Learning never stops for the nurse educator; lifelong learning is necessary to stay current both
in the practice world and in education. Nurse educators need to have a plan for their own
continued professional development that will help them maintain and advance their skills both
as nurses and as educators. Part of professional development is also to be a reflective teacher,
to continue to do as Zorn advises us: to pause and reflect on who we are as people and as
educators.
The nursing profession needs nurse educators to educate more nurses, to introduce and
educate about evidence-based practice changes, and more than ever to join with our colleagues
in other health care disciplines to exchange ideas and engage in interdisciplinary learning. As
educators, we must continue to learn, be certified, and function at a high level to ensure
continued growth for the nursing profession. The Institute of Medicine has charged nurses to be
leaders in health care change, and that requires educators to be at the forefront of those
changes.
Nurse Educators As Leaders
Nurse educators are automatically leaders. The leadership role comes from being responsible
for changing behaviors through education. This may be academically by educating future nurses
and advance practice nurses. It may be clinically by educating staff on evidence-based practice
changes and patients on better health practices. It may be in the community setting, providing
knowledge on disease prevention and healthy lifestyles. Regardless of the setting, the
leadership role is part of the nurse educator designation.
An important aspect of the leadership role is the style of leadership. Some leadership styles
come more naturally to us as individuals because they fit our personality and our background;
sometimes, though, we have to develop a style that is a better fit for the setting that we are
working in. In this unit, we will look at various leadership styles and consider what the most
effective style is for each of as individuals. We are also going to look at the nurse educator as
part of the interdisciplinary team that provides education to other health providers. Increasingly,
this aspect of the educator role is becoming more prominent. As nurse educators we have to be
prepared to work across disciplines and in a variety of settings.
Nurse Educators As Scholars
An expectation for nurse educators is that they are both teachers and scholars. To be a scholar
means that the educator is both teaching others in the discipline of nursing and also adding to
the advancement of the profession. There are many ways that the nurse educator can be a
scholar. Sometimes this is thought of as conducting research and publishing articles and books
on research and evidence-based practice. This is certainly one major way to be a scholar, but
there are many other ways as well.

Through the journey of becoming a leader, it is inevitable for one to emulate and look up to a given leader to follow and follow in their footsteps or even eventually doing better than they did. However, one through the leadership journey unknowingly, one form their unique leadership philosophy that will follow through the trip (Figliuolo, 2011 as cited in Speranza & Pierce, 2019). This paper will highlight my personal views on leadership and how I perceive it to be. Personally, leadership in the workspace is an essential entity that aims to address and show people when I become a leader. I will be what guides and motivates me toward good leadership and my personal goals towards good leadership. Therefore, this paper is a discussion of my vision, core values, and missions in leadership. Additionally, this paper will cover my assessment of my strengths through the Clifton strength assessment technique, summarise the profile of my skills and mention the key areas I would like to strengthen.
Core Values
To dictate your leadership journey and behavior, one needs to have core values to guide them and keep them in line. In nursing, and from a personal view, caring, perseverance, honesty, learning, and ambition to set a goal and work to achieve them should be a leader's core values. However, the underlying core value every nurse should possess is being caring. Dyess (2015) states that the uniting and transforming factor in the nursing profession is caring, giving a sense of responsibility to the patients. From the leadership perspective, caring is a significant value. Not only does it help in connecting with patients and with my colleagues. Caring bring about co-operation in the workspace. If employees feel cared for, it automatically commands respect and understanding. Thus, since my inception into nursing education and career life, it has been the first core value to embrace.
Learning and perseverance also prioritize my core values, from the two core values other relevant to leadership in nursing. Knowledge and determination enable one to develop diversity as a core value which is crucial in adapting to problematic situations and embracing the different cultures and people's ways of life in the workplace. American Nurses Association put out diversity being an essential quality in nursing, acknowledging and appreciating that there are several beliefs, thoughts, and attitudes in the health-seeking behaviors in the healthcare sector. Organizational Behavior is based around multiple concepts, including knowing how to effectively communicate and the affects of leadership in the workplace. .
What’s The Most Worthy? In chapters eleven and twelve we learned communication and leadership. I believe both of these chapters cover extremely important information since businesses rely heavily on good communication and leadership skills. The most worthy of these I believe is leadership. Although communication is just as important, communication can be taught with the right leadership. Leadership in the workplace is one thing; good leadership in the workplace is another. Some benefits of a good leader can include “improved productivity of the workforce, improved ability to succeed under pressure, increased emotional intelligence, improved charisma and seriousness in business operations, growth in confidence in your tem, improved listening and communication skills, increased awareness of diversity in the workforce, improved innovation and creativeness, and a dependable, reliable, competent workforce” (www.rapidboostmarketing.com). With these leadership highlights comes effective communication. Communication is hit on within these leadership goals as well as many other important aspects of a successful business. The Importance of Communication and Leadership Communication and leadership are both important concepts in life alone. Having these skills in the workplace can help with both internal and external factors. Internally, having a good leadership team to teach new employees can help set the expectations for the company. If managers focus on instilling leadership qualities into their employees, the employees will naturally work with a leadership mind set. If everyone in the company is trained this way, the business will reap the benefits externally. If the outsiders of the business can physically see that company doing well, making improvements, and focusing on the future of their business, they are more likely to choose them as a place to give their business to.

