This talk deals with European experiences with collective strategies for the development of the performing arts, with a focus on Flanders. In the 1980’s, international networks and platforms for (co)production and presentation were set up (e.g. IETM). In the case of Flanders, this coincided with diverse domestic strategies: a.o. the emergence of artists collectives, a touring circuit, an advocacy organisation,… In a time when government support for contemporary performing arts was absent, the interplay of these strategies resulted not only in Flemish artists being launched on international platforms. It also lead to the development of an innovative Flemish funding system. It enabled artists, companies and producing houses to develop their work and to fully engage in a transnational networks for (co-)production and presentation.
This way of working has resulted in growth: more productions, in more venues and countries all around the world. There are, however, downsides to the story. With government spending under pressure throughout Europe, producers are being forced to rely on an ever growing number of increasingly vulnerable partners. The position of individual artists in this network has become precarious. How sustainable is this growth in the longer term? Are the limits of the transnational co-production and distribution model in sight? How can we re-think our current working models?

- 3. LITERATURE The main direction of literature in XX century was Modernism. Modernism is characterized by a break with the traditional styles of poetry and prose. The modernist literary movement was driven by a desire to overturn traditional modes of representation and express the new sensibilities of the time. Many wonderful not- modernist novels were written. ‐ George Bernard Shaw ‘The Irrational Knot’, ‘Immaturity’; ‐ John Galsworthy ’The Forsyte Saga’ ‐ Rudyard Kipling ‘The Jungle Book’ ‐ Herbert George Wells ’Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought’
- 4. ARCHITECTURE Modernism and Postmodernism was manifested in architecture. Modernism emerged as a reaction against the world before First World War. Stylistically Modernism was functional, drawing upon objects that were designed for a specific purpose such as an attempt to enrich Modern architecture. Many shopping malls and office complexes used this style.
- 5. MUSIC “BRITISH INVASION” The British Invasion was a phenomenon that occurred in the mid 1960s when a group of rock and pop music acts from the United Kingdom became popular in the United States. Bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones would get their start during this time and go on to make a lasting impact on the American music scene. • The Beatles (1960-1970) were the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed act in the history of popular music. • The Rolling Stones (1962- present time) are an English rock band formed in London.
- 6. CINEMA British cinema have always been a little bit separately from the rest of Europe. Special importance in the late 50's and early 60's played a commercial British film, which was based on the detective genre, including the following novels of Agatha Christie's Poirot and Miss Marple and the famous James Bond movies.
- 7. DRAWING • Vorticism was a short-lived modernist movement in British art of the early 20th century. (Wyndham Lewis) • English style of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism (Harold Gilman, Spencer Gore)
