Appendicitis is the most common non-obstetric surgical condition during pregnancy. While its overall incidence is lower during pregnancy, the risk of perforation is higher in pregnant women which can lead to more complications. A timely diagnosis of appendicitis in pregnant women can be challenging due to the anatomical changes during pregnancy and similarities in symptoms to normal pregnancy. Physical examination, blood tests, and imaging techniques like ultrasound and CT scans are used to diagnose appendicitis during pregnancy. Early surgical intervention, whether through laparoscopy or laparotomy, is important to prevent perforation and its increased risks. With proper treatment, the prognosis for both mother and baby is generally good.
