Intro
Death of a Salesman is a play written in 1949 by Arthur Miller, the man who would later go on to write the Crucible. Arthur Miller based the
character of Willy Loman off of his uncle, who was a traveling salesman and felt competitive with his own sons towards Arthur and his own brother.
After bumping into Arthur in Boston, Manny shortly committed suicide. In his life, Arthur had known three people who had committed suicide and
two of those were traveling salesman. Arthur was so passionate about this play that he had finished Act 1 in only one day, and Act 2 was finished six
weeks later ("Death of a Salesman: Study Guide."). This play, considered by many to be one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, has featured on

Miller's father owned a women's clothing company and during the Depression, he lost his business, and their family moved to Brooklyn. After high
school Miller worked at a bunch of different jobs in order to save money for college. He attended the University of Michigan and spent a
significant amount of those four years learning to write and creating plays and his first was called No Villain. In 1940, he married Mary Grace
Slattery and they had two children, Jane and Robert. After he received his degree, he joined the Federal Theater Project in New York City (Galvin).
His first Broadway play, The Man Who Had All the Luck, opened in 1944 and was a failure, but his next play, All My Sons, was extremely
successful. Only two years after the success of All My Sons, Miller came out with his most famous and well–respected work, Death of a Salesman.
This play won him both a Pulitzer Prize and a Drama Critics Circle Award, and ran for more than 700 performances. Within a short while, it had been
translated into over a dozen languages and had made Miller a millionaire. Miller began work on his next major play, the Crucible. The Crucible was
set in Salem during the witch–hunts of the late 17th century, but was also based off of McCarthyism in the 1950s. After Miller divorced Slattery, he
married Marilyn Monroe in 1956. In 1956 and 1957, Miller was subpoenaed by the House Un–American Activities Committee and was convicted of
contempt of Congress for his refusal to identify writers believed to hold Communist sympathies. The following year, the United States Court of Appeals
overturned the conviction. A difficult time in his life, Miller ended hismarriage with actress Marilyn Monroe in 1960. Miller finally married
photographer Inge Morath in 1962, with whom he lives in Connecticut. He and Inge had first a daughter, Rebecca. Then they had a son, Daniel, who

Analysis Of Arthur Miller 's Life
Since the beginning of theatre, there have been numerous playwrights who have made their attempt at greatness. Most have failed, some have had
minor success, and a slim few have succeeded. Arthur Miller was an inventive, determined playwright who made a lasting impression on theatre in the
20th century. He was a head–strong, willful individual who conquered obstacles when they presented themselves. Through a brief examination of
Arthur Miller's personal life, career as a playwright, and influence on theatre, it is clear to see that he was a very innovative and impactful individual
whose effects can still be seen today. Arthur Miller's life began on October 17, 1915 in Harlem, New York when he was born to Augusta and Isidore
Miller (Arthur Miller; Arthur Miller Biography). He belonged to a middle–upper class family and enjoyed the benefits of this social class as a young
boy. In the stock market crash of 1929, his life took a spin for the worse and his family lost nearly everything, leading him to live a much different
lifestyle as a teenager. However bleak his aspect on the world could've been after such a dramatic change, Miller didn't even slightly lose his ambition
to succeed in life, but rather gained momentum to accomplish his dreams. After graduating from high school, he labored in a warehouse to save up
money for college (Biography of Arthur Miller). The University of Michigan became Arthur Miller's new home for the next stage of his life. He

Arthur Miller Arthur Miller, in his plays, deals with the injustice of society's moral values and the characters who are vulnerable to its cruelty. A
good majority of these plays were very successful and earned numerous awards. According to Brooks Atkinson, a critic for the New York Times,
Miller's play Death of a Salesman was successful because the play "is so simple in style and so inevitable in theme that it scarcely seems like a thing
that has been written and acted. For Mr. Miller has looked with compassion into the hearts of some ordinary Americans and quietly transferred their
hopes and anguish to the theater" (Babusci 1261). This play, in 1949, received the Pulitzer Prize, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the

He "is one of society's victims, one of those "who landed in the ash can." As Miller explains it, society chews up Willy because he has broken "the
law which says a failure in society and in business has no right to live"" (Bloom, Modern Critical Interpretations: Arthur Miller's Death of a
Salesman 96). In Howard's office Willy recalls the memory of whom he considered a great salesman, Dave Singleman. He was well liked and
popular with his buyers, even to his death. Hundreds of salesman and buyers were at his funeral. Willy wanted to be just like this man, but...all the
buyers he once knew are dead, and all the new age buyers care about is getting a deal over and done with. There's no personality in it anymore. He
can't pay his insurance... "In brief glimses, Willy recognizes that he is a victim. After he is fired, he complains to Charley, "After all the highways
and the trains, and the appointments, and the years, you end up worth more dead than alive"" (Bloom, Modern Critical Interpretations: Arthur
Miller's Death of a Salesman 96). And his boss doesn't even care. During the scene in his office he is preoccupied with his "new toy" a wire recorder.

