Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things. They can only be seen under a microscope. Animal cells contain a cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, and a nucleus. The nucleus contains the cell's DNA and controls its functions. Plant cells also have a cell wall and chloroplasts that contain chlorophyll for photosynthesis. Cells join together to form tissues and organs that make up living organisms.
