On the Waterfront is a film directed by Elia Kazan which illustrate the difficulties that the
protagonist, Terry Malloy, has struggled in the early period of 1950s. Terry Malloy was a
former prize fighter who was bought up in a dark and brutal world of men. Since his career has
ruined by the corrupted union which was controlled by Johnny Friendly, Terry was being
recognized as a bum within both the longshoremen and the mobs. This poor environment has
created a false philosophy within Terry himself, Do it to him, before he does it to you . However,
after he met Edie and Father Barry, Terry realized how wrong his philosophy was. Thus Terry, with

She won the gold medal at the Korean International Ballet Competition. The Kremlin Ballet has

Kremlin Ballet coach for the competitions. Without doubt she has proved that she is a talented
dancer with huge potential. She posted photos at the Korean competition of herself with the

That would be quite understandable under the circumstances. Joy s dancing has improved
dramatically. I believe she deserves acknowledgement for that. In the end, no matter what her
motivation has been for entering the various competitions, she has done very well in them. That
says something about her talent. Top professionals from all over the world are judges. She has

He blamed this divisiveness on those who believe that skin color and gender should entitle certain
groups of people to some benefits while denying them from other for no reason but racial
preferences:
Do we not believe it was divisive when those from an earlier period said slavery was immoral?
Was it not divisive when our nation s people fought among themselves over this very issue? Was it
not divisive when we sent troops into Montgomery and Selma, Alabama to protect the rights of
people like Rosa Parks and James Meredith to ensure their right to sit wherever they wanted on a
bus and to attend a college that wasn t segregated?
Yes, those were divisive times. But the seeds of division are not planted by those of us who seek
to eliminate racial and ethnic preferences; they are planted by those who believe that our skin
color and gender and how we spell our last names should entitle us to the harvest of diversity ―
college admission, government employment, and contracts. (Connerly 5)
Clinton began to give many examples of discrimination practices that used to happen as early as
1960s. He explained how blacks was denied attending segregated schools and universities, how the

Similarities Between Jazz And Hip Hop
Jazz and Hip Hop
Jazz and hip hop, two forms of music born out of the historical and social struggles of the African
American culture. Jazz finds its origins in New Orleans, Louisiana, uniting military music with
ragtime, Creole and European traditions, and finally the blues, with its painful history of slavery
and racial abuse. Hip Hop however born out of the streets of New York City, reflecting on the
treacherous gang violence and social inequalities for inner black kids. Most would say that hip hip
is somewhat of a grandchild to jazz. Whether it is or not, both constantly deal with racial issues,
finding their roots and icons in the African American culture.
For well over a century now, jazz has been the father of American music. It has... Show more

The looping and use of breaks in hip hop definitely maybe the main difference between the two
genres. These techniques were used to satisfy the audience. The pauses in the music when the
MC or DJ talked to the crowd made the hip hop scene a lot more enjoyable. Lots of
documentaries on Netflix show this particular era. The first hip hop pioneers, such as DJ Kool
Herc, realized that in the parties they were throwing in the Bronx, playing disco and funk music,
people were responding very well to how he played the music. These technics were born out of an
effort to isolate these bits of music that were thrilling the crowd, and repeat them in order to make
the parties more fun. This is where we see the difference between the enjoyment of jazz and hip
hop. Jazz improvisators build up to reach ultimate, thrilling levels of music. Try to listen to Coltrane
s legendary Acknowledgment, starting in the middle of the solo, you might feel a little lost and not
enjoy the intensity of the tune as much as you might if you had listened to the whole piece.
Hip Hop does not have this patience. Much younger than jazz, living in New York City, where
everything goes fast and the youth lives at a hundred miles per hour, there is no time to sit down
and let the music build up to a thrilling climax. Hip hop unleashes the thrill at the first second. It
finds the sound bite that people love and bang it, repeat it with a

Compare And Contrast John Meany And Owen Meany
Owen Meany and John Wheelwright; Effect of Spirituality
A Prayer for Owen Meany analyzes the relationship between various depths of spirituality in
comparison to mundane life. The novel by John Irving uses characters such as Owen Meany and
John Wheelwright, to juxtapose the contrasting nature of faith and doubt, and fate and free will.
John Wheelwright s and Owen Meany s differing attributes highlight the use of contrast within A
Prayer for Owen Meany. While Owen Meany tends to be a leader, John is a follower where his
primary experiences tend to be due to Owen. Furthermore, their different appearances further
illustrate their differences while John is a typical male, Owen appears childlike in stature with a
rodent quality to his appearance. Consequently, these comparisons between the two characters
highlight the underlying theme of spirituality within the novel. Owen Meany has a continuing
belief in God, even taking it as far as saying that God has a specific plan for him. GOD HAS
TAKEN YOUR MOTHER. MY HANDS WERE THE INSTRUMENT. GOD HAS TAKEN MY
HANDS. I AM GOD S INSTRUMENT (page 90) This quote illustrates the absolute belief that
Owen has in God; despite the fact that Owen has taken the life from Tabitha Wheelwright, mother
of Johnny, he chalks it up to fate and God s will. However, John Wheelwright doubts the ideologies
of Christianity as he changes his denomination within the Christian community regularly. This
contrast is displayed when the two boys are young

in the Okaloosa and Walton county areas. In addition to serving the community with adult
education and college courses, NWFSC provides the Child Development Education Center,
Collegiate High School, AmeriCorps, Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance, and Mattie M. Kelly
Cultural Environmental Institute. A natural extension of these programs would be an on campus
NWFSC Garden. The dictionary definition of a garden is 1) a plot of ground, usually near a