Theater Appreciation ARTHUR MILLER Of the list of American playwrights the one I thought I would find most interesting is Arthur Miller.
Being relatively familiar with some of his work I wanted to learn more about him. Through the research I have done I have been able to find some very
interesting information about Miller's work as well as his personal life. Arthur Miller was born in New York on October 17, 1915. His father, Isidore
Miller, was a ladies–wear manufacturer and shopkeeper whose business was ruined in the Great Depression. This obviously had a huge impact on the
family's financial situation which in turn had a strong influence on Miller. The family was forced to move to a small frame house in Brooklyn, which

Miller's work eventually made it to Broadway starting with The Man Who Had all the Luck in 1944. It closed after four performances. Three
years later he returned to Broadway producing All My Sons, the story of a factory owner who sells faulty aircraft parts during World War II. It
won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. This being his first major award, his work would continue to receive critical acclaim for years,
however there would still be ups and downs. Arthur Miller's work varied over the next several years. In 1944 Arthur toured Army camps to collect
background material for his screenplay The Story of GI Joe. Miller also wrote his first novel, Focus (1945), which was a story about anti–Semitism. In
1949 Miller's Death of a Salesman brought him international fame. This became probably one of his most well known pieces of work as well as a
major achievement of modern American theatre. Death of a Salesman is a story about the quest for the American Dream. The salesman, Willy
Loman, is a man of pride who is not the great success that he claims to be to his family and friends. Due to the postwar economic boom he looses his
job and goes into a downward spiral. He begins to hallucinate about significant events from his past and eventually he comes to the conclusion that he
is worth more dead than alive. Willy kills himself in his car, hoping that the insurance money will support his family

King Arthur Miller Biography Essay
Arthur Miller: An American Author Unique to the literary history of America, Arthur Miller's work shows significant impact upon the public and
the history of the country. On October 17, 1915, Augusta and Isidore and Augusta Miller welcomed their son, Arthur Miller, into the world.
Although Miller was born in Harlem, New York, his family moved to Brooklyn when Miller's father, Isidore, lost his clothing company. Initially, the
company provided the family with a considerable income, allowing them to afford luxuries such as a chauffeur and a summer home in Far
Rockaway. Leaving their spacious home in Harlem, the family found themselves in a rough Brooklyn neighborhood where suicides regularly
occurred. These surroundings and conditions, including the effects of the Depression, later made a great impact on Miller's work. As a teenager,
Miller attended Abraham Lincoln High School where he participated in the French Club, swim team, and football team. In order to save money for
college, he began his first job, delivering bread for a local bakery. Some of Miller's later jobs included trucking driving and...show more content...

Arthur Miller : The Greatest Writer And Writer
There are many writers in the world, but only Arthur Miller is considered the greatest playwright and writer. His life started pretty much like
everyone else. He grew up going to school and had the same experiences that most people did, except he was influenced by these experiences and
used them in his writing. He also used writing to promote his different beliefs. He was a writer who wrote with a purpose and actually helped
people learn. Arthur Miller is one of the greatest authors of all time, which is shown throughout his childhood, education, life, and his
accomplishments. He was born October 17,1915 in New York, New York, United States. Miller was one of the three children. His father was Isidore
Miller, a Polish immigrant who made a plentiful amount of money in the garment industry. His mother was Augusta (Barnett) Miller, she was a
schoolteacher. Miller had an older brother, Kermit, was more capable of doing things in school and was more athletic than Miller. Miller also had a
younger sister, Joan, that was their father's favorite child. Joan later became an actress and had a stage name, Joan Copeland. After Miller's father's
business fell through, they moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn, where Miller went to high school. When he attended high school in Brooklyn he lived
with relatives and family friends. These were the people that would be the inspiration for his drama. He eventually went to Abraham Lincoln High
School in New York and graduated 1932, he then took

Arthur Miller wrote many plays in his time, but one in particular, written in 1947 and directed in Beijing in 1983, was the "play that established
him as a great American playwright" called "Death of a Salesman". This play was about the difference between a New York family's life in reality
and what they dreamed it would be. An old man, by the name of Willy valued popularity and his friends way more than skills or even a real
personality. His goal was to die a man that had all of these things, and he ends up killing himself in the end. Miller's goal was to "take the audience
on an internal journey through the mind, memories, fears, anxieties of his central character." "Death of A Salesman" has been very popular for
over a decade, performed internationally, and was even produced into movies (Kristofoletti). Many people remember this play because of how
inspiring it was, also because it did not compare to any other of the ones he had ever written.Arthur Miller's second best play was "The Crucible"
which premiered in 1953. This play was definitely harder for Miller to write. He took his time on this and wrote it in twelve months. It was a
reflection of the Salem Witch Trials that he read about during his time. He found his subject after reading "W. Upham's 1867 two–volume study of the
1692 Salem witch trials" and wrote it after "watching the filming of the new movie of 'The Crucible'". This novel was about the people of Salem, how

To many people Arthur Miller is known for his role against communist accusations and using his writing to portray what has happened during
McCarthyism. From Miller's struggles as a child to his first big break as a playwright to his fight against the government, he has still been able to

