Research Essay on Southeast Asia
IH202: Southeast Asia: The Rice that Binds? Research Essay (10%) The definition of the phrase
Settlement pattern is associated with the understanding of how a particular society used the
available resources in its region. The phrase can also be described as the actual land upon which a
settlement is built. So what exactly is the pattern of settlements in Southeast Asia? Some say that
the pattern of human settlement in Southeast Asia is dispersed settlements where buildings are
spread out; an example would be the rural areas of Philippines, where different villages are at
different parts of the country. Others say that it s more like linear settlements that grow in a line,
often alongside roads, river valleys or the coast, for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This not only makes similar settlers more comfortable to fit in but it also makes the community
more bonded. Climate also affects settlement patterns in numerous ways. Colder countries tend to
have lesser population than warmer countries. For example, Alaska has the smallest population
in the United States. Extreme climate conditions may play a role too, Sometimes it is even
impossible to inhabit that area, due to the weather conditions. A land s geographical location can
determine whether an area has higher risk of experiencing an earthquake or not. Singapore is
considered very blessed as her geographical location is very well shielded by other larger
countries like Malaysia and Indonesia. Furthermore, we do not sit on the earthquake belt. However
Japan and Indonesia are less fortunate, as they are located right on the earthquake belt and are
constantly experiencing earthquake every now and then. If your settlement is located nearby to a
river, there will be a reliable source of food and transportation which adds to the land s desirability.
Some people are drawn to coastal areas as these areas offer a number of recreational activities, such
as surfing or wakeboarding and access to water transportation. Maybe they also appreciate the value
of waterfront property. In this essay, I have come to the conclusion that Southeast Asia has more
than one pattern of settlements. Instead, it has three, namely, the dispersal settlement, the linear
settlement and the nucleated

intelligence community. This paper will discuss how BG Ellis showed leadership attributes and
competencies covered in Army Doctrine Publication (ADP) 6 22 and Army Doctrine Reference

look at other issues in my career field. One of the issues I have noticed in my career path is the
negative connotation towards counterintelligence agents. This exists for several reasons, lazy
agents, inexperienced agents, or lack of knowledge of commanders. My goal is teach to younger

William Blake s Influence Of Literature
William Blake
William Blake s poetry was heavily influenced by the Christian Bible, which is quite uncommon
for the English Romantic poets. In fact, he is even known as the final religious poet of Britain.
This tendency toward using the Bible in his literature derived from his avid reading of this holy
book during his childhood. There is little information about any other schooling he might have had
outside of reading this book. However, his writing was unique from other Christian writings as he
drew direct influence from the Bible rather than the common church.

William Blake had radical views regarding his society and the politics that governed it. Blake
demonstrated these radical social views by renouncing clothing and thus condoning nudity. In
fact, Blake even stripped off his dress when meeting with his friends in a garden. His radical
political views were demonstrated while arguing with Soldier John Scofield. The soldier claimed
Blake openly spoke bad of the English King as well as expressed views in favor of Napoleon
Bonaparte, the French emperor, thus landing him in a trial where he was charged with sedation, or
the promotion of anti governmental rebellion.

Blake s demonstrated his radical political views when writing Europe. In this sample of writing,
Blake insinuated contempt against King George the III, though without actually referring to the
King himself. Writing such as these spurred rumors of Blake s treasonous remarks against the
King, such as that which was accounted by a soldier from Felpham. These rumors caused Blake to
be charged with treason, though he was freed of charges later.

HIV Infections in African American Males Essay
HIV infections in African American Males have been a national growing problem since the early
1990 s. According to CDC, in the United States, there are more than 1 million people living with
HIV. 48 percent are afro American males between the ages 13 44(CDC, 2007). It is estimated that
around 1 million people in the United States will be diagnose with HIVin the up coming year with
the lifetime risk of becoming infected is 1 in 16 for black males (CDC,2007). However, there is
growing concern about the disproportionate increase of HIV among adolescent African American
males ages 13 19. These adolescent males count for 37 percent of the cases, which double their
representation in their general population. Although, Poverty is a major... Show more content on

How Does Raph Use Ethos In Lord Of The Flies
Raph tends to use logos and Jack relies on ethos. They both use a variety of ethos, pathos, and
logos in their ultimate goal of persuading the boys to join their tribes. Ralph s balance of rhetoric
makes him the dominant leader based on his traits compared to Jack. Ralph and Jack use ethos,
credibility, of leadership in attempt of winning the other boys respect. For example, as Jack
tries to gain the vote of the other boys he declares, I ought to be chief... because I m chapter
chorister and head boy (22). Jack feels his ability to sing and experience with controls would
make him a good leader. When it comes to survival, singing will not benefit any of of the boys, so
it is an unnecessary talent. He believe he has credibility as chapter chorister and head boy, so that
makes him qualified for the position. Moreover, Ralph... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

but creating a fire will increase those chances. This decision reveals Ralph s ability to
collaborate with the others in order to get the necessary work done. The fire is a logical idea
because is someone sees it they will eventually be rescued. Comparatively, Jack uses his
resources when no one knows how to start a fire as he commands, His specs use them as burning
glasses! (40). Jack resourcefulness of using the glasses to start the fire not only works, but helps
them get rescued, keeps them warms, and allows them to cook. Nevertheless, Jack forcefully

viewing his vulnerability. Jack uses Piggy s glasses is resourceful because they can use the lenses

Introduction
Even though marketing has the ability to influence people of all ages, children seem to be the most
vulnerable ones. The 2003 Hastings report concluded, on the evidence up to that date, that children
in the UK are exposed to extensive food advertising, and that the diet advertised is considerably
less healthy than the diet healthcare experts would recommend (Halford and Boyland, 2013, p,
182). The case is not much different in other countries also. Reports from North America (Gantz, et
al. 2007; Institute of Medicine, 2005) clearly indicated the increased vulnerability of children
towards advertising and marketing activities of foods and non alcoholic beverage manufacturers.
The majority of the children do not have the maturity to segregate between the good and evil. They
are unaware of the traps made by the product manufacturers and service providers. Influenced by the
attractive advertisements and the sales promotion activities by the foods and non alcoholic
beverage manufacturers, children often compel their parents to purchase these things for them.
Parents, on the other hand, are ready to satisfy the needs of their children since many of the parents
think that fulfilling the demands of their children might help them to strengthen their relationships
with their children. It should be noted that the parent child relationship in the

El NiГ±o Vs La NiГ±a
El NiГ±o and La NiГ±a are opposite effects of the same phenomenon. They both cause changes
in the temperatures between the atmosphere and the Pacific region. El NiГ±o is caused by a
change in the wind patterns. The Pacific trade winds go from east to west and the warm ocean
water go the opposite direction. Normally the two forces creates a balance in the middle. When
the Pacific trade winds are weaker than usual, the warm ocean water rushes to the east and
collides with the the west coast of the coastal cities at the east of the Pacific. This causes the
average ocean temperature to be much warmer. La NiГ±a is effectively the opposite of El NiГ±o.