Gardens offer science and mathematics lessons in enjoyable, hands on situations that permit
children to think with their hands . Gardens help teach communities and endorse sustainable, local
foods while also providing critical science and mathematics lessons to elementary students. Gardens
also teach children life lessons such as patience and accountability as they nurture plants. Research
done by the University of Alabama demonstrates that children s participation in gardens leads to
healthier food choices, more compliance to try or eat vegetables, improved plant knowledge,
greater interest in learning, and increased reading and math standardized test scores. Students who
participated in gardening had a six percent lower body mass index, an average of eleven percent
higher standardized test scores, and twenty seven percent more vegetable consumption (Grider). For
many students, school can be a uninteresting but required exercise where paying attention and
retaining information becomes a tedious endeavor. When an active teacher decides to teach science
through gardening and hands on experience, they will discover that students are more engaged with
a higher voluntary participation rate. NWFSC should start a garden because of the possible learning

In Maryland, public assistance programs as well as housing programs are able to deny assistance
to individuals with incarceration histories or convictions on their records. The Corporation for
Supportive Housing estimates that 10 to 12 percent of former inmates are homeless. Other studies
put the count at between 15 and 27 percent (Law). With such a large percentage of inmates being
released to the streets, it is no wonder that rates of recidivism are so high.
Marylanders need to push for the Second Chance Act to apply to housing, and not solely to
employment opportunities.
Who is impacted?
After a three to five year waiting period, the Maryland Second Chance Act shields conviction

Increase The Toughness Of Steels After Quenching Process
Abstract:
Tempering is an important heat treating process, which is used to increase the toughness of steels
after quenching process. Hollomon Jaffe equation H=T(c+logвЃЎt ) is widely used to predict
hardness with different tempering temperature and tempering time. T is the tempering temperature,
t is the tempering time and c is the constant for the specific steel. The physical explanation of c
constant was not clear. In this paper, the hardness and c/a ratio of tempered martensitefor AISI
4140 were measured by X Ray Diffraction and Rietveld refinement. The result reveals that the c/a
ratio decreases instantly within the first 60s tempering time. After analysis based on the experiment
results and derivation of Hollomon Jaffe equation, c, the parameter in Hollomon Jaffe equation, is
found to stand for the slope of carbon hardness curve.
Key words: Tempering, martensite, X ray diffraction, Hollomon Jaffe equation
1. Introduction
All steels that are hardened are subjected to a subcritical heat treatment referred to as tempering .
Tempering improves the toughness of as quenched martensite (body center tetragonal) but lowers
strength and hardness 1, . The microstructure transformation is very complex: Stage1: The
formation of transition carbides and lowering of the carbon content of the martensite to 0.25% (100
to 250в„ѓ) Stage2: The transformation of retained austenite to ferrite and cementite (200 to 300в„ѓ)
Stage3: The replacement of transition carbides and low temperature

The Major Causes Of World War I
World War I was a global war that was centered in Europe and started on July 28, 1914 and
continued to November 11, 1918. It was a war that resulted in millions of casualties, but it paved
the way for major political changes, including revolutions in many nations involved in the war.
Militarism, alliances, and imperialism were the major causes creating tensions which began one of
the most violent and deadly war of European history.
Militarism is the belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong
military competence and be prepared to use it in means necessary to defend or promote national

power which it s holdings included Indochina, some Pacific islands and several colonies in west

Different Ways Of Implementing Css Styles Into Html
Dean Cartner CSS
(P1)
There are 3 different ways of implementing CSS styles into html. These are internal, external and
inline. External is when you have a file that only contains CSS code in it and is saved with .css at
the end. External sheets are referenced in the HTML code using link . You need to link it from all
HTML pages. Doing so means you only need to set the styles once. This comes in useful if you
want to change the styles later on as you only have to do it in the one place. This is an example.
Internal is when you place all the CSS code in the head section of the code so between head and
/head . As opposed to the external css you don t need to create a rule for each HTML element. This
is an example of internal CSS code.
Inline is CSS style that is applied to only one element by using the style attributes which means
you can only apply the style you want to a certain instance. These are fairly straight forward and
quick to make which means you don t have to create a seperate document or create a new element
for it in the head section. This is an example.
(M1)
I am going to explain functions, advantages and disadvantages of External and Inline which are
two different ways to implement CSS. There are several advantages for using external CSS
including the fact that it gives you total control of the layout and structure of your page which
allows you to keep the website and the content separate in your code.

recessions are worse than others and the output of GDP and employment are falling farther and

business cyclebefore a recovery/expansion of the business cycle occurred and GDP and
employment started to rise (Krugman Wells. 2012). The next recessionlasted from 1981 1982 and

tantrums of the terrible twos, the kicking during sibling rivalry matches, the endless hassles of
bedtime rituals, which lead to endless nights of waiting for the teenager to come home, not to

ADHD is hyperactivve resulting in poor concentrate (Kassin 319). Both of these disorders are
commonly diagnosed in school children as a result of a child s disruptive behavior. Sally Smith,
founder of an elite private school for children with disorders, stated ADHD is [a] psychological
disorder that is characterized by a constant state of anxiety not linked to an identifiable source
(Kassin 318). Symptoms for ADHD include the inability to sit still while studying or even watching
television. While children suffering from ADD have the inability to stay focused while performing
these tasks. Doctors believe Ritalin acts as a stimulant drug that can be used to increase arousal as
well as the production of neurotransmitters and dopamine inside a child s head (Stammen 24).
Although the drug is not completely understood, this stimulant, also known as Vitamin R, is
placed in the hands of nearly 600,000 ADD and ADHD diagnosed children (Brink 79). Research
has hypothesized that most ADHD and ADD children exhibit an increase in attention span and
overall improvement in their classroom behavior. Although Ritalin seems to help, it is far from a

term ground sloth is used as a reference for all extinct sloths because of the large size of the
earliest forms discovered, as opposed to the extant tree sloths. However, this is a historical

