Who s the Real Monster?
The story of Frankenstein was written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley in the year
1818. The story depicts the life of the character Victor Frankenstein, who spends
years creating an unnamed creature. Victor abandons the creature the moment he
awakens and the creature is then left to live life on his own because is rejected by
humanity. The creature kills several people and eventually leads to Victor s indirect
death. Throughout the story, the creature is depicted as a hideous, monstrous and evil
creature, while Victor is depicted as the victim of his wrath. At first glance, the
creature seems like the bigger monster of the story, but as we begin to view it from a
deeper perspective we discover a different side. In this essay, I plan to argue that
contrary to popular belief, Victor Frankensteinis the real monster of the story.
The Oxford Dictionary defines the word monster as an An inhumanly cruel or
wicked person. There were many cruel and wicked things that Victor did to the
creature. Firstly, Victor decided to give the creature a hideous body. Why would he
not create his specimen to be beautiful and well formed in every way? It was cruelty
on the behalf of Victor to hideously deform his creation. He made his creature to be a
hideously deformed monster which every human being shunned. Throughout the
story Victor also considers himself to have a God Complex. Victor would be

through observation of the role model, imitation of their behaviour and behaviour
shaping. Also they received sweets and praise as a form of positive vicarious
reinforcement thus meaning that there was a chance of repetition of the aggressive
behaviour outside the laboratory setting. The vicarious reinforcement is also a direct
consequence that will have an effect on the chances of the child repeating the
behaviour. As if the child was punished they would have been less likely to act
aggressively again.
On the other hand, it is possible to say that the children were manipulated into
responding aggressively towards the BoBo Doll as they were teased and may have
become frustrated because they could not touch the toys even though they had to
watch the role models playing however it is not actually stated how long the
children remained aggressive for. The experiment can be said to be unethical and
morally wrong because the children were trained to be aggressive, as they were
probably not used to watching adults behave some immaturely. Also as the
experiment was preformed in a laboratory it therefore lacks eco logical validity, as it
may not have real life consequences.

Conformity and Passivity in 20th Century Literature Through the 20th century, war,
technology, and the capitalism had lasting effects on the overall conformity and
passivity of society. Within the novel Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and the play
Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, the general stagnation, inauthenticity, and
cultural malaise are made evident in the main characters actions. Nonetheless, we
are not given an answer regarding whether or not we can reform these flaws. The
two works cause us to reflect on our own human tendency to conform and be passive.
Virginia Woolf s Clarissa Dalloway, for example, is an upper class house wife that
spends her days buying flowers and throwing parties. Beckett s Vladimir and Estragon
literally wait for Godot throughout the play without ever moving from the road on
which they sit. Although Woolf s setting is much more detailed than Beckett s, they
both signify the circular life that the main characters in both texts cannot break free
from, leaving humanity trapped by passivity and conformity.
While answers to these cultural iterations of conformity and passivity cannot
directly be found in either Beckett s or Woolf s text, we can turn toward 20th
