•DEFINITION of ARTICULATOR:-
A mechanical instrument that
represents temporomandibular joints
and jaws, to which mandibular and
maxillary casts may be attached to
stimulate some or all movements.

CLASSIFICATION

• INT. PROSTHODONTIC WORKSHOP AT
UNIV. OF MICHIGAN-1972:
• 1. Class I
• Simple holding instruments capable of accepting
single static registration.
• Only vertical motion is acceptable.
• e.g. J.B.Gariots, Barn-Door hinge.

three dimensional dynamic registrations
and utilize a facebow transfer. The
condylar pathways can be selectively
angled and customized.
• e.g. Denar.

ARCON & NON-ARCON
ARTICULATORS.

USES OF ARTICULATORS

• To hold opposing casts in a predetermined
fixed relationship.
• To diagnose dental occlusal conditions in
both natural and artificial dentitions.

• To plan dental procedures that involve
positions; contours; & relationship of both
natural and artificial tooth as they relate to
each other.
To aid in the fabrication of dental
restoration and lost dental parts.

• Articulators can be helpful in teaching and
studying occlusion and mandibular
movements.
• To view the lingual occlusion.

REQUIREMENTS OF AN
ARTICULATOR

• REQUIREMENTS.
• Articulators must accurately maintain centric
position.
The patient’s casts must be easily removable and
attachable to the articulator without loosing the
horizontal and vertical relationship.

• The articulator should be able to open
and close in a hinge like fashion. The
articulator should accept a facebow
transfer.
• The articulator should have an incisal
guide pin with positive stop that is
adjustable and calibrated.

• For the complete denture construction
in balanced occlusion.
• Condylar guides should allow right
lateral, left lateral and protrusive
movements

FACEBOW

DEFINITION OF
FACEBOW:-
•A caliper like device used to record the
relationship of maxillary arch to some
anatomical reference point or points and
then transfer the relationship to an
articulator.

USES OF FACE-BOW
•1. It permits a more accurate use of lateral
rotation points for the arrangement of teeth.
•2. It aids in securing the anteroposterior
cast position with relation to the condyles of
the mandible.

• 3. It registers the horizontal relationship
of the casts quite accurately, and thus
assists in correctly location the incisal
plane.
• 4. It is an aid in the vertical positioning of
the casts on the articulator

• WHEN TO USE?

1. Cusp form teeth are used.
2. Balanced occlusion in eccentric position is
desired.
3. A definite cusp fossa or cusp tip to cusp
inclination is desired.
4. Interocclusal check records are used for

5. The occlusal vertical dimension is subject
to change, and the relations of the tooth
occlusal surfaces are necessary to
accommodate the change.
6. When there is significant error in
antroposterior, lateral, vertical relations

• To determine the position of the real condyle
axis of motion.
• Accurate mounting of casts in the articulator,
both in relation to the position of the condyles
and to certain points on the head.