Mohan Vs Liederman
1. Short answer (Weeks 9, 11, 12): Compare and contrast the main arguments of Mohanty, Sen, and
Liederman. How are they similar to one another? How are they different from each other?
The similarity between Mohanty and Liederman is that they both talk about the underrepresented
women. In Mohanty, these underrepresented women are the third world women and in Liederman,
they are women who wear headscarf in France. Another similarity is that they both wrote about
either them or some other culture belief in only one right religion/belief and anything else is wrong.
For example, Mohanty belief that these third world women are oppressed because they do not go
to school and have no education. Sen and Lieberman, both refer to the religion and culture as a
willingness and not a force to the people. For example, Sen explains about the alleged Asian values
that it s not that Asian do not want to be free, but it s just that they put the state s right before their

will be temporarily cut off for one hour for five days. This seems simple enough, but as you read the

You immediately catch on that this is a big part in why they are having marital problems; they
are both extremely overwhelmed with grief. Shukumar is so overwhelmed that he seldom
leaves the house whereas Shoba is so overwhelmed but stays away from the house as much as
she can. The house reminds her of her loss. Shukumar even says that she treats the house as if it
s a hotel and that she began putting in extra hours at work . Shukumar and Shoba s grief have
led them to withdrawing from one another. Until the nightly power outages, they avoided each
other as much as possible. Shukumar even stays in the room he knows Shoba doesn t want
anywhere near because the baby s crib was once there. Symbolism can be seen in the power
outages. When the power is off, Shukumar and Shoba become intimate and share things with
one another. The darkness represents their safe place and the relationship they once shared
before the loss of their child. But as the title explains, this is only temporary . The power outages
will only happen over a period of five days and after that everything will go back to the way it
was. The loss of the baby symbolizes the turning point for their marriage. After the loss of their
child, things quickly began to change. We know this because Shukumar is constantly reminiscing
and going back to how his wife once looked or how she once cooked. A Temporary Matter ,

All together, Parameswaran s article is well researched as she refers to a variety of sources as she
transitions from one topic to the next. She cites information from many different sources to support
her overall stance but sometimes uses too many quotations. Although there is not a rule about how
many sources one should use in their academic writing, one can argue that Parameswaran s article
is mostly composed of source information, rather than composing her stance with her own voice.
Because the use of sources is overpowering, her writing becomes overwhelming for readers because
they are not getting the author s point of view on the issue. Parameswaran states that as students
learn about issues of discrimination, they begin to reexamine their values. At times, the
reexamination leads students who belong to dominant groups to feel guilty and accuse people who
belong to underrepresented groups of reverse racism (qtd. in Parameswaran 5). An example of a
source Parameswaran overuses is information from Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, a psychologist and
author who focuses on race in education, and expands on reverse racism. Tautm s book discusses
how students learn about Whites who were and/or are racists. Parameswaran reiterates Tatum s
ideas by stating that most students can name people who hold racist values, but cannot recall any
White individuals who fought against racial prejudice. According to Tatum, this is one reason that

Optimism as a Theme for Candide Essay
Optimism as a Theme for Candide
Just as on the title, Candide, or Optimism, Optimism is also used as a major theme. Voltaire s satire
of philosophical optimism is one of the major issues of Candide. Throughout the story, satirical
references to the best of all possible worlds contrast with natural catastrophes and human
wrongdoing. According to Wikipedia, optimism, the opposite of pessimism, is a lifeview where the
world is looked upon the as a positive place. Optimists generally believe that people are inherently
good. These people are said to have a positive outlook on life, believing that given time, things will
work out in the end. Also according to Wikipedia, In philosophy, optimism is linked with the name

Private misfortunes make for public welfare, Pangloss concludes. This is true in a optimistic society
According to SparkNotes.com:
Pangloss and his student Candide maintain that everything is for the best in this best of all
possible worlds. This idea is a reductively simplified version of the philosophies of a number of
Enlightenment thinkers, most notably Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz. To these thinkers, the
existence of any evil in the world would have to be a sign that God is either not entirely good or
not all powerful, and the idea of an imperfect God is nonsensical. These philosophers took for
granted that God exists, and concluded that since God must be perfect, the world he created must
be perfect also. According to these philosophers, people perceive imperfections in the world only
because they do not understand God s grand plan. Because Voltaire does not accept that a perfect
God (or any God) has to exist, he can afford to mock the idea that the world must be completely
good, and he heaps merciless satire on this idea throughout the novel. The optimists, Pangloss and
Candide, suffer and witness a wide variety of horrorsВ—floggings, rapes, robberies, unjust
executions, disease, an earthquake, betrayals, and crushing ennui. These horrors do not serve any
apparent greater good, but point only to the cruelty and folly of humanity and the indifference of
the natural world. Pangloss struggles to find justification for the terrible things in the world, but his

Unnecessary Stigm Bdsm Relationships
Unnecessary Stigma: BDSM Relationships
With the rise of books like Fifty Shades of Grey, there are many questions being asked about what
the real effects of BDSM (bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and
masochism (sadomasochism)) relationships are on participants (Turley et al 123, McDonald).
There s the question of where the boundary between abuse and recreational play is drawn, where
the psychological implications of the relationship becomes too much for the individual, but all of
that can be boiled down to just a few points to explore. In order to really understand what all comes
with these relationships, we must look at the experiences of participants, seeking to understand
what BDSM is, and what it means. We must ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Black gives them to us: SSC, or Safe, Sane, Consensual, and RACK, or Risk Aware Consensual
Kink. The latter really becomes important when individuals engage in play that involves things
like drugs, where the risks can be considered no longer safe for SSC to apply (Black). Once the
understanding of limits, both soft and hard, has been reached, and the participants have given
consent, play like that between Tom and Joe can begin. As Stear points out, the scenes that are
engaged in are a form of make believe, one that gets very involved with the body, pleasure, and
possibly even pain, but they are a fantasy nonetheless (29). Tom isn t actually a puppy, but
pretending to be, getting so lost in the headspace that, for a time, he experiences the world as if
he were a puppy, giving him a break from the stresses of human life (Turley et al 130). It is with
this understanding of what the scenes are made of, along with what they are built upon, that we
can begin to focus on what BDSM is for an individual.
These relationships go beyond many other types in requiring participants to trust each other enough
to give up or receive some kind of power in relation to the other. Even when the dominant
/submissive dynamic isn t as revalent, there is a level of trust and communication that is