north western USA, above average precipitation in the Gulf Coast, including Florida, and a drier

Niagara River Meets Lake Ontario
Niagara on the Lake, Ontario is a charming town situated at the point where the Niagara River
meets Lake Ontario. Its nickname, Loveliest Town in Canada , is well deserved. It s a town rich in
both natural and cultural beauty. One of the highlights of its events calendar is the Shaw Festival,
which celebrates the works of George Bernard Shawand his contemporaries from April to
November each year with live performances.
Due to its mild climate and number of natural lakes, Niagara on the Lake has become a top wine
producing area, particularly of ice wine. Visitors flock to the town for wine tasting weekends,
garden and home tours, and antiquing. The romance of the area is palpable and makes it an ideal
getaway for couples and girls weekends.
Best Time to Visit Niagara on the Lake, ON
Niagara on the Lake appeals to visitors throughout the year, but if you enjoy cultural events and
wine, your best bet is September and October. You ll delight in the fall foliage, winery harvests
and tastings, as well as the end of the theater season. Weather is pleasant, ranging from the low 70s
to mid 40s. Cooler temperatures bring down hotel prices as well. As the fall goes on, discounts
grow. However, if you plan to visit on the weekend or during the summer during this spectacular
time, it s important to note that many hotels require a two night stay.
Summers are wildly popular because of the enjoyable weather. Average highs are in the low 80s.

Fabrication, And Testing Of Composites Essay
The purpose of this lab is was to expose students to the manufacturing, fabrication, and testing of
composites. In addition, it provides students with experience analyzing tensile and bending failures
of composites. Three tensile specimens and two bend test specimens were tested during this lab.
The tensile specimens were a wet lay up of bi directional E glass, and the bend specimens were
made up of a nomex honeycomb core with pre preg uni carbon faces. The three tensile specimens
were tested, their elastic modulus and ultimate tensile strengthcalculated, and these value were
compared to published approximately equivalent material properties. The two bend test specimens
were tested, their face bending stresses were calculated, the shear stress in the core was calculated,
and the bending and shear stresses were compared to published approximately equivalent material
properties. A failure mode analysis was conducted for both the tensile and bend test specimens. This
report summarizes the theory, procedure, and machines associated with the lab. Furthermore, it
graphically and verbally displays the results draw from lab, and provides conclusions to improve
the lab in the future.
Background
A composite material is a combinant of more than one material where each material retains its own
material properties. Composite materials are used throughout modern society and in nature because
they provide material properties that individual materials could not provide on their own.

The Effect of a Radiological Dispersion Device
The Effect a Radiological Dispersion Device The abundance of nuclear weapons or radiological
dispersal devices that terrorist groups have is perhaps one of the most terrifying threats to U.S.
security. Radiological dispersal devices (RDD) are also known as dirty bombs. They are made
of radioactive material combined with conventional explosives. They are intended to use
explosive strength to scatter radioactive material over a large area (Radiological Dispersal
Devices (RDD) / Dirty Bombs, 2009). Around the world, there are a lot of sources of radioactive
material that are not sheltered or not accounted for. Dishonest nations and terrorist groups can
get hold of these materials for dirty bombs. These volatile weapons may primarily kill a few
people in the direct area of the blast but are utilized primarily to create psychological rather than
physical damage by stirring up panic and terror. Their utilization would also consequence in
expensive cleanup for decontamination (Radiological Dispersal Devices (RDD) / Dirty Bombs,
2009). Typically, an RDD would be utilized to inflict psychological effects, rather than to achieve a
military or strategic goal. A military use might be area denial, where an RDD is employed to
contaminate an area to dissuade an enemy force from occupying that area. The psychological
effects like expectation, terror, over reaction and training costs are much more effective than actual
use, therefore the appeal to terrorist groups in conjunction with

Southern Speech In Tennessee Williams The Glass Menagerie
Williams s Southern origin is essential to the poetic qualities of his language, as many critics have
pointed out. Williams is particularly noted for his long line, which achieves the most surprising
effects through a repetition in the fashion of Gertrude Stein (Migid, 1964, p.282), by using archaic
words, introducing unexpected literary bookish words and ironically elegant phrase turns, which
brings about a stylized representation of the Southern diction, which is more conscious, more
vague, but also much more imaginative than the Northern speech. Being a Southern writer,
Tennessee Williams was accustomed to and in full harmony with the natural rhythm and melody of
Southern speech, which is heard particularly in the voices of women, as he himself pointed out.

Amanda in The Glass Menagerie is too wordy, she never stops talking; Vee s dialogue in Orpheus
Descending that symbolizes her sexual frustration is breathtaking; whereas Alma s obsession with
the spiritual in the first part of Summer and Smoke is reflected in her ethereal speech about the
Gulf Wind. Even the most illiterate characters created by Williams are as poetic in their speech as
the most educated and cultivated ones. Thus, Stanley Kowalski, the brutish character in A Streetcar
Named Desire has his unique rhythms, characterized by repetitions and inflections; Serafina in
The Rose Tattoo manages to be very eloquent by using monosyllabic words only; Val in Orpheus
Descending, talking about a little bird, gives a speech which at the same time is both lyric,
heightened and being in line with his character, simple but accompanied by some kind of a strange

Evolution and The Island of Doctor Moreau
There are a lot of misconceptions about Darwin s theory of evolution. One of the biggest is that
he called the theory by that name. Albrecht von Haller used the word evolution in 1744 to mean
to unroll, so the word was around in Darwin s time, but Darwin never used it in the sense we use
it today. It was added later by others, including Herbert Spencer, who is responsible for the theory
we call Social Darwinism. This theory is misnamed; it is not based on Darwin s work, but Spencer s.
Darwin did not come up with his theory out of nowhere. Like anyone else who has made
discoveries, he was influenced by others. For quite a long time before Darwin, people didn t look

family, Charles s possible career choices were limited: there weren t many professions respectable
enough. He started off studying medicine but couldn t stand to see blood. Charles earned a degree
in theology, but his real interest, which he pursued outside the classroom, was natural studies. For
three years as an undergraduate he ...mixed with some of the leading scientists of his day, at a level
far more intimate than would be possible for an undergraduate today. (Ruse, p. 33)
Through his connections Darwin eventually joined the H.M.S. Beagle on a navigational trip
around the world. There is some debate as to whether Darwin was the official ship s naturalist;
by some accounts he was only a passenger, because he lacked a degree in the natural sciences. At
the time of his departure, Charles was also creationist, meaning that he held to the Biblical view
of the origins of the earth and its creatures. He spent five years traveling on the Beagle, collecting
specimens of things he encountered in his travels. He never adapted to sea travel, and was sick for
most of the time he was on the ship; when his travels were over, he settled down permanently.
When he first returned, Darwin considered himself to be a geologist, (not a biologist), (Ruse, p.

