Goodwin's music video theory outlines 5 key features of successful music videos: 1) A strong relationship between lyrics and visuals, 2) Thought through beat, 3) Narrative and song performance, 4) Technical aspects like editing and effects, 5) Developing the star image. Visuals can illustrate, disjuncture from, or amplify the song's meaning. Technical elements like lighting create mood. The artist's involvement and unique star image engage audiences.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. The Theory
• Goodwin’s theory states that there are 5 key
features of a music video.
• 1) There is a strong relationship between the
lyrics and the visuals.
• 2) Thought through beat (seeing what the lyrics
mean in your head).
• 3) Narrative and performance of the song
• 4) Technical aspect.
• 5) Star Image (camera shots to make the artist
look like the centre of attention).
3. Relationship between the music and
Visuals
• Visuals can be used in three ways to promote a
song. Goodwin believed this was through analysis
of lyrics, e.g in many music video’s the artist often
does exactly what the lyrics in the song say.
• 1) Illustrate – The video may use certain images
and shots to show the audience the meaning of
their lyrics and the genre of their song.
• 2) Disjuncture – The meaning of the song is
completely ignored within the music video.
• 3) Amplify – When the camera shots are
manipulated and shown repeatedly to get the
image drummed into our heads.
4. Thought through beat
• 1) Analysis of the music structure in order to
understand chorus and verses.
• 2) Artist voice would be unique so audience
will be able to form identification that can be
linked to the star image or singer.
• 3) Story the artist is trying to portray through
their song and their vocals.
5. Narrative and performance of the song
• Goodwin believed that it was important for
the artist to involve themselves in the music
video by performing an acting role such as the
main character or singer. This would help to
give the audience a special connection to the
artist and keep them engaged.
6. Technical aspect
• Andrew states that the technical aspect helps
to keep and hold the music video together
through the use of mise-en-Scene, editing and
special effects.
• Lighting and colour within the video helps to
create the mood and setting, can also help to
highlight significant parts of the song and
create emphasis.
7. Star Image
• Andrew referred to star image as a visual
representation of the music video. The way
the artist looks can have a big impact on
whether the audience find the video
appealing. The star image has to be unique to
that artist in order to advertise their music
video.
