Arther Miller
Come along as an adventure through time takes launch. From the interim of Arthur Miller's birth and death, he wrote some of America's greatest
plays which are known all around the world. This world renowned screenwriter and playwright is arguably considered the best playwright of the 20th
century. We start our journey here on October 17, 1915 in Harlem, New York where Miller was born. Arther Miller was the son of Isidore and
Augusta, a Polish and Jewish Immigrant family who owned a flourishing manufacturing business. The miller family got hit hard during the Wall Street
Crash of 1929 nearly losing everything. Arther Miller worked hard after he graduated high school, so he would be able to pay for his collage tuition at
the University of Michigan. It was at Michigan that he wrote his first play, No Villain. This play won him the school's Avery Hopwood Award and
sparked the beginning of his successful career as a playwright. The beginning of Miller's playwright career came out with a boom with, All My Sons,
which debuted on Broadway in 1947. This play won Miller his first of many Tony Awards. His next... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This play did ensue some political trouble against when he was brought to appear before the House of Un–American Activities Committee for the play
allegory with McCarthyism. McCarthyism is the act of making false accusations without showing the proper evidence. Miller denied to follow any of
the committee's orders. Again in 1957, Brooks Atkinson wrote about millers stand:"He refused to be an informer. He refused to turn his private
conscience over to administration by the state. He has accordingly been found in contempt of Congress. That is the measure of the man who has
written these high–minded plays." This ruling was capsized by Congress two years after the debate started in 1956, so the debate only lasting for an

Arthur Miller Influence On The Crucible
In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller the context sets up the whole plot of the story. Much like the book The Scarlet Letter the setting is in the
north during early colonization time this was also the time of Puritanism, Puritans believed in being pure and Godly. Preachers were held on a
pedestal and citizens were looked at through a magnifying glass. Throughout The Crucible you begin to learn of the strong sense of Christianity there;
you were condemned if you did not go to church every Sunday, much like John Proctor. The Crucible is based around a true story, witch hunting during
this time period was an actual occurrence. Nineteen people were actually accused and hung or stoned in Salem, Massachusetts for witchcraft.

Miller displays people saying false things to protect themselves, even if it means killing another person who is innocent. Jealousy, greed and grudges
was shown during the content of The Crucible. Miller creates this image of Americans that is atrocious, all while using a true story. Miller wrote this
book in the in 1950's, during the time of the "communist witch hunt" Miller was even a victim of this, he was questioned during the process. His books
tended to lean to the more political side, he used a historical reference to bring awareness to his modern times issues, such as the "communist witch
hunt" and the characters of past and modern Americans. McCarthyism was an occurrence that took place in the time period of Miller. Wisconsin
Senator Joseph McCarthy began multiple hearings and investigation into communism in the United States government. His idea of wiping out all
communist in America spreaded like a wildfire, so much so that he won reelection. The similarity between The Crucible and the "communist witch
hunt" is uncanny. There is much symbolism in the book that relates back to McCarthyism, such as the girls in the book making false claims without
having any proof. Sounds very familiar to the situation that occurred in the

New Criticism Of Daisy Miller
In Henry James's "novella," his heroine: Daisy Miller is a young woman who dared to challenge the old guard. Her nature, though rebellious was
pure and innocent, and her death was in itself her last rebellion. She died a martyr for a cause in which she believed: the freedom of women. She
was the first of a new generation of independent women, women outside of the control of the Mrs. Walkers of the world: women who were free.
Alive Daisy was bound by the chains of society, in death she was let loose from her bindings. Her death was not an example of failure, it was the
greatest gift she could have given. In life, Daisy was looked at as a woman of ill repute by the socialites who mattered in Europe, but in death, she
superseded this role, and became something much more: a symbol of rebellion. In this way Daisy's death challenged the social order. By loosing her
life, she showed just how powerful a woman could be. Using a lens of New Historicism, the reader is able to recognize much more from the behavior
of Daisy in contrast to using a lens submerged in today's mentality. From an eye born and raised in the twenty–first century, one really cannot see what
all the fuss was about. She just appears to be a normal (albeit very rich) girl, who goes about her life acting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her resting place is shown to be that of a righteous girl, gone in her prime, not that of a scandalous vixen. In particular the spring flowers suggest
happiness and irreproachability, while the evergreen cypress tree represents something steadfast and unchanging. This is probably one of the best
examples of Daisy's purity. The way James describes her resting place is in itself tacit acknowledgment of her

The Crucible by Arthur Miller
The performance of Arthur Millers drama, The Crucible, put on by the WolfPack Players is one that has taken a fair bit of polishing to go from an
average high school show, to a great show; the director, Patrica Scarborough, can certainly attest to such a bold claim. While we were held back by
petty issues such as lines, we were, as a company, able to pull it together, just in time for opening. I can honestly say, in my heart, that this show
could have gone better. In no way am I marking this a shameful show, nay, in my opinion, the show is quite good. I, for one, love the cast that had
been assigned to perform this drama. But the basic act of line memorization had bogged us down, and I primarily attribute that to the language of
Arthur Miller's piece; The Crucible is indeed a heavy show, the Director had announced to us that many times before. Even for myself, The Crucible is
a dense, heavy story. From my transition from the auditions to the performance, I can say that personal growth had happened, not continuously, but in
small spurts. At the audition, I had felt like this wasn't really my show. That feeling I had made me nervous and uncomfortable about auditioning, but
I had decided to keep at it; I put on a straight face and acted happy to be there, auditioning, even though I was unsure about the show. I had learned,
later on, that even if insecurity strikes during an audition, that its always better to act like its not there at all. Keeping a straight face, as opposed to

Death of Salesman by Arthur Miller
In the play Death of a Salesman by the playwright Arthur Miller, the use of names is significant to the characters themselves. Many playwrights
and authors use names in their works to make a connection between the reader and the main idea of their work. Arthur Miller uses names in this
play extraordinarily. Not only does Miller use the names to get readers to correlate them with the main idea of the play, but he also uses names to
provide some irony to the play. Miller uses the meanings of some of the names to tie in the characteristics of the characters. Willy, the protagonist of
Miller's play, has a brother, Ben. Ben is much older and long dead when this play begins. Ben, or Benjamin, is a religious name that refers to the "Son of

what I always wanted. My own apartment, a car and plenty of women. And still, goddammit, I'm lonely. (23; Act 1)
All of this sadness builds up inside of Happy and he strives for attention. He is constantly trying to achieve his dad's attention by saying, "I'm losing
weight, you notice Pop" (29; Act 1)? Happy always tells his family he is going to get married also. He continues telling he is going to get married to
put a mask of happiness over his feelings of inadequacy.

Lucifer, Satan or his common name, the devil. From an English perspective, he is the first antagonist. In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, the Devil is the
main cause of conflict. He is the root of Evil. Now the reaction to devilish behavior varies from person to person, possibly even society to society. The
Puritan society combats evil doing with actions that could be considered worse than the Devil 's worst of deeds. This is demonstrated by Reverend
Hale, whose importance starts initially as a figurehead of judgment, and his influence of judgment slowly dwindles. Another proof of imperfection
in the Puritan society is the article McCarthyism. It projects the same sickening goose chase that ruins the lives of harmless people. Abigail is the
ultimate icon of the mockery that is the Salem witch trials. Her "encounters" with demons in the courtroom are borderline comedic. The puritans
justify all decisions with the argument that all drastic measures are necessary to remove the demons within the townspeople, for the greater good.
The concept of religion is obviously critical to the people of Salem, so it comes as no surprise that the initial reaction of evil is to call Reverend Hale
for assistance. However, as time passes in Salem, Hale is disgusted with what has happened in Salem. Hale is totally aware of how blasphemous the
results of the trials are. Miller writes, "Let you not mistake your duty as I mistook my own. I came into this village like a bridegroom to his beloved,

Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller
Arthur Miller, the author of the play Death of as salesman and many others, was born in New York in the year 1915. He later attended the University
of Michigan which is where he started writing plays. He wrote many plays such as The Last Yankee, and Broken Glass. Miller died in the year 2005.
The play Death of a salesman was written in 1949, the year of American largest economic expansion. This play is about a salesman named Willy
Loman who seems to have a mental illness who has a wife, Linda Loman, and two sons, Biff and Happy Loman. Willy has a distorted sense of moral
values and passes them on to his sons. He teaches his sons that to be successful you have to be a well–liked person. Throughout the play the reader can
see that being a salesman is not the job Willy is qualified for which does not help his family's financial deficit. In the play, Death of a Salesmen,
Arthur Miller uses the characters, symbolism, and the structure of the play represents the theme of lacking awareness of reality. Miller uses the
element of the characters to presents the theme of lacking awareness of reality. A main contributor to this theme is the character of Willy Loman. In
the play Willy refuses to acknowledge that he should have pursued a career as a carpenter. Willy is attached to the idea of being a business man even
if he is not successful or happy throughout his career. This has blinded him from seeing that becoming a carpenter would have brought him more

Arthur Miller And Elia Kazan
It's crazy to think how two people's lives could be so intertwined. Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan, two completely different people with clashing
personalities and morals, have one of the most complicated relationships in Hollywood history. With the same childhood, the same love interest,
and same event that would make or break their career, the lives of these men were more intertwined than they had ever hoped or planned to be.
Before Miller and Kazan had even met, their childhood proved to be somewhat similar. Kazan was born in Turkey to a couple who later moved to New
York; Miller, only six years later, was born to Polish immigrants living in Harlem, New York ("Arthur Miller"; "
Elia Kazan"). Already, it is easy to see

Having sympathy on her, Kazan took Monroe to dinner and later introduced her to Arthur Miller. Miller was immediately taken by her but was
unaware of how difficult things were about to become. In 1955, Kazan admitted in a letter to his wife of the shameful relationship that came about
between him and Monroe. The next year, Miller and Monroe got married but divorced four years later (Lewis). Elia and Arthur proved to have had
a complicated relationship. By letting Marilyn into their lives, they both suffered some kind of loss: Kazan destroyed his character, reputation, and
the trust of his wife. On the other hand, Miller witnessed what had happened to his friend's reputation, and still continued with the marriage. Four,
short years later, he had to deal with the dreaded, and expected divorce papers. Miller fell in love, whereas Kazan was lustful as he was with many
other women. Their morals were beginning to clash, and Miller was starting to recognize the evil within Kazan's character. This was only a start to the
many complications that would arise between the two men. During the Cold War, Kazan and Miller both faced a choice that could either end their
career, or destroy their characters. The HUAC accused both Elia and Arthur of communism and asked them to give up others involved. Miller refused
to sell anyone out; however, Kazan admitted to a two–year membership along with the names of eight

The Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller
A Dime a Dozen
The Death of a Salesman is a tragedy written by playwright Arthur Miller and told in the third person limited view. The play involves four main
characters, Biff, Happy, Linda, and Willy Loman, an ordinary family trying to live the American Dream. Throughout the play however, the family
begins to show that through their endeavors to live the American Dream, they are only hurting their selves.
The play begins by hinting at Willy's suicidal attempts as the play begins with Linda asking if he crashed the car asking, "You didn't smash the car
did you?" (Miller 1183). This first line foreshadows Willy'ssuicide at the end of the play as it foreshadows that he is not completely sane.
Subsequently, Biff and Happy Loman are introduced as Linda and Willy's two children. Biff has recently returned to his home, but his parents
constantly criticize him for not having a good job. Willy and Biff do not get along, as Willy believes that Biff has failed him because he did not
succeed in being wealthy and well known. Biff was the classic all American teenager in high school, being a star in football and admired by all his
peers. Willy describes him saying, "I thank almighty God you're both built like Adonises." (Miller 1193). Willy builds his children up believing they
are above everyone else which will eventually lead to problems later in their life.
Later in the play it is revealed that Willy has been lying to his children and is not doing well in his job. His

Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller
Throughout the novel, Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, it is very evident that the author embodies his perceptions of the American Dream
through his character's identity. We see how the life of an insignificant man unravels and creates chaos for his wife and eldest son Biff, while also
seeing an unhealthy relationship develop between the two. Yet, despite the negative connotations that thenovel presents to its readers, Death of a
Salesman can be interpreted as a rhapsody of human nature instead of a tragic chronicle. Within the pages of this infamous novel, we see that Miller
develops the concepts of liberation, individualism, and the American Dream. Through these concepts, we see how Willy Loman, our protagonist and
Biff Loman, our antagonist, struggle with the pressures of an American socio–cultural driven era. Firstly, the ideology of liberation is bluntly scattered
within the pages written by Miller. From the personal description of Biff's younger years in high school to Willies ambition to become a wealthy
salesman, the sense of wanting to achieve greatness is evidently present. We see that both of these characters are constantly attempting to remove the
shackles of conformity through their efforts of wanting to leave a "thumbprint" for others to admire over time. Willies long life dream of wanting to be
a successful sales man proves this statement; this character lives his entire life laboring to create a better future for his son and wife so that they could

Relationship between Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan
"I think it's a mistake to ever look for help outside of oneself" – Arthur Miller. This statement can be used to describe the complicated relationship
between Arthur Miller and Elia Kazan during the Red Scare. Both Miller and Kazan were at the height of their career during this timeframe and the
major focus on communism was the start of downfall of their friendship. Miller and Kazan had friction over the decades in both their professional
lives as well as personal lives. There were many issues from the personal issue of Marilyn Monroe to professional conflict, but society's focus on
communism and figuring out who supported the idealism was the final strain that caused irreparable damage. The red scare was during the late 1940s
and early 1950s. It was a time in history when the fear of communism would spread throughout the United States causing widespread panic. The red
scare had a dramatic effect on every aspect of life in the United States of America from your average citizens to the Hollywood elite. The red scare
was a time period when paranoia caused people to question everybody and quickly assume anyone and everyone could be a spy for the Soviet Union.
Citizens and government officials were suspicious of communist activity and actively searched for any that were among them. People started blaming
others they suspected of being communist sympathizers. This is similar to plot and outline of The Crucibles structure. It

Fear In The Crucible By Arthur Miller
In the year 1692, the quiet town of Salem, Massachusetts went into utter turmoil as accusations of witchcraft ran rampant throughout the town
resulting in multiple deaths. Arthur Miller's, The Crucible, depicts the events that took place in Salem that year. A group of young girls dancing in
the forest sparked the fears of many. The girls feared punishment, the ministers and priests feared the devil, and the people feared witches, so they
all lied. Lying is a major theme in this play. Characters in The Crucible use lies out of fear with the hopes of gaining power over others. In The
Crucible, Abigail uses lies to escape persecution by other characters. Fear appears to be the primary reason she is trying to escape persecution: fear of

Elizabeth comes to the court, and Danforth asks her if John Proctor has committed lechery with Abigail Williams. In order to protect her husband's
reputation, she lies and says, "Your husband–did he indeed turn from you?... No, sir [he did not]" (Miller 1225–1240), knowing full well that Proctor
did commit lechery with Abigail. This lie that Elizabeth makes is the only lie she tells, yet in turn ends up having her husband be hanged. Although
the end result was not what Elizabeth wants, she tried to do what is right to protect her husband. Proctor lies to try and protect his loved ones from
harm. When Proctor tries to protect his family and friends, he does not take anyone else down with him, instead he takes the blame all himself when
he states, "Mr. Proctor... Did you bind yourself to the Devil's service... I did" (Miller 754–757). Proctor goes out like a true hero, and sacrifices himself
for the good of the community. Mary Warren lies at the beginning of the story when she and the other girls are caught, Mary Warren pretends to

the moment to escape punishment at that time, yet later on in the play Mary Warren is exposed in court, and is accused of pretending to faint.
However, when she is asked to prove it, "when people accused of witchery confronted you in court, you would faint, saying their spirits came out of

Partially because of this, Willy makes the claim that he will go out and buy seeds that night. Once again, after Willy is left stranded at the
restaurant, he expressed the need to buy seeds before he returns home as displayed on page 122, "Oh, I'd better hurry. I've got to get some seeds.
I've got to get some seeds, right away. Nothing's planted. I don't have a thing in the ground," (Pg. 122). His urgency to buy seeds expressed much
more than the want to have plants. In fact, these seeds hold a completely different meaning than the traditional sense and use of seeds. This
partially can be due to the fact that he has yet made his peace in life before he takes his own life. In fact, it is possible that when he said there was
nothing planted yet, he was actually referring to his children, as they do not have steady jobs or lives. He has often expressed worry over the fact
that his children have done very little to achieve anything in life. The seeds represent his children, and the plants that they grow into represent would
they could become. Willy is often seen as disappointed by his boy and is often described through an allusion, "The mythological allusion comes
midway through the first act, during one of Willy 's rose–tinted recollections of the family 's past, when his sons were young and all things were
possible," (Thompson). Unfortunately, Willy has come to the conclusion that his boy no

Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller
Arthur Miller's play titled "Death of a Salesman" offers a plethora of morals pertaining to the human condition. One moral, shown in Aesop's fable
"The Peacock and Juno", pertains to that one should be content with that of which they are given, for one cannot be the best at everything. In
Death of a Salesman there is, without a doubt, a paucity of content and happiness within the Loman family. But what does it mean to truly be
content? Aesop's fable "The Peacock and Juno", as the name suggests, describes a peacock approaching the Goddess Juno, and he asks her to
provide him "the voice of a nightingale", which would be ancillary to his other various attractions. When Juno refuses, the beautifully feathered
creature is confused, for he is, after all, her favorite bird. She responds to his confusion with "Be content in your lot; one cannot be first in
everything" (Aesop). The moral of this short fable is clearly spoken in Juno's quote. Simply put, the moral is "be content with what you have, for
you cannot be the best at everything". Comparable to the Peacock, Arthur Miller's Willy Loman appears to his superior, Howard, requesting both an
increase in salary, and better working locations in New York, rather than his current in Boston. Willy originally asks to work at a wage of $65 a week,
justifying his requests with the fact that "[t]he kids are all grown up", and that he is "just a little tired" (Miller 79). When Howard refuses, Willy

Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller
In "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller, Willy Loman, a salesman in New York, struggles with his internal beliefs of what makes America great.
His lovely wife attempts to support him and as his sons grow, they defy his passions and ideals. Willy goes through his days committed to being a
likable person and has goals to support his family. Unfortunately, Willy Loman's ideals become outgrown as the technological age develops. Due to the
protagonist's motivations, he represents the tragic hero in a few ways. Willy Loman's career is based off of his belief in the American dream. He feels
that if he is well–liked, it will lead to profitable sales. Loman also has grand delusions that the American dream includes athletic sons, a housewife
and a home that is paid for. Charley tells Willy in act two, "The only thing you got in this world is what you can sell. And the funny thing is that
you 're a salesman, and you don 't know that" (Meyer 1757). The audience would believe that Willy Loman is motivated by money because he is a
salesman, but this is not his true drive. In the end, Willy comes to the conclusion that the best way to help his sons live a good life, would be to kill
himself so they can collect from his insurance. Willy represents the failed American dream. Willy Loman is not your typicalhero. He has no
supernatural powers, he is not financially secure, and not always of sound mind.

Lying In The Crucible By Arthur Miller
In Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, an important universal theme is, "lying is apart of everyone's nature." There are many other themes, but this
one is very important, because in the play no one is safe from being accused of witchcraft. The conflict is when Abigail and her group of girls lie in
the court room and make unjust accusations about people, because of money, land, and or relationship issues. This connects to the universal theme,
because these lies will make the people being accused, either be put in jail or hung. A case of Abigail and the girls lying, is when Mary Warren tells
the court that Abigail and the girls are lying about seeing things or feeling things. Abigail says, "I done my duty pointing out the Devil's people" (Miller

The reason being is Mary tried to tell the court the truth about the girls lying. In addition, Abigail goes to Reverend Paris's house, and suddenly
falls to the ground. Paris then realizes she has been stabbed with a needle. Abigail claims, "[Proctor's] wife's familiar spirit pushed it in" (Miller
176). This quote means, that Abigail believes it felt like Goody Proctor's bad spirit came upon her, because Elizabeth is angry at Abigail for
getting together with John. Abigail states that it was Goody Proctor, because she says, "Goody Proctor always kept poppets" (Miller 190). She
says this, because if Elizabeth gets accused of witchcraft, she will be hung and then Abigail will be able to get Proctor. This consociates with the
universal theme, in a way where Abigail will lie, just to get Proctor. The universal theme of "lying is apart of everyone's nature," is evident quite
often in, The Crucible. The reason being, is most people want more land, some are prideful, meaning they will lie to make sure people don't think less
of them. Every character in this play has lied, whether it be regarding accusations of witchcraft or for the reason to get revenge. If there was no lying in
this play, then many people would haven't of hung, been put into jail, nor interrogated

Arthur Miller Arthur Miller, in his plays, deals with the injustice of society's moral values and the characters who are vulnerable to its cruelty. A
good majority of these plays were very successful and earned numerous awards. According to Brooks Atkinson, a critic for the New York Times,
Miller's play Death of a Salesman was successful because the play "is so simple in style and so inevitable in theme that it scarcely seems like a thing
that has been written and acted. For Mr. Miller has looked with compassion into the hearts of some ordinary Americans and quietly transferred their
hopes and anguish to the theater" (Babusci 1261). This play, in 1949, received the Pulitzer Prize, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the

In an article published by "The Guardian" one reviewer said The Crucible captivated and horrified me and i never knew a play could be so engulfing or
lasting. I would recommend it to anyone, for it will last way beyond the last page, in fact I have a feeling that I will remember it for the rest of my
life(source 7). The House of Un–American Activities Committee called Miller to appear before them because of his play The Crucible, but he
refused to comply with their demands(source 7). His third most famous play is After The Fall first produced in 1964 this play is about when a
lawyer relieves scenes from his past that test his ability to relate to the women in his life, he is forced to accept responsibility for his actions(source
1). His fifth famous play was The Price produced in 1968 this play revisits much of the territory that was part of millers social consciousness
throughout his career as a dramatists(source 1). His last almost famous play is Homely Girl, A Life published in 1992 he turns his attention to a
smaller, more intimate, canvas, but one that in its deceptive delicacy still encompasses a vast range of human fears, ambitions, and desires. Janice–the
eponymous homely girl–has hated her face ever since she was a child and her mother held up Ivory Snow advertisements to her, saying, "Now that is
beauty." Homely she is, but also fiercely herself. Still,it is not until she falls in love with a blind musician that she feels her full nature unfold in this

Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller
In Arthur Miller's play "Death of a Salesman" he demonstrates how a salesman goes through life struggling with his problem and reality. In the
beginning, Willy Loman returned home from driving long hours to sell his product. When Willy was beginning to be too loud talking to himself
with flashbacks of memories the boys would come down and they all have a fight. In a flashback, Biff went to meet Willy to tell him about school
but caught a woman in the room with Willy. From that day on Biff never appreciated Willy and Willy never put any structure on the boys and let the
dreams run wild. At the end of the story, Willy crashes the car, killing himself. Biff tried to explain to the family that Willy wasn't true to himself or
anyone else. In... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though Willy was jealous towards Ben, he continues to work his best in his own ways. Willy shows characterization through the motivation
of his goals that he wants to show off to his sons so they can achieve them. But intentionally gave his sons goals that are considered a failure
because they only related to Willy and both of the boys have different things in mind of a job. With that, Willy is his own unique person that is
motivated by being a salesman while his family seems to disagree with him by how he preaches it. Consequently, not everyone understands how
Willy's mind works. He copes by making reality false and his failures behind him. Conflict has a big part in his relationship with Biff. Conflict is
the struggles within the plot between opposing forces. Willy has good and bad flashbacks talking to himself and how his life came to be. Willy
copes with the failures he has with looking towards the future. One example is how Happy proposed an idea to open a store with Biff and "Willy:
That is a one–million–dollar idea! (. . .) Lick the world! You guys together could absolutely lick the civilized world." (Miller pg.1538). This shows
how Willy's ambitions are good intention for the boys. Willy takes it to far with talking to much about the future to realize that anyone else is talking
and showing their real self. Another example is how Biff was trying to tell him that Oliver did not recognize him and did not even discuss the deal.

