CENTRE POMPIDOU PARIS 11 • The ideawas to make a multicultural complex, bringing together in one place different forms of Art and Literature • Rogers and Piano design was selected through an International competition and among 681 competition entries • Major example of an inside out building, with its structural , mechanical and circulation systems exposed on the exterior of the building • Design was meant to be not a building but a town where you find everything – Lunch,Great Art, a Library and great music • Initially all of the functional elements were color coded: Green pipes are plumbing, Blue ducts are for climate control, electrical wires are encased in yellow and circulation elements & devices for safety are red • The center spread over a land area of 5 acres was built in 1977 • It is the home to the National Museum ofArts and is internationally renowned for its 20th and 21st century art collections • Pompidou concept is about celebrating the life of cities and bringing energy to their center, through a combination of flight to the suburbs and destructive planning, traditional cities endangered in need of such support BUILDINGS

- 31. 31 • This culturalcentre celebrates the vernacular Kanak culture and the indigenous culture of New Caledonia blending the linguistic and artistic heritage of the Kanak people • The Kanak building tradition and the resources of modern international architecture were blended by Piano • The building is surrounded by landscaping which is also inspired by the traditional Kanak design elements • The formal curved axial layout, 205m long on top of the ridge, contain ten large conical cases or pavilion all of different dimensions patterned on the traditional Kanak Grand Hut design • The buildings spread over an area of 8550 meters square were conceived to incorporate the link between the landscape and the built structures in the Kanak tradition • Planning aimed at a unique building which would create a symbol, a cultural centre devoted to Kanak civilization, a place that would pass on their memory to the grandchildren BUILDINGS

- 37. 37 • It isa 95 ey sky scraper that forms the part of Shard Quarter Development • Standing at 309.6m, it is the sixth tallest building in the United Kingdom • Renzo Piano designed it as a spire like sculpture emerging from River Thames, inspired from the railway line next to the site • He considered the slender spire like form of the tower a positive addition to the London sky line recalling the church steeples featured in historic engravings of the city . • Sophisticated use of glazing, with expressive façade of angled glass panes intended to reflect sunlight above and the sky above, so that the appearance • of the building will change according to the weather • The building is designed to maintain stability under very onerous condition, with its post tension concrete and composite floors, load bearing pillars and tapering shape giving it a sway tolerance of 400mm • It is an energy efficient building as fuel is converted to electricity, and heat is recovered from the engine to provide hot water for the building BUILDINGS

KANSAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT OSAKA JAPAN 45 • KansaiAirportis located on a specially built island in the bay of Osaka • It’s a long and light structure designed to withstand the violent earthquakes that often affect this region of Japan • A notable feature and one of the primary importance in the organization of the airport, is the unobstructed thanks to the uninterrupted lines of vision through the open departures level main terminal building. The long terminal building gently curves, lifting in the middle and decreasing at either end, so that it doesn't interfere with lines of sight for the control tower. • KansaiAirport rests upon the island like glider seen in plan – the main body of the Airport forming its fuselage and the boarding gates positioned in its wings. • All of KansaiAirports 82 000 Stainless Steel panels of the roof are identical. AIRPORT • The high-tech architecture movement, of which the Italian architect Piano was a key proponent, was defined by buildings that utilised the latest developments in technology and industrial design. • Japan's Kansai InternationalAirport, with its asymmetrical clear-span roof and visible structure, demonstrates many of the movement's qualities. It was built on an artificial island three miles offshore so that it can run 24 hours a day, without disturbing the residents of Osaka. • Since it opened in 1994, the 1.1 mile long terminal has held the title of the longest airport in the world.

EIGHTY SEVEN PARK 53 • Located inNorth Beach in Miami, Florida, Eighty Seven Park will be a luxury condominium, and Renzo Piano’s first residential project in the western hemisphere. • Set to be completed in 2018, the project seeks to seamlessly blend sky, sea and ground, addressing both the ocean and nearby 35-acre park. Seventy apartments ranging in size from 1400 to 7000 square feet sit atop two lush parks with uninterrupted ocean views. PARIS COURTHOUSE 56 • Situated onthe northern edge of central Paris, the newTribunal de Paris will regroup various facilities currently dispersed around the capital, becoming the largest law courts complex in Europe. • The building takes the form of a slim, transparent, 160m tower of stacked volumes of decreasing size, carefully laid out for efficiency and ease of use. • Situated in the urban development zone of Clichy–Batignolles on the northern edge of Paris, the site is at a key intersection between the different administrative areas of Paris and its suburbs • It is also well connected by public transport, including the northern stretch of the highly successful new tramway. • The scale of the building is reduced by breaking it down into four superimposed volumes of decreasing size, the first of which, long and low, fits in readily with the proportions of Haussmann’s Paris. MAINFLOORPLAN This 5,500 sqm (59,200 sq ft) space is punctuated by three atria – one large central atrium (64m x 16m, larger still for the first four storeys) and smaller north and south atria (16m x 16m), which reach the full height of this first section of the building, daylight pouring in from the glazed skylights in the roof terrace above. Circulation areas of subsequent floors give onto the atria. NEMO SCIENCE MUSEUM 60 • This fascinatingconstruction, with an illustrious name: NEMO, often compared to a ship, is the largest Science centre in the Netherlands. • The museum has five floors dedicated to practical science exhibitions.The fifth floor or upper deck has a restaurant, a cafeteria, a playground for children and a great view of the surroundings of the city. • The museum has its origins in 1923 and since 1997 it is located in a building designed by Renzo Piano. • The exterior of the building can be described as striking piano called the interior a ‘noble factory’.With neutral gray walls and visible cables and pipes. . CONCEPT 61 • Surrounded bywater, the buildings is shaped like a ship and pre-oxidized copper clad facades, referring to the surrounding port. • The curvature of the tunnel on which it was built acted as a base and was also the inspiration for the curved shape of the building itself. • In a kind of mathematical mirror image of the traffic that descends into the tunnel, the architect designed a building that seems to rise and rise from the water. • The ascending shape also reflects a nautical influence, while green copper is widely used in historic buildings along the docks.PROJECTS – NEMO SCIENCE MUSEUM
