This teaser trailer establishes the crime genre through various shots that suggest gang activity, criminal behavior, and police raids. The establishing shot introduces a run-down working class town. Voiceovers from the protagonist hint at a dark tone and allude to being dragged back into criminal activity. Subsequent shots depict an attack, money exchange, intimidating gang members, and weapons, reinforcing the crime theme. The trailer builds tension through dialogue, music, and an increasing pace to leave viewers wanting more.
2. This is the first shot in the teaser trailer of Brotherhood. This is an establishing shot of a town or
a city. This suggests to the audience that the film might be set in this area, as establishing shots
are designed to show the audience where the film is going to take place. In this shot, the
city/town seems to be a very run down and a working class area. For examples you can see
council blocks in the shot. Straight away this gives the audience and impression of what the film
is going to be about and gives hits of the genre. The connotations of the shot suggest that it
may be a crime/gang film or has something to do or resolves around working class people and
their lives. The lighting in this shot is low-key which gives a dangerous feel and is something
which is continued throughout the teaser trailer
3. Shortly after the establishing shot comes a series of shots of the protagonist of the film. This is used at the
beginning of the teaser trailer to introduce the protagonist of the film so they audience can familiarise with
him. During these shots is the non diegetic sound of a voiceover in which the character speaks. In this
voiceover he says “Times change, people change, but it doesn't matter if you're sorry, no matter how much
you try to move on, he’ll try and drag you back in”. This voiceover sets the tone of the trailer and gives a
serious and sinister feel to the trailer. It also builds up a lot of tension due to the diegetic sound of sound
effects and non diegetic sound of instruments in the background. This connotations of this to the audience
is that the film will be quite comminatory.
4. In this mid shot there are two large men attacking a old lady and seem to be about to commit murder by
throwing her off the balcony. These two seem to be criminals due to the mise en scene in this particular shot.
This is because of the way they are acting and also by the clothes they are wearing, such as the all black
clothing and the use of gloves. This scene connotes what the genre of the film is about which is crime. Also, in
this shot it looks to be in a council estate which could also be a suggestion to a working class theme throughout
the teaser trailer and also in the film. The content of this shot is very effective as this is the basis of what seems
to be the essence for the entire film.
5. The fourth shot I have chosen to analyse it a mid shot of the protagonist, and many other characters at a
funeral. It seems to be at a funeral because of the mise en scene, everyone is wearing black, looks sad and you
can see flowers at the end of the shot. The effect this mise en scene has it that we can already know they are
at a funeral with only the 1 second it has in the teaser trailer. Moreover, the use of the mid shot allows us to
see everyone's facial expressions even people at the back. Also, as the man is in middle of the shot this shows
him to be the protagonist of the film. The shot in general gives the audience a hint of what might come in the
film and could be in relation to the last shot in which the lady may have died, leaving the audience thinking.
6. The 5th shot I picked is the close up of a man holding/counting money. As this shot is a close up it
connotes that money might be an influential theme or a big factor in this film. This shot also gives
more hints into the films genre. This is because as crime films usually resolve around the ambition
for money and this is what criminals strive to get. The use of the high key lighting in this film may
connote the reality of the money of the film and that illegally dealing with money is a normal
thing for them and in the movie.
7. One of the scenes in the middle of the trailer is the protagonist on the phone in which he says
to someone “You’re a dead man”. This is last the scene before the trailer speeds up and
increases the pace of editing. The effect of the switch of pace of editing (the phone call scene
then the trailer speeds up) has on the trailer is that is gives more of a effect to the rest of the
trailer where it speeds up because it gives it more of an impact due to the scene before in
which he says “You’re a dead man” which gives it the impact. The effect of the diegetic sound
of dialogue when he says “You’re a dead man” gives a frightening feel to the trailer and gives
more of a hint towards the crime genre. Also, the use of the close up allows the audience to
see his emotions and the seriousness of face.
8. This is a mid shot of armed police officers running down the stairs. The short
scene seems to be a police raiding, possibly of the criminals in this film. The
use of the mise en scene of the gun shows the extent of the seriousness in the
film this is because this is an English based film in which police do not normally
carry guns so this shows extremely intense the situation is.
9. This is a low shot of the protagonist of the film looking up at what seems to be gang members.
The low shot of the man looking up at the gang shows superiority of them and also
demonstrates to the audience that they are intimidating. This connotes that they might have a
big part in the film. Moreover, this further implements the crime genre and how there could
be gang related crime in this film. In this shot there is high key lighting which is unusual as gang
related crime usually happens at night in films or with low key lighting. This would make a
audience more interested as this is something which is different from other films.
10. In this mid shot there is the protagonist of the film in middle as well as the film title in
bold in the middle of the screen. This connotes even more that this man is the
protagonist of the film because of the way he in positioned in the shot. This also shows
us the title of the film and is one of the last shots. This will make the audience
remember the name of the movie as it is one of the last shots. The mise en scene of
weapon connotes the crime genre and also creates excitement for the audience