Title:
BIODEGRADATION OF PESTICIDES IN SOIL ENVIRONMENT
Introduction:
Wise use and preservation of the soil recourses of a country can transform a poor society into a
prosperous one (Miller and Donahue 1992)
Agriculture is a key sector in the world economy where the competition between the countries is
of great importance in terms of the production. It also contributes about 25% of GDP of Pakistan
and provides livelihood directly to 70% of its rural population. In these conditions, pesticides are
commonly used to reach a definite quantity and quality of agricultural productions. Their
generalised use is attributed to (i) increase the quantitative and qualitative yields (ii) limit the
irregularities of crop production linked to the great parasitic catastrophe (iii) protect the food
reserves and many more. It has been estimated that about 3000 5000 tones of pesticides are used
predominately only in Cotton growing areas of Pakistan (ESCAP Virtual Conference June 16,
2007). According to a report of IFEN, pesticides are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

functions like decomposition of organic matter, release of certain enzymes and plant growth
regulators, with having no destructive impact on soil fertility and structure that some more vigorous

The United States Of America, A Country Driven By...
The United States of America, a country driven by business, money, and technological
advancement, has the third highest corporate income tax rate in the world; the highest among the
thirty four industrialized nations of the Organization for Economic Co operation and Development
(OECD) (Pomerleau, 1). Large corporations that have developed in the United States have
recognized this. In 1982, McDermott Inc., with the help of its lawyers, developed a strategy in
which they could continue with their business, founded in New Orleans, without having to be
punished by the prohibitive taxrates employed by the U.S. government (Mider, 2). Thus, the

A tax inversion would allow a business to escape this high tax rate by creating or buying a foreign
parent... Most importantly, perhaps, companies that invert overseas can take advantage of the
generous U.S. system of interest deductions for payments to their own affiliates abroad benefits
that are only available with a foreign parent company (Mider, 2). The change of address isn t
always a true move either as most companies that utilize this strategy usually keep their executive
headquarters in the US. Some companies that have transitioned to foreign turf include: Medtronic,
Burger King, Tim Horton s, Stratasys, and Horizon Pharma. Currently, New York based Pfizer and
Dublin based Allergan are dealing with a pending tax inversion in which the two would merge, a
$160 billion deal, making this the potential largest inversion ever (Dunsmuir, 1). The US
government is actively making new rules and regulations regarding corporate tax inversions which
has put the Pfizer Allergan merge on hold. According to Lindsay Dunsmuir, last November,
following the announcement of the Allergan Pfizer deal, Treasury clamped down on inversions by
limiting a U.S. acquirer s ability to set up a new foreign parent in a third country and to stuff assets
into a foreign parent to meet post inversion ownership limits. Another treasury imposed regulation
would prevent Allergan s major deals that

Ravinder Kaur Who Says You Re A Dane Summary
In the article who says you re a dane? author Ravinder Kaur takes a deep and Poignant look at the
state of immigration and what it means to be Danish within the Danish culture and Danish politics.
Throughout the article, Kaur provides numerous premises and pieces of evidence to support her

Bbc3 Unit 9 Final Project
12 year old BBC3TV s trust company has approved the plan to make the channel an online only
entity. Due to BBC3TV s failing revenue, the the BBC Corporation will essentially be saving about
ВЈ30m ($46m) a year. The channel, which was targeted towards the 16 to 34 year old
demographic, was unable to do so.
In its first major decision since Rona Fairhead was appointed as chair of the trust last September,
the regulator recognised the clear long term potential in moving online, but admitted there were
clear concerns about the loss of services to the key age group, as well as the BBC s ability to try out

Appreciative Internal Audit: A Strength Based Approach to Quality System Auditing A Case Study.
Jon Morris President JDQ Systems Inc. Vancouver, BC, Canada
Introduction
Traditional internal audits fulfill an important need for companies with fresh ISO 9001:2000
Quality Management System implementations, but for companies with mature systems, those
registered for more than five years, an innovative approach to auditing called Appreciative Internal
Quality Audit can take them beyond compliance to excellence. In effect, the Appreciative Audit
approach both raises the bar and adds value for the 65,000+ North American organizations that

Based on a conservative estimate by JDQ, North American companies spend more than $4.5 billion
on planning, conducting and reporting internal audits each year. This estimate is based on 2005
estimates of ISO registered companies in North America for whom internal audits are mandatory.
The estimates do not include companies that audit their business management systems on a
voluntary basis. See Table 1.

The Chemical Substance Of Hydrogen Atoms
Introduction:
Water is a chemical substance composed atomically of an oxygen atom, and two hydrogen atoms,
giving it the chemical formula H2O . It has a bent molecular structure, with the centralised oxygen
atom at the top of the molecule with two lone pairs of electrons above it, and the two hydrogen
atoms branching out below, each connected to the oxygen by covalent bonds. VSEPR (Valence
Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) Theory is utilised in chemistry for the prediction of a molecules
geometry. This theory was constructed off the idea that valence electron pairs around an atomhave a
tendency to repel each other, thus forcing the molecule to organise itself in a manner that creates
the least possible electron repulsion. By observing a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the electrons are positioned closer to the oxygen atom, the upper segment of the molecule is
slightly negatively charged (gaining negative charge from electron) and the lower segment is
slightly positively charged (losing negative charge from electron) . Therefore water is a polar
molecule.
A polar molecule is a molecule that possesses a negative charge at one end, and a positive charge
at another end, caused by the positioning of the electrons due to electronegativity. However, a
molecule can have a positive and a negative charged end and still be non polar. Dipoles are a
measure of polarity that are caused by a variation in electronegativity. The difference in
electronegativity results in an atom having a greater pull on the shared pair of electrons. If the
shape of a molecule causes equal dipole magnitude and an equal distance between the dipole
vectors, then the dipoles cancel out and the molecule is considered non polar .A polar molecule
possesses a neutral net charge as the positive and negative sections of the molecule eliminate an
imbalance in charge. Polarity is exclusive to covalent bonded compounds, as electron sharing is
required in order for partial positivity and partial negativity to occur. The only covalent molecules
that don t contain polar bonds are those including atoms that possess an equal electronegativity,
such as H2, or O2, as neither atom possesses a larger attractive force than the other acting upon the
electrons .