Arthur Miller: The Family Man
The Family Man As we grow up in this world we are introduced to morals and values in which we all have some sense of in each and every one of
us. We are born with a sense of protectiveness for our loved ones, a necessity to guide them to the right choices, and a need to provide for them.
Arthur Miller a father of three children himself, has this deeply rooted into his mind and within his literary works. (Abbotson) Arthur Asher Miller a
man of many very high esteemed novels was born in New York City on October 17, 1915. (Hadomi) A man who saw all the harshness of the Great
Depression, and had many jobs including a clerk, and a delivery boy for a bakery before school. Arthur Miller began writing in 1934 while he attended

This deteriorates his pride and makes him very ashamed but this shows us that he puts his family before anything even his pride, which in this
time is a mans image. Linda, Willy's wife, appreciates him and loves him just as much as he does her ,by saying, "He drives seven hundred miles,
and when he gets there no one knows him any more, no one welcomes him. And what goes through a man's mind, driving seven hundred miles
home without having earned a cent? Why shouldn't he talk to himself? Why? When he has to go to Charley's and borrow fifty dollars a week and
pretend to me that it's his pay? How long can that go on? How long? You see what I'm sitting here and waiting for? And you tell me he has no
character? The man who never worked a day but for your benefit? When does he get the medal for that?.." (Miller 57) Some people such as Terry
Thompson think that the theme is "Miller's celebrated tragedy about an aging and mediocre salesman who will not grow up, but who will instead
remain an impulsive and "mercurial" boy groping ineffectually for success in a world that pays him no heed (Miller 12). And that symbol is facial
hair––who has it and who does not." (Thompson) In this theme Willy is put against his brother in many aspects. Ben his older brother is a successful
man with plenty of money and "facial hair which shows his maturity" (Thompson) as Willy has none of these things. In this case Willy is used to

Daisy Miller Essay
In Daisy Miller, James sets about to study in detail his story's namesake. What he discovers is the young, beautiful girl is untainted by European
prejudices: unlike the male protagonist, Frederick Winterbourne. In the opening scene of his story, James depicts in vivid detail the Swiss landscape
of Vevey with its large lake, glittering in the background. There seems in James's florid description to be a hint of nostalgia for a bygone time, and this
is reflected in him comparing and contrasting the numerous tourist hotels that line the lake. It would be in one of those hotels (to be precise the Trois
Couronnes) that Winterbourne would encounter, first, Randolph Miller and, a moment later, his charming sister, Daisy. Like Maise in James's

There is, however, the danger, especially in Europe, men will misinterpret her friendliness for something else– sexual availability. It is this
misinterpretation by European society that will ultimately lead to her tragic demise.
Prior to this happening, Miss Miller and Winterbourne discuss, among other things, a trip to the ChГўteau de Chillon. It would be there in that ancient
castle, they would walk and talk freely away from prying eyes. Even so, this sojourn is dependent on whether her courier, Eugenio, will stay behind
with Mrs Miller and Randolph, and it is precisely his appearance towards the end of their conversation that will lead to a misinterpretation by Eugenio
of Winterbourne's true intentions. He believes Winterbourne may present a threat to the younggirl's reputation: although that is furthest from the case in
the young man's mind. For instance, when Winterbourne mentions his aunt, Mrs Costello, to Miss Miller, he reiterates his intentions are good by
suggesting, she would be happy to meet her in addition to confirming her nephew's moral conduct.
Later, when Frederick tells Mrs Costello about the beautiful girl, the old woman is horrified to be involved with those pedestrian people – the Millers. It
is precisely her ability to judge people of their societal worth; Winterbourne hopes to utilise in order to validate his high opinion of the young

Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller
In the play, Death of A Salesman, Arthur Miller depicts the dissolution of the American family, as well as the decline of the prosperous lifestyles that
defined past generations, illustrating the theme of American decadence. From page one, the idea is set in motion by Miller that "the mighty have
fallen"; that society clearly is no longer a place of opportunity. In this play, Miller puts forward the idea that opportunities of past generations in areas
such as education and vocation are now nonexistent. A new society is being defined by Miller and his play illustrates a complete rework of
contemporary America. However, Miller is not just able to define a new society on his own. As with other Arthur Miller plays, the characters presented

He had an opportunity for schooling" (93). As shown, the characters in this play either avoided schooling, or they did not have any interest, a specific
contrast with ideas of the past, further establishing Miller's theme of decadence in America. Additionally, another part of Miller's plan to establish his
theme of decadence in education is through Biff's vocalizations. As with Willy, the character Biff is parallel to aconcept in this play. However, Biff in
this play is the opposite of his father Willy. In this play, Biff represents the malignity of Miller's American society. For example, on the issue of
education, Biff is very vocal and speaks on the lack of importance of education "the class came right before practice, see, and I didn't go" (118). This
vocalization once again pushes the idea home that America has wound up in a period of decadence. Finally, the last way Miller promotes his
dissipation of America is through the issue of individuality. During America's so–called glory days, one of the greatest defining traits of society was the
feeling of individuality. Many articles during the early 20th Century focused on the idea that in our culture, anybody could make a name for their self
and become a true individual among the crowd. However, while this sense of individuality was important at the time, it clearly did not

With the Death of a Salesman during the winter of 1949 on Broadway, Arthur Miller began to live as a playwright who has since been called one of

Transference: Revealing True Thoughts While reading Death of a Salesman, many readers become intrigued with the relationships of the Loman
family. One relationship in particular is Willy and his son, Biff 's. In the play, Death of a Salesman, written by Arthur Miller, Willy Loman exemplifies
the psychological theory of transference onto his son, Biff, because he is unable to accept his own reality. There is an underlying meaning to the
behavior of these two characters. The topics of transference, communication, and how a parent 's infidelity affects their children show how this
statement is proven to be true. Arthur Miller 's own life also contributes greatly to the father–son relationship within this literary work as well.
Transference is a large part of this play: it is a transference of Willy 's feelings of himself onto Biff. As defined by Psychiatrist Mark Dombeck:
Transference is a simple appearing idea that has to do with the way people understand one another and form relationships with one another. As its
name suggests, it involves the idea of transferring something from one place to another. What is being transferred in this case is an understanding of a
person. Where it is being transferred to is onto another person. When transference is occurring, basically what is happening is that we are trying to
understand someone (usually someone we don 't know very well) by making an assumption that they are similar to someone else, and will thus feel and

Looking at all of those characters individually, it is tough to pinpoint if Miller believes in one, all, or a combination of those views. Fortunately, it
becomes clearer in the introduction written by Christopher Bigsby. Insightful in his analysis of the play, Bigsby explains that "Death of a Salesman is
not an attack on American values. It is, however, an exploration of the betrayal of those values and the cost of this in human terms" (Bigsby
XXIII). To put it more simply, Miller's view of the American dream (A dream where equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through
hard work, determination, and initiative) is that it serves more as a misrepresented societal norm, than a guide to lifelong happiness. Looking at the
work as a whole, he shows that more often than not, the theory of the American dream is not aligned with the reality of an American life.
Considering each character individually, it is obvious that Miller wanted to make a point that dreams are whatever we want them to be. The
American dream is more or less just an outline or blueprint, and the individual determines the specific goals they themselves would like to achieve.
Such thoughts applied to all characters in the play, Miller's most extreme case being Willy Loman. A working man, a husband, and a father of two,
Willy was traditional in his belief that a man in America could be prosperous and successful, but only if he was viewed

Arthur Miller Essay Writing
Arthur Miller was best known for his play that he wrote which made it to Broadway, but his other works may have been some of the most
electrifying stories from this era. Arthur Miller was born in Harlem, New York on October 17th, 1915. His family lost nearly everything they had in
the stock market crash of 1929, however Arthur Miller attended the University of Michigan to study journalism in 1929 ("Arthur Miller" 1). While he
attended Michigan, he was the night editor of the student paper, the "Michigan Daily". Arthur Miller is best known for writing radio plays,
screenplays, short stories, and novels (1). While in college, Miller won several awards including the "AveryHopwood Award" for the first play he
wrote, No Villain. After college, Arthur Miller moved back home to begin his career in playwriting. Arthur Miller's writings defied his readers by
being fearless in his stories that he wrote. Miller worked very hard to get the best information for his stories. One example was The Crucible, this was
about Joe McCarthy and his communist hunts (1). Miller wrote about this and got down to the last detail. Miller was even blacklisted, which
prevented him from working in theaters and for movie companies, this was soon reversed however, as it was unnecessary (3).
One way in which Arthur Miller influenced other writers in his era was by pushing the limits for awards and best stories. His play Death of a
Salesman was a hit in 1947 and pushed Broadway plays to beat his works.

