3. PREHISTORIC ERA
Archaeological evidence
of anatomically modern humans in
the Indian subcontinent is claimed to
be as old as 78,000–74,000 years.
The ancient history of the region
includes some of South Asia's oldest
settlements and some of its major
civilizations.
4. FIRST URBANIZATION
Inhabitants of the ancient Indus river valley, the Harappans, developed
new techniques in metallurgy and handicraft (carnal products, seal
carving), and produced copper, bronze, lead etc.
The Bronze Age in the Indian subcontinent began around 3300 BCE
with the early Indus Valley Civilization.
Linguists hypothesized that Dravidian-speaking people were spread
throughout the Indian subcontinent before a series of Indo-Aryan
migrations. In this view, the early Indus Valley civilization is often identified
as having been Dravidian.
5. VEDIC PERIOD
Many of the concepts of Indian
philosophy espoused later, like dharma,
trace their roots to Vedic antecedents.
Sanskritisation Since Vedic times "people
from many strata of society throughout the
subcontinent tended to adapt their religious
and social life to Brahminic norms", a
process sometimes called Sanskritisation.
,The core themes of the Sanskrit
epics Ramayana and Mahabharata are said
to have their ultimate origins during this
period.
6. SECOND GENERATION
The Maurya Empire (322–185 BCE) was the first empire to unify India into
one state, and was the largest on the Indian subcontinent.
At its greatest extent, the Mauryan Empire stretched to the north up to the
natural boundaries of the Himalayas and to the east into what is
now Assam. To the west, it reached beyond modern Pakistan,
The empire was established by Chandragupta Maurya assisted by
Chanakya in Magadha (in modern Bihar) when he overthrew the Nanda
Dynasty.
7. EARLY MODERN
PERIOD
In 1526, Babur, a Timurid descendant
of Timur and Genghis Khan swept across
the Khyber Pass and established the Mughal
Empire.
It was the second largest empire to have
existed in the Indian subcontinent, and
surpassed China to be become the world's
largest economic power, controlling 24.4% of
the world economy. and the world leader in
manufacturing, producing 25% of global
industrial output.
The Mughal Empire reached the zenith of its
territorial expanse during the reign
of Aurangzeb and also started its terminal
decline in his reign due to Maratha military
resurgence under Sivaji.
8. MODERN AGE
The British Raj invested heavily in infrastructure, including canals and irrigation systems in
addition to railways, telegraphy, roads and ports. However, historians have been bitterly
divided on issues of economic history, with the Nationalist school arguing that India was poorer
at the end of British rule than at the beginning and that impoverishment occurred because of
the British.
During the Second World War (1939–1945), India was controlled by the United Kingdom,
with the British holding territories in India including over five hundred autonomous Princely
States British India officially declared war on Nazi Germany in September 1939.
The British Indian territories gained independence in 1947, after being partitioned into
the Union of India and Dominion of Pakistan..
Hindus and Muslims in these provinces and spread to several other parts of India, leaving
