In the "Inspiring Education Document" , a quote from Dr. Richard Moniuszko is included in the
opening lines of the report that outlines the direction that current educational practices are moving.
Moniuszko states "we need to prepare kids for their future not our past" (as cited by Pink, 2009)
which encapsulates the vision of the proposed transformation that is needed to take place in order to
prepare students to be successful members of society. According to Rosefsky, in opposition to
traditional educational practices, "the interconnectedness of the 21st century global economy,
ecosystem, and political networks require that students learn to communicate, collaborate, and
problem solve with people worldwide"(2012).
Within the Inspiring Education document, the vision for core competencies in 21st century learning
requires a "shift away from traditional dissemination of information and re–call of facts" (Alberta
Education, 2010) and instead focuses on student centered learning models of inquiry and discovery.
This shift in educational practice requires students to acquire new abilities and focus on "higher–
order thinking skills, deeper learning outcomes, and complex thinking and communication skills"
(Saavedra, 2012) and involves teachers creating appropriate instructional and assessment practices.

Professional Development is a necessary component in the world of education, offering new
methods and strategies to the teacher for use in their classrooms. Unfortunately, some professional
developments have good intentions, but fail to be relevant for all teachers. Effective professional
development sessions are based on the needs of the teachers and interests and include opportunities
to collaborate and enhance their content knowledge. Teachers are given opportunities to reflect on
what was learned as well as be accountable to implement a new strategy and be provided feedback
throughout the implementation process. Many teachers view Professional Development as a one–
time event rather than a continual process, spanning over years of implementation. In a study aimed
to test the most common "best practices" of professional development, Garet, Porter, Desimone,
Birman, and Yoon (2001) used data collected from the Teacher Activity Survey as part of the

The WGU nursing program helped me in developing my professional definition of quality and
safety by enlightening my understanding of root cause analysis, and system failures. The IHI course
was an eye opener in my understanding of quality improvement, and the processes required to
enhance safety and quality improvement. The courses that really assisted me in my definition
include, the Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership, the Leadership and Professional
Image, and Professional Roles and Values; and the Evidence–Based Practice and Applied Nursing
Research.

My professional learning plan, therefore, focuses on both clinical practice–being prepared for
transitional practice, and academic training–developing advanced research skills. While developing
my learning plan for career development, I also engaged Donald Super's five stages self–concept
theory (Super 1953) and Benner's five levels of clinical competence (Benner 1984). According to
Super (1953), between the age 25 to 44 is the establishment stage when a person experiences a
process of settling down and then advance the career. It requires the person to build entry–level
skills and stabilises position through work experience. As I am a culturally and linguistically diverse
(CALD) nurse, it could take 2 to 3 years for a CALD nurse to adapt into a new working

Expected limitations of this study are as follows:
1. The length of the survey may impact the responsiveness and accuracy of teachers in the sample.
The survey contains at least 50 items and is projected to take 15 to 20 minutes to complete which
may impact responses. As a result, the sample size may be smaller than projected.
2. Research has shown that teachers take a lackluster if not negative attitude toward professional
development. As a result, respondents may not take the survey seriously if not presented in a proper
context.
3. A lack of understanding of common understanding and agreement on what is effective
professional learning may result in inaccurate responses from teachers. Teachers will respond based
on their experiences and opinions rather than accurate understanding.

Professionalism can be defined as "the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a
profession or a professional person."(Merriam–webster) My interpretation of this definition is that
professionalism is a standard that we must hold ourselves accountable to in order to provide the best
service. How do we get from a basic understanding of this definition, to practicing and applying
professionalism? Major attributes that lead to professionalism can include accountability,
communication and reflective practice. Reflective practice in the healthcare system is when
"practitioners engage in a continuous cycle of self–observation and self evaluation in order to
understand their own actions and the reactions they prompt in themselves" (becoming a better
university teacher...). In the day–to–day life, everyone performs a type of reflection whether it is by
unconscious thought or by habit. When it is unintentional it is hard to learn and grow from the

Both these professions expect the same high standards when it comes to education and training.
Nursing and Social Work both have requirements for continued professional development and
lifelong learning. It is essential that Nurses and Social workers keep a record of their training
throughout their careers.
To be able to remain working and practicing as a nurse or a midwife you must keep your skills and
knowledge up to date through lifelong learning. This requires that nurses complete 450 hours of

Nursing : The Importance Of Professionalism In Nursing
Nursing is an occupation in which professionalism (or lack thereof) can have a significant effect on
not only patients and their health, but the nurse's relationships with colleagues, patients' families and
even their community. A nurse must exemplify professionalism, especially in an environment that
creates increased risk for loss of life or further injury. There are many aspects that are involved with
professionalism in nursing, and many expectations set up on the nurse.
Nurses develop professional skills through a process called "Professionalization." Ghadirian uses
four factors to describe this; cognitive dimension, attitudinal dimension and psychomotor
dimension. They then further describe the cognitive dimension as the "professional knowledge" a
nurse must have (2014). Without knowledge of illness or the human body, a nurse can not practice
professionally. Ghadirian then suggests that even with extensive professional knowledge, a nurse
can not be professional without the ideals and ethics of a nurse, or the ability to provide care (2014).
A nurse can not be professional without all the dimensions. A nurse must have the values of a nurse,
knowledge of a nurse and the ability to provide care.
Behaviors associated with nursing professionalism go far beyond how nurses practice in a clinical
setting. Alidina describes professionalism as "a multidimensional concept that provides nurses with
opportunities to grow personally and professionally (2013, p. 128). This shows that professionalism
has many different components. Alidina also uses "Miller's Wheel of Professionalism." This model
uses a wheel to represent different aspects of professionalism. The different behaviors that are
represented are "adherence to code for nurses, community service orientation, Professional
Organization Participation, autonomy and self–regulation, Publication and Communication,
development and use of theory and research, and continuing education and competence (2013, p.
129–130). The first spoke, "adherence to code for nurses," represents the need for nurses to follow
the rules laid out for them. These could be scope of practice, rules associated with certain
