Do we
actually
know what
we know?
Analysis: “Why you should love statistics”
Tedx Talk by Alan Smith at TEDxExeter
By Shloka
What if the world that we
live in isn’t a creation of the
Big Bang but a continuous
simulation being performed
by an AI that has an high
sentient consciousness?
We live in a highly connected
world especially with IOT
cropping in and making our
lives easier. How will the
world react if one day we
aren’t connected at all?
But before we answer such big questions,
can we say, with utmost surety, that 37% of
200 is 74? Can we answer that in 5
seconds?
What I found really thought
provoking in Alan Smith’s talk is
that how people like me, who
would classify in the top 51% of his
study, were eager to just start
guessing as soon as we were
asked to.
And we would base our estimates on
-Our heuristics
-Our experiences
-Our gut feeling
But is that enough?
What we need to realise
is that, in a country
where half of the
population isn’t capable of
performing basic
mathematical operations,
we would be better off if
we could rather try to
based our estimates on
sane analytical arguments
and not base it on biases.
The second most notable thing was
how we follow a particular pattern of
movement.
With the advent of data science and
the humungous amount of data that
is changing in real time, we have to
keep innovating and at the same
time adapting to the needs of the
consumers.
What
exactly
matters
to a
manager
in India?
1.
Know
who you
are
dealing
with.
India is an extremely
diverse country. The
knowledge base a and thus
the preferences are going
to vary evermore. A
manager in should know
how to customise his skills
according to the people
he’s dealing with. In the
same way that Alan Smith
designed his survey to suit
his clientele.
2.
Provide the
consumers
something
that they
understand
What Alan Smith did was to
customise his surveys
according to what he
thought would appeal more
to his audience. By
contracting the concerned
area to a person's personal
geographic location, he
made sure that he extracted
the right information.
3.
Build upon
it. The key
to
knowing
the future
is
accessing
the past.
With various steps that he
took to analyse the survey
and make it a better version
of itself owing to the
discrepancies in the
learning patterns of his
audience, he made sure
that he developed
something that could create
an impact.
