Ancient Egypt revolved around the Nile River, where most Egyptians worked as farmers or laborers while a small group were nobles. Society was strictly hierarchical, with the pharaoh at the top ruling as both political and religious leader, followed by nobles, priests, traders, and peasants, and slaves at the bottom. Egyptians worshipped many gods who had human traits, and common people had small home altars while only the pharaoh and priests entered temples. Some key gods included Ra, Osiris, Horus, Isis, and Anubis. Amulets were also important for protection and symbols included the uraeus, Eye of Horus, ankh, and scarab.