Arthur Miller's Influence On Society
Arthur Miller and the Influences he Faced Arthur Miller was a twentieth century playwright. During the time Miller was writing these plays and
during his childhood, he was going through a hard time. As a young man, he was directly affected by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, The Great
Depression and the fear of communism that spread after the second World War. By living through all of these events, his work was greatly influenced
by them and took what he had learned in his life and turned them into successful plays. In his time, he wrote about everyday people with everyday
problems. In his works of Death of a Salesman, The Crucible and All My Sons, the common theme of lies and deceit are present. The Depression and

The play revolves around the information about faulty machine parts that John Keller withheld. Not only is this a lie that caused the death of
twenty–one pilots, but it also affects all the people in his life. In one specific instance, Joe is talking to George, who is his business partner's son.
"Keller: There are certain men in the world who rather see everybody hung before they'll take blame. You understand me, George?" (Miller, All My
Sons 48). This quote is important because it seems as if Joe is talking about himself. Joe let Steve take the blame for selling the defective engine
parts, which in turn completely ruins the Deever family. Miller provides a common theme of lies and deceit to show the great consequences that have
to be faced in life. It shows that lying is one of the worst things a man can do because it completely tears apart their

Arthur Miller Essay Writing
Arthur Miller was best known for his play that he wrote which made it to Broadway, but his other works may have been some of the most
electrifying stories from this era. Arthur Miller was born in Harlem, New York on October 17th, 1915. His family lost nearly everything they had in
the stock market crash of 1929, however Arthur Miller attended the University of Michigan to study journalism in 1929 ("Arthur Miller" 1). While he
attended Michigan, he was the night editor of the student paper, the "Michigan Daily". Arthur Miller is best known for writing radio plays,
screenplays, short stories, and novels (1). While in college, Miller won several awards including the "AveryHopwood Award" for the first play he
wrote, No Villain. After college, Arthur Miller moved back home to begin his career in playwriting. Arthur Miller's writings defied his readers by
being fearless in his stories that he wrote. Miller worked very hard to get the best information for his stories. One example was The Crucible, this was
about Joe McCarthy and his communist hunts (1). Miller wrote about this and got down to the last detail. Miller was even blacklisted, which
prevented him from working in theaters and for movie companies, this was soon reversed however, as it was unnecessary (3).
One way in which Arthur Miller influenced other writers in his era was by pushing the limits for awards and best stories. His play Death of a
Salesman was a hit in 1947 and pushed Broadway plays to beat his works.

Arthur Miller As A Dramatist
Arthur Miller(1915–2005) is regarded as one of the most important American playwrights of the 20th century and his work continues to be widely

The play won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for the best play in 1947and with this Arthur Miller became a known and established

canon because it constitutes his major theatrical achievement, displays his extra–ordinary skill in handling dramatic form, and presages even better
things yet to come from one of America's greatest dramatists". (Steven R.Centola, "All My Sons", in The Cambridge Companion to Arthur Miller,
(ed.), Christopher Bigsby, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1997.), p.51. The critical and commercial success of All My Sons proved to be
a turning point in the career of Arthur Miller because this established him as a dramatist in the theatre. After struggling for a long period to establish
himself as a dramatist, Arthur Miller was upset and there was a time when he had almost decided to quit writing plays and to shift over other career
for his livelihood. All My Sons was his last hope. Reflecting on his dissatisfaction with his achievement during the early phase of his career, Miller

Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller Essay
Death of A Salesman, written by Arthur Miller, is a play based on the turmoil within an average American family. Miller wrote Death of A Salesman
easily showcasing the elements of drama. I was easily able to follow the plot, identify with his characters, and picture the setting.
The main theme of the plot seemed to be Willy reaching for the "American Dream". Financial success, business success, outwardly perfect family,
revered by your peers, and in general respected by all. Early on in the play two things are evident to the reader; Willy's questionable mental status, and
his tumultuous relationship with his sons.
Willy is apparently suffering from some sort of mental or emotional issues. These issues are causing...show more content...
Happy mislead is family into thinking his job position was higher than is actually was, and Biff could not settle down and stick with a job.
Willy's fear of change and evolvement is evident in his resentment of the apartments and in his reaction to the recorder of Mr. Wagner's. He is also
unable to come to terms with his own advancing years as a salesman. He only goes to Mr. Wagner to ask for a job strictly in New York when Linda
insists. What he sees as valuable experience others see as obsolete. Willy longs for the days when the boys revered him and they were pals.
Scott Foll states the driving point of plot is conflict (1182). This play definitely has the ultimate conflict. That is simply, family. Conflict with Willy
and Biff, Willy with himself, and Linda with her sons. For me the turning climactic point is when while talking with Ben, Willy believes he can regain
what he lost years ago with Biff by ending his life. He thinks the twenty–thousand from the insurance money will fix it all. I suppose the resolution in
this play was Willy's death. Although I do not imagine this could truly be resolution for the remaining family.
Characterization seemed to be the most well developed element of the play. The patriarch of the family, Willy Loman was portrayed as the tragic
hero. I believe his character did indeed possess some character flaws that inevitably led to his death. However, I agree with

