- 2. What is an Archive? • Definition: An archive is a collection of historical records, or the physical place they are located. Archives contain primary source documents that have accumulated over the course of an individual or organization's lifetime, and are kept to show the function of an organization.
- 3. Task 1 • In groups of 2, list every form of archive that you can think of, and where you think you may find them
- 4. How is an archive collection usually used? Task 2 Again, in the same groups of 2, list every form of use for an archive collection that you can think of
- 5. So what is a mashup? • Definition of the word mashup = Content containing any or all of text, graphics, audio, video and animation drawn from pre-existing sources, to create a new derivative work. Digital mashups represent a new phase in the re-use of existing works not so much conceptually as in ease of use

- Here we ask the expert – Owain, where do you have requests to use the archive from? So now we understand the archive part in the course title, but what about the next part?
- It’s something that’s become increasingly popular over the past few years (with the rise of the internet, specifically youtube) – and has been used in a plethora of ways – to advertise, to promote, as a music video, as a promotional vehicle, to sell a product, as fan fiction, as fake movies and so on and so on. See the examples on the next page as some ways that people are using mashups -