Baroque Music And The Renaissance Era
Baroque was an interesting period of time. It was originally originated from Rome, as a way to
glorify the Counter Reformation Catholic Church, and then spread beyond Italy to Spain, France,
Germany, Austria, the Low Countries, and England. In Baroque musicians started to practice
multiple instruments being used at the same time. As opposed to Renaissance era, Baroque art
mainly worked for pope, and important ruler throughout Europe. One of the new genre of music
was Opera. The aim of early opera was to reproduce elements of ancient Greek drama. Claudio
Monteverdi is considered to be the creator of opera as genre. Because of the main aim of early
opera to reproduce elements of ancient Greek drama, Claudio Monteverdi plots draw upon
stories from classical Greek mythology. Orfeo was one of his first work in opera genre, which
was is a rescue drama due to main hero rescuing his bride. From listening a short piece of it, to
me it does sound like heroic drama, as the opening music sounds very encouraging, I liked it. You
can clearly hear toccata to be sounded three times to show multiple use of instrumental sounds that
were available to a composer. Vivaldi, Violin Concerto in E major is great example of Baroque
music, best known composition in the entire repertoire. Each part is repeated at a softer dynamic
level. I personally love this piece, not only because I enjoy listening to violin, but also for its
tempo, alternation and contrast. Messiah, Behold, a Virgin shall

I Am Joaquin Poem Analysis
During the 1960 s, the Civil Rights Movement wasn t the only one occurring. Struggling to
assimilate into American culture, and suppressed by social injustices convicted by their Anglo
counterparts, the Chicano movement was born. In the epic poem I am Joaquin written by Rodolfo
Gonzales in 1969, we dive into what it means to be a Chicano. Through this poem, we see the
struggles of the Chicano people portrayed by the narrator, in an attempt to grasp the American s
attention during the time of these movements. Hoping to shed light on the issues and struggles the
Chicano population faced, Gonzales writes this epic in an attempt to strengthen the movement

Many times, these Chicanos were pushed off their lands and forced to try and survive
elsewhere. I owned land as far as the eye could see under the Crown of Spain, and I toiled on my

and beast and all that he could trample. But... THE GROUND WAS MINE. This is what life
was like before the Spanish American War and before the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This was
life before Chicanos were pushed off their land because Anglos fought the documents in court.
This is before the treaty that was supposed to protect their rights fell through. This is when life
was hard, but it was a life they knew and a struggle they lived with. Although Chicanos have
endured many struggles, this is one they want to fight for. Chicanos faced another problem along
with their land being taken and being treated as second class citizens. Assimilating into American
culture was difficult. Do you keep in touch with the roots of your homeland or do you change and
adapt to the new ways of American culture? This was a struggle for Chicanos and it was difficult to

to fit into both cultures, putting them into somewhere else entirely. This didn t help their sense of
belonging, and ultimately casted them farther as outsiders than before.

To start out the survey I asked not to write your name just to indicate whether you were male or

people start to use marijuana? There are many reasons why most young people start to smoke
marijuana because their friends or brothers and sisters use marijuana and pressure them to try it.
In my survey five out of ten students said the reason for starting to smoke was because of their
peers or older siblings. When interviewing Jada she said, I only started because of my friends, they

someone you connect with.
3. Ashtanga
Ashtanga is a series of poses which realign the spine, detoxify the body and build strength, stamina
and flexibility. There are 75 poses in all and they can take anywhere between an hour and a half to
two hours to complete. You start with sun salutations and then move to standing poses, seated
poses, inversions and backbends before finishing with relaxation.
You can learn ashtanga at a teacher led class, and then when you are happy with the order of the
poses you can either practice on your own or in a mysore class where you practice at your own
pace but have a teacher for guidance.
Ashtanga is a very athletic form of practice and is very popular. If you like a sense of order then

Characterization In A Good Man Is Hard To Find
Exploring the idea that all men are born sinners, O Connor demonstrates immoral indulgences
entertained by various characters. Readers are introduced to grandmother, an elderly woman
whose consistent unscrupulous behavior exhibits her inner motives. Grandmother uses subtle,
indirect confrontation to get her way until she is faced with The Misfit, a runaway criminal who
believes that crime is a justifiable. In A Good Man Is Hard To Find, Flannery O Connor uses
characterization to display a loss of morals, imagery to portray evil in society, and symbolism to
emphasize the struggle of obtaining grace to prove how life is nihilistic without religion.
Characterization is used not only to amuse readers, but to also display an understanding of
human nature, in this case a decline in values. June Star is described as critical with a nasty

Education, Education And Education
Governments play a vital role in providing some of the basic amenities such as health, education
and security to its citizens. According to Milton Friedman, the government has a very important
and critical role to play in the provision of education and more specifically provision of primary
education. Government involvement in the educationsector can either be in the form of loans,
subsidies or grants to provide an enabling learning environment to the needy students. This paper
analyzes the role of subsidies in the support of higher educationbased on Friedman s arguments. In
addition, the paper will attempt to explain the spillovers effects resulting from the government
support of education. Education plays a primary role in reducing the level of illiteracy and
knowledge in the society. Due to different financial position of parents and the high cost of
education, the question remains whether the government should intervene and subsidize the
financial burdens on the parents.
In Friedman s argument, education only benefits the individual student but does not benefit the
community through the effects of a positive externality. According to him, education only benefits
the individuals rather than the society. Educational benefit to an individual also referred as the
positive spillovers effects improve the general welfare an individual. For the society to have proper

Billie Holiday Research Paper
No two people on earth are alike, and it s got to be that way in music or it isn t music. This little
known quote is from none other than Billie Holiday. These words of hers serve accurately to
show that she was aware that in order to thrive in the music world, you had to be different. She
was an African American female vocalist beginning in the 1930 s. Holiday was not privileged, yet
she still managed to make an impact on the musicworld with her unique, almost rugged voice and
meaningful lyrics that caused her listeners to do a double take.

Time and drugs added an even more gravely tone to Holiday s voice, but her vocals still come out
in a beautiful and unique way. The beat behind Holiday s vocals is no longer fast paced and
upbeat. For the majority of the recording, all that is played behind her voice is a piano, other
than a few trumpet solos. The song lyrics in Strange Fruit can be seen as being more artful than
entertaining; this is certainly not a song you would dance to. She graphically illustrates African
American bodies hanging from poplar trees (lynching) with phrases like, the bulging eyes and
twisted mouth, here is fruit for the crows to pluck, and the sudden smell of burning flesh. As
discussed previously, she leaves silences between phrases for the listener to digest the scenario
she is producing. Jazz critic Ralph suggests that she was a sort of living lyric to the song Strange
Fruit , hanging not on a poplar tree, but on the limbs of life itself. (Gill, 2015). It is evident that
she sang this song with passion and soul. No longer did she have to play for swing bands in
which she was intended to show off. She gained the ability and reputation to sing what she felt
passionate about. She grew into a vocalist who made her own rules and had settled into her very
own style. Over a century has gone by since the birth of the legendary jazz vocalist, Billie
Holiday. Holiday faced never ending adversity on her journey, but stopped at nothing to gain
stardom. Her legacy inspires other artists to sing what they are passionate about and never give up,
even if society and fate want them to. Music styles have changed but her influence and unique style

of the person and symptoms currently experienced (Cordell et al. 147). These assessments are
combined to ensure that there is a clear reason for concern, however, in the film, simply memory
testing is done. During sessions with a neurologist, it is important if an informant, someone who
has witnessed the change in cognition, is present during the diagnostic process (Cordell et al. 147).
After informing Alice of this, she, alongside her husband, is tested through the repetition of
sentences and ability to memorize a name and address. Alice s neurologist merely tests her memory,
while excluding other important examinable areas. If the cognitive assessments cause further
concerns, a full dementia evaluation is conducted (Cordell et al. 147).
Subsequently, the full evaluation process that takes place also varies among individuals of

