emotions of facial expression and also expresses emotions in the actions performed in the close-up shot
Wide establishing shot in the dance studio=Establishes her location and shows she’s alone expressing insecurity
Medium-long shot of female sitting against mirror =Shows her reflection in the mirror suggesting that she’s alone and that the only
person she feels she has is herself
Medium close-up of singer crying=Connotation- an argument and insecurity/ sadness
Extreme close-up shot of male wiping female’s tears=Shows sadness in the eyes (action code- audience immediately knows she’s sad
or that he has made her upset)- also suggests the male cares- followed by the lyrics “dry my tears coz I can see just what you’ve made
me”- female realises just what he’s done to make her feel this way

Extreme-close-up shot of male texting ‘I love you baby’ to someone= Suggests he’s texting someone ‘I love you’ and audience expect it
to be sent to the girlfriend
Wide-shot of second female on the bed receiving a message= Suggests he’s texting someone ‘I love you’ and audience expect it to be
sent to the girlfriend until another female receives text- suggests male is cheating behind the female singer’s back

Video transitions- dissolve- piano scenes, some studio scenes, dance scenes and also bath scenes=Dissolve used in piano scenesopening with piano scene inspired by Alicia Keys- smooth transitions to the next scene- matches well to slow music. Dissolve
transition in dance scenes for a good flow of the dance routine. Dissolve transition in bath scenes suggests she’s been in the bath for
quite a long time feeling insecure and crying the whole
Slow motion of hands coming apart =Suggests they’re separating emotionally- she can’t connect to him anymore
shot reverse shot between female in dance studio and male cheating=shows he’s doing it behind her back and she has no idearepresents an enigma code- raises questions from audience like: will she find out that he’s cheating? will they still be together?creates a hook ending
high cutting rate when he sends text to female= goes well with the song- in sync with beat- Also represents the tension of the
situation
reverse scenes at end of video=Suggests she has been replaying all the bad moments of their relationship in her mind- cycle of
insecurity.(action code)- action code
fade to black at end of the video- singer shouting fading to black screen=The fade to black complements the fading of the song and
complements how the song gets calmer and slower at the end.

locations- Dark gloomy scenes such as, the black background dark studio, dark dance studio, gloomy bath scene- very little natural
light=complements what she is feeling- she is feeling gloomy sad insecure and alone- dark colours connotes these dark feelings
Clothing of main female singer- black dark colours- except for key scene in video-she is dressed up in party dress=goes well with
how she is feeling- no bright colours- dark colours to suggest sadness- key scene where she is dressed in party dress suggests that
this was the turning point in their relationship- key narrative moment change
clothing of the boyfriend- dark black=suggests he is the ‘villain’ ‘baddie’
clothing of mistress- leopard print, bright, colours=contrasts to the female singer- provocative leopard print- suggests her
provocative behaviour towards the male
Props- phones=for the cheating scenes
Props- Piano =complements piano playing from song- professional
Props- PlayStation controller =distraction from male away from female
Theories that appeal to conventions
used in the Music video
•

•

•

LEVI-STRAUSS= binary oppositions (narratives rely on oppositions e.g. male female, good versus bad etc.)In our music video
the female is the ‘goodie’ versus the boyfriend who cheats who is the baddie- Goodwin says that this is conventional; it
represents the conventions of real music videos that exist in the music industry today as music videos that are to do
with heartbreak today, have the singer who is normally the victim of adultery, and the male who is the cheat and the
‘baddie’
BARTHES= semiotics, codes, connotation, decoding- micro-elements of a narrative- 2 codes: action codes (easily decoding,
audience can understand straight away what is happening, no need of telling- this is represented in the music video when a
close-up of the singer’s teary face appears suggesting to the audience that she is upset and that the male is at fault for this) and
enigma codes ( these are questions posed in a narrative which makes it more mysterious;will she get back with him in the end?
Will she find out he’s cheating on her?)
POST-MODERNISM= difficult to define because it is in a time where everything goes - altering chronology or structure in
narrative (music videos mix up narratives and performance e.g. changing third and first person and there is no fixed
chronological narrative where TODOROV says that it starts with the establishing a problem then complication then
action climax and finally resolution. It reverses at the end mixin up the chronology of the music video and that there is
no fixed narrative story)- This expresses style over substance (as long as it looks good)- can express something anyway you
like (mix and match) – no fixed meanings (polysemy- range of different meanings)

layout- image kept to the left- space for lettering placed alongside the
opening of the product- idea taken from the actual singer Delilah’s
CD cover

●

Lettering- calibri/ verdana- kept simple as the song and video is also
simple- bold and big onto the page to attract audience but not too
bold to not distract from the female on the front cover- lettering is
also spaced for more of a professional look- idea taken from
Rihanna’s album ‘LOUD’

●

Front Cover

Photography-dance studio- theme of model looking away from
camera- Close-up shot- shows insecurity- different from other
existing products- usually face onto to camera- lighting is artificial not
natural and quite gloomy with not much added colour to appeal to
her gloomy sad feelings.-Links to Adele’s ‘21’ album as she has used
black and white and gloomy dark lighting to appeal to her album
theme

Colour- colour of lettering is kept in a simple black to go with the
dark feeling,, it is also a professional colour and looks good with
almost anything- the colour of clothing was kept dark to go with dark
theme
Inside of
CD
digipack

●

Photography- dance studio- Medium long/ wide shot- shows her reflection- still looking away from camera to keep with
the theme- lighting kept dark and gloomy

●

layout- picture fits so that the singer is on the left and her reflection is on the right where the CD will be placed- different to
existing CD- lyrics placed on the left side aligned straight on the left using Photoshop rulers- lyrics added as this is a
single and there’s not much else to add- Delilah’s signature placed on the far bottom right corner- identity

