Imagine you were one of the 300,000 child soldiers from as young as even 7 years old who served
in one of the many armed forces where you would fight and kill many innocent people thinking you
were doing it for a good cause. Everyday of your life you see dead bodies you and your rebel group
have killed. Many children under the age of 18 go to sleep with peace and love, some children go to
sleep knowing they are in a war where they are killing innocent lives. While this is happening, there
has been an increase in number and in power of multiple rebel groups. Children are forced by
commanders through drugs and things which you can't even imagine, to kill innocent civilians, and
even their own families. There are multiple perspectives on this issue and this issue has yes and no
for amnesty and not amnesty. Some critics say that some child soldiers are perpetrators and some
believe that child soldiers know that they are killing innocent people which some child soldiers
believe killing is right. However, I do believe in the critics who say that some child soldiers are not
innocent. I do believe that some who are older than the age of 13 years old and can take
consequences for their killing and do know what they are doing. But those that are under 13 years
old are innocent and still lack mental maturity and don't understand what they are doing which

Introduction The author of this book, Ishmael Beah was forced to become a child soldier at 12 years
old due to the civil war occurring in his home country of Sierra Leone which first began in 1991.

soldiers to a rehabilitation center in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Although hesitant at first,
Ishmael eventually began to trust the workers and took a special liking to Esther, a nurse who
played an integral role in his rehabilitation. By September of 1996, Ishmael was rehabilitated and
was speaking in front of the UN where he discussed the effects of war on children and shared his

America some believe they are oppressed, and while no society is perfect, the excellent conditions
in this country do not even compare to that of many other countries worldwide. Citizens of this
wonderful country will never fully understand how fortunate they are unless they change their
perspective and educate themselves about the realities of those in other countries, like Uganda for

they were forced to be sent to fight in the war at such a young age. But in Sierra Leone, that is not

Fear has a huge impact on this book because it is a common emotion people would feel during a
civil war. For instance, "Often, my shadow would scare me and cause me to run for miles.
Everything felt awkwardly brutal. Even the air seemed to want to attack me and break my neck"
(Beah 49). This quote shows the concern and fear a person would have during a time of war.
Ishmael constantly had to look over his shoulder and worry about his safety. However, another tone

Child Soldiers Movie Analysis
The movie preview appeals to the emotional part of the audience through featuring scenes that the
audiences are bound to find sad. The movie preview features different scenes where child soldiers
are highlighted, thus showing integral parts of the film and highlighting the theme of the film. For
instance, one of the scenes is featured 15 years, later on, the former child soldier; Kane is now a
grown man. Things have not changed that much for him and he still lives in the forest. But this time
around he is not a defenseless child; he is a leader with an army of soldiers who are rebels like him.
They are all people in the community who feel that the new government is not rightful and wish to
overthrow it. This scene is less sad, though they live in the forests, the soldiers are seen dancing,
drinking and enjoying the company of women who support their cause. The soldiers are not learned,
and from time to time they keep getting into fights with each other and Kane is forced to come and
break them up.
The film also features a logical approach that results in the revelation of various themes in the film.
There are different themes that are bound to be explored in the movie preview, including the theme
of leadership. Kane is shown as a strong respectable leader, although he lives on the outside of the