Under the theory, Enron power broker actions (deceptive accounting, manipulating accounting
numbers, keeping two sets of accounting books, etc.) are not the driving factors in determining
good or bad for the group. It is the outcome or by product as a result of the actions that are to be
considered (Velasquez, et al, 1989). The bottom line is: if more good than bad is the result for the
most people then the behavior will be considered as ethical.
STEP 1: Alternative actions and the Enron stakeholders affected by these actions The choices are
Course of Action (COA) 1, Enron leaders follow time tested, trusted, and ethical accounting
practices or Course of Action (COA) 2, Enron leaders put aside professional ethics for personal
economic gain. The stakeholders are many. Ken Lay, Jeff Skilling, Andrew Fastow, other high level
executives, board of trustees, Enron employees, outside partnerships to include foreign countries,
investors, and the accounting firm Arthur Anderson and its thousands of employees. The
stakeholders are in the tens of thousands and maybe exceeding 100,000 thousand people.
STEP 2: COA 1 and COA 2 benefits and costs to each person or group affected. We will first
consider COA 1. Enron at one time was a great company that hired good people that believed in
doing things right, and they were known for being a model corporation. In fact in 1999 Enron was
named by Fortune as America s Most

Effects Of Water On Mars
Mars, a planet made of volcanic basalt rock as the soil on mars is like talcum powder. The red
planet is a great discovery as several ask questions such as, Is there water on mars? Or Is there any
life on Mars? Well after Earth was formed, Mars was the planet containing a higher percentage that
is with a hostable climate than any other planetis the solar system. Outflow channels and other
geologic features provide ample evidence that billions of years ago liquid water flowed on the
surface of Mars. (https://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msp98/why.html) As said in the article water was on
the red planet billions of years ago. But, was life? As a child growing up, not everyone would have
thought this but maybe they did. We believed that there were

Feminism In Young Goodman Brown
The difference in attitude and treatment towards men and women from society is shown in Young
Goodman Brown ,in this case, I am going to analyze the anti feminist side. There are multiple
points in this short story that aid my point. The author, Nathaniel Hawthorne may have written this
based on his time when differences towards genders occurred. Women are portrayed as powerless
but rather innocent victims while men are seen as the more powerful individuals, making all the
decisions for them and their families. If people do not follow the roles their genderassociate with,
the conflicts between them and society may uprise with it. Faith, the newlywed wife of Goodman
Brown, is one of the main women who seems to be following a stereotypical role of a womanin her
time, or is she?As Young Goodman Brownopens up, Faith is seen as a little girl rather than a
newlywed woman. In the second paragraph, it states, A lone woman is troubled with such dreams
and such thoughts that she s afeard of herself sometimes. and in the sixth paragraph, ...he looked
back and saw the head of Faith still peeping after him with a melancholy air, in spite of her pink
ribbons. These quotes portray Faith as an irresponsible woman who is afraid to be alone ,without
her husband, and is not capable of taking care of herself. Speaking about Faith s pink ribbons, they
symbolize tainted innocence, which is contradicting to a woman s pure appearance. Faith s tainted
innocence is proven later in the

Rodeo Research Paper
What are you doing next weekend? Going to a rodeo. Oh... what about the next weekend? I have
another rodeo. I guess you could say that rodeo is kind of a big deal for me. That I m a Rodeo
Nerd. Whether it s being in them, or just watching them. I love rodeos. I have many reasons to
love them! Like for example, rodeos are always a ton of fun, you re always meeting new people
from all kinds of places, and last but not least the cowboys! Fun; amusing, entertaining, or
enjoyable. I would definitely say that rodeo is all of those things. There isn t one of the sports in
a rodeo that don t get adrenaline going. If someone get bored of one of the events, don t you
worry, there will be another one coming up right after, Have

Communication, Language, And Speech Skills
Mrs. Moore has the children do group activities, partner activities, and use their words when
something goes wrong, which are all ways to help develop communication, language, and speech
skills. Parents can continue to help these skills develop at home by talking to their children,
teaching them new words, and having them use their own words to ask for something. Overall,
Addison s communication, language, and speech skills are almost where they need to be and
parents need to focus on her using her words when something goes wrong and having her use more
complete sentences.
Cognitive development is the process of developing intelligence, problem solving skills, and
advanced thought. Addison has showed that she is in the proper state of cognitive development for
her age. On two occasions she has shown she can name and identify eight colors. On April 5, during
testing, she identified a blue rectangle, purple oval, pink triangle, green heart and red circle. On
May 3, at playdough during the flower unit, she identified, when asked what color they were, a
yellow stone, a blue stone, a green stone, an orange stone, pink playdough, and purple playdough.
She has also shown that she can match at least five shapes. On April 5, during testing, she
identified a blue rectangle, purple oval, pink triangle, green heart and red circle. She has also
shown that she can name a circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, and heart. On March 3, she
identified the oval she needed to cut out

Journey Through Suburban Life in John Cheever s The Swimmer
The Swimmer, by John Cheever, illustrates one man s journey from a typical suburban life to
loneliness and isolation. This short story is characteristic of John Cheever s typical
characterizations of suburbia, with all it s finery and entrapments. Cheever has been noted for his
skill as a realist depicter of suburban manners and morals (Norton, p. 1861). Yet this story presents
a deeper look into Neddy Merril s downfall from the contentment of a summer s day to the
realization of darker times.
The story begins with a scene of midsummer, with the laziness of those who can afford to lounge
near the pool, those with money who are able to joke about having drank too ... Show more content

1863). He remains friendly, not rude, and continues upon his way.
As he continues from pool to pool, each house is described by the various occupants, who most
are drinking or having a party and welcome him, keeping his mind on the idea of being an explorer/
hero. The first inclination of a turning lies in the coming storm, the stand of cumulus cloud that
city had risen and darkened, and while he sat there he heard the percussiveness of thunder again
(Norton, p. 1864). As he starts again to make his way towards home, he begins to be a bit foggy,
wondering what time it has gotten to be. It is almost as if his mind is clouding over, the imagery
of darkness descending, it was growing dark; it was that moment when the pinheaded birds seem to
organize their song into some acute and knowledgeable recognition of the storm s approach
(Norton, p. 1865).
His growing fogginess becomes more apparent as he is unable to recall details of his life, ...and
rain lashed the Japanese lanterns that Mrs. levy had brought from Kyoto the year before last, or
was it the year before that? (Norton, p. 1865) He seemed to remember having heard something
about the Lindleys and their horses but the memory was unclear (Norton, p. 1865). He is baffled and

