Android N Preview was released 2 weeks ago. It has several new cool features including Multi-window, Direct Reply and Bundled (group) Notifications, new Doze, direct boot and others. In N, Doze additionally saves battery whenever the screen turns off. If you’ve already adapted your app for Doze, e.g. by using the GCM high priority message for urgent notifications, then you’re set; if not, here’s how to get started. Also, we’re continuing to invest in Project Svelte, an effort to reduce the memory needs of Android so that it can run on a much broader range of devices, in N bymaking background work more efficient. If you use JobScheduler for background work, you’re already on the right track. If not, N is a good time to make that switch. And to help you out, we’re making JobScheduler even more capable, so now you can use JobScheduler to react to things like changes to content providers.
- Network access is suspended. The system ignores wake locks. Standard AlarmManager alarms (including setExact() and setWindow()) are deferred to the next maintenance window. If you need to set alarms that fire while in Doze, use setAndAllowWhileIdle() orsetExactAndAllowWhileIdle(). Alarms set with setAlarmClock() continue to fire normally — the system exits Doze shortly before those alarms fire. The system does not perform Wi-Fi scans. The system does not allow sync adapters to run. The system does not allow JobScheduler to run. Doze checklist If possible, use GCM fordownstream messaging. If your users must see a notification right away, make sure to use a GCM high priority message. Provide sufficient information within the initial message payload, so subsequent network access is unnecessary. Set critical alarms withsetAndAllowWhileIdle() andsetExactAndAllowWhileIdle(). Test your app in Doze.
- If you need to set alarms that fire while in Doze, use setAndAllowWhileIdle() orsetExactAndAllowWhileIdle().
- Where possible, persist the external directory access URI so you don't have to repeatedly ask the user for access. Once the user has granted access, call getContentResolver().takePersistableUriPermssion() with the directory access URI. The system will persist the URI and subsequent access requests will return RESULT_OKand not show confirmation UI to the user. If the user denies access to an external directory, do not immediately request access again.