In the period immediately following the end of World War II, American theater was transformed by the work of playwright Arthur Miller. Profoundly
influenced by the Depression and the war that immediately followed it, Miller tapped into a sense of dissatisfaction and unrest within the greater
American psyche. His probing dramas proved to be both the conscience and redemption of the times, allowing people an honest view of the direction
the country had taken.
Arthur Miller was born in Manhattan in 1915 to Jewish immigrant parents. By 1928, the family had moved to Brooklyn, after their garment

His insight into the psychology of desperation and his ability to create stories that express the deepest meanings of struggle, have made him one of the

theater.
B. Before analysing Miller's view of tragedy one must reconsider the traditional view, originally formulated by Aristotle and his critics, which Miller
adapted and reinterpreted. Aristotelian tradition in the broadest terms defined tragedy as the imitation in prescribed dramatic form of a serious,
complete human action, of great enough significance to be worthy of representation, which will strike the audience with pity and fear, two emotions
far removed from sentimental tears. The hero of such a tragedy must be neither perfectly virtuous nor completely base but rather a man, great yet
humanely fallible, who is preordained to suffer because of the fate of his inward character and a catastrophic series of events in the outward world.
Also, he must never die ignorant of the circumstances of his fall, at somepoint, usually just before his death, he must undergo the painful process of
discovery or revelation through which he will come to understand the reasons for and the significance of his role(and may make 'tragic reconciliation"
with life).
Aristotle specified that in Tragedy, the characters are portrayed as men far above the

To do this we need to know why Miller wrote the play, background history and why this is significant to understanding the relationship between

From this and his own experiences he wrote 'A view from the bridge'. The main character in the play is about is Eddie Carbone, an Italian
longshoreman in New York, with a loving wife Beatrice, and her niece Catherine. The plays trouble begins when Beatrice's cousins Rudolph and
Marco come from Italy for work in Brooklyn. Alferi is the character that plays as a narrator as well as a character. Through Alferi the audience can
understand the play more because he is able to talk to the audience. Alferi first introduces us to Eddie carbone. We can tell that Eddie is the main
character by the stage directions "(…in which he is highlighted among the men)" and we know there will be a tragic Alferi predicts this "…
sat there as powerless as I, and watched it run its bloody course" with the word bloody we can tell that whatever the tragic there will be some sort of
death or a blood related scene (fight). In the first scene we meet Eddie and Catherine together. This is when we start to understand the relationship
between the two by the language they use with each other, the dialogue, and actions they use with each other. "Hi Eddie!" "(Eddie is pleased and
therefore shy about it)" the first instinct is that they are going out with each other. Catherine has a new skirt. When Catherine runs her hands over her
skirt the point is even more obvious. By doing this it is like she is flirting with Eddie.

Why Did Arthur Miller Write The Crucible Essay
Why did Arthur Miller write The Crucible? Consider his motivations, personal experiences and historical setting in which it was written. I believe
Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible as an act of depression. Arthur Miller had lived in a time that was in fact, very depressing. During the time Miller
was alive he had seen the actions of McCarthyism and anti–Semitism. Miller was tired of seeing the bystander effect. The bystander effect is where a
group of people are around a situation where they could help, but choose not to because of the fear of being the "black sheep." The Crucible is all
about the bystander effect and the diffusion of responsibility. Arthur used The Crucible as almost a way of expressing himself. In the beginning when he

Tragedy And The Common Man By Arthur Miller
In his essay "Tragedy and the Common Man" Arthur Miller redefines the genre of tragedy and the tragic hero. Miller defines a tragedy as a person
struggling against an injustice in the world around him to, which he responds forcefully. Miller states that the "wound from which the inevitable events
spiral is the wound of indignity, and its dominant force is indignation" (144). The wound originates from the injustice in the environment, but it is
perceived by the character as an "indignation" or other forms of outrage. Ultimately, the struggle of the character leads to that character's downfall, and
also reveals the nature of injustice as being insurmountable by the individual. Miller writes that the character's "destruction in the attempt [to evaluate
himself justly] posits a wrong or an evil in his environment" (145). Therefore, Miller idea of tragedy stems not from the flaws within the character, but
from the flaws within the environment in which he or she lives that the character rails against, but is never able to overcome.
Tragic heroes, according to Miller, actively and entirely commits themselves in a hopeless attempt to attain or regain their personal dignity. Miller
states, "the tragic feeling is evoked in us when we are in the presence of a character who is ready to lay down his life, if need be, to secure one
thing––his sense of personal dignity" (144). This statement emphasizes the absence of "personal dignity" that the character seeks to gain or regain, and it

