This document discusses the User Experience Index (UXI) as a way to quantify and compare end-to-end user experiences across complex tasks and systems. It describes using the PURE methodology to rate steps in a user's current experience and ideal target experience to identify friction points. A UXI score is then calculated as a ratio of the target friction to current friction to provide a quantifiable goal and way to track progress. Examples analyze replacing a broken laptop and setting up two-factor authentication. The UXI approach aims to facilitate cross-team cooperation by measuring experiences holistically rather than just individual applications.

As generative AI adoption grows at record-setting speeds and computing demands increase, hybrid processing is more important than ever. But just like traditional computing evolved from mainframes and thin clients to today’s mix of cloud and edge devices, AI processing must be distributed between the cloud and devices for AI to scale and reach its full potential. In this talk you’ll learn:
• Why on-device AI is key
• Which generative AI models can run on device
• Why the future of AI is hybrid

A Comparison of People Counting Techniques viaVideo Scene AnalysisPoo Kuan Hoong
Real-time human detection and tracking from video surveillance footages is one of the most active research areas in computer vision and pattern recognition. This is due to the widespread application from being able to do it well. One such application is the counting of people, or density estimation, where the two key components are human detection and tracking. Traditional methods such as the usage of sensors are not suitable as they are not easily integrated with current video surveillance systems. As video surveillance systems are currently prevalent in most places, using vision based people counting techniques will be the logical approach. In this paper, we compared the two commonly used techniques which are Cascade Classifier and Histograms of Gradients (HOG) for human detection. We evaluated and compared these two techniques with three different video datasets with three different setting characteristics. From our experiment results, both Cascade Classifier and HOG techniques can be used for people counting to achieve moderate accuracy results.
Interest in critical scholarship that engages with the complexity of user experience (UX) practice is rapidly expanding, yet the vocabulary for describing and assessing criticality in practice is currently lacking. In this paper, we outline and explore the limits of a specific ethical phenomenon known as "dark patterns," where user value is supplanted in favor of shareholder value. We assembled a corpus of examples of practitioner-identified dark patterns and performed a content analysis to determine the ethical concerns contained in these examples. This analysis revealed a wide range of ethical issues raised by practitioners that were frequently conflated under the umbrella term of dark patterns, while also underscoring a shared concern that UX designers could easily become complicit in manipulative or unreasonably persuasive practices. We conclude with implications for the education and practice of UX designers, and a proposal for broadening research on the ethics of user experience.
Why Distributed Tracing is Essential for Performance and ReliabilityAggregage
Many engineering organizations have now adopted microservices or other loosely coupled architectures, often alongside DevOps practices. Together these have enabled individual service teams to become more independent and, as a result, have boosted developer velocity. However, this increased velocity often comes at the cost of overall application performance or reliability. Worse, teams often don’t understand what’s affecting performance or reliability – or even who to ask to learn more. Distributed tracing was developed at organizations like Google and Twitter to address these problems and has also come a long way in the decade since then. By the end of this presentation, you’ll understand why distributed tracing is necessary and how it can bring performance and reliability back under control.

Transforming Brand Perception and Boosting Profitabilityaaryangarg12
In today's digital era, the dynamics of brand perception, consumer behavior, and profitability have been profoundly reshaped by the synergy of branding, social media, and website design. This research paper investigates the transformative power of these elements in influencing how individuals perceive brands and products and how this transformation can be harnessed to drive sales and profitability for businesses.
Through an exploration of brand psychology and consumer behavior, this study sheds light on the intricate ways in which effective branding strategies, strategic social media engagement, and user-centric website design contribute to altering consumers' perceptions. We delve into the principles that underlie successful brand transformations, examining how visual identity, messaging, and storytelling can captivate and resonate with target audiences.
Methodologically, this research employs a comprehensive approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Real-world case studies illustrate the impact of branding, social media campaigns, and website redesigns on consumer perception, sales figures, and profitability. We assess the various metrics, including brand awareness, customer engagement, conversion rates, and revenue growth, to measure the effectiveness of these strategies.
The results underscore the pivotal role of cohesive branding, social media influence, and website usability in shaping positive brand perceptions, influencing consumer decisions, and ultimately bolstering sales and profitability. This paper provides actionable insights and strategic recommendations for businesses seeking to leverage branding, social media, and website design as potent tools to enhance their market position and financial success.
Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

• How do we get disparate teams focused on a common vision?
• How do we quantify and track progress (e.g., OKR’s)?

7. High level
approach we
have been
exploring
Many tasks require multiple tools – even when each tool is good,
there is often friction when moving from one to the next.
Identify end-to-end tasks
Friction = any element of a workflow that impedes the user’s ability
to complete their goal (screen design, content, business rules, etc.).
Estimate friction for tasks
UXI Scores indicate how much avoidable friction is in the system –
the difference between a current experience and an “ideal” one.
Compute a “User Experience Index” score for each task
10. Journey maps CAN show ”friction” …
…but a stack of journey maps is cumbersome to summarize –
we needed to quantify these journeys.

PURE Score = 41
You might be wondering – what does a 41 mean? Is that good or bad?
Hold onto that thought!
20. Summary of our experience with PURE analysis
• Does not replace user research.
• 3-point scale is good enough.
• Team rating and consensus is critical.
• Becomes faster and more efficient over time.
• PURE score itself is problematic.

1. Felicia visits the intranet home page and searches for “broken Mac keyboard.”
2. At the top of the search results, she sees an “IT Support” section that [shows her registered devices].
3. She clicks on the Mac that is experiencing the problem and selects a hardware problem.
4. She see selects “keyboard or pointing device” from the list.
5. The system [indicates that the device is out of warranty] and offers to request a replacement.
6. She agrees to receive a replacement refurbished device that she will select later.
7. The system [generates a ticket number] and [opens Devices@IBM with the initial fields pre-filled].
8. She selects the Mac that the system [indicates is the closest match to her current machine].
9. She enters her shipping address.
10. She confirms the information and submits the request.
