2. Genre characteristics
• The beginning shot starts with the light bulbs lighting up the room which is
typical iconography of the indie genre as well as there being a low light
• The camera shot then pans to the artist with a guitar which is another
typical iconography of the indie genre and his costume is a baggy shirt and
jeans with a hat which could be argued as giving more of a country genre
tone
• All together the mise en scene in the beginning shot then consist of indie
signs including the lighting, costume and instruments
• More characters join in all wearing the same outfit , including braces and
white shirts, to reinforce this type of genre in order for it to be shown
within the video
3. Relationship between lyrics and visuals
• The song is about a relationship and there being unrequited love
• The unrequited love is shown through the lyrics “I been trying to do it
right” and “I’ve been living a lonely life”
• There isn’t a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals because the
video shows a performance and a loose narrative of the band performing
in front of others in a rustic building whist others join in and dance
• This is not a replication of a heart break and two people not sharing the
same love
• If there was a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals then there
may have been a narrative story of the two characters but there is mainly a
performance
4. Relationship between music and visuals
• There is a strong relationship between the music and the visuals because
the song starts slow and then as the video progresses, the music get more
up beat
• This is shown through the camera shot at the start that’s showing the low
light lit up by the light bulbs and then it pans to the artist slowly walking
forward, matching the tempo of the song as well as him playing the guitar
which is played within the music
• Then when the video starts to gradually quicken, there are gradually more
people adding such as the man and then the woman joins until everyone is
in the building dancing and singing which is when the music has the
loudest dynamics with all the layered sounds as well as the fastest tempo
5. Artist involvement and increased motifs
• There is a large artist involvement in the video which then reinforces
the indie genre because of their style
• The artist has close up shots and medium shots at the beginning on
his own playing the guitar and showing the signs of the indie genre
within the mise en scene
• The band members then one by one join in until the audience start to
join as well and then the band start audience interaction with the
people to show how they are more personal and then shows their
style of music being personal
6. Notion of looking and female portrayal
• There is no notion of looking throughout the video which could be because one of the
band members is a woman and so if there was a sexualised notion of women then the
band would be contradictory
• The only women in the video is the band member who joins in the video which is a
positive representation of women because she isn’t just a character in the video to
widen the target demographic through sexualisation
• The other women in the video are the audience who are dressed similar to each other
and are just dancing and joining in instead of there being a main focus of a women so
they are just portrayed the same as all of the audience
• This is then a positive representation of women to be a part of the band or the audience
instead of just an object for the male gaze which is emphasised by her costume of a
dress which isn’t provocative and just matches the style of the video
• The women is shown throughout the video as equally as the male characters and in one
of the camera shots, she is surrounded by roses which could be romanticising her but in
an innocent way
7. Intertextual references
• There is no intertextual reference because the video has a main focus
of just enforcing the genre through the use of typical iconography and
music style
8. Performance or narrative
• The video is mainly a performance because the artist are playing on
instruments such as the guitars and singing with each other
• The band is performing to an audience like they would at a real concert or
gig conveying a true performance as everyone joins in and there is an
element of overdramatising the performance with props such as confetti
• One of the only narrative element of the video is the setting of the rustic
building however the only scenes within the building is the performance
and the settings main objective was to show the style od the music video
at the start so that the audience instantly know what style of music it will
be and then the scenes of the setting then carry on throughout the video
until the end
• Another narrative element are the dramatic scenes such as the light bulb
being smashed which could represent meaning behind the song
9. Narrative theory
Todorov
• Todorovs theory cannot be applied to the video because it is not a
narrative so it doesn’t consist of an equilibrium or disruption
Propp
• The artists could be considered as the hero because he is the first one in
the video and creates the audiences happiness and enjoyment within the
performance however he doesn’t save anyone and there isn’t a princess to
be saved so it can only be loosely applied
Strauss
• There isn’t binary opposites because the aspects of gender and age for
example are integrated and equal to each other so there isn’t any need for
comparison
