Gurukul Education
System
Islamic invasions, British period &
Independent India
Mahabharata War
After Mahabharata war, societal
structure as well as educational
infrastructure was distorted due to
lack of intellectual power caused
by large scale destruction.
Aftermath of Mahabharata War
After about 1100 years Buddhism
rose. Later Jainism, Ajivika, etc.
become very prominent. They
carried forward the Gurukul
System. But things weren’t that
great.
Islamic Invasions
Islamic invasions particularly after
11th century were very
detrimental to the gurukul
education.
British Period
Thomas Munro, W. Adams, T.B.
Macaulay, G. Leitner, G.L.
Prendergast are some of the most
prominent British names that
studied and destroyed Gurukul
System barring Leitner.
Independent India
Thinking Modernity = Westernity,
Indian leaders of independent
India didn’t act much differently
than their spiritual precursors i.e.
British.
