The Hittites were an ancient Anatolian people who established a powerful kingdom centered in Hattusa in north-central Anatolia between 1800-1200 BC. At its height around 1400 BC, the Hittite Empire controlled large parts of Anatolia and northern Syria. After 1180 BC the empire fragmented into several independent city-states, some of which survived until the 8th century BC. The Hittites spoke an Indo-European language and developed advanced skills in metallurgy, chariot warfare, and diplomacy.