Arthur Miller

  • 1. Arthur Miller Intro Death of a Salesman is a play written in 1949 by Arthur Miller, the man who would later go on to write the Crucible. Arthur Miller based the character of Willy Loman off of his uncle, who was a traveling salesman and felt competitive with his own sons towards Arthur and his own brother. After bumping into Arthur in Boston, Manny shortly committed suicide. In his life, Arthur had known three people who had committed suicide and two of those were traveling salesman. Arthur was so passionate about this play that he had finished Act 1 in only one day, and Act 2 was finished six weeks later ("Death of a Salesman: Study Guide."). This play, considered by many to be one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, has featured on Broadway for...show more content... Miller's father owned a women's clothing company and during the Depression, he lost his business, and their family moved to Brooklyn. After high school Miller worked at a bunch of different jobs in order to save money for college. He attended the University of Michigan and spent a significant amount of those four years learning to write and creating plays and his first was called No Villain. In 1940, he married Mary Grace Slattery and they had two children, Jane and Robert. After he received his degree, he joined the Federal Theater Project in New York City (Galvin). His first Broadway play, The Man Who Had All the Luck, opened in 1944 and was a failure, but his next play, All My Sons, was extremely successful. Only two years after the success of All My Sons, Miller came out with his most famous and well–respected work, Death of a Salesman. This play won him both a Pulitzer Prize and a Drama Critics Circle Award, and ran for more than 700 performances. Within a short while, it had been translated into over a dozen languages and had made Miller a millionaire. Miller began work on his next major play, the Crucible. The Crucible was set in Salem during the witch–hunts of the late 17th century, but was also based off of McCarthyism in the 1950s. After Miller divorced Slattery, he married Marilyn Monroe in 1956. In 1956 and 1957, Miller was subpoenaed by the House Un–American Activities Committee and was convicted of contempt of Congress for his refusal to identify writers believed to hold Communist sympathies. The following year, the United States Court of Appeals overturned the conviction. A difficult time in his life, Miller ended hismarriage with actress Marilyn Monroe in 1960. Miller finally married photographer Inge Morath in 1962, with whom he lives in Connecticut. He and Inge had first a daughter, Rebecca. Then they had a son, Daniel, who was born with Down Syndrome and was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Analysis Of Arthur Miller 's Life Since the beginning of theatre, there have been numerous playwrights who have made their attempt at greatness. Most have failed, some have had minor success, and a slim few have succeeded. Arthur Miller was an inventive, determined playwright who made a lasting impression on theatre in the 20th century. He was a head–strong, willful individual who conquered obstacles when they presented themselves. Through a brief examination of Arthur Miller's personal life, career as a playwright, and influence on theatre, it is clear to see that he was a very innovative and impactful individual whose effects can still be seen today. Arthur Miller's life began on October 17, 1915 in Harlem, New York when he was born to Augusta and Isidore Miller (Arthur Miller; Arthur Miller Biography). He belonged to a middle–upper class family and enjoyed the benefits of this social class as a young boy. In the stock market crash of 1929, his life took a spin for the worse and his family lost nearly everything, leading him to live a much different lifestyle as a teenager. However bleak his aspect on the world could've been after such a dramatic change, Miller didn't even slightly lose his ambition to succeed in life, but rather gained momentum to accomplish his dreams. After graduating from high school, he labored in a warehouse to save up money for college (Biography of Arthur Miller). The University of Michigan became Arthur Miller's new home for the next stage of his life. He continued to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Arthur Miller Essay Arthur Miller Arthur Miller, in his plays, deals with the injustice of society's moral values and the characters who are vulnerable to its cruelty. A good majority of these plays were very successful and earned numerous awards. According to Brooks Atkinson, a critic for the New York Times, Miller's play Death of a Salesman was successful because the play "is so simple in style and so inevitable in theme that it scarcely seems like a thing that has been written and acted. For Mr. Miller has looked with compassion into the hearts of some ordinary Americans and quietly transferred their hopes and anguish to the theater" (Babusci 1261). This play, in 1949, received the Pulitzer Prize, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the ...show more content... He "is one of society's victims, one of those "who landed in the ash can." As Miller explains it, society chews up Willy because he has broken "the law which says a failure in society and in business has no right to live"" (Bloom, Modern Critical Interpretations: Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman 96). In Howard's office Willy recalls the memory of whom he considered a great salesman, Dave Singleman. He was well liked and popular with his buyers, even to his death. Hundreds of salesman and buyers were at his funeral. Willy wanted to be just like this man, but...all the buyers he once knew are dead, and all the new age buyers care about is getting a deal over and done with. There's no personality in it anymore. He can't pay his insurance... "In brief glimses, Willy recognizes that he is a victim. After he is fired, he complains to Charley, "After all the highways and the trains, and the appointments, and the years, you end up worth more dead than alive"" (Bloom, Modern Critical Interpretations: Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman 96). And his boss doesn't even care. During the scene in his office he is preoccupied with his "new toy" a wire recorder. As Willy's life falls apart, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Essay about Arthur Miller Theater Appreciation ARTHUR MILLER Of the list of American playwrights the one I thought I would find most interesting is Arthur Miller. Being relatively familiar with some of his work I wanted to learn more about him. Through the research I have done I have been able to find some very interesting information about Miller's work as well as his personal life. Arthur Miller was born in New York on October 17, 1915. His father, Isidore Miller, was a ladies–wear manufacturer and shopkeeper whose business was ruined in the Great Depression. This obviously had a huge impact on the family's financial situation which in turn had a strong influence on Miller. The family was forced to move to a small frame house in Brooklyn, which is said...show more content... Miller's work eventually made it to Broadway starting with The Man Who Had all the Luck in 1944. It closed after four performances. Three years later he returned to Broadway producing All My Sons, the story of a factory owner who sells faulty aircraft parts during World War II. It won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. This being his first major award, his work would continue to receive critical acclaim for years, however there would still be ups and downs. Arthur Miller's work varied over the next several years. In 1944 Arthur toured Army camps to collect background material for his screenplay The Story of GI Joe. Miller also wrote his first novel, Focus (1945), which was a story about anti–Semitism. In 1949 Miller's Death of a Salesman brought him international fame. This became probably one of his most well known pieces of work as well as a major achievement of modern American theatre. Death of a Salesman is a story about the quest for the American Dream. The salesman, Willy Loman, is a man of pride who is not the great success that he claims to be to his family and friends. Due to the postwar economic boom he looses his job and goes into a downward spiral. He begins to hallucinate about significant events from his past and eventually he comes to the conclusion