminating in the kind of writing done. You will gather information by conducting interviews, observing specific locations, reading about your field, examining writing from your field, and/or distributing a survey. Once you complete your research, you will assemble the information you have found into an essay. In this essay you will analyze and examine academic and professional writing practices in your field.During this research process, consider these questions:
· What opportunities does graduating with my major afford?
· What type of work actually takes place in the professional setting of this field?
· What kind of writing does my major value?
· What do students/instructors/professionals in the field have to say about their work/writing?
· What skills (writing and other) do I now possess that will help me in my area of study?
· What will I need to practice and improve on? (These last two may help you make a good thesis)
NOTE: if you don’t feel like you have a “field,” this will be a great opportunity for you to get out there and try something out! Even if you randomly choose a major that you’re reasonably sure you’d never really choose, at least you’ll know for sure that you were right about it (or maybe even wrong) when you’re done.

The Unit Two essay will consist of a 6-8 page extended analysis of the work done in your major (especially the writing) and what steps you need to take to become exceptional in your field. Use the information you gather and generate from the interviews and assignments (described below) to provide focus for your essay. This essay should be a synthesis of all the work you’ve done analyzing your field of study: you will want to use the interview/survey information you’ve gathered, the academic essays you’ve analyzed, the materials you’ve read, and the online discussions you’ve participated in to put your writing in the context of your field. - 1. Assignment 2: Instructions Researching the Future Congratulations! You’ve just been hired as a consultant for a large firm that does research for major corporations in many fields. You get called to a meeting with your boss’s boss because they remembered from your resume that you have an expertise in (your major/your hobby/your interest). One of the companies that your consulting firm does work for has asked your company to do research on your area of expertise. Ultimately they want to know what this field will look like in 5 years’ time and whether they should look to be a part of that field in the future. Your boss’s boss is smart and knows that you’re brand new to the consulting game, even if you do know this field well. So you’re going to have support from expert researchers (librarians), your supervisor (your friendly local English 102 Instructor), and your colleagues. In the first part of this three-part assignment, your job will be to heavily research your area of expertise in order to put together two pictures: one of the field/area of interest as it is today, and one as you think it will be in 5 years. At the end of this assignment, you will present an annotated bibliography of at least ten sources (150-200 words each) that describes how each source has informed a larger picture of your area of expertise. This task requires that you: Carefully choose an area to investigate. That you meet with your instructor and have your topic pre-approved. Examine your topic thoroughly before library week so that you have a number of specific questions you intend to research. Show up to each class (2/6, 2/8, 2/10) ready to work with the librarians so that you can accomplish your research goals over the course of the week. Leave with at least ten sources that will inform your research. Identify and highlight important areas in your research. Present these ideas clearly in useful annotations. Work should be written in standard, edited English using MLA format for citation. Make sure you proofread your final essay—and check once more that you have used correct citation in your response and well as included a Works Cited page.
