While pronunciation features of different ASEAN Englishes may cause occasional misunderstandings, overall intelligibility is generally high. Pronunciation differences tend to be in consonant substitutions and vowel realizations, with features shared across languages. Problems arise particularly when features not common to a listener's variety are used, such as the Burmese pronunciation of /p/ as [b].
