Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats facing us today.
Why it is relevant to you: without effective antibiotics many routine treatments will become increasingly dangerous. Setting broken bones, basic operations, even chemotherapy and animal health all rely on access to antibiotics that work.
What we want you to do: To slow resistance we need to cut the unnecessary use of antibiotics. We invite the public, students and educators, farmers, the veterinary and medical communities and professional organisations, to become Antibiotic Guardians.
Call to action: Choose one simple pledge about how you’ll make better use of antibiotics and help save these vital medicines from becoming obsolete.
This Manual of Procedures (MOP) was developed to assist and align the efforts in implementing AMS programs in all (Level I, II, and III) hospitals across the country. It seeks to serve as a guide to individual hospitals in the design and establishment of local AMS programs while providing a framework for national-level action and commitment.
Recommendations within this document are, as far as possible, based on review of published literature on strategies that have shown to be effective. Consultation with key members (Infectious Diseases physicians, clinical pharmacists, and Infection Control nurses) from eight (8) pilot hospitals as well as the National Antibiotic Guidelines Committee (NAGCom), other national Infectious Diseases societies and relevant DOH offices were undertaken to obtain a consensus opinion and ensure that this MOP is practical and feasible.
All attempts to consider the context of local culture and practices have been taken in the creation of this MOP. Nonetheless, we have chosen to only define core aspects of the national AMS program without being overly prescriptive. Hospitals are strongly encouraged to adapt this MOP to their individual setting in order to maximize its effectiveness, including reduce barriers to implementation and encourage shared ownership towards the goal of AMS.
Reduced viral reservoirs and sustained virologic control following early cART...Zeena Nackerdien
Dr. Persaud's original paper showed sustained remission in "the Mississipi HIV-1-infected baby" following ART. One possibility for the result may have been that the mother transmitted long-term non-progressive disease to the child (see comment by Dr. De Maria in NEJM, Feb 2014). In the latest paper from Luzuriaga, Persaud et al, the group shows that early, effective combination antiretroviral therapy significantly limits proviral and and replication-competent HIV-1 and promotes continuous decay of viral reservoirs.

Antibiotic resistance: causes, consequences and means to limit itGreenFacts
Over the last century, antibiotics have radically changed the
way we treat infections. They are an important tool for modern medicine, but unfortunately their misuse have led to the emergence of bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.
What has caused it and how can the spread of resistance be limited?
Antibiotic resistance is the ability of bacteria to resist the effects of an antibiotic. It is one of the world’s biggest public health problems We now know that an increasing number of patients are infected by micro-organisms which have developed a resistance to antimicrobial agents. This resistance is now a real threat to public health in world wide.
In India, bacteria that cause common infections, such as urinary tract and bloodstream infections, are becoming resistant to nearly all antibiotics. This resistance is due to a combination of factors: uncontrolled access to antibiotics, gaps in infection prevention and control (IPC) practices, and high rates of communicable diseases. Antibiotic resistance, or AR, is a serious problem throughout the country, and threatens to reduce the usefulness of antibiotics both in India and around the world.
Because of this emerging threat, India is committed to slowing the spread of AR. Two institutions within India’s Ministry of Health – the Indian Council of Medical Research and National Centre for Disease Control – each developed national networks of public and private hospitals to measure AR trends, prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), and enhance appropriate use of antibiotics. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences is coordinating HAI measurement and prevention efforts in both networks. In addition, efforts in the state of Tamil Nadu focus on building district-level IPC capacity to prevent HAIs, focusing on maternal and neonatal patients.
The Indian Governamnet is is working closely with partners at the national and state level to:
Detect AR pathogens, including novel strains, by developing lab networks and lab expertise.
Use standardized surveillance to monitor and track AR infections in healthcare to learn how often these infections occur and to help develop strategies to prevent them.
Implement focused IPC activities and training.
Optimize use and reduce misuse of critical antibiotics through antibiotic stewardship programs.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

1. Antibiotic Education
Dr.T.V.Rao MD
Antibiotic resistance is a global problem. We continue to read news stories about superbugs,
bacteria that are increasingly resistant to common antibiotics. This resistance is causing new
infections and making it difficult to treat others. The misuse of Antibiotic is more related to the
social issues like poverty, non-availability of protected water recurrent infections, lack of awareness
on hygiene and Individual precautions HAND WASHING to prevent many infections, and missing
the Doses of Vaccination, which lead to consequences of misuse of Antibiotics. Resistance occurs
when an antibiotic is no longer effective at killing or limiting the growth of bacteria. It can occur
naturally (innate ability or genetic mutation), or can be acquired through previous exposure to an
antibiotic or through contact with another organism that is resistant (transfer of resistance).