Integrity In The Crucible By Arthur Miller

Honesty and a sense of morality is integrity; and John proctor showed his integrity in the last two acts in all its glory. In act two, Proctor tells Mary

Arthur Miller As A Tragic Hero
Arthur Miller once said, "Theatre is so endlessly fascinating because it's so accidental. It's so much like life." For years, a playwright's goal was to
make the stage a place to cultivate and create life as it is. The public's thirst for raw, bona fide literature was quenched when Arthur Miller wrote
plays "so much like life" (Miller) itself. He did not find perfection in perfect, but in the imperfect. Psychology, Art, and History, are not only found
within the text, but they are intertwined with every character's objective and subtext. Arthur Miller is the best playwright, not only for molding a
character's chase for the American Dream, but he has written a revolutionary view on female characters, and has found the beauty in the tragic hero.
Arthur Miller was born on October 17, 1915 in Harlem, New York. When he graduated from the University of Michigan, Arthur Miller went back east
and began his career in playwriting. After The Man Who Has All the Luck, hisplay with no success, Arthur Miller finally had a breakthrough with the
play, All My Sons. He continued to write Death of a Salesman, which got him his first Tony for "Best Play" and has won awards for "Best Revival on
the Broadway stage". Death of a Salesman shined a light on the American Dream as a false myth constructed around materialism. In addition to his
other plays, The Crucible became subject to government criticism because it supposedly was an allegory to McCarthyism. The government intervened,

Examples Of Realism In Daisy Miller
"Psychological Realism in "Daisy Miller"
Written by Henry James, "Daisy Miller" is a novella that first appeared in Cornhill magazine in 1878 and later published in 1879. The novella narrates
the courtship of a young beautiful American girl called Daisy Miller by Winterbourne, a sophisticated young American–turned European man, whose
efforts to win her heart has been derailed by Daisy Miller's flirtatiousness and care–free life, which has been frowned upon by the community in Geneva
and Rome. This fictional story shows a noticeable change from social realism to psychological realism, which is regarded as more nuanced (Cokal).

And while the author chooses the protagonist's name to be the title of his novella, he makes Winterbourne be the first person narrator. While this is
undeniable, it is true that Daisy has been psychologized and that the function of the girl Daisy is to act as a plot device and a representation of the
American innocence in Europe. According to Ohmann, "James began writing with one attitude towards his heroine and concluded with a second and
different attitude towards her"(2). What Ohmann is trying to say is that Daisy is depicted as an innocent, flirtatious young woman, mostly unmindful
of her society's degree of judgment, which is a reflection of an emerging American class. In his description of "Daisy Miller" novella, Johnson states
that "a compelling feminist counter–narrative of American womanhood defined by freedom despite social constraints" (41). In the text, it is evident
that while the characters of female gender are still confined within particular social confinement and Daisy is punished with death. Johnson adds that
"her moments of defiance linger long after the sting of her death subsides." ( 42) This is witnessed long after Daisy's death when Fredrick
Winterbourne comes to the realization that "he had done her injustice" (James 83) because he had "lived too long in foreign parts"(James

Intro
Death of a Salesman is a play written in 1949 by Arthur Miller, the man who would later go on to write the Crucible. Arthur Miller based the
character of Willy Loman off of his uncle, who was a traveling salesman and felt competitive with his own sons towards Arthur and his own brother.
After bumping into Arthur in Boston, Manny shortly committed suicide. In his life, Arthur had known three people who had committed suicide and
two of those were traveling salesman. Arthur was so passionate about this play that he had finished Act 1 in only one day, and Act 2 was finished six
weeks later ("Death of a Salesman: Study Guide."). This play, considered by many to be one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, has featured on

Miller's father owned a women's clothing company and during the Depression, he lost his business, and their family moved to Brooklyn. After high
school Miller worked at a bunch of different jobs in order to save money for college. He attended the University of Michigan and spent a
significant amount of those four years learning to write and creating plays and his first was called No Villain. In 1940, he married Mary Grace
Slattery and they had two children, Jane and Robert. After he received his degree, he joined the Federal Theater Project in New York City (Galvin).
His first Broadway play, The Man Who Had All the Luck, opened in 1944 and was a failure, but his next play, All My Sons, was extremely
successful. Only two years after the success of All My Sons, Miller came out with his most famous and well–respected work, Death of a Salesman.
This play won him both a Pulitzer Prize and a Drama Critics Circle Award, and ran for more than 700 performances. Within a short while, it had been
translated into over a dozen languages and had made Miller a millionaire. Miller began work on his next major play, the Crucible. The Crucible was
set in Salem during the witch–hunts of the late 17th century, but was also based off of McCarthyism in the 1950s. After Miller divorced Slattery, he

contempt of Congress for his refusal to identify writers believed to hold Communist sympathies. The following year, the United States Court of Appeals
overturned the conviction. A difficult time in his life, Miller ended hismarriage with actress Marilyn Monroe in 1960. Miller finally married

Names In The Crucible By Arthur Miller
Names. They are our whole identity. They determine who we are for our whole life. And in The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, he mentions a lot
about names. I think he is trying to teach his audience that names mean and represent large amounts of power and dignity and also reputation. This is
shown perfectly when Parris is talking to Abigail and says "There is a faction that is sworn to drive me from my pulpit"(1026). Characters are often
seen throughout the play defending their own names, crying out names, listing names, and signing names. All in an attempt to protect their power and
dignity. Arthur Miller also made the names a big part of this play to help the readers develop a stronger emotional attachment towards the characters.

Not negative and upsetting things. And this is demonstrated perfectly in Act 1, pages 1024–1027 when Reverend Parris is watching Abigail, Tituba
and the other girls dancing naked around a fire in the woods. After Parris discovered them he then left out the details of what he actually saw when
asked about it later in the play. This shows that he was trying to protect his dignity and reputation as a Reverend. A follower of God. Parris then
turned to Abigail with wide eyes and said "There is a faction that is sworn to drive me from my pulpit"(1026). After hearing about Abigail's
actions, Goody Proctor was very upset with her as well. And kicked her out of the house and fired her in an attempt to protect her name and
reputation in the community. She did not want to be known by others as someone who hires people accused of conjuring spirits. Along with Goody
Proctor and Parris, Abigail too was attempting to protect her own name. She was caught lying about what she was doing and proceed to say to
Proctor "...I never knew the lying lessons I was taught" (1032). This proves she was lying in an attempt to protect her name and reputation as a pure

Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller
The play "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller is about the loss of personality as well as a man's incapability to admit the change in himself and
society. The play is a montage of memories, confrontations, dreams, and arguments that all make up the last 24 hours of Willy Loman's daily life. The
author uses the Loman's family that comprises of Willy, Linda, Happy, and Biff to construct a constant cycle of contraction, denial, and order versus
disorder.
Willy was aware of both his family and social responsibilities and never lost sight of what society expected of him–– even after living a tortured life.
Willy Loman had two mentors in life, a fellow salesman and his brother Ben who motivated him to achieve his dreams in life. The success of his
mentors led him to create a distorted value system that he later passed to his two sons (Hays &Kent, pp. 4). His two son's Biff and Happy were
constantly affected by Willy's expectations in life. Although the play emphases on the psychological damage imposed on Biff, it also showed that
Happy suffered due to his father's beliefs and attitudes. Linda, Willy's wife, although tries her best to be a perfect mother, goes to conflicting lengths
to encourage her husband to succeed in his daily endeavors despite the challenges. She does this in times of crisis and their daily lives placing their
son's reputation to a position of less important value.
Willy Loman and his son Biff were old–fashioned since they were from the same social niche.

