Trace elements serve as regulators of biological
processes in the ocean, influencing marine
ecosystem dynamics and the carbon cycle.
GEOTRACES is an international programme with a
mission to identify processes and quantify fluxes
that control the distributions of key trace elements
and isotopes in the ocean, and to establish the
sensitivity of these distributions to changing
environmental conditions www.geotraces.org.
Scientists from approximately 30 nations are involved in the
programme (Figure 1), which is designed to study all major
ocean basins over the next decade

Figure 1. GEOTRACES Science plan

Arctic GEOTRACES

The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and shallowest of the world
oceans but globally important and very unique because:
- Arctic rivers contribute ~10% of global river runoff
- Arctic tundra contain ~33% of the world’s soil carbon
- Arctic shelves represent ~25% of global shelf area
The Arctic is sensitive to and a key area for understanding global change
At a workshop in Delmenhorst Germany in 2009 an
overall plan for an Arctic GEOTRACES programme
was presented (Figure 2).
Currently, there is an international effort to
conduct a larger GEOTRACES programme in
the Arctic Ocean during 2015. Several countries
including Canada, Germany, Sweden, Russia,
United Kingdom will meet in Vancouver, May 2012
for detailed planning
