Arsenic is a toxic metal that can cause acute or chronic poisoning when ingested. Acute poisoning causes gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea within 1 hour. It can also cause cardiac issues, respiratory failure, and death within 1-3 days. Chronic arsenic poisoning presents with skin lesions, neuropathy, and cancers of the lung, skin, and bladder after repeated exposure over months or years. Diagnosis is made through urine, blood, hair, and nail testing showing elevated arsenic levels. Treatment involves gastric lavage, dimercaprol or DMSA as chelating agents, and supportive care. Arsenic poisoning was sometimes used for homicide due to its ability to cause death gradually with symptoms resembling illness.