that he is worth more dead than alive. Willy kills himself in his car, hoping that the insurance money will support his family Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 7. King Arthur Miller Biography Essay Arthur Miller: An American Author Unique to the literary history of America, Arthur Miller's work shows significant impact upon the public and the history of the country. On October 17, 1915, Augusta and Isidore and Augusta Miller welcomed their son, Arthur Miller, into the world. Although Miller was born in Harlem, New York, his family moved to Brooklyn when Miller's father, Isidore, lost his clothing company. Initially, the company provided the family with a considerable income, allowing them to afford luxuries such as a chauffeur and a summer home in Far Rockaway. Leaving their spacious home in Harlem, the family found themselves in a rough Brooklyn neighborhood where suicides regularly occurred. These surroundings and conditions, including the effects of the Depression, later made a great impact on Miller's work. As a teenager, Miller attended Abraham Lincoln High School where he participated in the French Club, swim team, and football team. In order to save money for college, he began his first job, delivering bread for a local bakery. Some of Miller's later jobs included trucking driving and...show more content... • 8. Arthur Miller : The Greatest Writer And Writer There are many writers in the world, but only Arthur Miller is considered the greatest playwright and writer. His life started pretty much like everyone else. He grew up going to school and had the same experiences that most people did, except he was influenced by these experiences and used them in his writing. He also used writing to promote his different beliefs. He was a writer who wrote with a purpose and actually helped people learn. Arthur Miller is one of the greatest authors of all time, which is shown throughout his childhood, education, life, and his accomplishments. He was born October 17,1915 in New York, New York, United States. Miller was one of the three children. His father was Isidore Miller, a Polish immigrant who made a plentiful amount of money in the garment industry. His mother was Augusta (Barnett) Miller, she was a schoolteacher. Miller had an older brother, Kermit, was more capable of doing things in school and was more athletic than Miller. Miller also had a younger sister, Joan, that was their father's favorite child. Joan later became an actress and had a stage name, Joan Copeland. After Miller's father's business fell through, they moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn, where Miller went to high school. When he attended high school in Brooklyn he lived with relatives and family friends. These were the people that would be the inspiration for his drama. People believed he was a man of integrity and a hero because of the ways he portrayed himself. He was born in 1915 in Harlem, New York and raised in a very wealthy household by his parents, Isidore and Augusta Miller. Arthur Miller wrote many plays in his time, but one in particular, written in 1947 and directed in Beijing in 1983, was the "play that established him as a great American playwright" called "Death of a Salesman". An old man, by the name of Willy valued popularity and his friends way more than skills or even a real personality. His goal was to die a man that had all of these things, and he ends up killing himself in the end. Miller's goal was to "take the audience on an internal journey through the mind, memories, fears, anxieties of his central character." "Death of A Salesman" has been very popular for over a decade, performed internationally, and was even produced into movies (Kristofoletti). Many people remember this play because of how inspiring it was, also because it did not compare to any other of the ones he had ever written.Arthur Miller's second best play was "The Crucible" which premiered in 1953. This play was definitely harder for Miller to write. He took his time on this and wrote it in twelve months. It was a reflection of the Salem Witch Trials that he read about during his time. He found his subject after reading "W. Upham's 1867 two–volume study of the 1692 Salem witch trials" and wrote it after "watching the filming of the new movie of 'The Crucible'". This novel was about the people of Salem, how they felt, and what was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Arthur Miller's Struggles "The American Dream is the largely unacknowledged screen in front of which all American writing plays itself out," Arthur Miller has said (Galvin). To many people Arthur Miller is known for his role against communist accusations and using his writing to portray what has happened during McCarthyism. From Miller's struggles as a child to his first big break as a playwright to his fight against the government, he has still been able to maintain integrity in his writing and captivated many audiences over the years. Growing up during the Great Depression, Miller and his family have faced many hardships. His father was unable to hold a job during these years, but when Arthur was able to get a job, he did. • 11. Arthur Miller's Influence On Society Arthur Miller and the Influences he Faced Arthur Miller was a twentieth century playwright. During the time Miller was writing these plays and during his childhood, he was going through a hard time. As a young man, he was directly affected by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, The Great Depression and the fear of communism that spread after the second World War. By living through all of these events, his work was greatly influenced by them and took what he had learned in his life and turned them into successful plays. In his time, he wrote about everyday people with everyday problems. In his works of Death of a Salesman, The Crucible and All My Sons, the common theme of lies and deceit are present. The Depression and the aftereffects of WWII,...show more content... The play revolves around the information about faulty machine parts that John Keller withheld. Not only is this a lie that caused the death of twenty–one pilots, but it also affects all the people in his life. In one specific instance, Joe is talking to George, who is his business partner's son. "Keller: There are certain men in the world who rather see everybody hung before they'll take blame. You understand me, George?" (Miller, All My Sons 48). This quote is important because it seems as if Joe is talking about himself. Joe let Steve take the blame for selling the defective engine parts, which in turn completely ruins the Deever family. Miller provides a common theme of lies and deceit to show the great consequences that have to be faced in life. It shows that lying is one of the worst things a man can do because it completely tears apart their Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Arthur Miller Essay Writing Arthur Miller was best known for his play that he wrote which made it to Broadway, but his other works may have been some of the most electrifying stories from this era. Arthur Miller was born in Harlem, New York on October 17th, 1915. His family lost nearly everything they had in the stock market crash of 1929, however Arthur Miller attended the University of Michigan to study journalism in 1929 ("Arthur Miller" 1). While he attended Michigan, he was the night editor of the student paper, the "Michigan Daily". Arthur Miller is best known for writing radio plays, screenplays, short stories, and novels (1). While in college, Miller won several awards including the "AveryHopwood Award" for the first play he wrote, No Villain. After college, Arthur Miller moved back home to begin his career in playwriting. Arthur Miller's writings defied his readers by being fearless in his stories that he wrote. Miller worked very hard to get the best information for his stories. One example was The Crucible, this was about Joe McCarthy and his communist hunts (1). Miller wrote about this and got down to the last detail. Miller was even blacklisted, which prevented him from working in theaters and for movie companies, this was soon reversed however, as it was unnecessary (3). One way in which Arthur Miller influenced other writers in his era was by pushing the limits for awards and best stories. His play Death of a Salesman was a hit in 1947 and pushed Broadway plays to beat his works. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

