Analysis of my music video
1. Mise-en-scene
• Urban outfit E.G. crop top and ripped jeans, swell as a classy and sophisticated
dress to appeal to more people
• Bright & bold clothing and makeup
• Bold makeup throughout to show the consistency of the image being portrayed by
the artist and also suits the dance/pop genre and the fashions within this genre.
2. • High heeled shoes were used as a prop to emphasise the partying and
youthful/energetic vibes. The dark colour of these shoes reflect and
element of mystery and danger, and also evening nightlife.
3. • Her hair is mainly down and free flowing. This is o represent her
freedom and confidence. I took inspiration from Pia Mia’s hairstyles
in many of her music videos, featuring the bandana.
• In contrast to this, I have included shots with her hair also up. This is
to show her more classy and elegant side, in contrast to her other
urban side when she lets her hair down.
4. Camera work-
• Close ups emphasise the artists power and how she
is the focus
• Begins with a pan-to reveal the artists face last this
keeps the attention of the audience as her face is
the last thing to be revealed
• Pans throughout the video-sexualisation of the
female body (linking and supporting stereotypes of
females in music videos) This will attract male
attention, as well as females because they aspire to
look like her.
5. • Long shot of artists legs as she walks
towards the camera. Her slow and
powerful walk suggests confidence and
that she’s not afraid of anything. This
gives the target audience something to
look up to
• Extreme close ups suggest that the artist
means what she is saying and says it with
power and passion, the repetition of
these shots emphasises this point. The
changing colours link them to the dance
genre.
• Focus pull at 0;53 shows the artists face
more clearly and suggests that she is
sometimes mysterious
6. • Many of the shots are still shots. This suggests
that the artist is in control of how she feels and
her actions, while still being energetic and
enjoying herself.
• The zoom in, just before 1;31 draws more
attention to the artists face, just before the shots
change colour. This draws their attention to her
and increases the impact and memorability of the
colour changes.
• I have then included a zoom out when the colour
changing is established to keep the audience
guessing on what could happen next, and
therefore grabbing their attention. This also fits
in with the fast pace of the song.
7. • There is another focus pull at 2;10 ,this is
to draw attention to the artists body and
outfit, clearly showing off the typical
outfits in a dance/pop genre. While also
fitting with the fast pace.
• I have included many mid-shots in order
keep the flow of my music video going
and break up the other edits so they
aren’t too much.
8. Editing-
• Cuts & jump cuts- keep the pace and
flow of the video going, sometimes
speeding up as the song speeds
up,but not always as I only wanted
this to happen a few times to create
variation.
• Fades- increase the professionalism of
my video and also emphasise the
artists power as there is two versions
of her on the screen at one time. I
often included fades during the slower
part of the song as the fades I chose
to use were slow.
9. • I used flashes of black screen to suggest
mystery and emphasise the night time
partying aspect of my video
• I decided to use lots of effects and
coloured filters to make my music video
really bold and stand out. This makes it
recognisable for the audience.
• Also, I feel that the different colours and
variation of high key and low key lighting
and spotlights hugely represent the dance
genre of music.
• At times, I decided to split the screen and
have multiple images of the artist on the
screen at one time. This was because I
thought it added something slightly
different to the video, in order to keep the
audience interested, while keeping with
the characteristics of the genre.