How Did Greek Culture Influence The Minoan Culture
In order to explain the influence the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures had on the later Greeks it is
important to understand the beginnings of Greek culture. The first known civilization of Greek
culture were the Minoans, consequently, there is not a lot of information about this group (The
Flow of History, 2007). The language used by the Minoans is referred to as Linear A, the
language is said to have been the foundation for later Greek language. The Mycenaeans broadened
the Linear A language to make it their own, it is known as Linear B.
The Minoans were thought to be a peaceful society, conversely, the Mycenaeans were geared
most toward warfare. The peacefulness of the Minoan culture is depicted in their artwork, pottery,
as well as their architecture (The Flow of History, 2007). The ruins of the palaces from the
Minoans do not display any fortification to indicate they needed to protect themselves from
enemies. The weapons used in later Greek culture was similar to the weaponry crafted by the
Mycenaeans, as well as the Minoans. The noted difference is the metal, the Minoans and the
Mycenaeans crafted their weapons with bronze the later Greeks used iron (Matthews et. al., 2014).

In the later Greek culture, following the Dark Ages, trade was again the main focus for the
prosperity of the civilization (Matthews et. al., 2014). In both cultures there is a religious belief
in gods and goddesses, moreover, both shared in the worship of Zeus. There are various statues
depicting the gods, goddesses, as well as the heroes of both the Minoans and the Mycenaeans. The
Minoan culture worshipped Zeus in the form of a child who died as an adult, conversely, the
Mycenaeans worship Zeus as an immortal god who created and ruled both mortals as well as

Everyday Life Goffman Analysis
Presentation of Self in Everyday Life Goffman introduces us to the concept of dramaturgy in
regards to the development of the social Self (and therefore to Gender Identity). For Goffman,
dramaturgy is how the individual becomes a performer in public/quasi public settings, and their
surrounding environment by default become an audience. He focuses on the dynamic between the
two, especially on how the performer must manage their impression to win audience approval. To
fail at garnishing such approval means risking the entire social setting. (This builds upon, or at
least references, Cooley s Mirror Self in that one turns to others to understand one s self in a social
situation). The implications here is that the social Self is not simply... Show more content on

There is no Foucauldian analysis at work here (although one can extrapolate it for instance, one
might argue this is a very early imperfect iteration of performativity). There are no considerations
about power s through line in dramaturgy. For example, who wields power in a performance is in
the performer or the audience they are trying to impress (or the team players the performer relies
upon in certain scenes)? For example, wouldn t everyone be both a performer and an audience
member at the same time, and if so what are the implications of that blurring of boundaries? Also,
when exactly does a performance end? And how does the performance and its attendant power
dynamics change in relationship to setting? (And to other more overarching external factors like
the given politics of a certain age or culture)? And finally, Goffman s lack of nuance regarding the
performers standpoint leave the impression that all actors carry the same expectations and resources
into a scene. (He does imply that the role women must perform is different than that of men but this
is only mentioned in passing without any deep analysis. And there is no additional intersectional
analysis that could bring in other indexes, such as