The Crucible By Arthur Miller
Unbalance Through The Centuries
In Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, the author reflects the persecution of communists in America in the 1950's through a recount of the Salem witch
trials. It is often presumed that Miller based his drama directly off of events that were particularly prevalent in the years surrounding the publication of
The Crucible– which was released in the year 1953, towards the conclusion of the Korean War. Although there was not a literal witch hunt occurring
during this time period, America was in a state of paranoia due to an enemy that was seemingly even more terrifying than witches: this time, America
was looking for communists to burn at the stake. With heavy influences, such as Senator Joseph McCarthy weighing on him, Miller wrote about the
historic Salem witch trials to create a juxtaposition to the anti–communist delirium that was consuming America in the era in which he lived. By
highlighting the off–balance nature of order and personal freedoms within a society, Arthur Miller was able to communicate a timeless message, that is
applicable throughout American history, and is still relevant in the twenty–first century. He emphasizes the necessary sacrifice every individual is
forced to make as a means of maintaining our community, as well as the implications, both positive and negative, that come along with doing so.

personality. His goal was to die a man that had all of these things, and he ends up killing himself in the end. Miller's goal was to "take the audience
on an internal journey through the mind, memories, fears, anxieties of his central character." "Death of A Salesman" has been very popular for
over a decade, performed internationally, and was even produced into movies (Kristofoletti). Many people remember this play because of how
inspiring it was, also because it did not compare to any other of the ones he had ever written.Arthur Miller's second best play was "The Crucible"
which premiered in 1953. This play was definitely harder for Miller to write. He took his time on this and wrote it in twelve months. It was a
reflection of the Salem Witch Trials that he read about during his time. He found his subject after reading "W. Upham's 1867 two–volume study of the
1692 Salem witch trials" and wrote it after "watching the filming of the new movie of 'The Crucible'". This novel was about the people of Salem, how
they felt, and what was

Symbolism In The Crucible By Arthur Miller
Arthur Miller is easily one of the most complex modern writers. Crucible, for example, is a layered bean–dip of meaning and symbolism. At first
glance, it a story mocking and analyzing the individual human motives behind a dark piece of history. Upon closer look The Crucible is a criticism of
the hysteria and mod mentality surrounding the persecution of communists during the Cold War. Death of a Salesman analyzes the American Dream in
modern culture. A family attempts to uphold outdated values through modern means and the result is disastrous. Lorraine Hansberry explains the
predicament thusly: "Something has indeed gone wrong with at least part of the American dream, and Willy Loman is the victim of the detour.... His
predicament in a New... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These stockings symbolize the individual longings and shortcomings of the humans in search of the American dream. Linda sits at the table
mending her stockings and Willy becomes angry saying he would buy her new ones. However, the audience and Biff discover that Willy gave the
stockings to his mistress. For Biff the stockings symbolize an end to parental fairytale marriage. In a way they set Biff over the edge and put the
notion in his head that his father can lie. If Willy can lie about his intentions and promises, he could lie about a lot. It is the beginning of the
deflation in Biff's ego and opens his eyes to what Willy really is. The stockings are also a symbol of Willy's knowledge of his failure. "Because
Willy gave stockings to other women while Linda sat at home mending hers, the stockings were a material signifier of Willy's sexual guilt and his
failure to provide for his family as well as he thought he should" (Murphy). On some level, Willy knew he wasn't all he cracked himself up to be.
By giving the stockings to the other woman, Willy is acknowledging his inability to provide sufficiently for his family. Even years later, Willy is
still dealing with the ramifications of his failures. "WILLY: Will you stop mending stockings? At least while I'm in the house. It gets me nervous. I
can't tell you. Please" (Miller, Pg. 75). Years after Biff discovers Willy's shortcomings, stockings still remind Willy of that day and his failures. The
stockings serve as a reminder and symbol of Willy's inaptitude and the end of Biff's life under his father's influence. The stockings point out yet another
flaw in the American

The Crucible by Arthur Miller Essay
While reading three articles about the play called "The Crucible" I noticed many interesting facts. Many questions as well came to mind. The main
question was "What was the Arthur purpose for writing The Crucible"? Well let's start of by saying Arthur Miller was a extremely American play

at the Martin Beck. This occurred in the year of 1953. The play was called The Crucible. Was The Crucible even one of his best places? Well it was
yet one of his best second plays. What were the events of the play of Miller had done? The event of the play had to do with the events that took place

He used Salem Witch trials as a metaphor to get Attention towards the tragedies ofMcCarthyism publicities. Miller uses allegory in his play to show
the similarities of one historical period to another. In the 1950s everyone wanted freedom, mean while during the Salem witch was the trials of
religions was what life was all about. In both time periods people were scared they didn't want to be familiar with some one that could be communist
or a none Christian.
There for Miller wasn't only trying to send a message to McCarthy but also, to many other people. This shows the fact that
" When The Crucible was first produced, McCarthy cronies singled out members in the theater and in holly wood as leftists and communist
sympathizers needed, many critics and audience members, and even McCarthy himself, pointed the finger at miller as a spearheading his own attack
against what was the perceived to be very core American values". According to all this it proves the fact of how miller felt.
"Miller himself said that once he was blacklisted as a communist by the us government, people with whom he would have chatted on the street
suddenly turned a suspicious eye on him". A lot of people around miller were going against him in a very cruel way, McCarthy himself signed an
attack towards miller.
This play had a lot to do with certain century's and time periods. " As the period of its creation early 50's would suggest, however,