Nature And Nature In Keats s Ode To A Nightingale
Edleen Begg was in 1948 among the first to question Keats s supposed love for nature. Her study,
taking aim primarily at Keats s travel correspondence, concluded that natural beauty rarely
impressed him other than through literary mediation or association. If the letters in question might
come off as suspicious by Romantic standards of scenic devotion, they describe with a hint of
Heinrich Heine s irreverent travel writing experiences that must be considered emblematic to the
modern sightseer. While Keats deplores the tourist invasion of the Lake District, disfiguring the
noble tenderness of Lake Windermere with its miasma of London (KL, I, 299), he also expresses a
longing for a seat, and a Cup o tea when picturesque mountains, castles and Lakes have become
common (KL, I, 351) goods. In the renditions of his spontaneous Scottish impressions into verse, a
more important kind of positioning can nonetheless be discerned. Describing his eagerness to visit

Human Sacrifice In Ancient Egyptian Culture
Human sacrifice Yizhuo Chen 12/21/2016
Human sacrifice is an important matter and human behavior in prehistory in the evolution of
ancient civilization. It is the act of killing human. Usually human sacrifice comes with deity as a
ritual activity. Throughout history, human sacrifice has been practiced in diverse cultures and
different civilizations. As far as I know, there are some bizarre methods of human sacrificein
history.
In Ancient Egypt, pharaohs had the highest positions in Egyptian society not only in religion but
also in politics. In early pharaonic civilization, as long as pharaohs deceased, pharaohs were buried
with their servants and retainers. This behavior is cruel and violent because servants and retainers
were still alive when they were buried. All the people in Ancient Egypt had a common view with
the belief that servants and retainers still could serve their owner after they had been dead. There
are evidences show that servants and retainers were forced to take some drugs which can make
them in a drug induced state. So they were just walking into the tomb without revolt [1][2].
In the low land Yucatec Maya especially in Chichen Itza, there are some natural limestone pits and
sinkholes which were called cenotes. Archaeologists have already found human remains in these
areas. Cenotes were called virgin water that were places of Maya human sacrifice. Ball game was

The Importance Of Scientific Qualities And Scientific...
According to the grade scale that is laid out in the science lesson plan one student received a D
grade, one student received a C grade, twenty five students received a B grade, and two students
received an A grade. Going with the science grade book data independently, only one student isn t at
mastery level and would need the content re taught to them. The objective states that the student
will need to identify human qualities and scientific habits of mind that famous scientists in history
may have possessed. First, let s break the meaning down for human qualities and scientific habits of
the mind to understand if the formative assessment aligns with the objective. Human qualities are
being empathetic, intuitive, creative, passionate, a good listener, and persuasive (Gabriel Petit,
2014). Scientific habits of the mind are as follows; logical thinking, quantitative learning, deductive
reasoning, proper questioning, and reliance of sound evidence (Scientific Habits of Mind, 2017).
After evaluating the questions only one question would coincide with this objective. The remaining
five questions have to do with events or details of the three scientists lives.
The standards attached to this lesson plan states the student should develop abilities necessary to do
scientific inquiry and understand scientific inquiry. Students should also be able to develop an
understanding of science as a human endeavor and the history of science. Again, the formative

A Survey Report On Malaysian Diaspora
Introduction
To better understand what media sources the Singaporean diaspora uses to find out about news
back home in Singapore, I conducted a survey amongst Singaporeans based overseas, namely in
places such as Australia, the United States, some countries in South East Asia and also in Europe.
The demographics used were age based, dispersed mainly among working class adults and
university students.
The survey resulted in a 40% readership of www.straitstimes.com, the online version of Singapore s
leading newspaper The Straits Times and a 27% readership of another website, which is also a
subsidiary of the Straits Times, called Stomp. Going from these numbers, one can say that the
bulk of Singaporeans overseas still rely heavily on the online version of The Straits Times for
news back home in Singapore. From here, I can conclude that the key media outlet utilised by
Singaporeans overseas would be the StraitsTimes.com. My survey also includes the purposes of
these sites, namely what Singaporeans use these sites for and how much whether or not they
consider these sources to be relevant.
In this essay, I intend to analyse the The Straits Times and its online counterpart,
www.straitstimes.com , as well as its other subsidiary STOMP (Straits Times Online Mobile Print).
Given the premise that www.straitstimes.com is reflective of its parent, The Straits Times, it is
imperative that we analyse The Straits Times as a whole, taking into consideration that in the end

The Issue Of Animal Rights Essay
Animals have the right to equal consideration in regards to their being used for human needs as
most people use animals for their own needs on a daily basis even if only indirectly whether to
entertain us, or to attain the product we are using, or on our dinner plate. The controversy of the
treatment of animals range from some activists and philosophers that are outspoken against
animals being used by humans in any way for our own personal needs, while others are candid in
their belief that animals are here solely for meeting our needs and have no rights at all. Although
everyone is able to tailor their actions to fit their moral, ethical and individual beliefs, and many
different categories of unique diets have come about from the freedom of defining personal
standards it is a controversial topic. With vegetarian and vegan diets , becoming more and more
common deciding what is morally justifiable in respects to the treatment of animals is an essential
issue for everyone. The dispute of animal rightsis essentially focused on what rights animals
deserve to have and how they should be treated in regards to being experimented on, for humans
entertainment, and their being used as livestock. A controversial issue in the debate of animal
rights is the health of the people that do not consume animals or animal products and those that do.
A large area of the debate is centered around the fact that is widely believed that meatfrom animals