●

lettering- kept consistent- calibri/ verdana- signature is in italics to show it is a signature/ handwritten- subtle not bold

●

Colour- lyrics in white complements black (black and white colour scheme is simple and not too distracting)- colour of
clothing kept black- suggests sadness, hurt
●

●

Spacing of the singers name is kept
consistent- ‘insecure’ is in italics to go
with Delilah’s signature

●

CD

CD is in plain black- simple complements
the white lettering- similar to Leona
Lewis’ ‘Spirit’ CD as hers is also black
with not actual image

Insecure placed under Delilah- name of
singer is important- the differences of
fonts also go well together.
•

•

Layout-the layout of this back cover was influenced by the back of Rihanna’s
‘LOUD’ album- as well as the ‘LOUD’ album we also placed the main image
on the left whilst the lettering is placed along the right- this allowed our final
product to look more professional and conventional in terms of having some
similarities to other existing media products

•

Lettering- the lettering on this is kept consistent in-terms of having spacing inbetween the letterings which was influenced by Rihanna’s ‘LOUD’ album. The
lettering also varies in size which was also taken from the album ‘LOUD’- we
thought by having this variety of sized fonts, it enhanced the back cover and
made it look much more visibly attractive

•

Back of digipack

Photography- this shot was taken in the studio and is similar to our posterThe female is kneeled down on the floor looking away from the camera and
away from the light- this is suggesting that she can’t step in the light and is
stuck in a dark insecure relationship- again the lighting is artificial as we
wanted to control just how much light we wanted in this shot- we also made
sure that no natural light would contaminate or change the lighting of this shot
by closing the shutters (curtains) of the dance studio

Colour- the colour of the lettering is kept in a consistent white which goes with
the poster of our product- it complements the picture and does not clash with
the main image- its pure and simple which goes with our main media product.
●

●

layout- the writing is all placed on the
bottom similarly to one of Rihanna’s album
posters of her album ‘Loud’- more of a
professional layout- as it does not distract
the audience from the main image- an image of
the front cover of the CD is placed on the bottom
right -we decided to have this because we saw
that Adele’s poster of ‘21’ had it too and it looked
legit and professional- it also shows that we made
the effort in not only using the one picture but
taking many other pictures that portrayed the
same sense of insecurity (looking away from the
camera)

●

POSTER

Photography- high angle looking down at singervulnerability- looking away again- dance studioartificial light - subtle and simple- no editing

Lettering- kept consistent - sizes varied according
to what information was most important on the
poster-font colors kept white to complement
backround rather than get lost in the backgroundIt makes the writing visible and clear on the poster

  • 8. Inside of CD digipack ● Photography- dance studio- Medium long/ wide shot- shows her reflection- still looking away from camera to keep with the theme- lighting kept dark and gloomy ● layout- picture fits so that the singer is on the left and her reflection is on the right where the CD will be placed- different to existing CD- lyrics placed on the left side aligned straight on the left using Photoshop rulers- lyrics added as this is a single and there’s not much else to add- Delilah’s signature placed on the far bottom right corner- identity ● lettering- kept consistent- calibri/ verdana- signature is in italics to show it is a signature/ handwritten- subtle not bold ● Colour- lyrics in white complements black (black and white colour scheme is simple and not too distracting)- colour of clothing kept black- suggests sadness, hurt
  • 9. ● ● Spacing of the singers name is kept consistent- ‘insecure’ is in italics to go with Delilah’s signature ● CD CD is in plain black- simple complements the white lettering- similar to Leona Lewis’ ‘Spirit’ CD as hers is also black with not actual image Insecure placed under Delilah- name of singer is important- the differences of fonts also go well together.
  • 10. • • Layout-the layout of this back cover was influenced by the back of Rihanna’s ‘LOUD’ album- as well as the ‘LOUD’ album we also placed the main image on the left whilst the lettering is placed along the right- this allowed our final product to look more professional and conventional in terms of having some similarities to other existing media products • Lettering- the lettering on this is kept consistent in-terms of having spacing inbetween the letterings which was influenced by Rihanna’s ‘LOUD’ album. The lettering also varies in size which was also taken from the album ‘LOUD’- we thought by having this variety of sized fonts, it enhanced the back cover and made it look much more visibly attractive • Back of digipack Photography- this shot was taken in the studio and is similar to our posterThe female is kneeled down on the floor looking away from the camera and away from the light- this is suggesting that she can’t step in the light and is stuck in a dark insecure relationship- again the lighting is artificial as we wanted to control just how much light we wanted in this shot- we also made sure that no natural light would contaminate or change the lighting of this shot by closing the shutters (curtains) of the dance studio Colour- the colour of the lettering is kept in a consistent white which goes with the poster of our product- it complements the picture and does not clash with the main image- its pure and simple which goes with our main media product.
  • 11. ● ● layout- the writing is all placed on the bottom similarly to one of Rihanna’s album posters of her album ‘Loud’- more of a professional layout- as it does not distract the audience from the main image- an image of the front cover of the CD is placed on the bottom right -we decided to have this because we saw that Adele’s poster of ‘21’ had it too and it looked legit and professional- it also shows that we made the effort in not only using the one picture but taking many other pictures that portrayed the same sense of insecurity (looking away from the camera) ● POSTER Photography- high angle looking down at singervulnerability- looking away again- dance studioartificial light - subtle and simple- no editing Lettering- kept consistent - sizes varied according to what information was most important on the poster-font colors kept white to complement backround rather than get lost in the backgroundIt makes the writing visible and clear on the poster