From the interim of Arthur Miller's birth and death, he wrote some of America's greatest plays which are known all around the world. This world renowned screenwriter and playwright is arguably considered the best playwright of the 20th century. We start our journey here on October 17, 1915 in Harlem, New York where Miller was born. Arther Miller was the son of Isidore and Augusta, a Polish and Jewish Immigrant family who owned a flourishing manufacturing business. The miller family got hit hard during the Wall Street Crash of 1929 nearly losing everything. Arther Miller worked hard after he graduated high school, so he would be able to pay for his collage tuition at the University of Michigan. It was at Michigan that he wrote his first play, No Villain. This play won him the school's Avery Hopwood Award and sparked the beginning of his successful career as a playwright. The beginning of Miller's playwright career came out with a boom with, All My Sons, which debuted on Broadway in 1947. This play won Miller his first of many Tony Awards. His next... McCarthyism is the act of making false accusations without showing the proper evidence. Miller denied to follow any of the committee's orders. Again in 1957, Brooks Atkinson wrote about millers stand:"He refused to be an informer. He refused to turn his private conscience over to administration by the state. He has accordingly been found in contempt of Congress. That is the measure of the man who has written these high–minded plays." • 3. Arthur Miller Influence On The Crucible In the book The Crucible by Arthur Miller the context sets up the whole plot of the story. Much like the book The Scarlet Letter the setting is in the north during early colonization time this was also the time of Puritanism, Puritans believed in being pure and Godly. Preachers were held on a pedestal and citizens were looked at through a magnifying glass. Throughout The Crucible you begin to learn of the strong sense of Christianity there; you were condemned if you did not go to church every Sunday, much like John Proctor. The Crucible is based around a true story, witch hunting during this time period was an actual occurrence. Nineteen people were actually accused and hung or stoned in Salem, Massachusetts for witchcraft. The religious aspect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Miller displays people saying false things to protect themselves, even if it means killing another person who is innocent. Jealousy, greed and grudges was shown during the content of The Crucible. Miller creates this image of Americans that is atrocious, all while using a true story. Miller wrote this book in the in 1950's, during the time of the "communist witch hunt" Miller was even a victim of this, he was questioned during the process. His books tended to lean to the more political side, he used a historical reference to bring awareness to his modern times issues, such as the "communist witch hunt" and the characters of past and modern Americans. McCarthyism was an occurrence that took place in the time period of Miller. Wisconsin Senator Joseph McCarthy began multiple hearings and investigation into communism in the United States government. His idea of wiping out all communist in America spreaded like a wildfire, so much so that he won reelection. The similarity between The Crucible and the "communist witch hunt" is uncanny. There is much symbolism in the book that relates back to McCarthyism, such as the girls in the book making false claims without having any proof. • 4. New Criticism Of Daisy Miller In Henry James's "novella," his heroine: Daisy Miller is a young woman who dared to challenge the old guard. Her nature, though rebellious was pure and innocent, and her death was in itself her last rebellion. She died a martyr for a cause in which she believed: the freedom of women. She was the first of a new generation of independent women, women outside of the control of the Mrs. Walkers of the world: women who were free. Alive Daisy was bound by the chains of society, in death she was let loose from her bindings. Her death was not an example of failure, it was the greatest gift she could have given. In life, Daisy was looked at as a woman of ill repute by the socialites who mattered in Europe, but in death, she superseded this role, and became something much more: a symbol of rebellion. In this way Daisy's death challenged the social order. By loosing her life, she showed just how powerful a woman could be. Using a lens of New Historicism, the reader is able to recognize much more from the behavior of Daisy in contrast to using a lens submerged in today's mentality. From an eye born and raised in the twenty–first century, one really cannot see what all the fuss was about. She just appears to be a normal (albeit very rich) girl, who goes about her life acting ... • 5. The Crucible by Arthur Miller The performance of Arthur Millers drama, The Crucible, put on by the WolfPack Players is one that has taken a fair bit of polishing to go from an average high school show, to a great show; the director, Patrica Scarborough, can certainly attest to such a bold claim. While we were held back by petty issues such as lines, we were, as a company, able to pull it together, just in time for opening. I can honestly say, in my heart, that this show could have gone better. In no way am I marking this a shameful show, nay, in my opinion, the show is quite good. I, for one, love the cast that had been assigned to perform this drama. But the basic act of line memorization had bogged us down, and I primarily attribute that to the language of Arthur Miller's piece; The Crucible is indeed a heavy show, the Director had announced to us that many times before. Even for myself, The Crucible is a dense, heavy story. From my transition from the auditions to the performance, I can say that personal growth had happened, not continuously, but in small spurts. At the audition, I had felt like this wasn't really my show. That feeling I had made me nervous and uncomfortable about auditioning, but I had decided to keep at it; I put on a straight face and acted happy to be there, auditioning, even though I was unsure about the show. I had learned, later on, that even if insecurity strikes during an audition, that its always better to act like its not there at all. Keeping a straight face, as opposed to ... • 8. Death of Salesman by Arthur Miller In the play Death of a Salesman by the playwright Arthur Miller, the use of names is significant to the characters themselves. Many playwrights and authors use names in their works to make a connection between the reader and the main idea of their work. Arthur Miller uses names in this play extraordinarily. Not only does Miller use the names to get readers to correlate them with the main idea of the play, but he also uses names to provide some irony to the play. Miller uses the meanings of some of the names to tie in the characteristics of the characters. Willy, the protagonist of Miller's play, has a brother, Ben. • 9. The Crucible By Arthur Miller Lucifer, Satan or his common name, the devil. From an English perspective, he is the first antagonist. In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, the Devil is the main cause of conflict. He is the root of Evil. Now the reaction to devilish behavior varies from person to person, possibly even society to society. The Puritan society combats evil doing with actions that could be considered worse than the Devil 's worst of deeds. This is demonstrated by Reverend Hale, whose importance starts initially as a figurehead of judgment, and his influence of judgment slowly dwindles. Another proof of imperfection in the Puritan society is the article McCarthyism. It projects the same sickening goose chase that ruins the lives of harmless people. Abigail is the ultimate icon of the mockery that is the Salem witch trials. Her "encounters" with demons in the courtroom are borderline comedic. The puritans justify all decisions with the argument that all drastic measures are necessary to remove the demons within the townspeople, for the greater good. The concept of religion is obviously critical to the people of Salem, so it comes as no surprise that the initial reaction of evil is to call Reverend Hale for assistance. However, as time passes in Salem, Hale is disgusted with what has happened in Salem. Hale is totally aware of how blasphemous the results of the trials are. Miller writes, "Let you not mistake your duty as I mistook my own. I came into this village like a bridegroom to his beloved, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Before Miller and Kazan had even met, their childhood proved to be somewhat similar. • 12. The Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller A Dime a Dozen The Death of a Salesman is a tragedy written by playwright Arthur Miller and told in the third person limited view. The play involves four main characters, Biff, Happy, Linda, and Willy Loman, an ordinary family trying to live the American Dream. Throughout the play however, the family begins to show that through their endeavors to live the American Dream, they are only hurting their selves. The play begins by hinting at Willy's suicidal attempts as the play begins with Linda asking if he crashed the car asking, "You didn't smash the car did you?" (Miller 1183). This first line foreshadows Willy'ssuicide at the end of the play as it foreshadows that he is not completely sane. Subsequently, Biff and Happy Loman are introduced as Linda and Willy's two children. Biff has recently returned to his home, but his parents constantly criticize him for not having a good job. Willy and Biff do not get along, as Willy believes that Biff has failed him because he did not succeed in being wealthy and well known. Biff was the classic all American teenager in high school, being a star in football and admired by all his peers. Willy describes him saying, "I thank almighty God you're both built like Adonises." (Miller 1193). Willy builds his children up believing they are above everyone else which will eventually lead to problems later in their life. • 13. Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller Throughout the novel, Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, it is very evident that the author embodies his perceptions of the American Dream through his character's identity. We see how the life of an insignificant man unravels and creates chaos for his wife and eldest son Biff, while also seeing an unhealthy relationship develop between the two. Yet, despite the negative connotations that thenovel presents to its readers, Death of a Salesman can be interpreted as a rhapsody of human nature instead of a tragic chronicle. Within the pages of this infamous novel, we see that Miller develops the concepts of liberation, individualism, and the American Dream. Through these concepts, we see how Willy Loman, our protagonist and Biff Loman, our antagonist, struggle with the pressures of an American socio–cultural driven era. Firstly, the ideology of liberation is bluntly scattered within the pages written by Miller. From the personal description of Biff's younger years in high school to Willies ambition to become a wealthy salesman, the sense of wanting to achieve greatness is evidently present. We see that both of these characters are constantly attempting to remove the shackles of conformity through their efforts of wanting to leave a "thumbprint" for others to admire over time. Willies long life dream of wanting to be a successful sales man proves this statement; this character lives his entire life laboring to create a better future for his son and wife so that they could ... While it was heavily historically based, it was also based off of the times of current day America when the play was wrote. I've got to get some seeds, right away. Nothing's planted. I don't have a thing in the ground," (Pg. 122). His urgency to buy seeds expressed much more than the want to have plants. In fact, these seeds hold a completely different meaning than the traditional sense and use of seeds. This partially can be due to the fact that he has yet made his peace in life before he takes his own life. In fact, it is possible that when he said there was nothing planted yet, he was actually referring to his children, as they do not have steady jobs or lives. He has often expressed worry over the fact that his children have done very little to achieve anything in life. The seeds represent his children, and the plants that they grow into represent would they could become. Willy is often seen as disappointed by his boy and is often described through an allusion, "The mythological allusion comes midway through the first act, during one of Willy 's rose–tinted recollections of the family 's past, when his sons were young and all things were possible," (Thompson). • 17. Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller Arthur Miller's play titled "Death of a Salesman" offers a plethora of morals pertaining to the human condition. One moral, shown in Aesop's fable "The Peacock and Juno", pertains to that one should be content with that of which they are given, for one cannot be the best at everything. In Death of a Salesman there is, without a doubt, a paucity of content and happiness within the Loman family. But what does it mean to truly be content? Aesop's fable "The Peacock and Juno", as the name suggests, describes a peacock approaching the Goddess Juno, and he asks her to provide him "the voice of a nightingale", which would be ancillary to his other various attractions. When Juno refuses, the beautifully feathered creature is confused, for he is, after all, her favorite bird. She responds to his confusion with "Be content in your lot; one cannot be first in everything" (Aesop). The moral of this short fable is clearly spoken in Juno's quote. Simply put, the moral is "be content with what you have, for you cannot be the best at everything". Comparable to the Peacock, Arthur Miller's Willy Loman appears to his superior, Howard, requesting both an increase in salary, and better working locations in New York, rather than his current in Boston. Willy originally asks to work at a wage of $65 a week, justifying his requests with the fact that "[t]he kids are all grown up", and that he is "just a little tired" (Miller 79). Unfortunately, Willy Loman's ideals become outgrown as the technological age develops. Due to the protagonist's motivations, he represents the tragic hero in a few ways. Willy Loman's career is based off of his belief in the American dream. He feels that if he is well–liked, it will lead to profitable sales. Loman also has grand delusions that the American dream includes athletic sons, a housewife and a home that is paid for. Charley tells Willy in act two, "The only thing you got in this world is what you can sell. And the funny thing is that you 're a salesman, and you don 't know that" (Meyer 1757). The audience would believe that Willy Loman is motivated by money because he is a salesman, but this is not his true drive. In the end, Willy comes to the conclusion that the best way to help his sons live a good life, would be to kill himself so they can collect from his insurance. There are many other themes, but this one is very important, because in the play no one is safe from being accused of witchcraft. The conflict is when Abigail and her group of girls lie in the court room and make unjust accusations about people, because of money, land, and or relationship issues. This connects to the universal theme, because these lies will make the people being accused, either be put in jail or hung. This quote means, that Abigail believes it felt like Goody Proctor's bad spirit came upon her, because Elizabeth is angry at Abigail for getting together with John. Abigail states that it was Goody Proctor, because she says, "Goody Proctor always kept poppets" (Miller 190). She says this, because if Elizabeth gets accused of witchcraft, she will be hung and then Abigail will be able to get Proctor. This consociates with the universal theme, in a way where Abigail will lie, just to get Proctor. The universal theme of "lying is apart of everyone's nature," is evident quite often in, The Crucible. The reason being, is most people want more land, some are prideful, meaning they will lie to make sure people don't think less of them. • 25. Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller In the play, Death of A Salesman, Arthur Miller depicts the dissolution of the American family, as well as the decline of the prosperous lifestyles that defined past generations, illustrating the theme of American decadence. From page one, the idea is set in motion by Miller that "the mighty have fallen"; that society clearly is no longer a place of opportunity. In this play, Miller puts forward the idea that opportunities of past generations in areas such as education and vocation are now nonexistent. A new society is being defined by Miller and his play illustrates a complete rework of contemporary America. However, Miller is not just able to define a new society on his own. As with other Arthur Miller plays, the characters presented in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He had an opportunity for schooling" (93). As shown, the characters in this play either avoided schooling, or they did not have any interest, a specific contrast with ideas of the past, further establishing Miller's theme of decadence in America. Additionally, another part of Miller's plan to establish his theme of decadence in education is through Biff's vocalizations. As with Willy, the character Biff is parallel to aconcept in this play. However, Biff in this play is the opposite of his father Willy. In this play, Biff represents the malignity of Miller's American society. For example, on the issue of education, Biff is very vocal and speaks on the lack of importance of education "the class came right before practice, see, and I didn't go" (118). This vocalization once again pushes the idea home that America has wound up in a period of decadence. Finally, the last way Miller promotes his dissipation of America is through the issue of individuality. During America's so–called glory days, one of the greatest defining traits of society was the feeling of individuality. Many articles during the early 20th Century focused on the idea that in our culture, anybody could make a name for their self and become a true individual among the crowd. Essay on Authur Miller With the Death of a Salesman during the winter of 1949 on Broadway, Arthur Miller began to live as a playwright who has since been called one of this century's three great American dramatists. And who could forget the film The Misfits and the dramatic special Playing for Time. Death of a Salesman was not Arthur Miller's first success on Broadway. • 27. Death Of A Salesman, By Arthur Miller Transference: Revealing True Thoughts While reading Death of a Salesman, many readers become intrigued with the relationships of the Loman family. One relationship in particular is Willy and his son, Biff 's. In the play, Death of a Salesman, written by Arthur Miller, Willy Loman exemplifies the psychological theory of transference onto his son, Biff, because he is unable to accept his own reality. There is an underlying meaning to the behavior of these two characters. The topics of transference, communication, and how a parent 's infidelity affects their children show how this statement is proven to be true. Arthur Miller 's own life also contributes greatly to the father–son relationship within this literary work as well. Transference is a large part of this play: it is a transference of Willy 's feelings of himself onto Biff. As defined by Psychiatrist Mark Dombeck: Transference is a simple appearing idea that has to do with the way people understand one another and form relationships with one another. As its name suggests, it involves the idea of transferring something from one place to another. What is being transferred in this case is an understanding of a person. Where it is being transferred to is onto another person. When transference is occurring, basically what is happening is that we are trying to understand someone (usually someone we don 't know very well) by making an assumption that they are similar to someone else, and will thus feel and behave in ... People pack up their lives and families to travel to American soil to try at a chance of a better life, and in doing so, they too venture on a path to achieving this so commonly understood "American Dream." Looking at all of those characters individually, it is tough to pinpoint if Miller believes in one, all, or a combination of those views. Fortunately, it becomes clearer in the introduction written by Christopher Bigsby. Insightful in his analysis of the play, Bigsby explains that "Death of a Salesman is not an attack on American values. It is, however, an exploration of the betrayal of those values and the cost of this in human terms" (Bigsby XXIII). To put it more simply, Miller's view of the American dream (A dream where equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative) is that it serves more as a misrepresented societal norm, than a guide to lifelong happiness. Looking at the work as a whole, he shows that more often than not, the theory of the American dream is not aligned with the reality of an American life. Considering each character individually, it is obvious that Miller wanted to make a point that dreams are whatever we want them to be. The American dream is more or less just an outline or blueprint, and the individual determines the specific goals they themselves would like to achieve. Such thoughts applied to all characters in the play, Miller's most extreme case being Willy Loman. A working man, a husband, and a father of two, Willy was traditional in his belief that a man in America could be prosperous and successful, but only if he was viewed ... The public's thirst for raw, bona fide literature was quenched when Arthur Miller wrote plays "so much like life" (Miller) itself. He did not find perfection in perfect, but in the imperfect. Psychology, Art, and History, are not only found within the text, but they are intertwined with every character's objective and subtext. And while the author chooses the protagonist's name to be the title of his novella, he makes Winterbourne be the first person narrator. While this is undeniable, it is true that Daisy has been psychologized and that the function of the girl Daisy is to act as a plot device and a representation of the American innocence in Europe. According to Ohmann, "James began writing with one attitude towards his heroine and concluded with a second and different attitude towards her"(2). What Ohmann is trying to say is that Daisy is depicted as an innocent, flirtatious young woman, mostly unmindful of her society's degree of judgment, which is a reflection of an emerging American class. • 36. Death Of A Salesman By Arthur Miller The play "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller is about the loss of personality as well as a man's incapability to admit the change in himself and society. The play is a montage of memories, confrontations, dreams, and arguments that all make up the last 24 hours of Willy Loman's daily life. The author uses the Loman's family that comprises of Willy, Linda, Happy, and Biff to construct a constant cycle of contraction, denial, and order versus disorder. Willy was aware of both his family and social responsibilities and never lost sight of what society expected of him–– even after living a tortured life. Willy Loman had two mentors in life, a fellow salesman and his brother Ben who motivated him to achieve his dreams in life. The success of his mentors led him to create a distorted value system that he later passed to his two sons (Hays &Kent, pp. 4). His two son's Biff and Happy were constantly affected by Willy's expectations in life. Although the play emphases on the psychological damage imposed on Biff, it also showed that Happy suffered due to his father's beliefs and attitudes. Linda, Willy's wife, although tries her best to be a perfect mother, goes to conflicting lengths to encourage her husband to succeed in his daily endeavors despite the challenges. • 37. The Crucible By Arthur Miller Unbalance Through The Centuries In Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, the author reflects the persecution of communists in America in the 1950's through a recount of the Salem witch trials. It is often presumed that Miller based his drama directly off of events that were particularly prevalent in the years surrounding the publication of The Crucible– which was released in the year 1953, towards the conclusion of the Korean War. Although there was not a literal witch hunt occurring during this time period, America was in a state of paranoia due to an enemy that was seemingly even more terrifying than witches: this time, America was looking for communists to burn at the stake. With heavy influences, such as Senator Joseph McCarthy weighing on him, Miller wrote about the historic Salem witch trials to create a juxtaposition to the anti–communist delirium that was consuming America in the era in which he lived. By highlighting the off–balance nature of order and personal freedoms within a society, Arthur Miller was able to communicate a timeless message, that is applicable throughout American history, and is still relevant in the twenty–first century. He emphasizes the necessary sacrifice every individual is forced to make as a means of maintaining our community, as well as the implications, both positive and negative, that come along with doing so. If Willy can lie about his intentions and promises, he could lie about a lot. It is the beginning of the deflation in Biff's ego and opens his eyes to what Willy really is. The stockings are also a symbol of Willy's knowledge of his failure. "Because Willy gave stockings to other women while Linda sat at home mending hers, the stockings were a material signifier of Willy's sexual guilt and his failure to provide for his family as well as he thought he should" (Murphy). On some level, Willy knew he wasn't all he cracked himself up to be. By giving the stockings to the other woman, Willy is acknowledging his inability to provide sufficiently for his family. Even years later, Willy is still dealing with the ramifications of his failures. "WILLY: Will you stop mending stockings? At least while I'm in the house. It gets me nervous. I can't tell you.