The Importance Of Astronomy And Astrology
Since the early Egyptians, people have been trying to read the stars. Have you ever looked at the
stars yourself, and wondered what it all means? Today, most people might know their star sign
according to their birthday. You might have even read a horoscope once or twice. However,
astrology in and of itself is not to be trusted. Astronomy on the other hand, is the actual scienceused
to encompass our big, endless skies. Astronomy is the study of the universeand its subject matter
outside of Earth s atmosphere, while Astrologyendeavors to study how the universe and its contents
(such as constellations and planetary systems), might directly relate to humans and the events
surrounding each person s life. (Temming) Seeing these definitions, we can come to the conclusion
Astronomy should be trusted as it is based on proven science, has numerous scientific implications,
and realistic applications. Astrology however, has no scientific basis and should only be treated as
nothing more than a novelty. The first point on how astronomy should be trusted over astrology is
because the study of astronomy is well respected among the scientific community, and is based on
facts. Astronomy is commonly known by most as the study of constellations and the universe.
Astronomers examine movements, positioning, and the composition of celestial bodies, while
basing their information on research and observation. Nola Taylor Redd gives us a good idea of
astronomy in What is Astronomy? Definition

Teaching, learning and assessment are good and reflect students improving success rates. College
strategies to improve retention and hence success rates are taking effect, and in year retention is
now high. Students progression to a higher level of study and to employment is good.
Teachers use their good subject knowledge and extensive industrial experience effectively to
enhance students understanding and awareness. Teachers draw on their own experiences in the
industry to illustrate key points in the lesson. In one lesson on computer numerical control (CNC)
machines, the teacher emphasised the need to manufacture engineering components using CNC
machines more competitively. He demonstrated effectively the industry practice of changing
several parameters on CNC machines to achieve the required objectives.
In practical lessons, students work independently, productively and safely. Most students produce a
good standard of work. They make good progress and develop appropriate occupational skills. In a
lesson in fabrication and welding, students produced a variety of high quality engineering
components. In the minority of lessons, teachers pay insufficient attention to developing students
underpinning knowledge. For example, in a lesson on turning , several students were unable to
state the type of material they were using. In another lesson, a few students did not know the
application of the engineering products that they were manufacturing.

The High School Dropout Rate
1. If society were to reduce the local high school dropout rate, then I believe that society could
progress rapidly with more skilled thinkers in the workforce. When a student drops out of high
school, he or she is far less likely to succeed. This is due to the fact that most, if not all, skilled jobs
that earn a decent living salary require a high schooldiploma at the very least. By decreasing the
local high school dropoutrate, our society would be giving those would be dropouts an opportunity

The current situation of high school students dropping out has been steadily declining since the
early 1990 s. This could serve society very well if that trend continues to a point where dropping
out of high school become relatively unheard of. A social dysfunction of high school is that it
creates a class system between those with a high school diploma and those without one. The
manifest function of high school is to provide people with the skills and critical thinking ability
to obtain some type base level skilled work as well as provides a way to help keep kids safe and
out of trouble. In contrast, a high school dropout would have none of those functions and would
likely not be employed in skilled work and as a result might have to turn to criminal activities for
an income.
I do not believe that there is any group that benefits from high school students dropping out.
People who drop out of high school will usually have to rely on government subsidies, which in
turn will burden the general population due to higher taxes. I believe that if the high school
dropout rate were to be less than one percent, then society would progress more rapidly due to
more skilled thinkers in the workforce. One of the ways that this could be done is by addressing
what I believe to be the main cause of dropping out which is a lack of academic support. If students
who appeared to be struggling were given more tutoring and after school educational programs, then
they might not feel

white females were considered to be of a higher status than black women at the time, they were
looked upon as possessions and as second class citizens. At this point in the novel, the boys are
shoved to the center of the circle, surrounded by the men. The fear that the boys and the narrator
feel is obvious in his descriptions, as is the uncertainty of their situation. When they see the
naked white woman they are in an unfeasible disagreement, as he says, Then I became aware of
the clarinet playing and the big shots yelling at us. Some threatened us if we looked and others
if we did not, (Ellison, 16). The vivid image of these powerful men threatening the boys is all too
real. Through his writing, we can sense his conflict as he describes the way the dancer looks,
and we can also tell he is attracted to her by the way he describes the curves of her body. Yet we
can also see that the dancer herself is in as much uncertainty as the boys; the narrator tells us
how the woman is chased and harrassed by the men, who grabbed her and toss her into the air,
and that through her facade he can see, ...above her, fixed smiling lips i saw the terror and disgust
in her eyes, almost like my own terror and that which I saw in some of the other boys, (Ellison, 17).
It is this piercing imagery that allows the narrator to communicate the appalling situation he is

Normative Context Of Advice
In Goldsmith and Fitch s 1997 article The Normative Context of Advice as Social Support the
dilemmas associated with giving, seeking, and taking advice are examined. The overarching goal
of this study is to analyze what the normative actions of support, specifically advice, are. The
research questions that were taken into consideration are as follows: what goals are pursued as
people ask for, and give, advice; what identity and relational implications of advice shape givers and
receivers reactions to advice; and what situational, conversational, and cultural constraints are
relevant to participants evaluation of advice? (Goldsmith Fitch, 1997) Multiple dilemmas were
found pertaining to advice including honesty versus support, caring vesrsus intrusive, and respect
versus autonomy. Each of these qualities are present in every interaction in which advice is given,
asked for, or received. As for the first pair of qualities, honesty and support, it manifests itself in the
situation. How the advice is taken is dependent on the present circumstances, rather than on
relational context. For example, if someone were to ask to be brutally honest, this does not
constitute perpetual honesty; instead, it allows a temporary period during which being... Show more

