Sound terminology test
 On your desk you’ll find a pack of sound terms
 Sort them into piles – ones you know and ones you aren’t so
sure of
 Read the description of the term on the slide and
wave the right answer in the air.
Sound term test slide 1
 This is how the character speaks and is used by the
character to tell us where they are from. It will give
us an idea of where the TV Drama might be set or it
might point out that the character is an outsider and
speaks differently to others.
 Accent
 This refers to when the characters are talking to one
another. This is used to create realism (as we talk in
real life!) but also to help develop the plot and the
storyline for the TV Drama
 Dialogue

 This term is used when the tone of the sound doesn’t
match the image on screen.
 Asynchronous
 This is when the use of a sound (either an
instrumental sound or a sound effect) is carried over
from one shot in one location or time period to
another shot in a different location or time period.
 Sound Bridge

 These types of sound help to create realism and
make what we are watching feel real.
 Sound effects / Foley sound (I’ll let you have either)
 This term refers to the speed of the combined sound
track.
 Pace
 This sound technique is often used to signal the
arrival of a character
 Sound motif

 Identify four different sound terms and pull out the
right answers from your red terms.
 You can use your notes here to help
 Think about what meaning they communicate to
the audience about what’s happening in the sequence

Starter sentences
 ‘Sound is used to convey messages about gender in
Sherlock’
 For example, the use of an urgent-sounding musical score
during the sequence when Sherlock is looking at the A-Z
suggests that he is using his intelligence to solve the clues
 This conforms to gender stereotypes often found in the media
where men are shown as dominant and in control of knowledge
and power.

conversation between two characters?
 Shot reverse shot
 Which editing device is used to link the action of two
scenes or shots together?
 Sound bridge
 Which editing device is used to link two separate
pieces of action together – usually foreshadowing a
collision of the two

 This term refers to the technique used to condense

 This edit is used a type of cut that is used to convey
centrally important narrative information to the
audience and helps to drive the storyline
 Motivated Cut
 Provide three functions of editing:
 Helps us to piece the narrative together (understand storyline)
 Helps us to understand the characters and their relationships
 It can make us form an emotional attachment with the
programme (scare us, make us cry, make us angry)

 We are going to re-watch the second sequence
 Identify four different edits that are used and write them
down – get ready to wave your terms in the air (like you
just don’t care... sorry….)
 You can use your notes here to help
 Think about what meaning they communicate to the
audience about what’s happening in the sequence
 How do you feel when you watch the sequence?
 Are you worried for the characters?
 Do you care about the characters?
 Do you want the characters to solve the crime?
 What does this tell us about the characters and the action?

  • 3. Sound terminology test  On your desk you’ll find a pack of sound terms  Sort them into piles – ones you know and ones you aren’t so sure of  Read the description of the term on the slide and wave the right answer in the air.
  • 4. Sound term test slide 1  This is how the character speaks and is used by the character to tell us where they are from. It will give us an idea of where the TV Drama might be set or it might point out that the character is an outsider and speaks differently to others.  Accent  This refers to when the characters are talking to one another. This is used to create realism (as we talk in real life!) but also to help develop the plot and the storyline for the TV Drama  Dialogue

Sound terms test slide 2  This term is used when the tone of the sound doesn’t match the image on screen.  Asynchronous  This is when the use of a sound (either an instrumental sound or a sound effect) is carried over from one shot in one location or time period to another shot in a different location or time period.  Sound Bridge

Sound terms test slide 3  These types of sound help to create realism and make what we are watching feel real.  Sound effects / Foley sound (I’ll let you have either)  This term refers to the speed of the combined sound track.  Pace  This sound technique is often used to signal the arrival of a character  Sound motif

Analysis of Sound in Sherlock  We are going to re-watch the first sequence  Identify four different sound terms and pull out the right answers from your red terms.  You can use your notes here to help  Think about what meaning they communicate to the audience about what’s happening in the sequence  How do they make you feel?

Editing term test: slide 3  This edit is used a type of cut that is used to convey centrally important narrative information to the audience and helps to drive the storyline  Motivated Cut  Provide three functions of editing:  Helps us to piece the narrative together (understand storyline)  Helps us to understand the characters and their relationships  It can make us form an emotional attachment with the programme (scare us, make us cry, make us angry)

Analysis of Editing in Sherlock  We are going to re-watch the second sequence  Identify four different edits that are used and write them down – get ready to wave your terms in the air (like you just don’t care... sorry….)  You can use your notes here to help  Think about what meaning they communicate to the audience about what’s happening in the sequence  How do you feel when you watch the sequence?  Are you worried for the characters?  Do you care about the characters?  Do you want the characters to solve the crime?  What does this tell us about the characters and the action?
