Dr. Robert Rutledge conducted a study of 303 lower weight diabetic patients with BMIs between 21-35 who underwent a tailored mini-gastric bypass (MGB) surgery. The tailored MGB involved a larger gastric pouch and shorter bypass length than a standard MGB. The results found that 98% of patients saw resolution of their diabetes and were able to stop all oral medications, while the remaining 2% saw improvement. The conclusions were that the tailored MGB is well-suited for treating diabetes in lower weight patients by allowing for customized weight loss and a beneficial effect on glucose metabolism.