However India woke up to the issue of misuse of Antibiotics in big way with Indian Medical
Association promoting the issue of Misuse of Antibiotics. One of the major survey suggests that
patients represent a significant source of antibiotic misuse in the community. Most respiratory tract
infections were perceived as potentially severe, especially in people living in crowded conditions and
hence the prescription of an efficient therapy was expected. Some patients and many parents over
anxious about their children health exaggerate symptoms to get the prescription. However majority
of patients were willing to take antibiotics for conditions likely to have a viral origin, such as flu, sore
throat, cough, or earache. Data suggest that patients can exert pressures on doctors for antibiotic
prescriptions for common respiratory tract infections, which continues to be a major cause and that
we have to work to reduce consumption of antibiotics, The topic of Antibiotic Education should a
compulsory topic to all our Medical Students and many resident Doctors which incorporates the
idea of Catch them young. Doctors often prescribe a broad spectrum of antibiotics to patients as
they have to act quickly on insufficient information. These methods put selective pressure on
microbes to evolve a resistance to the medication. In the recent past, data has revealed a six -fold
increase in the number of antibiotics being popped by Indians. Many pharmaceutical companies
contributed their best in Antibiotic misuse promoting the Costly and broad spectrum antibiotics
luring the Doctors with many undeserved gifts and sponsoring trips abroad. Today many health
issues are guided by CDC Atlanta, advises We have to protect patients by protecting antibiotics," CDC
Director Dr. Tom Frieden says "The drugs we have today are in danger, and any new drugs we get
could be lost just as quickly if we don't improve the way we prescribe and use them. “CDC
researchers reviewed antibiotic prescriptions at more than 300 hospitals in 2010 and found more
than half of hospital patients got an antibiotic during their stay. Most prescriptions for antibiotics are
written for urinary tract infections, lung infections and infections caused by drug-resistant
Staphylococcus bacteria, such as MRSA.
To curb misuse and abuse of antibiotics in hospitals, the CDC recommends:
Appointing a doctor to lead a program on responsible antibiotic use.
Appointing a pharmacist to improve antibiotic prescribing.
Starting with at least one step, such as requiring prescriptions be reassessed within 48 hours.
Monitoring patterns of prescribing and antibiotic resistance.
Reporting data on prescribing and antibiotic resistance to doctors.
Educating doctors about the danger of antibiotic resistance.
2. The microbiologists are best resource persons in the Hospitals to predict the trends going in the
hospital about the growing pattern of resistance. A year back in the Hospital I work there was much
less resistance to 3rd generation cephalosporins, and Klebsiella spp are really emerging in more
numbers in resistant from, frequently in the patients on life support systems. Whatever is said and
done to control the Antibiotic resistance in major hospital and reference hospitals it is much more
difficult the aim of treating Physician remain with idea of saving a life whatever the means and least
scientific approaches are followed. We all need to be responsible about the antibiotics we take and
prescribe to our patients – using antibiotics to treat viral infections like a cold or flu, using antibiotics
too often, and not using antibiotics as prescribed, are all contributing to the problem. Use
antibiotics wisely to help protect your health and the health of your family and community. India’s
problem is due to no effective rule to curb the Chemists dispensing the medicines, and I think mass
education in India and many developing countries to impress all the public through the Multimedia
and Newspapers - Never take antibiotics without a prescription: As In many countries, it is
possible to get any antibiotics without a prescription. Using antibiotics when you don’t need them is
a significant contributor to antibiotic resistance and will not make you feel better. The problem of
putting restriction on antibiotic prescription will be herculean task, only ANTIBIOITC EUCATION
should evolve a major topic in Medical Education, can have some solutions to future, for
restricting on misuse of MUCH NEEDED ANTIBIOTICS IN TIME OF CRISIS. Think once before
prescribing an Antibiotic and patients should think twice on self -Medication with Antibiotics, can
have many solutions in future. In spite of many matters discussed yet there is no solution like HAND
WASHING WHICH ALONG CAN SAVE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE FROM INFECTIONS.