  • 5. Research Essay on Southeast Asia IH202: Southeast Asia: The Rice that Binds? Research Essay (10%) The definition of the phrase Settlement pattern is associated with the understanding of how a particular society used the available resources in its region. The phrase can also be described as the actual land upon which a settlement is built. So what exactly is the pattern of settlements in Southeast Asia? Some say that the pattern of human settlement in Southeast Asia is dispersed settlements where buildings are spread out; an example would be the rural areas of Philippines, where different villages are at different parts of the country. Others say that it s more like linear settlements that grow in a line, often alongside roads, river valleys or the coast, for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This not only makes similar settlers more comfortable to fit in but it also makes the community more bonded. Climate also affects settlement patterns in numerous ways. Colder countries tend to have lesser population than warmer countries. For example, Alaska has the smallest population in the United States. Extreme climate conditions may play a role too, Sometimes it is even impossible to inhabit that area, due to the weather conditions. A land s geographical location can determine whether an area has higher risk of experiencing an earthquake or not. Singapore is considered very blessed as her geographical location is very well shielded by other larger countries like Malaysia and Indonesia. Furthermore, we do not sit on the earthquake belt. However Japan and Indonesia are less fortunate, as they are located right on the earthquake belt and are constantly experiencing earthquake every now and then. If your settlement is located nearby to a river, there will be a reliable source of food and transportation which adds to the land s desirability. Some people are drawn to coastal areas as these areas offer a number of recreational activities, such as surfing or wakeboarding and access to water transportation. Maybe they also appreciate the value of waterfront property. In this essay, I have come to the conclusion that Southeast Asia has more than one pattern of settlements. Instead, it has three, namely, the dispersal settlement, the linear settlement and the nucleated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. William Blake s Influence Of Literature William Blake William Blake s poetry was heavily influenced by the Christian Bible, which is quite uncommon for the English Romantic poets. In fact, he is even known as the final religious poet of Britain. This tendency toward using the Bible in his literature derived from his avid reading of this holy book during his childhood. There is little information about any other schooling he might have had outside of reading this book. However, his writing was unique from other Christian writings as he drew direct influence from the Bible rather than the common church. William, Corbett. Blake, William (1757 1827). William Blake had radical views regarding his society and the politics that governed it. Blake demonstrated these radical social views by renouncing clothing and thus condoning nudity. In fact, Blake even stripped off his dress when meeting with his friends in a garden. His radical political views were demonstrated while arguing with Soldier John Scofield. The soldier claimed Blake openly spoke bad of the English King as well as expressed views in favor of Napoleon Bonaparte, the French emperor, thus landing him in a trial where he was charged with sedation, or the promotion of anti governmental rebellion. • 11. Marketing Of Food And Non-Alcoholic Beverage To Children... THE MARKETING OF FOODS AND NON ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES TO CHILDREN Name Course Professor University City, State Date Introduction Even though marketing has the ability to influence people of all ages, children seem to be the most vulnerable ones. The 2003 Hastings report concluded, on the evidence up to that date, that children in the UK are exposed to extensive food advertising, and that the diet advertised is considerably less healthy than the diet healthcare experts would recommend (Halford and Boyland, 2013, p, 182). The case is not much different in other countries also. Reports from North America (Gantz, et al. 2007; Institute of Medicine, 2005) clearly indicated the increased vulnerability of children towards advertising and marketing activities of foods and non alcoholic beverage manufacturers. The majority of the children do not have the maturity to segregate between the good and evil. They are unaware of the traps made by the product manufacturers and service providers. Influenced by the attractive advertisements and the sales promotion activities by the foods and non alcoholic beverage manufacturers, children often compel their parents to purchase these things for them. Parents, on the other hand, are ready to satisfy the needs of their children since many of the parents think that fulfilling the demands of their children might help them to strengthen their relationships with their children. Normally the two forces creates a balance in the middle. Radiological dispersal devices (RDD) are also known as dirty bombs. They are made of radioactive material combined with conventional explosives. They are intended to use explosive strength to scatter radioactive material over a large area (Radiological Dispersal Devices (RDD) / Dirty Bombs, 2009). Around the world, there are a lot of sources of radioactive material that are not sheltered or not accounted for. Dishonest nations and terrorist groups can get hold of these materials for dirty bombs. These volatile weapons may primarily kill a few people in the direct area of the blast but are utilized primarily to create psychological rather than physical damage by stirring up panic and terror. Their utilization would also consequence in expensive cleanup for decontamination (Radiological Dispersal Devices (RDD) / Dirty Bombs, 2009). • 17. Southern Speech In Tennessee Williams The Glass Menagerie Williams s Southern origin is essential to the poetic qualities of his language, as many critics have pointed out. Williams is particularly noted for his long line, which achieves the most surprising effects through a repetition in the fashion of Gertrude Stein (Migid, 1964, p.282), by using archaic words, introducing unexpected literary bookish words and ironically elegant phrase turns, which brings about a stylized representation of the Southern diction, which is more conscious, more vague, but also much more imaginative than the Northern speech. Being a Southern writer, Tennessee Williams was accustomed to and in full harmony with the natural rhythm and melody of Southern speech, which is heard particularly in the voices of women, as he himself pointed out. Albrecht von Haller used the word evolution in 1744 to mean to unroll, so the word was around in Darwin s time, but Darwin never used it in the sense we use it today. It was added later by others, including Herbert Spencer, who is responsible for the theory we call Social Darwinism. This theory is misnamed; it is not based on Darwin s work, but Spencer s. At the time of his departure, Charles was also creationist, meaning that he held to the Biblical view of the origins of the earth and its creatures. He spent five years traveling on the Beagle, collecting specimens of things he encountered in his travels. Salman Anwar Research Proposal Title: BIODEGRADATION OF PESTICIDES IN SOIL ENVIRONMENT Introduction: Wise use and preservation of the soil recourses of a country can transform a poor society into a prosperous one (Miller and Donahue 1992) Agriculture is a key sector in the world economy where the competition between the countries is of great importance in terms of the production. It also contributes about 25% of GDP of Pakistan and provides livelihood directly to 70% of its rural population. In these conditions, pesticides are commonly used to reach a definite quantity and quality of agricultural productions. Their generalised use is attributed to (i) increase the quantitative and qualitative yields (ii) limit the irregularities of crop production linked to the great parasitic catastrophe (iii) protect the food reserves and many more. The change of address isn t always a true move either as most companies that utilize this strategy usually keep their executive headquarters in the US. Some companies that have transitioned to foreign turf include: Medtronic, Burger King, Tim Horton s, Stratasys, and Horizon Pharma. Currently, New York based Pfizer and Dublin based Allergan are dealing with a pending tax inversion in which the two would merge, a $160 billion deal, making this the potential largest inversion ever (Dunsmuir, 1). The US government is actively making new rules and regulations regarding corporate tax inversions which has put the Pfizer Allergan merge on hold. According to Lindsay Dunsmuir, last November, following the announcement of the Allergan Pfizer deal, Treasury clamped down on inversions by limiting a U.S. acquirer s ability to set up a new foreign parent in a third country and to stuff assets into a foreign parent to meet post inversion ownership limits. • 26. The Chemical Substance Of Hydrogen Atoms Introduction: Water is a chemical substance composed atomically of an oxygen atom, and two hydrogen atoms, giving it the chemical formula H2O . It has a bent molecular structure, with the centralised oxygen atom at the top of the molecule with two lone pairs of electrons above it, and the two hydrogen atoms branching out below, each connected to the oxygen by covalent bonds. VSEPR (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) Theory is utilised in chemistry for the prediction of a molecules geometry. This theory was constructed off the idea that valence electron pairs around an atomhave a tendency to repel each other, thus forcing the molecule to organise itself in a manner that creates the least possible electron repulsion. By observing a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the electrons are positioned closer to the oxygen atom, the upper segment of the molecule is slightly negatively charged (gaining negative charge from electron) and the lower segment is slightly positively charged (losing negative charge from electron) . Therefore water is a polar molecule. A polar molecule is a molecule that possesses a negative charge at one end, and a positive charge at another end, caused by the positioning of the electrons due to electronegativity. However, a molecule can have a positive and a negative charged end and still be non polar. Dipoles are a measure of polarity that are caused by a variation in electronegativity. The difference in electronegativity results in an atom having a greater pull on the shared pair of electrons. If the shape of a molecule causes equal dipole magnitude and an equal distance between the dipole vectors, then the dipoles cancel out and the molecule is considered non polar .A polar molecule possesses a neutral net charge as the positive and negative sections of the molecule eliminate