Artemis was the twin sister of Apollo and goddess of the hunt, nature, and the moon in Greek mythology. She was born on the island of Delos to Zeus and Leto. As a virgin goddess, Artemis roamed forests surrounded by nymphs and was especially revered by women. She would bless those dying in childbirth with a quick death. In one story, Artemis was bathing when the hunter Actaeon stumbled upon her and she, enraged at being seen naked, transformed him into a stag who was killed by his own hounds.
