The purpose of this Health Policy Study is to better understand adolescents’ views on what are considered core components of the medical home and identify barriers to promoting adolescent health in relation to the medical home.
In addition, this study sought to better understand the needs and challenges in providing adolescents with access to medical homes—from the perspective of both adolescents and experts in adolescent health and medical home policy. To accomplish these goals, researchers conducted focus groups with adolescents, presented these findings to experts, and gathered experts’ reactions to the adolescents’ perspectives. This report includes a detailed description of the methods used for this study, followed by a summary of key focus group findings and the expert reactions to these findings.

Preventing Unintended Pregnancy Among Adolescents: Using mHealth to Promote a...YTH
Health-E You/Salud iTu is an mHealth contraceptive decision support tool for adolescent girls. Through an interactive, youth-centered approach, the App provides accurate information (that can be updated in real-time), individually tailored feedback/messages, and a user-driven experience. Based on the youth’s preferences, and experiences, the App provides contraceptive recommendation(s) while also presenting the youth with all of the possible options including videos of providers and youth. Youth can then share information from the App with their provider to help them communicate their needs, interests and questions. In turn, the provider is better prepared for the face-to-face encounter. Pilot testing shows it is feasible to implement, acceptable to adolescents and providers; improves health knowledge; and visit quality. It is being evaluated at 14 school-based health centers using a longitudinal, cluster randomized control trial research design.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

2. Agenda
• Becoming a Pediatrician
• Patient Relationships
• Pediatricians as Advocates
• Rewards of a Career in Pediatrics
• Alumni Perspectives in Pediatrics
3. Becoming A Pediatrician
Step 1: Earn your Bachelor’s Degree
Step 2: Graduate from Medical School
Step 3: Complete a Pediatric Residency (3 years)
Step 4: Become Board Certified
4. What Makes a Good Pediatrician?
Genuine interest in the needs of children and
families
Ability to earn the trust of patients and their
parents and sustain relationships over time
Ability to work with dynamic teams and
practitioners across different specialties and
patient care settings
5. Using a Diverse Knowledge Foundation
• In comparison to other healthcare providers, pediatricians are
most likely to apply a wide range of basic sciences, including:
o Genetics
o Behavioral and developmental medicine
o Neurologic abnormalities and disorders
o Sport medicine
• Pediatricians cover acute infections and pathologies as well as
general development and general health maintenance.
• They often provide guidance on nutrition, allergies, and initial
counseling and are part of the first line assessment before
referring patients to specialists.
6. Meeting Your Patients
• You may meet patients as
a newborn at the hospital
nursery
• Your first encounter with the new parents is in the
newborn nursery or during Lamaze classes for
pregnant mothers
7. Relationship with Parents
• Most pediatricians are willing to
be interviewed by new parents to
get to know each other, obtain a
brief genetic history and medical
information and discuss other
siblings if any.
• During the first visit with new parents
the most common questions are:
o Sleeping habits and voiding/stool patterns
o Breast feeding vs. Bottle feeding
o Immunization
8. A Long-Term Relationship
• As you go on to know the parents and the siblings as
a pediatrician, you become part of the family,
providing counselling from pre-K to high school in a
number of areas:
o Substance abuse education
o Sport injury prevention
o Nutritional advice
9. Care for Adolescents
• An important part of pediatric practice requiring a thorough
knowledge of:
o Eating disorders
o Substance abuse
o Adolescent sexual orientation
o Anxiety and depression
• It is encouraged for a pediatrician to interview an adolescent in a
suitable environment one on one with parents’ permission. This
allows for confidential time to discuss topics that teenagers may
be reluctant to discuss with parents or other providers.
10. Community Contribution
As a pediatrician known in the community you may be
asked to lecture high school students on STD,
substance abuse, dangers of Tobacco and E-tobacco.
Pediatricians are at the forefront of the battle against
communicable disease and environmental hazards and
above all Child Abuse.
Pediatricians have a responsibility to make every effort
to educate parents on the necessity of vaccination and
prevention of complication vs. non-immunization

11. Pediatricians in the News Media
As you probably know, in recent years
two human health disasters were
brought to international attention by
practicing pediatricians in the New York
Times and Wall Street Journal
12. Zika Virus
The relationship between
microcephaly of the newborn
and the Zika virus in Brazil
was reported first by two
pediatricians from Recife,
Brazil: Dr. Vanessa Van Der
Linden Mota and her mother
Dr. Ana Van Der Linden.
Wall Street Journal: “The Two Brazilian Doctors Who Sounded the Alarm
on Zika and Microcephaly,” January 29, 2016
13. Lead Toxicity in Children
The high level of lead in the
drinking water supply in
Flint, Michigan was reported
by practicing pediatrician
Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha of
Michigan State University.
New York Times: “When the Water Turned Brown,” January 23, 2016
14. Rewards of a Career in Pediatrics
• If you stay long enough in practice: At times while being
interviewed by new parents you find out that you have
been pediatrician to one or both of them and that will
certainly gives your age away.
• They keep coming back: As a pediatrician it is indeed
rewarding to see that the children that you have
provided medical care for 18 years are now in college.
They often still insist on seeing you for minor illnesses.
15. Options for Pediatricians
• One of the unique aspects that the specialty of pediatrics offers
is a higher degree of flexibility than many other medical
specialties.
• Because pediatricians are needed everywhere, they have the
option to:
o Work in urban or rural settings
o Choose their practice environment and scope of practice
o Pursue different career paths, such as public health,
teaching, or research
