What is Aromatherapy
“Aromatherapy can be defined as the controlled use of essential oils to maintain
and promote physical, psychological, and spiritual wellbeing.” Gabriel Mojay
The Oldest Form of Treatment on Earth
“Aromatherapy” is derived from two words. Aroma - meaning fragrance /smell
and Therapy - meaning treatment…….hence it is a treatment by aroma
What are Essential Oils
• Essential oils are defensive or attractive volatile liquids and aromatic compounds
that are produced by the plants and distilled or pressed from plants for medicinal
purpose.
• E/O are extracted from flowers, seeds, leaves, stems, bark, resin, roots, berries or
fruit
• E/O can quickly penetrate the skin tissues and can circulate the body in 20 minutes
• E/O contains some of the most powerful anti-oxidants
• Each plant and its part has specific or unique scent or fragrance due to E/O
• E/O is 1000 times more powerful than fresh or dried herbs
E/O – Extracted from Different Plant Parts
Flowers  Chamomile, Lavender, Neroli, Rose, Jasmine, Kevda
Leaves  Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Palmarosa, Turmeric
Resins  Frankincense, Myrrh
Wood  Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Pinewood
Fruits  Lemon, Orange
Berries  Black Pepper, Clove
Roots  Ginger, Vetiver (Khus)
Seeds  Cardamom, Carrot, Nutmeg
Bark  Cinnamon
Whole plant  Basil, Citronella, Lemongrass
Method of Oil
Extraction
• Steam distillation
• Cold pressed
• Solvent (alcohol, benzene,
hexane)
• Enfleurage (infusion with fat)
How Aromatherapy works?
• Essential Oils are lipid soluble and hence they can
easily cross our blood brain barrier.
• They can interact directly with the neurotransmitter
receptors: Glycine, Dopamine, Serotonin and increases
the production of endorphins and antibodies that
boost our immune system.
• E/O also affect our hypothalamus which stimulates the
production of energy hormones (thyroid) and growth
hormones (youth and longetivity)
• They enter and leave the body efficiently, leaving no
toxins behind unlike chemical or drug.
How E/O works through the lungs
When E/O is inhaled
through the lungs it
is carried in the
bloodstream along
with oxygen filled
molecules that are
sent to the heart and
then pumped off to
the rest of the body.
LUNGS
How E/O works through the skin
When E/O is
applied to the skin
some molecules
are absorbed in
the skin pores and
eventually meet
up with the blood
vessels and are
transferred
through the body
via circulatory
system

Storing Essential Oils
• Store in a cool (not cold) place, where they are NOT
exposed to sunlight.
• Shelf life is about 36 months.
• Dilution in a carrier oil not in water
• Open bottles only for use and keep caps securely closed
• Pure unadulterated oils exist for very long time but will
eventually go bad due to oxidation
• Even in an inert atmosphere, possibility that EO molecules
react among themselves.
• Citrus oils - prone to degradation (high level of limonene
oxidizes relatively easily).
Adulteration
Purposeful adulteration of cheaper alternative
oils, by-products or non natural material with
the intent to reduce the cost
Forms of Adulteration:
1. Dilution
2. Isolation
3. Reconstitution
4. Substitution
5. Chemo types
How do we test & ensure the quality?
• Buyers Beware – Know your
supplier right
• Sensory Means
• Blotter Test
• Machine Test: GLC, Optical
Rotation, Solubility, Ref Index
• Storage : Sedimentation
Buyers Beware

  • 53. Storing Essential Oils • Store in a cool (not cold) place, where they are NOT exposed to sunlight. • Shelf life is about 36 months. • Dilution in a carrier oil not in water • Open bottles only for use and keep caps securely closed • Pure unadulterated oils exist for very long time but will eventually go bad due to oxidation • Even in an inert atmosphere, possibility that EO molecules react among themselves. • Citrus oils - prone to degradation (high level of limonene oxidizes relatively easily).
  • 54. Adulteration Purposeful adulteration of cheaper alternative oils, by-products or non natural material with the intent to reduce the cost Forms of Adulteration: 1. Dilution 2. Isolation 3. Reconstitution 4. Substitution 5. Chemo types