Furthermore, it would be great to break down the population into subgroups of males and females. I
think this could yield some interesting results because of the communication differences between
genders. Deborah Tannen makes some interesting points about this in her book You Just Don t
Understand. I believe that it is possible that women are more likely to take advice as caring than
men because they tend to focus on the cooperative aspect of a relationship, whereas men tend to
focus on the competitive aspect (Tannen, 1990). Then, the gender of the person receiving the
advice would impact the response to

Laura Hillenbrand Unbroken Quotes
I ve always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come, said Michael Jordan. Laura
Hillenbrand s Unbroken was about a boy named Louie Zamperini. He started off as a troubled
young child, but in his teen years Louies brother Pete helped him find a love for running. He had
dreams of being an olympic runner, but his hopes and dreams were crushed when he got drafted
into WWII, and eventually got lost at sea and captured by enemy forces. When Louie loses he
decides he will suffer through the hard training to get the redemption that he needs. Louie will
push him and his body past its limits to get what he wants. A lifetime of glory is worth a moment
of pain, said Louie (Hillenbrand 35). This quote shows that Louie was willing

Summary Of The Canterbury Tales By Geoffrey Chaucer
Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales, a collection of short tales in the 14th century.
The compilation of stories is told by pilgrims on the journey within the narrative as part of a
game proposed by the host. Each individual must tell two stories of their journey. My favorite
pilgrim was the Franklin. The Franklin was a gentry landowner, member of the nobility, who
had extensive holdings. He belonged to the middle class and was a man of leisure. Chaucer
described him as White as a daisy petal was his beard. A sanguine man, high colored and benign
(line 342 343). The Franklin sported a white beard and carried a dagger and a white silk purse.
He had a cheerful personality and was confident. His only reason to be on this pilgrimage was to
enjoy himself. The Franklin was traveling with the Man of Law. According to Chaucer he He
loved a morning sop of cake in wine. He lived for pleasure and had always done ( line 344). I
think that Chaucer had a good opinion of the Franklin. The way that Chaucer describes the
Franklin makes the reader think that Chaucer likes him. He says that The Franklin is calm,
strong and an overall a cheerful guy. Chaucer also proves that he thinks highly of the Franklin by
saying, He was a model among landed gentry (line 369 370). He lives to please others and has a
house full of food. The Franklin, according to Chaucer, had an overall great sense of hospitality.
The Franklin s deadly sin was gluttony. He liked to overindulge himself

White Collar Crime And White Collar Crimes
White collar crimes have very distinguishing features that convey a different standard than any
other set of crimes that are committed within the judicial system. Consequently, these features are
what make white collar crimes not only hard to identify that a crime has occurred, but also the cost
and extent of the crimes. First white collar crimes are not oblivious to those around them, unlike
street crimes where you realize that a crime has been committed. Unlike a murder or burglary, the
signs that a crime has been committed are seen quickly. White collar crimes like embezzlement,
health care fraud, mortgage fraud may not be uncovered for an extended period if not ever. Thus,
knowing the crime has been committed leads to the understanding of the perpetrators of the crime
being discovered. Moreover, the alleged perpetrator of the white collar crimehas legitimate access
to items involved in the crimes. Within common antisocial behavior those crimes have a
perpetrator that can be identified due to the fact a crime was discovered and they don t have a
legitimate reason to be somewhere or have access to things. Even with white collar crimes being
discovered those who are perpetrating them are harder to identify due to the lapse in discovery
and the understand of the complexity of the crimes. With all crimes, there is a victim to be found.
However, with white collar crimes this becomes a very complicated issue, unlike ordinary street
crimes where are victim is readily

Frank Tannenbaum s Theory Of The Labeling Theory
Once a person is labelled as a deviant, it is hard to remove that label. The Labeling Theory
basically says that no behavior is deeply rooted on its own. It is society s reaction to the behavior
that makes the act deviant or not. Labeling is to give someone or something to a category and is
usually given mistakenly. The people who usually doing the labeling have statues, numbers,
power and authority. People with low status, power and authority are the ones that are being
labeled. Dramatization of evil was the concept brought forward by Frank Tannenbaum, a big
Labelling Theory theorist. He only presented his development of the Labeling Theory in reply of
his work with juveniles partaking in street gang activities. He thought of the labelling theory as the
process of digging, tagging, identifying, segregating, describing, emphasizing, making conscious
and self conscious... (Hagan, 2017, p. 162). Tannenbaum believes that this theory can change a
person s identity from a doer of evil to an actual evil person evil person. BECKER Edwin Lemert
was another big theorist of the Labeling Theory. He had studied check forgers to bring him to his
conclusion about the Labeling Theory. From his check forging study, Lemert concluded that the
forger s criminal career had only begun after they were labelled a criminal (Knutsson, 1978).
Lemert made the distinction between primary and secondary deviance. Г‰mile Durkheim said that
deviance is normal and it is important to society. Durkheim had

