Artemis was the Greek goddess of the hunt, wilderness, and the moon. She was born on the island of Ortygia before her twin brother Apollo. For her third birthday, she asked her father Zeus to grant her wishes including eternal virginity and a bow and arrows made by Hephaestus. She was very protective of her vow of chastity and would punish any man who saw her bathing, such as transforming the hunter Actaeon into a stag who was then killed by his own hounds. Artemis remains an active goddess, protecting wildlife, women and girls, and the wilderness.