He won Pulitzer Prize for Death of a Salesman. Miller was born in New York in 1915 to an immigrant family of Polish and Jewish descent. The play won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for the best play in 1947and with this Arthur Miller became a known and established dramatist of the theatre. In fact this play launched Arthur Miller as a dramatist in the theatre. "All My Sons deserves a special play in the playwright's canon because it constitutes his major theatrical achievement, displays his extra–ordinary skill in handling dramatic form, and presages even better things yet to come from one of America's greatest dramatists". (Steven R.Centola, "All My Sons", in The Cambridge Companion to Arthur Miller, (ed.), Christopher Bigsby, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1997.), p.51. The critical and commercial success of All My Sons proved to be a turning point in the career of Arthur Miller because this established him as a dramatist in the theatre. After struggling for a long period to establish himself as a dramatist, Arthur Miller was upset and there was a time when he had almost decided to quit writing plays and to shift over other career for his livelihood. • 14. Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller Essay Death of A Salesman, written by Arthur Miller, is a play based on the turmoil within an average American family. Miller wrote Death of A Salesman easily showcasing the elements of drama. I was easily able to follow the plot, identify with his characters, and picture the setting. The main theme of the plot seemed to be Willy reaching for the "American Dream". Financial success, business success, outwardly perfect family, revered by your peers, and in general respected by all. Early on in the play two things are evident to the reader; Willy's questionable mental status, and his tumultuous relationship with his sons. Willy is apparently suffering from some sort of mental or emotional issues. These issues are causing...show more content... Willy's fear of change and evolvement is evident in his resentment of the apartments and in his reaction to the recorder of Mr. Wagner's. He is also unable to come to terms with his own advancing years as a salesman. He only goes to Mr. Wagner to ask for a job strictly in New York when Linda insists. What he sees as valuable experience others see as obsolete. Willy longs for the days when the boys revered him and they were pals. Scott Foll states the driving point of plot is conflict (1182). This play definitely has the ultimate conflict. That is simply, family. Conflict with Willy and Biff, Willy with himself, and Linda with her sons. For me the turning climactic point is when while talking with Ben, Willy believes he can regain what he lost years ago with Biff by ending his life. He thinks the twenty–thousand from the insurance money will fix it all. I suppose the resolution in this play was Willy's death. Although I do not imagine this could truly be resolution for the remaining family. Characterization seemed to be the most well developed element of the play. The patriarch of the family, Willy Loman was portrayed as the tragic hero. I believe his character did indeed possess some character flaws that inevitably led to his death. However, I agree with Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. arthur miller A In the period immediately following the end of World War II, American theater was transformed by the work of playwright Arthur Miller. Profoundly influenced by the Depression and the war that immediately followed it, Miller tapped into a sense of dissatisfaction and unrest within the greater American psyche. His probing dramas proved to be both the conscience and redemption of the times, allowing people an honest view of the direction the country had taken. Arthur Miller was born in Manhattan in 1915 to Jewish immigrant parents. By 1928, the family had moved to Brooklyn, after their garment manufacturing business began to fail. Witnessing the societal decay of the Depression and his father's desperation due to business failures had an...show more content... His insight into the psychology of desperation and his ability to create stories that express the deepest meanings of struggle, have made him one of the most highly regarded and widely performed American playwrights. In his eighty–fifth year, Miller remains an active and important part of American theater. B. Before analysing Miller's view of tragedy one must reconsider the traditional view, originally formulated by Aristotle and his critics, which Miller adapted and reinterpreted. Aristotelian tradition in the broadest terms defined tragedy as the imitation in prescribed dramatic form of a serious, complete human action, of great enough significance to be worthy of representation, which will strike the audience with pity and fear, two emotions far removed from sentimental tears. The hero of such a tragedy must be neither perfectly virtuous nor completely base but rather a man, great yet humanely fallible, who is preordained to suffer because of the fate of his inward character and a catastrophic series of events in the outward world. Also, he must never die ignorant of the circumstances of his fall, at somepoint, usually just before his death, he must undergo the painful process of discovery or revelation through which he will come to understand the reasons for and the significance of his role(and may make 'tragic reconciliation" with life). Aristotle specified that in Tragedy, the characters are portrayed as men far above the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