Steve Harmon Character Analysis
CHARACTER DESCRIPTION INVOLVEMENT Steve Harmon Steve Harmon is a 16 year
old black man who is being convicted of felony murder and participating in a holdup at a
drugstore. Steve grew up in a bad neighborhood and on multiple occasions admired the tough
thug guys and even wanted to be like King (pg 96). His flashbacks show us that Steve did talk to
King, Johnny and Cruz about a planned holdup, (pg 50) though in court he outright lies and says
that he never talked to either one of them about anything important enough to remember (pg
226). When in prison, Steve is terrified of the other guys and guards (pg 96) and gives us the
impression that he is innocent and doesn t belong there. Steve wants to make himself different
than the other guys in his mind and the mind of the jury, but he goes through hard times where
he sees himself as just another criminal (pg 129.) He proves to be a pretty good kid in his film
class with Mr. Sawicki (pg 234) and loves his little brother, Jerry (pg 58). Steve sees himself as a
good person, though he admits that he has made mistakes. Steve s biggest struggle throughout the
novel is against his moral, as he tries to figure out if he really he is a monster like Petrocelli
called him. Filmmaking becomes his way of coping with the environment while on trial. Through
his screenplay his can separate himself from his inner and outer fears and make sense of his
experience. Filmmaking allows Steve to look at things from an outside perspective. Kathy

