The Design Management elective was one of the highlights of my MBA experience here at Imperial.
Good design = good business. And just like any other business discipline, good design management stems from a systematic, thoughtful and informed approach to design.
For this individual assignment, I chose Dell and I took the role of a design management consultant. I then crafted a strategic plan on how Dell could make a better and more efficient use of design and designers.
Once I identified the Design Management that Dell currently adopts, the strategic plan addressed:
i) how this company can make a (better) strategic use of design, broadly understood in terms of processes, practices, collaborations with design consulting companies etc.;
ii) how design can fit within the company’s existing business model and activities or how the business model needs to be changed accordingly;
iii) how Dell could concretely implement these changes towards a more effective use of design;
iv) how the implementation of the previous changes will help repositioning the company on the market, and what benefits are expected (e.g. in terms of profits, image, reputation, market share, etc.).
Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Imperial MBA degree and the Diploma of Imperial College London. I was awarded a Distinction for this Design Management elective.

Digital Transformation - another buzzword around the globe, is it? Well, it is a trend of course, but, all of trends has some reason behind them. So, what Digital Transformation stands for? What is transformed? How the transformation is done? Why do we need to transform something? This presentation focuses on answering these questions and understanding what stands behind the trend called Digital Transformation from user experience point of view.
Listen to how a digital agency from a sleepy provincial town developed tech that is set to put marketers in complete control of their most important digital asset, (not their NFT’s) their website!
Since the dawn of the internet Ad Agencies and Marketing teams have loved to hate website development.
Every morning agencies and marketing folk get up and don armor, select a weapon and corral an army of the bewildered to do battle. They are fighting technology fragmentation, rising infrastructure costs, ballooning overheads, and diminished creative freedoms. These daily skirmishes have forever labeled web development as a price of entry, loss leader. Blutui has set out to change this and I will explain why and how we plan to change the game for advertising agencies of all sizes.
The team at Blutui have reimagined the web development process to make multi-site, multi-brand, multi-collaborator and even multi-agency web development something marketers can fall in love with over and over again.

People get excited when shiny a new technology comes along, especially when it promises to solve major pain points. But sometimes jumping in with both feet too soon can cause unforeseen and unpleasant consequences. When organizations want to take advantage of the next big thing, it’s important to first take a hard look at what the company’s needs and resources are before making the big leap into the unknown.
Register for this episode of The Briefing Room to hear veteran Analyst William McKnight as he explains how Hadoop is transitioning from a novel concept to a key component of modern data management architectures. He’ll be briefed by Rich Reimer of Splice Machine, who will discuss how they have helped customers get started in Hadoop with an Operational Data Lake, a Hadoop-based, scale-out solution designed to replace stressed out Operational Data Stores (ODSs). He will show an Operational Data Lake becomes a great on-ramp to Big Data, ensuring that companies get immediate value from their Hadoop investment and avoid the trap of the never-ending "science" project.

So you have your localization tools and data in a private, public or hybrid Cloud. Great! But how “Cloud” are you, really? Do you have your people working at the speed of Cloud? If you don’t, does it matter if you have all the Cloud infrastructure/systems in place? And which is more important, speed of Cloud or ease of Cloud? Our panel of expert leaders has seen the full-spectrum journey to the Cloud and will share their thoughts on what it takes to really leverage this oh-so-popular model…and why.

Similar to Analyzing the Market for Drupal - Baltimore DrupalCamp 2018 (20)
There are two types of mistakes, errors of ignorance (mistakes we make because we don’t know enough), and errors of ineptitude (mistakes we make because we don’t use of what we know). No matter how much of an expert you are, a well-designed checklist can improve outcomes. A checklist is a written guide that walks you through the key steps of a complex procedure. This session builds on popular presentations I’ve given multiple times including, “10 Steps Not To Forget After Installing Drupal” and “The Ultimate Drupal Launch Checklist” to provide tools to better manage Drupal projects. Taking inspiration from Atul Gawande’s “The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right”, this session presents 4 checklists to improve results.
Designing for the web is complicated. Endless screen sizes, high user expectations, and usability challenges offer up some interesting if not impossible challenges for web designers, especially when wrestling with complex functionality delivered by Drupal. Join this detailed discussion on web design and designing Drupal 8 websites.
Where to start? So often the creative process begins with a blank page. Does the approach to design change when working with Drupal? Drupal is not a blank slate. As designers and themers, we have to consider structures inherent in all Drupal sites like regions, blocks, displays and views. We’ll look at specific structures found in every Drupal 8 site and discuss approaches to design that leverage the output that Drupal provides.
With a rich medium like Drupal to work with processes have to change. We’ll explore how the design process fits into the development process. How we can make the design process more agile and how can we incorporate design into a project. We’ll discuss the difference between theming and design and their role in building out a new Drupal 8 site.
Then we’ll talk about managing all this and how the design process fits into a large development project. What are the responsibilities of the designer? What are their deliverables? We’ll propose a standard list of design deliverables and touch upon style guides, wireframes and mood boards.
Since creativity is all about invention and inspiration we’ll explore the cutting edge of web design and how future releases of Drupal 8 might shift the way we design websites and how we interact with them.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
2. The evolution of the CMS marketplace to favor more
comprehensive and thus also more complex solutions
is favoring bigger companies with stronger
competences through number of experts in specific
fields. This can be a struggle for small vendors, as
mastering clients’ needs requires more expertise than
is available on their staff.
2017 Drupal Business Survey
3. Drupal Business Survey Results
● Total 239 responses
● 40 different countries
○ Europe 136
○ North America 92
○ South America 5
○ Africa 10
○ Asia 30
○ Oceana 11

5. Trends: Small companies getting smaller
● For companies smaller than 500 employees, the average
firm size was roughly 19 in 2001, and roughly 13 in 2011
● New businesses are starting and staying smaller
6. Trends: Big companies getting bigger
The average size of companies with between 500 and
10,000 employees increased by roughly 35%. During those
10 years to roughly 2,200 employees on average.
7. Measuring Scale
➢ Under 20 - Direct supervision
➢ 20 - 50 - Supervised supervision
➢ 50 - 100 - Disengagement and growth
➢ 100 - 500 - Divisional
➢ Over 500 - Global

● The focus of larger Drupal organizations is hosting,
marketing, and consulting
Small Agencies Abound

● How do we rally the majority of Drupal service providers?
● How does this majority thrive with Drupal 8?
Small Agencies Are Essential!
12. What is enterprise software?
● Satisfies the needs of an organization rather than
individual users
● Business-oriented tools
● Costs more
● Complexity requires specialists to implement
13. How is enterprise software purchased?
These "enterprises" use a lot of software, but most of that software doesn't get
sold to the "enterprise" itself; it gets sold to one of the employees of the
"enterprise", who has the authority to spend $400 or whatever to get the
software they personally use to do their job. That's not "enterprise" software,
because it's sold to an individual, not a so-called enterprise.
"Enterprise software" is software that has to be sold to an "enterprise", where
someone who doesn't use the software (typically a manager) must be persuaded
to use his purchasing authority to buy the software. It's different in a variety of
ways from other software, but none of these ways are strictly technical.
14. How is enterprise software sold?
● Target C-Level Decision Makers
● Engagement through sales person
● Longer sales cycles
● Pay annually rather than monthly
● Add-ons and upsells
● Focus on big deals
15. But...
With the average American adult spending more than 60
hours per week on digital devices, quality expectations for
software have risen dramatically. These new expectations
have especially had a strong influence on the progress of
software in the enterprise.

16. The Consumerization of IT