Learning never stops for the nurse educator; lifelong learning is necessary to stay current both
in the practice world and in education. Nurse educators need to have a plan for their own
continued professional development that will help them maintain and advance their skills both
as nurses and as educators. Part of professional development is also to be a reflective teacher,
to continue to do as Zorn advises us: to pause and reflect on who we are as people and as
educators.
The nursing profession needs nurse educators to educate more nurses, to introduce and
educate about evidence-based practice changes, and more than ever to join with our colleagues
in other health care disciplines to exchange ideas and engage in interdisciplinary learning. As
educators, we must continue to learn, be certified, and function at a high level to ensure
continued growth for the nursing profession. The Institute of Medicine has charged nurses to be
leaders in health care change, and that requires educators to be at the forefront of those
changes.
Nurse Educators As Leaders
Nurse educators are automatically leaders. The leadership role comes from being responsible
for changing behaviors through education. This may be academically by educating future nurses
and advance practice nurses. It may be clinically by educating staff on evidence-based practice
changes and patients on better health practices. It may be in the community setting, providing
knowledge on disease prevention and healthy lifestyles. Regardless of the setting, the
leadership role is part of the nurse educator designation.
An important aspect of the leadership role is the style of leadership. Some leadership styles
come more naturally to us as individuals because they fit our personality and our background;
sometimes, though, we have to develop a style that is a better fit for the setting that we are
working in. In this unit, we will look at various leadership styles and consider what the most
effective style is for each of as individuals. We are also going to look at the nurse educator as
part of the interdisciplinary team that provides education to other health providers. Increasingly,
this aspect of the educator role is becoming more prominent. As nurse educators we have to be
prepared to work across disciplines and in a variety of settings.
Nurse Educators As Scholars
An expectation for nurse educators is that they are both teachers and scholars. To be a scholar
means that the educator is both teaching others in the discipline of nursing and also adding to
the advancement of the profession. There are many ways that the nurse educator can be a
scholar. Sometimes this is thought of as conducting research and publishing articles and books
on research and evidence-based practice. This is certainly one major way to be a scholar, but
there are many other ways as well.

Through the journey of becoming a leader, it is inevitable for one to emulate and look up to a given leader to follow and follow in their footsteps or even eventually doing better than they did. This paper will highlight my personal views on leadership and how I perceive it to be. Core Values
To dictate your leadership journey and behavior, one needs to have core values to guide them and keep them in line. In nursing, and from a personal view, caring, perseverance, honesty, learning, and ambition to set a goal and work to achieve them should be a leader's core values. However, the underlying core value every nurse should possess is being caring. Dyess (2015) states that the uniting and transforming factor in the nursing profession is caring, giving a sense of responsibility to the patients. From the leadership perspective, caring is a significant value. Not only does it help in connecting with patients and with my colleagues. Caring bring about co-operation in the workspace. If employees feel cared for, it automatically commands respect and understanding. Thus, since my inception into nursing education and career life, it has been the first core value to embrace.

As graduate study in nursing begins, identifying the program of study and professional

assignment is to provide a description of my educational and professional background as well as
explore professional and personal goals related to the course and the practicum.
Education and Professional Background
My name is Florence Nightingale and I want to start by giving you some insight into my
personal life. I currently reside in Orange County, California, where the military has placed my
family. I am an army wife, an associate degree nurse, and a mother of two boys. From a small
town in Virginia, my only opportunity to obtain a higher education degree was to attend a local
college that offered a 2-year degree in nursing. I had an opportunity to begin my chosen
profession early, having a family, and never have to worry about finding employment. I always
knew I wanted to increase my knowledge and do more. Year after year it seemed impossible to
go back to school in the traditional way, since raising small children and moving interfered with
finishing a degree.
Nursing has been the most rewarding career. It is not a job to me but my life. My formal
education began in 1989 at a branch of Kent State University. I graduated with a Bachelor of
Science in Nursing (BSN) in 1993. Working and going to school full-time put a strain on my
grade point average (GPA), but the experience helped me grow both professionally and
personally to an independent self-motivated practitioner.
Currently, I work in an endoscopy department where I developed many standard
operating procedure guidelines which are being utilized throughout the hospital. I am also
planning to obtain my Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) certification
this year. Another certification workshop I plan to attend is a nurse management seminar in July.
PROFESSIONAL PLAN 3
Currently, I hold certifications in basic life support (BLS), advanced cardiac life support
(ACLS), pediatric advanced life support (PALS) and conscious sedation. Prior certifications held
were electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation and neurology assessment.
My experiences are very diverse which has made me flexible, efficient, and have given
me a broad knowledge base. The different areas of expertise include neurology, orthopedics,
urology, day surgery, endoscopy, telemetry, home health, recovery, and research-based projects.
In many of these fields I was chosen to take on leadership roles such as charge nurse, team
leader, preceptor, computer specialist, educator.

Clinical supervision involves supporting practitioners to develop their skills and competence through a formal process. It typically involves observation, feedback, and collaborative reflection to help supervisees improve. The purpose is to support professional growth, ensure client welfare, and act as a gatekeeper for the profession by monitoring performance. Clinical supervision draws from counseling models and uses techniques like psychoanalytic interpretation and focusing on relationships. It aims to be non-managerial and consultative in nature. Various models of the clinical supervision process involve phases like planning, observation, analysis, feedback, and reflection.

A philosophy is the underlying values that nurses hold that influence the quality of care that they provide (Rioux- Dubois, McMillian and Nazon, 2015).
- 4. Action Plan The action plan allowed me to set a realistic learning objective to achieve while I was on placement. It enabled me to set a goal, take the measures to achieve this goal and achieve this goal. This improved my professional development in the domain of organisation and management of care which is essential for my future career in the ward setting.
- 5. Critical Reflections Submission five and six allowed me to critically reflect on a situation I experienced on placement that I found significant to my learning and professional development. I was able to take a deeper look at the experience and learn why the actions taken were made and how to handle the situation again if I was presented with it.