The first hip hop pioneers, such as DJ Kool Herc, realized that in the parties they were throwing in the Bronx, playing disco and funk music, people were responding very well to how he played the music. These technics were born out of an effort to isolate these bits of music that were thrilling the crowd, and repeat them in order to make the parties more fun. Compare And Contrast John Meany And Owen Meany Owen Meany and John Wheelwright; Effect of Spirituality A Prayer for Owen Meany analyzes the relationship between various depths of spirituality in comparison to mundane life. The novel by John Irving uses characters such as Owen Meany and John Wheelwright, to juxtapose the contrasting nature of faith and doubt, and fate and free will. John Wheelwright s and Owen Meany s differing attributes highlight the use of contrast within A Prayer for Owen Meany. While Owen Meany tends to be a leader, John is a follower where his primary experiences tend to be due to Owen. Furthermore, their different appearances further illustrate their differences while John is a typical male, Owen appears childlike in stature with a rodent quality to his appearance. Consequently, these comparisons between the two characters highlight the underlying theme of spirituality within the novel. Owen Meany has a continuing belief in God, even taking it as far as saying that God has a specific plan for him. GOD HAS TAKEN YOUR MOTHER. MY HANDS WERE THE INSTRUMENT. GOD HAS TAKEN MY HANDS. I AM GOD S INSTRUMENT (page 90) This quote illustrates the absolute belief that Owen has in God; despite the fact that Owen has taken the life from Tabitha Wheelwright, mother of Johnny, he chalks it up to fate and God s will. Hollomon Jaffe equation H=T(c+logвЃЎt ) is widely used to predict hardness with different tempering temperature and tempering time. T is the tempering temperature, t is the tempering time and c is the constant for the specific steel. The physical explanation of c constant was not clear. In this paper, the hardness and c/a ratio of tempered martensitefor AISI 4140 were measured by X Ray Diffraction and Rietveld refinement. The result reveals that the c/a ratio decreases instantly within the first 60s tempering time. After analysis based on the experiment results and derivation of Hollomon Jaffe equation, c, the parameter in Hollomon Jaffe equation, is found to stand for the slope of carbon hardness curve. Key words: Tempering, martensite, X ray diffraction, Hollomon Jaffe equation 1. Introduction All steels that are hardened are subjected to a subcritical heat treatment referred to as tempering . • 12. Different Ways Of Implementing Css Styles Into Html Dean Cartner CSS (P1) There are 3 different ways of implementing CSS styles into html. These are internal, external and inline. External is when you have a file that only contains CSS code in it and is saved with .css at the end. External sheets are referenced in the HTML code using link . You need to link it from all HTML pages. Doing so means you only need to set the styles once. This comes in useful if you want to change the styles later on as you only have to do it in the one place. This is an example. Internal is when you place all the CSS code in the head section of the code so between head and /head . As opposed to the external css you don t need to create a rule for each HTML element. This is an example of internal CSS code. Inline is CSS style that is applied to only one element by using the style attributes which means you can only apply the style you want to a certain instance. These are fairly straight forward and quick to make which means you don t have to create a seperate document or create a new element for it in the head section. This is an example. (M1) I am going to explain functions, advantages and disadvantages of External and Inline which are two different ways to implement CSS. There are several advantages for using external CSS including the fact that it gives you total control of the layout and structure of your page which allows you to keep the website and the content separate in your code. ... To these thinkers, the existence of any evil in the world would have to be a sign that God is either not entirely good or not all powerful, and the idea of an imperfect God is nonsensical. These philosophers took for granted that God exists, and concluded that since God must be perfect, the world he created must be perfect also. According to these philosophers, people perceive imperfections in the world only because they do not understand God s grand plan. Through the appearance of the Rosa Moschata, poetically associated with the wild, but in fact known only through human horticulture, the poem s circle of origins from the source of divine inspiration to the deep delved earth of the grape vine closes in what appears to be the subjugation of nature under aesthetics. • 23. Human Sacrifice In Ancient Egyptian Culture Human sacrifice Yizhuo Chen 12/21/2016 Human sacrifice is an important matter and human behavior in prehistory in the evolution of ancient civilization. It is the act of killing human. Usually human sacrifice comes with deity as a ritual activity. Throughout history, human sacrifice has been practiced in diverse cultures and different civilizations. As far as I know, there are some bizarre methods of human sacrificein history. In Ancient Egypt, pharaohs had the highest positions in Egyptian society not only in religion but also in politics. In early pharaonic civilization, as long as pharaohs deceased, pharaohs were buried with their servants and retainers. This behavior is cruel and violent because servants and retainers were still alive when they were buried. All the people in Ancient Egypt had a common view with the belief that servants and retainers still could serve their owner after they had been dead. There are evidences show that servants and retainers were forced to take some drugs which can make them in a drug induced state. So they were just walking into the tomb without revolt [1][2]. In the low land Yucatec Maya especially in Chichen Itza, there are some natural limestone pits and sinkholes which were called cenotes. Archaeologists have already found human remains in these areas. Cenotes were called virgin water that were places of Maya human sacrifice. Ball game was always held by Mayans in Chichen Itza, and it always came ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to the grade scale that is laid out in the science lesson plan one student received a D grade, one student received a C grade, twenty five students received a B grade, and two students received an A grade. Going with the science grade book data independently, only one student isn t at mastery level and would need the content re taught to them. The objective states that the student will need to identify human qualities and scientific habits of mind that famous scientists in history may have possessed. First, let s break the meaning down for human qualities and scientific habits of the mind to understand if the formative assessment aligns with the objective. Human qualities are being empathetic, intuitive, creative, passionate, a good listener, and persuasive (Gabriel Petit, 2014). Scientific habits of the mind are as follows; logical thinking, quantitative learning, deductive reasoning, proper questioning, and reliance of sound evidence (Scientific Habits of Mind, 2017). After evaluating the questions only one question would coincide with this objective. The remaining five questions have to do with events or details of the three scientists lives. The standards attached to this lesson plan states the student should develop abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry and understand scientific inquiry. Students should also be able to develop an understanding of science as a human endeavor and the history of science. Again, the formative assessment doesn t ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. A Survey Report On Malaysian Diaspora Introduction To better understand what media sources the Singaporean diaspora uses to find out about news back home in Singapore, I conducted a survey amongst Singaporeans based overseas, namely in places such as Australia, the United States, some countries in South East Asia and also in Europe. The demographics used were age based, dispersed mainly among working class adults and university students. The survey resulted in a 40% readership of www.straitstimes.com, the online version of Singapore s leading newspaper The Straits Times and a 27% readership of another website, which is also a subsidiary of the Straits Times, called Stomp. Going from these numbers, one can say that the bulk of Singaporeans overseas still rely heavily on the online version of The Straits Times for news back home in Singapore. From here, I can conclude that the key media outlet utilised by Singaporeans overseas would be the StraitsTimes.com. My survey also includes the purposes of these sites, namely what Singaporeans use these sites for and how much whether or not they consider these sources to be relevant. In this essay, I intend to analyse the The Straits Times and its online counterpart, www.straitstimes.com , as well as its other subsidiary STOMP (Straits Times Online Mobile Print). Given the premise that www.straitstimes.com is reflective of its parent, The Straits Times, it is imperative that we analyse The Straits Times as a whole, taking into consideration that in the end the popular media ... Today, most people might know their star sign according to their birthday. You might have even read a horoscope once or twice. However, astrology in and of itself is not to be trusted. Astronomy on the other hand, is the actual scienceused to encompass our big, endless skies. Astronomy is the study of the universeand its subject matter outside of Earth s atmosphere, while Astrologyendeavors to study how the universe and its contents (such as constellations and planetary systems), might directly relate to humans and the events surrounding each person s life. (Temming) Seeing these definitions, we can come to the conclusion Astronomy should be trusted as it is based on proven science, has numerous scientific implications, and realistic applications. Astrology however, has no scientific basis and should only be treated as nothing more than a novelty. The first point on how astronomy should be trusted over astrology is because the study of astronomy is well respected among the scientific community, and is based on facts. Astronomy is commonly known by most as the study of constellations and the universe. Astronomers examine movements, positioning, and the composition of celestial bodies, while basing their information on research and observation. College strategies to improve retention and hence success rates are taking effect, and in year retention is now high. Students progression to a higher level of study and to employment is good. Teachers use their good subject knowledge and extensive industrial experience effectively to enhance students understanding and awareness. Teachers draw on their own experiences in the industry to illustrate key points in the lesson. In one lesson on computer numerical control (CNC) machines, the teacher emphasised the need to manufacture engineering components using CNC machines more competitively. He demonstrated effectively the industry practice of changing several parameters on CNC machines to achieve the required objectives. In practical lessons, students work independently, productively and safely. Most students produce a good standard of work. They make good progress and develop appropriate occupational skills. In a lesson in fabrication and welding, students produced a variety of high quality engineering components. In the minority of lessons, teachers pay insufficient attention to developing students underpinning knowledge. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The current situation of high school students dropping out has been steadily declining since the early 1990 s. This could serve society very well if that trend continues to a point where dropping out of high school become relatively unheard of. A social dysfunction of high school is that it creates a class system between those with a high school diploma and those without one. The manifest function of high school is to provide people with the skills and critical thinking ability to obtain some type base level skilled work as well as provides a way to help keep kids safe and out of trouble. In contrast, a high school dropout would have none of those functions and would likely not be employed in skilled work and as a result might have to turn to criminal activities for an income. I do not believe that there is any group that benefits from high school students dropping out. People who drop out of high school will usually have to rely on government subsidies, which in turn will burden the general population due to higher taxes. I believe that if the high school dropout rate were to be less than one percent, then society would progress more rapidly due to more skilled thinkers in the workforce. Normative Context Of Advice In Goldsmith and Fitch s 1997 article The Normative Context of Advice as Social Support the dilemmas associated with giving, seeking, and taking advice are examined. The overarching goal of this study is to analyze what the normative actions of support, specifically advice, are. The research questions that were taken into consideration are as follows: what goals are pursued as people ask for, and give, advice; what identity and relational implications of advice shape givers and receivers reactions to advice; and what situational, conversational, and cultural constraints are relevant to participants evaluation of advice? (Goldsmith Fitch, 1997) Multiple dilemmas were found pertaining to advice including honesty versus support, caring vesrsus intrusive, and respect versus autonomy. Each of these qualities are present in every interaction in which advice is given, asked for, or received. As for the first pair of qualities, honesty and support, it manifests itself in the situation. How the advice is taken is dependent on the present circumstances, rather than on relational context.
