REPRODUCTION
It is one of the important life process,
which ensures the continuation of
similar kinds of individuals´
generation after generation.
There are two modes by which
animals reproduce. These are
Sexual reproduction and Asexual
reproduction
Methods of
Reproduction
Sexual and Asexual
Reproduction
Sexual Reproduction:
Requiring 2 parents (egg & sperm)
Combining different genetic material.
Some animals produce offspring when
two parents are present . It is the
process of reproduction in which the
fusion of male and female gametes
takes place
These animals are born
alive and hatched from
eggs. Like goats, dogs,
cats, frogs cows,
chickens and many other
animals.
Fertilization:
The fusion of ovum and
the sperm is called
fertilization.
a. Internal Fertilization
Fertilization that takes place inside the female
body that is in aquatic medium is called internal
Fertilization. This is observed in human beings and
other animals such as cows , dogs, horse and
cats.
Internal fertilization occurs in mammals, insects,
birds, reptiles.
Mammals (gorillas, lions, elephants, rats, zebras,
and dolphins have live births)
Insects, birds, reptiles lay eggs
2 KINDS OF FERTILIZATION
Zygote:
During fertilization, the nuclei of the
sperm and the egg are fused to
form a single nucleus. This fertilized
egg is called zygote.
Embryo:
The zygote divides repeatedly to
give rise to a ball of cells. The
cells begin to differentiate into
various tissues. This developing
structure is called an embryo
b. External Fertilization
External fertilization usually requires a medium
such as water, which the sperms can use to
swim towards the egg cell. External fertilization
usually occur in fish and amphibians.
The females lay the eggs in the water and the
male squirts the sperm in the same area.
Fertilization that takes place outside the
female body that is aquatic medium is called
external fertilization. This is observed in frogs,
fish, starfish.

fertilization. This is observed in
frogs, fish, starfish.
ASEXUAL
REPRODUCTION
Asexual Reproduction
• is the reproduction that do not
need one male and one
female to produce an
offspring.
• A single parent organism
simple makes identical copies
of itself.
Methods Of Asexual
Reproduction:
1. Binary fission
2. Budding
Binary Fission
Single-celled
organisms (Amoeba,
paramecium, euglena)
which use asexual
reproduction can do
so simply by dividing
into two equal halves.
When conditions are good, such
as plenty of water, food, right
temperatures, etc., binary fission
is a very effective way of
producing many, many offspring.
Budding- an offspring
grows out of the body of
the parent.
Hydra Budding
offspring
In hydra, new individuals
develop from buds. This method
of asexual production is called
budding.
Bud:
A lateral outgrowth from the
parent body that assumes the
shape of parent