A View From the Bridge by Arthur Miller Essay A View From the Bridge by Arthur Miller 'A view from the bridge' by Arthur Miller is a tragic intense play about family struggle, lust, passion and deceit. My aim is too look at the relationship of Catherine and Eddie. To understand the relationship, we must understand the atmosphere and culture. To do this we need to know why Miller wrote the play, background history and why this is significant to understanding the relationship between Catherine and Eddie. Arthur miller wrote the play in reflection of his own life and experiences. During World War 2 he worked as a ship fitter where he met many Italians, many of which were Sicilians like the characters in the play. Through Alferi the audience can understand the play more because he is able to talk to the audience. Alferi first introduces us to Eddie carbone. We can tell that Eddie is the main character by the stage directions "(…in which he is highlighted among the men)" and we know there will be a tragic Alferi predicts this "… sat there as powerless as I, and watched it run its bloody course" with the word bloody we can tell that whatever the tragic there will be some sort of death or a blood related scene (fight). In the first scene we meet Eddie and Catherine together. This is when we start to understand the relationship between the two by the language they use with each other, the dialogue, and actions they use with each other. "Hi Eddie!" "(Eddie is pleased and therefore shy about it)" the first instinct is that they are going out with each other. Catherine has a new skirt. When Catherine runs her hands over her skirt the point is even more obvious. By doing this it is like she is flirting with Eddie. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Why Did Arthur Miller Write The Crucible Essay Why did Arthur Miller write The Crucible? Consider his motivations, personal experiences and historical setting in which it was written. I believe Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible as an act of depression. Arthur Miller had lived in a time that was in fact, very depressing. During the time Miller was alive he had seen the actions of McCarthyism and anti–Semitism. Miller was tired of seeing the bystander effect. The bystander effect is where a group of people are around a situation where they could help, but choose not to because of the fear of being the "black sheep." The Crucible is all about the bystander effect and the diffusion of responsibility. Arthur used The Crucible as almost a way of expressing himself. In the beginning when he ...show more content... Tituba was accused with no evidence whatsoever other than word of mouth. Abigail's confession wasn't true. She used Tituba as an escape goat to avoid getting censured for her crime against the church. Tituba did nothing wrong so far, but because she had different physical features it was easy to push the blame onto her. This action is known as diffusion of responsibility. Tituba and many others were falsely accused because of Abigail Williams and Betty Parris. Even though Tituba was falsely accused she still confessed as if she committed the crime. • 19. Tragedy And The Common Man By Arthur Miller In his essay "Tragedy and the Common Man" Arthur Miller redefines the genre of tragedy and the tragic hero. Miller defines a tragedy as a person struggling against an injustice in the world around him to, which he responds forcefully. Miller states that the "wound from which the inevitable events spiral is the wound of indignity, and its dominant force is indignation" (144). The wound originates from the injustice in the environment, but it is perceived by the character as an "indignation" or other forms of outrage. Ultimately, the struggle of the character leads to that character's downfall, and also reveals the nature of injustice as being insurmountable by the individual. Miller writes that the character's "destruction in the attempt [to evaluate himself justly] posits a wrong or an evil in his environment" (145). Therefore, Miller idea of tragedy stems not from the flaws within the character, but from the flaws within the environment in which he or she lives that the character rails against, but is never able to overcome. Tragic heroes, according to Miller, actively and entirely commits themselves in a hopeless attempt to attain or regain their personal dignity. Miller states, "the tragic feeling is evoked in us when we are in the presence of a character who is ready to lay down his life, if need be, to secure one thing––his sense of personal dignity" (144). This statement emphasizes the absence of "personal dignity" that the character seeks to gain or regain, and it Get more content on HelpWriting.net
