2. Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment,
color, or other medium to a surface. Paintings may
have for their support such surfaces as walls, paper,
canvas, wood, glass, lacquer, clay, copper or
concrete, and may incorporate multiple other
materials including sand, clay, paper, gold leaf and
others.
26. Pablo Picasso
Pablo Picasso was born on the 5th October 1881, in Spain.
He is considered one of the most remarkable personalities of
the 20th century. In 1906, together with Braque, he introduced
a new style of painting called Cubism which represented things
in three dimensions. He is also a pioneer in ‘abstract art’ and set
new traditions in painting during his 78 years’ long artistic career.
Picasso made his contribution to different forms of art, sculpture,
ceramics, graphic illustrations and stage designs.
During his long and distinguished career he produced about
13,500 paintings, 34,000 illustrations, 400 sculptures and
countless other artistic creations. The total value of this works is
estimated at over 500 million pounds. Two Brothers (1905) and
Seated Harlequins (1972) are his two most precious paintings.
Picasso’s paintings still fetch enormous sums at auctions.
Picasso’s painting Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (Girls of Avignon I, 1937) is one of the
most important paintings in the history of modern art. Another painting Guermica (1937)
depicting the savagery of the Spanish Civil War is probably his best known work. His output
was enormous.

32. Michelangelo
Michelangelo is regarded as the greatest artist of the
middle ages. Michelangelo was born in Italy in 1475.
He wanted to be a sculptor from his childhood. At that
time, it was considered necessary to know about painting
before one could aspire to be a sculptor. Hence, he first
studied painting and made many paintings in Florence. Impressed
by his capability, the monk invited him to paint the ceiling of the
Sistine Church. He was also an architect and perhaps his most-
celebrated achievement was the design of many principal features of
St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome especially the wonderful dome.
Michelangelo made some 350 illustrations in the Sistine Chapel.
They cover 1000 square feet.
It took him four years of hard work to complete the work. The paintings are still as fresh as they
were in his time. Millions flock to Sistine Chapel to see and admire them even today.
Michelangelo sculpted many statues. His statue of David in Florence is considered as a
valuable contribution to the world of fine arts. It is carved in marble. His statue of Moses and the
door of Portapia were equally famous. His sculptures have carved from him a niche in the world.
It was because of him that Florence became a world renowned center for art.
His memory has been honored by countries all over the world. He lived for 90 years, but
never seemed to find peace in his mind.

38. Vincent Willem Van Gogh
Vincent Willem Van Gogh was born on 30 March, 1853 in Holland.
Van Gogh’s life is an unending saga of poverty and mental tensions.
No other painter led such a tragic life. He was cruelly neglected in his
life time.
He suffered from depression due to poverty as also an unsuccessful
love affair with an English girl. In a fit of mental depression,
Van Gogh cut his ear. Later, made a self portrait with bandage on the
damaged ear. Van Gogh preferred bright colors.
Though he made hundreds of paintings, he could sell only one
during his life.
Now he is recognized as one of the classic masters like Rembrandt
and others.
An incredulous world hear the news that on 30 March, 1987,
Christis of London auctioned a painting of Van Gogh for the fabulous
amount of 500,000,000 £. It was one of the seven sunflowers. This is
supposed to be the highest price paid for any painting so far. As it is,
most of the paintings by this artist now fetch millions of dollars.
During the last six years of his life he created some 700 sketches and 800 oil paintings. In return,
he got nothing but penury and mental tensions.
His last painting the “Cornfield” (1890) was not finished. It is an irony of fate that he got ample
measure of fame and recognition nearly a century after his death.