an imbalance in charge. Polarity is exclusive to covalent bonded compounds, as electron sharing is required in order for partial positivity and partial negativity to occur. The only covalent molecules that don t contain polar bonds are those including atoms that possess an equal electronegativity, such as H2, or O2, as neither atom possesses a larger attractive force than the other acting upon the electrons . ... One of the new genre of music was Opera. The aim of early opera was to reproduce elements of ancient Greek drama. Claudio Monteverdi is considered to be the creator of opera as genre. Because of the main aim of early opera to reproduce elements of ancient Greek drama, Claudio Monteverdi plots draw upon stories from classical Greek mythology. Orfeo was one of his first work in opera genre, which was is a rescue drama due to main hero rescuing his bride. She graphically illustrates African American bodies hanging from poplar trees (lynching) with phrases like, the bulging eyes and twisted mouth, here is fruit for the crows to pluck, and the sudden smell of burning flesh. There are many types of tests and approaches to cognitive assessments depending on the age of the person and symptoms currently experienced (Cordell et al. 147). These assessments are combined to ensure that there is a clear reason for concern, however, in the film, simply memory testing is done. During sessions with a neurologist, it is important if an informant, someone who has witnessed the change in cognition, is present during the diagnostic process (Cordell et al. 147). After informing Alice of this, she, alongside her husband, is tested through the repetition of sentences and ability to memorize a name and address. Alice s neurologist merely tests her memory, while excluding other important examinable areas. • 40. The Ethics Of The Enron Case Introduction The Enron case is well known for being the largest corporate bankruptcy in American history. Thousands of people world wide lost billions of dollars, lost life savings, and lost their jobs. Due to the vast corruption, greed and the blatant disregard for integrity from the very top of Enronleadership, world markets crumbled and investor confidence in corporate America was severely damaged (Chandra, 2003.) We will look at the accounting fraud committed by Enron executives and interested parties. We will run their accounting tactics through the Utility Ethics test to determine if there were alternative actions that would have been considered ethical as determined by the test. Under the theory, Enron power broker actions (deceptive accounting, manipulating accounting numbers, keeping two sets of accounting books, etc.) are not the driving factors in determining good or bad for the group. It is the outcome or by product as a result of the actions that are to be considered (Velasquez, et al, 1989). The bottom line is: if more good than bad is the result for the most people then the behavior will be considered as ethical. STEP 1: Alternative actions and the Enron stakeholders affected by these actions The choices are Course of Action (COA) 1, Enron leaders follow time tested, trusted, and ethical accounting practices or Course of Action (COA) 2, Enron leaders put aside professional ethics for personal economic gain. • 42. Feminism In Young Goodman Brown The difference in attitude and treatment towards men and women from society is shown in Young Goodman Brown ,in this case, I am going to analyze the anti feminist side. There are multiple points in this short story that aid my point. The author, Nathaniel Hawthorne may have written this based on his time when differences towards genders occurred. Women are portrayed as powerless but rather innocent victims while men are seen as the more powerful individuals, making all the decisions for them and their families. If people do not follow the roles their genderassociate with, the conflicts between them and society may uprise with it. Faith, the newlywed wife of Goodman Brown, is one of the main women who seems to be following a stereotypical role of a womanin her time, or is she?As Young Goodman Brownopens up, Faith is seen as a little girl rather than a newlywed woman. In the second paragraph, it states, A lone woman is troubled with such dreams and such thoughts that she s afeard of herself sometimes. and in the sixth paragraph, ...he looked back and saw the head of Faith still peeping after him with a melancholy air, in spite of her pink ribbons. These quotes portray Faith as an irresponsible woman who is afraid to be alone ,without her husband, and is not capable of taking care of herself. Speaking about Faith s pink ribbons, they symbolize tainted innocence, which is contradicting to a woman s pure appearance. Faith s tainted innocence is proven later in the ... • 45. Communication, Language, And Speech Skills Mrs. Moore has the children do group activities, partner activities, and use their words when something goes wrong, which are all ways to help develop communication, language, and speech skills. Parents can continue to help these skills develop at home by talking to their children, teaching them new words, and having them use their own words to ask for something. Overall, Addison s communication, language, and speech skills are almost where they need to be and parents need to focus on her using her words when something goes wrong and having her use more complete sentences. Cognitive development is the process of developing intelligence, problem solving skills, and advanced thought. Addison has showed that she is in the proper state of cognitive development for her age. On two occasions she has shown she can name and identify eight colors. On April 5, during testing, she identified a blue rectangle, purple oval, pink triangle, green heart and red circle. On May 3, at playdough during the flower unit, she identified, when asked what color they were, a yellow stone, a blue stone, a green stone, an orange stone, pink playdough, and purple playdough. She has also shown that she can match at least five shapes. On April 5, during testing, she identified a blue rectangle, purple oval, pink triangle, green heart and red circle. • 46. Essay on Journey Through Suburban Life in John Cheever s... Journey Through Suburban Life in John Cheever s The Swimmer The Swimmer, by John Cheever, illustrates one man s journey from a typical suburban life to loneliness and isolation. This short story is characteristic of John Cheever s typical characterizations of suburbia, with all it s finery and entrapments. Cheever has been noted for his skill as a realist depicter of suburban manners and morals (Norton, p. 1861). Yet this story presents a deeper look into Neddy Merril s downfall from the contentment of a summer s day to the realization of darker times. The story begins with a scene of midsummer, with the laziness of those who can afford to lounge near the pool, those with money who are able to joke about having drank too ... As he continues from pool to pool, each house is described by the various occupants, who most are drinking or having a party and welcome him, keeping his mind on the idea of being an explorer/ hero. The first inclination of a turning lies in the coming storm, the stand of cumulus cloud that city had risen and darkened, and while he sat there he heard the percussiveness of thunder again (Norton, p. 1864). As he starts again to make his way towards home, he begins to be a bit foggy, wondering what time it has gotten to be. It is almost as if his mind is clouding over, the imagery of darkness descending, it was growing dark; it was that moment when the pinheaded birds seem to organize their song into some acute and knowledgeable recognition of the storm s approach (Norton, p. 1865). • 47. How Did Greek Culture Influence The Minoan Culture In order to explain the influence the Minoan and Mycenaean cultures had on the later Greeks it is important to understand the beginnings of Greek culture. The first known civilization of Greek culture were the Minoans, consequently, there is not a lot of information about this group (The Flow of History, 2007). The language used by the Minoans is referred to as Linear A, the language is said to have been the foundation for later Greek language. The Mycenaeans broadened the Linear A language to make it their own, it is known as Linear B. The Minoans were thought to be a peaceful society, conversely, the Mycenaeans were geared most toward warfare. The peacefulness of the Minoan culture is depicted in their artwork, pottery, as well as their architecture (The Flow of History, 2007). The ruins of the palaces from the Minoans do not display any fortification to indicate they needed to protect themselves from enemies. The weapons used in later Greek culture was similar to the weaponry crafted by the Mycenaeans, as well as the Minoans. The noted difference is the metal, the Minoans and the Mycenaeans crafted their weapons with bronze the later Greeks used iron (Matthews et. al., 2014). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 48. Everyday Life Goffman Analysis Presentation of Self in Everyday Life Goffman introduces us to the concept of dramaturgy in regards to the development of the social Self (and therefore to Gender Identity). For Goffman, dramaturgy is how the individual becomes a performer in public/quasi public settings, and their surrounding environment by default become an audience. He focuses on the dynamic between the two, especially on how the performer must manage their impression to win audience approval. To fail at garnishing such approval means risking the entire social setting. (This builds upon, or at least references, Cooley s Mirror Self in that one turns to others to understand one s self in a social situation). The implications here is that the social Self is not simply... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is no Foucauldian analysis at work here (although one can extrapolate it for instance, one might argue this is a very early imperfect iteration of performativity). There are no considerations about power s through line in dramaturgy. For example, who wields power in a performance is in the performer or the audience they are trying to impress (or the team players the performer relies upon in certain scenes)? For example, wouldn t everyone be both a performer and an audience member at the same time, and if so what are the implications of that blurring of boundaries? Also, when exactly does a performance end? And how does the performance and its attendant power dynamics change in relationship to setting? (And to other more overarching external factors like the given politics of a certain age or culture)? And finally, Goffman s lack of nuance regarding the performers standpoint leave the impression that all actors carry the same expectations and resources into a scene. (He does imply that the role women must perform is different than that of men but this is only mentioned in passing without any deep analysis. And there is no additional intersectional analysis that could bring in other indexes, such as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
